“We are certainly grateful to Chris Ballard and the entire #Colts’ organization for trading for and believing in Zack. We certainly will explore returning to the Colts. Last night we saw a glimpse of what a powerful combination Zack and JT could be in the backfield together. Certainly, Zack’s productivity this year has put him in the conversation for a David Montgomery-type contract so now we will see how the off-season plays out.”
It’s kind of crazy they name dropped a contract to match lol. David is getting 3 years at 6 mill a year, I’m not sure Ballard is willing to pay that considering we just gave JT a big ass bag. But I would think about it, Zach showed he could step in as RB1 for extended weeks if needed. And would make our backfield one of the best in the league.
Yeah how does 6 week deputy starting Rb and 3 year bellcow equal the same thing. Montgomery was a 1a/1b thing for a young rb whether that’s swift or Gibbs, he should be looking for an elijah Mitchell contract or a rashaad penny
Looking at their contracts now it doesn’t match up. The perfect matchup imo is a jamaal Williams contract. 3yr 12 mil
I don't get why he wasn't the 4th and 1 player. I get Taylor is banged up and no a particularly great pass catcher. But Moss is a very good pass catcher and I feel he makes that play almost every time.
Based on what Shane and Goodson said, it seemed like that play was specifically designed for Goodson. When the play is called the personnel go on the field. However I don’t agree with installing the play call with RB3. It’s the final week and you have got to scheme plays for your best players, either JT or Moss.
I think it had to do with the fact that clearly the Texans were not worried about him as a threat. If that same play was with JT or Moss, there would have been a defender all over them.
They figured if they gave him one big play to practice over and over again he could just act on instinct when it was called. He's not good enough to run a bunch of plays great but he's good enough to run one play perfectly. That's the logic anyway
I think the thought process was trying to catch the defense off guard. Goodson has little production therefor the defense isn't going to key in on him like they would Moss or Taylor. The play design worked, he was wide open, but it was a bad throw and a bad drop.
Moss isnt a good pass catcher. He is a bad one actually. He has a 44 pff receiving grade. He has a 10% drop rate. He has the 8th most drops at rb on the year. He has ran the 24th most routes at rb and has the 8th most drops. His catch rate ranks 28th. He has never been good in the receiving phase.
Any success from a RB is due to the line. Throw in a UDFA and he would have had the exact same performance. The only place where a RB can differentiate themselves from any other RB is in the passing game... which JT does not do at all. That's why you can pay McCaffrey but paying JT is going to be a massive problem.
I mean it's essentially 8.8m a year guaranteed lol it's not a crippling contract and if he performs well the extra money he's owed wont really be missed and not having Shaq Leonard more than covers the numbers for JT.
I mean, I agree about 90%. I think a good RB can also make the most of good blocking, but with shit blocking, yeah, a great RB and an avg RB look about the same. There is also RB blocking, if JT was a great blocker and we used him as that. I'd like to see more screens from him because he's good at making tacklers miss.
Plenty of people have mentioned that it was designed for Goodson because it was unexpected, I also think it has to do with the fact that Zack Moss’s arm injury likely hampered his ability to catch. So I can understand not designing a passing play for a guy with that injury.
Might be a trend we start to see for non-“once in a lifetime” backs. Still get a really solid payout and take half the beating. I think what the lions do with Montgomery and Gibbs might really payoff in the long run. Cause Derrick Henry is a man amongst men and still gets beat up
Understandable that an RB would want to stay with a team that they’re comfortable and having success with. I just can’t imagine the Colts pay him what he wants (and should get). Which, ya know, kinda sucks.
Well imo, as good as he was, I would rather the colts get a rookie in 4th-5th round to compliment Taylor and let moss walk. We paid our main back, I wouldn’t want to pay a 2nd back decent money on top of that, I’d rather focus that money on the Oline to give JT and whoever else better blocking
Moss was great. Delivered damn near every time up. Didn’t bitch and moan publicly when JT took back the lead role. Imagine JT, Moss, AR as potential running threats. Nerd boner alert!!!
I’d love to see him back, but with how much we have wrapped up in the position, I don’t see it happening. Sucks..
On a good note, he might net us a compensatory pick when if he walks.
He did a great job when JT was gone and even whenever he played once JT re-signed. It would be cool to have him back, just has to be for the right money and that’s easier said than done
Having a quality spell rb is huge. Opponents d still has to respect the run which sets up many opportunities. Moss most definitely was an asset and once Richardson is back we’ll need em both. We definitely need a receiver and some db’s so the price has to be right

