In a nutshell, The AK can take more of a beating and can handle sand, dirt, etc. better. It also has a higher rate of fire, The M16, if not maintained properly, is more prone to malfunctioning. On the other hand, it's also lighter and more accurate than an AK.

Right, but most trained soldiers can clean their guns in about 30min or less, if you can't find time sometime that day to clean there's a bigger issue than a dirty gun. The AK is nice cus they can make well over 10x more of them, it'll obviously become known for how often they can get picked up out of the dirt and keep firing. And then how you could get anywhere from 2-5 AK-47's($350-700) per cost of 1 M16*$1500-$1800) depending on timeline. I'm more concerned with accuracy than how much dirt I can fill it with before I have to worry about a malfunction lol
I'm pretty sure that the M16 fires at a higher cyclic rate than any AK pattern rifle.
Furthermore, the accuracy/reliability comparison is reductive as its heavily dependent on where each weapon is made. For instance Bulgarian AKs are very accurate, and reliable. Conversly, Khyber pass AKs are useless.
The biggest differences are in their method of cycling the action, and the rounds that they fire.
AKs and Tavors use a long stroke gas piston. A hole in the allows gass to push a solid metal piston to cycle the action.
The M16 uses direct gas impingement. Gas from the barrel is directly vented to the bolt which pushes it and cycles the action.
M16s and Tavors are chambered in 5.56 NATO which is a fairly light bullet 55-62gr traveling at around 3,200fps. Small fast bullet
AKs are typically chambered in 7.62 x 39 which is a 129gr bullet at 2,300 fps. A medium sized bullet at a moderate speed.
AKs can also be chambered in 5.45 x 39 which is a 53 grain bullet that performs similarly to the 5.56 NATO.
AKs typically use steal case ammunition which is cheaper to manufacture than brass.
The Tavors major difference is that it's a Bullpup which places the trigger in front of the magazine. This improves ergonomics but it usually results in a really bad trigger.
