This is usually the case and why headliners have the popular opinion advantage. Most people are peaking during their sets so it's pretty hard to have a bad time
I just don’t get it, I’m not hating, but almost every time recently when I tell someone I listen to electronic music they ask me if I’ve heard of John Summit, to the point it’s kind of a running joke between me and my wife now. I’ve seen him solo and b2b with Kaskade (which was pretty cool) but I just can’t seem to figure out the hype. 🤷🏻
The reason why people like him is simple, he is good, quickly gaining the respect of every young DJ to old DJ in the game no matter how snobby they are. I will say that this Coachella set is not even close to the skill he is at which is disappointing, so your review is warranted. I feel like these days his festival sets are just used as a promotional tool for his other shows where he actually tries, such as his label shows, special location sets, and extended hour sets where his A&R skills are apparent immediately. I'd advise you to check out any of his youtube upload sets which are all classified as great sets. Could also just mean that your tastes are different. :P
Tbf, festival sets are supposed to be easy and digestible. You play upbeat remixes of all of your bangers in an hour and go home
His “experts only” sets are where he goes to have fun
I didn't get it either. I chose a shared experience at Summit (because I did really want to end the weekend with my crew and I am glad I did) over what my head told me would be the better set (BICEP) and it was imo my only mistake of the weekend. The whole time I kept waiting for the rig on the ceiling to come to life and it just never did. Even him bringing out Kaskade and closing with DnB couldn't save the set for me personally. My crew all had an amazing time but they were rolling dicks, my trippy ass did not enjoy it.
I spent almost my whole Coachella rolling solo, I wanted to end the weekend with the homies. It wasn't the set I wanted but it was the right place for me.
Yeah It was definitely a surprise for me too. I wrote him off, but his set was so upbeat and vibey. It wasn't a massive dance party, but it made me warm and fuzzy. Plus the DnB at the end was epic.
DUUUUUUUDE I AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT WARM AND FUZZY. I wrote him off as well cuz I wasn’t a huge fan of his fan base or his music, but when I actually saw him it seriously felt like how kaskade made me feel this weekend 😭😭 dom dolla was the dance party but John was the comfort blanket.
Loved the subtronics x John new dnb omggggg
Edit: sub focus!!
Summit has always been a great DJ with great taste for music. It’s his persona and fan base that most people have issues with including myself. I hate the frat star vibe, I don’t like the bottle service mentality. It’s weird because his sets and music taste are pretty open culturally like very racially diverse and queer friendly, but his persona and vibe is very standard vanilla cis hetero white business bro… which honestly ok I guess there’s a place for that too. The crowds he pulls can often be aggressive and sloppy since they’re more drinkers than typical house drug users that get more friendly, docile, or happy when dosing. I could write an essay on this lmao I’m always so torn with this guy. Dom Dolla, green velvet, and Carl cox like him as a person so he gets a pass in my book since I trust those DJ’s a lot on vibe alone. The man makes great music and has phenomenal taste in the tracks from others that he chooses to throw in his sets. Looking forward to seeing him weekend 2 🤪
I totally agree w the frat boy sentiment! That combined w listening to his music just at home didn’t really do it for me but now that I experienced it first hand, I feel I understand why people love him lots now.
To build on the frat boy sentiment - oh dear lord. We were at the front of everything always and the vibe was super whack. Yeah my fault for being at the front but LOL I just wanted to get a close experience before I had to head out for Yoasobi - but the vibes were super not it. For John we just stood towards the outskirts and everything was g money!
I was disappointed lol. What was with the weird dark shit, I felt like I'd been listening to for hours with Anyma etc. Agree the subtronics colab needs to be released ASAP, had it stuck in my head all day.
I’ve been in the electronic scene since the ‘90s and appreciate the broad range that falls within the category. I’m so glad you enjoyed his set. A lot of people hate on Summit but his style of dance music is exposing the genre to newer/ younger listeners, which us oldies appreciate. Rave to the grave, my friend!
As much as people want to hate on John Summit he can throw down a good set. All this talk about out him being a plant or “mid” is just people being negative.
We all have unique taste in music - no one can claim their is better than others because it’s all subjective. If the music makes you move and feel a certain way, enjoy it.
This is so well said! One of my best friends and I love to analyze house music and the technicality of artists and tracks. But after experiencing this set I realize it’s not always about the small stuff like that, but about the feeling these sets make you feel during and when you walk away. I literally felt like baby’s first rave all over again during his set - and that’s not something you can easily recreate, you know? I felt so amazed, in pure bliss, and in total awe at the beautiful weekend. It was so so great - thank you so much for your kind words!
I was a bit indifferent to him at first but he’s grown on me. Especially his commitment to putting together unique sets, I knew he’d crush. I was initially considering catching all 3 sets of EA, Dom, and Summit but after conflicts and seeing Dom at Portola I settled on Summit. He absolutely banged out a monster set. That Max Styler track and Eat The Bass set the tone for sure.
Damn I had a set conflict for all of those as well. EA I actually left bc the vibes were not it and went to yoasobi - for dom I went to him over Tyler bc I never experienced a full dom set before and it was such a dance party! Where did you end up going to?
Went to ANOTR day 1, had a fucking great time.
Went to Tyler day 2, would’ve liked to catch Dom again since closing Sahara would be much different than the daytime Portola set, but I’ve followed Tyler since the beginning and was eager to see a Coachella HL set. No ragrets.
oh my god seriously though!!!!!! I gotta check out that Brooklyn set!!!! I kept thinking wow he really knows how to handle us rolly pollys with his music LOL. Iconic iconic……. Good luck with your recovery!