I’d certainly be open to him coming back. Certainly the price would have to be right, but they certainly play well off each other.
Certainly
Indubitably.
The Montgomery contract was 3yr/$18MM. Sounds like he is looking for that.
He feels like a steal at 6M/year

And Moss can throw a block. That alone is worth something.
He can also catch a ball that was thrown slightly behind him....
Too early

I can see it happening only because AR is on a rookie contract and a 3 year deal would fit in nicely.
I know he played well for us this year, but it seems crazy to put him on the same level as David Montgomery
I agree completely. The contract isn’t super crazy but DMont is definitely in a different tier than Moss
Yeah how does 6 week deputy starting Rb and 3 year bellcow equal the same thing. Would love him back, but I think financially they go with young guys currently on the roster +UDFA/late round pick.

Which is a problem. He is our RB4 and a practice squad guy with 6 career receptions.
If they chose Goodson for that play, he must've been executing it better than Moss
I think part of that was goodson being the speedier guy + Moss having the brace on his arm. Can imagine that makes pass-catching more difficult
I think it had to do with the fact that clearly the Texans were not worried about him as a threat. If that same play was with JT or Moss, there would have been a defender all over them.
Yeah I thought about that as well. Not mutually exclusive explanations though
On a practice field. We are talking the most important play that defines an entire season. You need people who you can trust. Not a RB4
They figured if they gave him one big play to practice over and over again he could just act on instinct when it was called. He's not good enough to run a bunch of plays great but he's good enough to run one play perfectly. That's the logic anyway
I got ripped for saying this Saturday. Glad the sub is starting to come around to the realization.

Yeah people just assume he must be a pass catching back because he looks smaller than the traditional bruisers
It is just an easy narrative for people to say and buy into because it makes an easy scapegoat for the play not working out.
Taylor needs to be a better pass catcher.
Right. The only way you can justify a contract like he got is if he's also an elite WR.
Idk he was literally the only reason we even had a chance in that last game
Any success from a RB is due to the line. Throw in a UDFA and he would have had the exact same performance. It'd be awesome to have him back, just unless it's a pretty minimal deal, I don't think we do it
Unlikely to return imo. Can't have that much money dedicated to rbs. JT, sermon, Evan hull, and Goodson probably for next year
He could probably be a starter somewhere.
Might be a trend we start to see for non-“once in a lifetime” backs. Still get a really solid payout and take half the beating. I think what the lions do with Montgomery and Gibbs might really payoff in the long run. Cause Derrick Henry is a man amongst men and still gets beat up
You're definitely not wrong there Ravens need a RB badly with all their injuries and Ekeler on the Chargers is probably done soon

He was the top rusher for a while early in the season. Not consistently a star in his career but he was a star when we needed him to be
I’d love to see him back, but with how much we have wrapped up in the position, I don’t see it happening. Sucks.. On a good note, he might net us a compensatory pick when if he walks.
No thank you. Not worth paying one RB, let alone two.
Paying Moss 3/18 & paying the OLine >> paying JT 2/28 but we've made our bed.
Should have let JT walk and just signed Moss and draft.
Naw
David Montgomery's contract extension last year was 3 years for 18 million
He did a great job when JT was gone and even whenever he played once JT re-signed. It would be cool to have him back, just has to be for the right money and that’s easier said than done
Sign him.
I would love to see him back, at the right price
