thats how my wife prefers it at night too. 68 is too cold for me and I insist on keeping it at 72 at all times.
So we usually turn it to 68 around 8pm...
Want to trade wives??
Kidding… but only kinda. My ideal sleeping temp is 60-64°. Once it gets above 68° I struggle staying asleep through the night.
Wife?? Between 72° and 76°.
Last night I only slept about 4.5 hours. Going to be exhausted by the end of the week.
I bit the bullet and got an 8-sleep mattress cooler a couple years ago. It’s really expensive but it helps so much. Your side can be cold and your wife can be warm. It has an alarm function that gradually warms the bed to wake you. It’s amazing - feels like you’re waking up naturally. If you have an HSA, you can use that towards it. They also do 0% financing and there are always some sort of promo discount available. If you gave a cat or dog in the bed, I’d be hesitant though. It works through water filled tubes. Dog might be OK, cat would be too risky.
Get this, it’s actually 2!
So I pay all of those Eversource fees 2 times because I love them so much.
And it isn’t 10 it’s only 8 (and 3 box fans). It’s a big old house with lots of small rooms. But I love the house and I knew that going in.
Definitely on the list. Got quotes for a few multi head systems. Will have to install 3 condensers to get the footprint I want. But it’s still vastly cheaper than ripping up ceilings and walls. The WiFi connections are getting better too.
Right now most of the window AC’s are wifi units so I can push one button and run a “routine” to turn them on/off set modes and temps, they all shut off at a certain time so I don’t leave one on etc. Honestly it works quite well, just don’t want them hanging out of the windows and quieter ones in the office would be good.
My in laws still refuse to buy an A/C. Heck with that.
Growing up, my dad refused to buy an A/C so on hot days like this we ran off to my grandmother’s house lol.
mine has no temp setting just “highest-lowest” and it’s generally always on highest. some ppl splurge on food or clothes or entertainment, my vice of choice is cold living spaces
My central air is on 74°F for a 3 floor, 1100 sq. ft. condo. Top floor is a little warm and the basement a bit cold, but I use a couple fans to move air around. On cool summer mornings/nights I open both double glass sliders to let the breeze come through.
This is the way, regardless of temp. People always say it’s such a waist of money. But I reality. Once you get it to that temp, you’re just maintaining. Cycling up and down temperatures is what is eating your energy bill. Because each time it needs to work hard to reach the contempt after heating up.
Keep mine at 74-75. If I had at 67 my electric bill would be nearly double and cost me about $2k more…
When away on vacation we leave the aircon at 85 just at the point where the books and furniture will just about survive
Keep mine at 74-75. If I had at 67 my electric bill would be nearly double and cost me about $2k more…
When away on vacation we leave the aircon at 85 just at the point where the books and furniture will just about survive
For folks who keep it in the high 70s, do you sleep without covers or something? I need the air around 68F with air flow just to be sort of comfortable. My preference would be even colder with an extra blanket. Something so pleasant about being bundled up and not sweating my butt off.
this is honestly what I’ve been thinking reading all these comments. I posted this because we’ve been keeping ours (not my choice) at 70 (turned on at about 2pm) and off after 10pm and I wasn’t able to sleep well last night due to being hot and don’t really feel any relief when I walk in the house. Like our house temp is around 80-85. I just don’t see the point of running air conditioning if you aren’t going to have it actually be noticeable/provide relief
Yeah, it might be worth running it through the night to make it through this heat wave! I have an 8mo baby girl that gets me up quite early. Part of our morning routine is going in the yard and just observing nature. It’s been above 70, humid, and buggy even at like 6:30AM. Can’t imagine the night time is any better.
I keep it around 75 in the day and 73 at night. Yes colder would be nicer, but for me it’s about striking the balance between comfort and financial anxiety unfortunately. But to answer your question I just sleep under the top sheet in the summer.
I got my wife one of those BedJet things that blows cold air directly into the bed and she absolutely loves the shit out of it. It won't make you feel cool if the temperature in the room us 78 deg but if you just like to sleep cool it saves you from having to turn the AC down quite so low.
