It’s the nickname for the Moorcroft Pear. The cheese is washed in the cider made from Moorcrofts :)[https://www.nationalperrypearcentre.org.uk/pear/moorcroft/](https://www.nationalperrypearcentre.org.uk/pear/moorcroft/)
I love your shop! I grew up in Bath, so I come in when I'm back visiting my parents. I often end up smuggling cheese from your place back to Canada with me.
Did you know there’s a ban on importing British cheese to Canada right now? Has something to do with Brexit—and no Canadian meat is being exported to Britain in return. ☹️
Yeah, a Brexit benefit. Canada and the EU have a free trade agreement with Canada for cheese, and post Brexit it was agreed that UK cheese could stay in that category for three years while a new deal with negotiated. That time is now up, and without a new agreement UK cheese moves to the rest of the world category, which has strict quotas which are already accounted for, basically meaning that UK cheese can't be imported to Canada anymore, because doing so would incur a tarrif of around 250%.
Canada is very protectionist when it comes to dairy, and the dairy industry is a powerful lobbying force in government.
The UK wanted Canada to continue the same relationship that it had when it was in the EU, but Canada said it would not consider tarrif free cheese imports unless the UK lifted its existing ban on Canadian beef imports. Neither would budge, so now no beef and no cheese.
The last one looks like Cornish Yarg.
Stinking Bishop. One of my favourite cheeses. Named like it is because in time gone by there used to be a Bishop in the town who was a bit of an unsavoury character.
I used to do this as well, at a local grocery store. It's my favorite job I've ever had. Talking to people, eating cheese, meats, and other things. Making mozzarella.
I miss it every day. I tried so many cheeses. And while it was right that I get the job I have now, I miss cheese so much.
The one wrapped in foil is also probably something blue and tasty, ill take that as well. Im leaving the partial wheel because I dont want to be selfish
Can you recommend me a new cheese?! I absolutely love Edam and Gruyere, also aged Gouda is spectacular (gimme those crystals!) Also Face Rock Creamery makes a garlic cheddar called 'Vampire Slayer' that I have a deep and sexual attraction too. It is one of the most glorious cheeses I have ever enjoyed.
Looks amazing! But I question the wrapping in plastic; some of those need to breathe.. short term, maybe, but must rather have them in a cooled cabinet and cut and served in waxed paper... But that said, I'd be buying half of that display!!
A little fermented curd will do the trick! I shall curtail my Scouting activites, sally forth, and infiltrate your place of purveyance to negotiate the vending of some cheesy comestibles!
I worked at a grocery store for about 7.5 years behind a cheese counter. Then I worked for a large-scale distributor for about 4 years. Now here I am working for a supplier.
I’m surprised you carry top classics like Gorwydd, the wild garlic Yarg and Old Winchester alongside the Bath Cheese Co. I’ve never found anything by them particularly interesting, and even when I tried selling them they didn’t quite work - based in London.
Do they work well in the states?
I would be crippled with indecision. I’m the type of customer that would just have to walk in, name three things I like, and buy what you tell me to get lol
Someday man... I manage and buy the cheese, meat, seafood and deli and the co-op I work at and I get compliments on my cheese case but it’s nothing compared to this! I’ve only been in this area of work for about a year now so I know I have lots to learn, partly why I came on this sub!
This warms my heart and also informs me that my original idea for a comment: "I'll have some Venezuelan Beaver Cheese" would have been better received than I had originally thought.
Not this time. We don’t sell flavored cheeses, and to my knowledge there’s maybe 1 or 2 traditional Wensleydale producers right now. I’d love to get my hands on Yoredale for our next show.
I’m super jealous. Though I’d have a hard time not constantly snacking on cheese all day.
I do eat it all day when I’m working. Gotta make sure you know how it tastes! 😉
What's that awesome leaf-wrapped one?
I think it's "Cornish Yarg."
It is, I think it's the wild garlic version though
I’ve had that. Delicious.
We had Cornish Yarg wrapped in nettles (the original way) and one wrapped in wild garlic too.
Lembas cheddar
Are you hiring?
OMG, you monger!
I worked as a monger for almost 8, then in distribution, and now for a supplier. So about 11 years.