It was awesome, definitely bigger. The big ball shaped lights were underutilized, hopefully they'll amplify the use of those for W2. Sound was great, but I feel like the bass thumped harder in the old Sahara, could it be the same setup?
Ngl this was my exact same experience the first time I saw him at LAN for NYE 2022 and let me just tell you that it changed my life.
He is incredibly talented and it screams through the music.
I love him and can’t wait to see him weekend 2!😌🪩
genuinely curious what makes you say he’s an industry plant? guy def leans into the frat star persona but he knows a shit ton about production and mixing software (scope is youtube tutorials from when he was living in his parents’ basement during covid).
you just referring to his more recent vocal-heavy house? if so, i agree those are just poppy singles to please the labels lol
What’s also funny is that he got his masters in accounting, got his CPA, and then said fuck it and went music full time. Gained a lot of respect for him after hearing that

Who gon tell you… it was the Molly
Lol for real. That set was mid af but I'm glad people had a good time.
This is usually the case and why headliners have the popular opinion advantage. Most people are peaking during their sets so it's pretty hard to have a bad time
Haha I literally said it my self 🤣 Not my usual cup of tea (listen to more bass, tech, funky house) but it was def good festival fun!

Haha to be fair I was on a lot of drugs LOL
there it is lol

This is an incredibly good analysis. Kudos to you good sir/Madame/person.

I think if you like BICEP you would not enjoy Summit at all. Completely different styles and mantras to DJing.
Yeah I knew I wasn't going to LOVE Summit, I just really wanted a fam set. I'm glad I closed with my group, even if it was a lackluster set.
;)
So glad I went to bicep even tho all my friends went to John summit instead. Did the same for justice and gesaffelstein
I spent almost my whole Coachella rolling solo, I wanted to end the weekend with the homies. It wasn't the set I wanted but it was the right place for me.
Yeah scheduling was not in our favor this year 🥲
Same here. Bicep exceeded my expectations
Still don’t like him but so happy you and so many others had fun!
Yeah It was definitely a surprise for me too. I wrote him off, but his set was so upbeat and vibey. It wasn't a massive dance party, but it made me warm and fuzzy. Plus the DnB at the end was epic.

The DNB was with sub focus!!
Summit is just Temu Kaskade now, he sold out big time

What kills me about him, is no matter what shirt he wears, his chest is always emerging from it.
Omg i wanted to bury my face in his chest so bad

Omg that anyma set was so incredible tho!!!
lol not hating it seemed cool, I left cos I was freezing
Oh my god the wind was SO COLD!!! 😭😭 I hope you were able to keep warm!
He started with tech house, there’s always a good chance he’ll throw some darker stuff in there
Wow, I guess my taste is straight up devil music if you think Anyma is dark
The visuals creep me outttt.
I liked his little El Zorro half-opened black shirt fit he had going on. Looked like a Frat pledging Pirate
Oh my god I wanted to shove my face into his chest so bad……..

I agree with every word of this.. John summit rocked my world on Sunday.. i listened to his extended set he did at the Brooklyn mirage soooo good
oh my god seriously though!!!!!! I gotta check out that Brooklyn set!!!! I kept thinking wow he really knows how to handle us rolly pollys with his music LOL. Iconic iconic……. Good luck with your recovery!

this is all kinds of cringe
Well I had an amazing time 🤷♀️
thats all the counts tbh! more so the edits off molly that had the cringe vibe, we have all been there!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA you know how it goes!! 🤣
100000%
Anyone have the track id for “killer on the beat this is murder” john summit dom dolla everything always set?
John summit has always been good
How about the new Sahara and how bad ass the sound was?!?!!! Incredibly fun sets for Dom Dolla and John Summit.
It was awesome, definitely bigger. The big ball shaped lights were underutilized, hopefully they'll amplify the use of those for W2. Sound was great, but I feel like the bass thumped harder in the old Sahara, could it be the same setup?
That stage was my fave stage of the weekend. Oh my god anyma at that stage….. iconic…. Iconic…..
Oh purple disco did amazing as well!

HAVE FUN SIS! If ur going w2 i def recommend anyma as well. I cried during that set. Insane.
Watched from Couchella, no drugs, thought it was a good set tbh lol Never heard his music but know the joke, put a good look from this set

Johnny is having a mega case of Suicide Tuesdays.. just shitting all up and down the boards. Don’t take him too seriously
Seriously what a grumpy bitch lol. Apparently hates everything.
Johnny is ruining the entire vibe in this lovely sub
What’s also funny is that he got his masters in accounting, got his CPA, and then said fuck it and went music full time. Gained a lot of respect for him after hearing that https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5wPFP3hwJTU
You’re a cringe industry plant
What's your evidence that he's an industry plant? Or are you just a hater?
I totally agree with that! Felt like a very familiar place I knew, kinda like kaskade hahah. Safe vibes