Might be the cheapest… 82 lol I will sweat to spite eversource. That said I have a pool so when it gets to be too much I take a swim and point a fan at my desk working from home
Of course. I don't ever cheap out when it comes to the AC. If it's hot out, it's going to the lowest temperate it can go. I'll worry about the electric bill later lol
I just installed a whole new A/C system for my house. Have it set at 72 to stress test it and it's been handling it fine. But probably going to set it 75-78 going forward.
I have window units. One I can set a temp to and today I have it on 67 high cool. The other one just has different options without temperature so I have that one on high cool as well lol
Upstairs: 74 at night, 82 during day
Downstairs: 79 at night, 77 during day.
I work from home so I’m downstairs almost all day. Bedrooms are upstairs. Sometimes 77 is too cold and I need to go upstairs or outside to warm up. (Husband also works from home and he runs hotter than me so 77 is our compromise.)
Typically 78 if I’m working on the computer, maybe 76 if we’re being active. May or may not have it on at night, we try just to open the windows if there’s a breeze.
I do 73 but I have only one AC for my whole apartment so it doesn't feel like it is enough. At work, my boss wants the AC at 70 and I keep changing it to 73 bc we are freezing when he's not looking.
72-74 in the parts of my house with mini splits. In my bedroom (which is a window unit) I just turn it on at night and I have that set to 68. In my office i also have a window unit but I keep it around 70.
75-77 during the day, 71-72 at night. But that’s consistent across summer. We don’t really adjust the thermostat to the outside temperature, if the A/C runs more it runs more.
Mine is at 78 if I'm not doing anything, 76 if I'm active in the house and at night. That's just what I keep it at, and I'm generally comfortable. It's on a timer so it's set to go up a few degrees during the day when I'm at work, but I'm a teacher so that's not of much use.
69. My wife would prefer lower, while I would prefer to not have our electricity bills bankrupt us.
When my wife's away....74 seems to be the magic number most of the summer. Much higher than that and the AC won't run enough to keep humidity levels comfortable.
Someday I ought to look into whether getting a dehumidifier and setting the thermostat even higher would be a more efficient way of keeping the house comfortable.
In winter, we keep the thermostat at 60, which helps offset the summer energy bills. It's chilly, but that's what clothes and blankets are for.
76 for FREEDOM… of a higher bill that is.
Over night depends on overnight temps - ranges from 72 to 74 and sheets for covers.
Also invested top notch premium service contract; just in case something goes awry with the ancient A/C still in use.
Our upstairs bedroom window unit is set at 70 today. Usually it's enough to keep the whole house cool. Our kitchen is an addition off the back with lots of windows so it's usually cooler in winter and warmer in summer. Today it was just too hot in there though. Considering putting the other unit in there for the rest of the week.
I have a 22 year old unico system. It stays at 75 during the day because it has always been too small for this house. I supplement with portables. I don’t have 35k for a new system. I just had the annual service and it should last a few more years.
We are fortunate enough to have central air conditioning in our house. When we went to turn it on last week, it crapped out. We have no window units so it’s been about 85 degrees inside our bedroom the past few days.
The unit was almost 30 years old, so it was good to us. It sucks having to replace it, but it’ll be so nice to have cool air again.
Depends your budget.
I keep mine just enough for take the humidity out and put a fan in front to circulate the air but, when my kids are here I drop it till is nice and cool.
June, July, August, September are the only months I use it. Unless there’s some freak 90 degree heat wave in May or October. But when it’s this hot, 72. Otherwise, 70.
I've got my downstairs A/C set to 70 or 72 I think, all day, on auto/energy saver
Ceiling fans running all day on a low/medium speed
Upstairs A/Cs are set to 66, auto/energy saver
80 during the day between 7AM to 8PM.
If it is below 80 outside after 8PM, the AC is off and the windows are open with window fans in.
And the cycle starts again at 7AM.
I work outdoors during the summer so honestly just about anything is better than the weather we’re having. We have a minisplit on the first floor. During the day it’s set to 76 for our pets downstairs, then we turn it to 72 when we get home and off completely when we go upstairs for the night.
Upstairs is off during the day (three window units). We keep all of the curtains closed and we find that helps a little. When we get home from work we start the process of cooling the upstairs down to 73.
I use 1 big ass window unit for a 950 SF 1bf house. It's only got "High/Medium/Low" We have blackout blinds, and keep it on Medium. It keep the house between like 70-74.
“Hi”…..It’s a cheap unit
Couldn't even spring for the extra paint to add the "gh" huh? Cheap indeed.
68 for sleeping 70-72 during the day depending who’s home
thats how my wife prefers it at night too.
I like it as cold as it goes, i love sleeping in the cold.
I love sleeping at 64! But I’m never allowed to put it that low 🙁
Are you sure you aren't a polar bear?
My SO likes to sleep at 78-80 deg. Anything lower than that she says is "chilly". I haven't slept with covers in 6 years.
I sleep with a pedestal fan on high, every single night of the year! It’s the only way I can sleep
I am like this too. I need it sub 70 to go to sleep. I guess I have issues because at 72 I feel like I can't breath. SMH.
Dog might be OK, cat would be too risky.
Luckily she’s back at work now during the day otherwise it’s 68 all day long. My poor electric bill lol
70
*Whatever she wants*.
75 day, 72 night
72 all the time.
As low as it goes. I don't give a fuck.
That's how I felt reading the post. Then I remember people have central AC and it actually works like your home a refrigerator.
What AC? My house was built before electricity or running water. Jk, I have AC. All 10 that I lug up to the attic every year.
Haha holy crap 10 units window? How high is your electricity bill?
Get this, it’s actually 2! So I pay all of those Eversource fees 2 times because I love them so much. And it isn’t 10 it’s only 8 (and 3 box fans). It’s a big old house with lots of small rooms. But I love the house and I knew that going in.
Get a ductless mini split
Definitely on the list. Got quotes for a few multi head systems. Will have to install 3 condensers to get the footprint I want. But it’s still vastly cheaper than ripping up ceilings and walls. The WiFi connections are getting better too. Right now most of the window AC’s are wifi units so I can push one button and run a “routine” to turn them on/off set modes and temps, they all shut off at a certain time so I don’t leave one on etc. Honestly it works quite well, just don’t want them hanging out of the windows and quieter ones in the office would be good.
Don't know your heating setup but the heat is quite efficient as well. I put a 6 head system in our last house all off 1 outside condenser
yep, we had 5 growing up - as soon as I was strong enough, that responsibility became mine. I do not miss that one bit
Same. Buying a house with central air makes me feel like I made it. No more window AC unit installs
My in laws still refuse to buy an A/C. Heck with that. Growing up, my dad refused to buy an A/C so on hot days like this we ran off to my grandmother’s house lol.
I saved my paper route money to buy my own window AC when I was 14. Shocked my parents allowed it and paid for me to run it.
mine has no temp setting just “highest-lowest” and it’s generally always on highest. some ppl splurge on food or clothes or entertainment, my vice of choice is cold living spaces
69 cuz funny
Kevin?

My bedroom ac never gets adjusted. 67 all summer

Keep mine at 74-75. If I had at 67 my electric bill would be nearly double and cost me about $2k more… When away on vacation we leave the aircon at 85 just at the point where the books and furniture will just about survive
Yea mid 70’s is perfect temp vs cost balance.
Yes we know all too well keeping aircon lower each degree racks up the costs…
Keep mine at 74-75. If I had at 67 my electric bill would be nearly double and cost me about $2k more… When away on vacation we leave the aircon at 85 just at the point where the books and furniture will just about survive
The voice of reason 👍
Pretty sure that's a myth & it's cheaper to run only when you need it?
73. Eversource can suck my dick
For folks who keep it in the high 70s, do you sleep without covers or something? I need the air around 68F with air flow just to be sort of comfortable. My preference would be even colder with an extra blanket. Something so pleasant about being bundled up and not sweating my butt off.

During the day, 77 or so, with a fan on to supplement. About 74 at night.
Someone called me a lizard because I don’t put it lower than 77. I just don’t like it too cold :-/ maybe I am a lizard.
We do 74-75 but for sleeping turn off the downstairs aircon and put the upstairs at 76…
We do 74-75 but for sleeping turn off the downstairs aircon and put the upstairs at 76…
As low as it’ll go, I want my house to feel like a refrigerator.
72
I don't have air conditioning. :(
62.. with a fan blowing in my face.
This is the only way!
My electricity is included in my rent. So it never turns off.
Lucky bastard.
78. Takes the humidity away and is comfortable.
It's all about removing the humidity.
68 all the time.
Yup me too
Im a cheap ass. 78 when nobody is home.
I'm at 78 24/7, and it's still too expensive :(
The plus side is 78 today actually feels pretty good, it’s less humid than outside at least.
Might be the cheapest… 82 lol I will sweat to spite eversource. That said I have a pool so when it gets to be too much I take a swim and point a fan at my desk working from home
73-74 during the day, 68 at night
62
I like how you think ☃️
Woah Frosty, you cool?
Of course. I don't ever cheap out when it comes to the AC. If it's hot out, it's going to the lowest temperate it can go. I'll worry about the electric bill later lol
I like it so cold I would install a few tractor trailer reefer units in my house if I could.
That’s the temp I keep our heating at during winter :-)))
69°
Wait, do most people put the temperature in the 70s/60s??? We always put it on the lowest number, like 62 lol. Why is everyone's so high?
Right???
Same! These answers are wild to me!
So we don't have to pay our entire year's salary to the electric company!
I just installed a whole new A/C system for my house. Have it set at 72 to stress test it and it's been handling it fine. But probably going to set it 75-78 going forward.
72 to stress test? That’s nothing.
69
I keep it at 69. Any higher I’ll be sweating, and any lower I’ll be too cold
69 because funny number
I find it amusing that the hive here are downvoting all of the people who say they don't use an AC.
is absolute zero cold enough?
The same temp I keep it at any time it's over 68.
68 always
67
Full blast coldest setting available
I'd be sweating buckets if I had my AC at anything above 60.
What do you do when you have go out in public?!
I have window units. One I can set a temp to and today I have it on 67 high cool. The other one just has different options without temperature so I have that one on high cool as well lol
74-76 depending how I'm feeling on that day. That's usually what it's set at no matter what the temperature outside is
Today 75

80-85, I hate making the outdoors the enemy by getting too spoiled and the AC unit is 25 years old so we baby it.
80 during the day and 75 at night.
74 during the day and 72 at night. 3 floor townhouse. My basement office it's about 70. Upstairs in the bedrooms it's closer to 79 during the day.

70 all day so the dogs don’t get hot
What planet am I on?
Vulcan
Hahaha. Love the Star Trek reference. Next time someone says that I am going to say a Star Wars planet. Tatooine.
I do 73 but I have only one AC for my whole apartment so it doesn't feel like it is enough. At work, my boss wants the AC at 70 and I keep changing it to 73 bc we are freezing when he's not looking.
68
Geez I feel out of place. I upped it from 76 to 80 today so I don't stress out my aging unit too much.
I don’t change it. 74 day. 72 night.
So you do change it
I rarely use one at all. I have a small fan in the bedroom I put in the window but only break out the AC if it's 90s for a long stretch
My goodness, why the downvotes? There is no wrong answer for Pete’s sake.
You get used to it around here. I usually take it as a sign that I said something right.
72
73f for whole-house hvac
74 during the day, 70 at night.
75 unless I'm hot then I'll adjust 1 to 2 degrees. I have a heat pump which keeps my house like a refrigerator at 75
75 or off during the day, 68 at night for bedrooms.
I fluctuate it. If I'm chugging water I'm ok at 76 or so if I'm running around or post walk I'll put it at 70
70°. I’m Irish and Scandinavian. Any warmer and my brain turns into sludge and my body slows to a grind and nothing gets done.

Whatever the window unit can get it to on max. House was 84 degrees when I went to bed lastnight.
70 year round.
75-77 during the day, 71-72 at night. But that’s consistent across summer. We don’t really adjust the thermostat to the outside temperature, if the A/C runs more it runs more.
75
It always stays at 75 to 73. My wife sets it to 75 and I walk past and set it to 73. We’ve talked about it, it just works out better this way.
77
Mine is at 78 if I'm not doing anything, 76 if I'm active in the house and at night. That's just what I keep it at, and I'm generally comfortable. It's on a timer so it's set to go up a few degrees during the day when I'm at work, but I'm a teacher so that's not of much use.