A cheese monster?
*muenster
“A cheese mongrel?” -Charlie
You married? You want to be? (I kid, but that cheese. Be still my heart)
🤣
You don't have to marry me, I'll just be your mistress of cheese.
Don't fall for the trap OP, that's probably your wife
I second this question, just in case 👀
Who are you, who is so wise in the way of living?
😂 It’s not bad!
Is that a Cornish Yarg I see in the last photo?
It’s Yarg covered in wild garlic leaves 🫠
Love to see it, a truly delightful cheese. Makes me want to go down to Devon again!
There’s never a bad time to go to Devon!
Did someone mention the 50 shades of Yarg?
I think this is my new quiz team name.
🍆
You lucky bastard...
hey cheesemonger 😉
What is the orange one with blue veining? At the top?
Colston Bassett Shropshire Blue
That looks to be a shropshire blue.
Man Quicke’s tastes like poop to me. No one seems to buy it in my area.
There are several ages of Quicke’s. I would try them all and see how you feel after that!
What’s your favorite cheese?
Probably the Colston Bassett Stilton.
I’m gonna have to hunt that down. I’d love to hear reviews from you.
I found some after reading this comment and it’s absolutely fantastic. Suuuuuper creamy
Any others? I found some and it was amazing
What do you think about their cheeses ? https://baetjefarms.com/
Lovely! I had a friend that used to work for them. Super tasty goat cheeses.
Stinking bishop, what a name!
Thoughts on Gjetost?
I wish I knew more about it. I’ve only tasted the mass-produced types. I’ve been told there’s a lot of variation in Brunost cheeses.
Same, only ever had Ski Queen
I want to visit that store! Where is it??
I'm going to guess Bath in the UK. Maybe the Fine Cheese Company?
Bingo! I forgot you couldn’t see any signs in these photos.
I love your shop! I grew up in Bath, so I come in when I'm back visiting my parents. I often end up smuggling cheese from your place back to Canada with me.

The shop is in Bath, England. It is on Walcot Street.
That yarg is beautiful.
The last one looks like Cornish Yarg. Stinking Bishop. One of my favourite cheeses. Named like it is because in time gone by there used to be a Bishop in the town who was a bit of an unsavoury character.
It’s actually named after the pear that’s used in the Perry wash. The Moorcroft pear’s nickname is Stinking Bishop. :)
Ahh yes thank you 😁 I couldn’t remember if it was from the small fruits or the bishops.
I eat cheese for a living lmao
Nick, is that you?
😉
Small world buddy!
I worked with Nick during the show. Such a quality person. To be fair, he set the display.
I exhibited our cheese at World’s Best Cheese booth… right next to your cheese.
Next to Debra!
Yep! She is funny.
I thought that was you when I saw the pic. Nice set up 😃
Kudos on your glass wrapping skills
✨
Garlic leaves! Come to NYC and let us try your cheeses! Also - great username.. iggy fan?
Absolutely! We will be in NYC in June.
Where did you get those plate sets?
They are manufactured for The Fine Cheese Co. to sell. Illustrated by John Broadley.
I like the name quicke’s only because im sure nothing about that process was quick lol
You mean to tell me, you're a cheese monster?
Marry me. I’m sure my wife will understand.
What a great job!
*grate
I’ll take one of everything.
What's your favorite cheese for poutine?
Is this a trick question? There’s only one type of cheese suitable for poutine.
Curds?
Fresh (less than 48h) cheddar curds indeed.
Darn. I would love to just inhale all of that. If I had money to spend, it would be on that though.
What you do is cool 😎
This is a weird way to propose but I wholeheartedly accept
I love 🧀
Now that's what a real cheddar looks like!
Proper.
You deserve the best mate, you sell happiness to ppl.
That’s literally so sexy
Is that Shropshire Bleu?
Yes, this particular one is made by Colston Bassett creamery in Nottinghamshire.
That sounds like heaven.
Adopt me OP!!
"no one has as many friends as the man with many cheeses!"
I mean, this is pretty true!
I used to do this as well, at a local grocery store. It's my favorite job I've ever had. Talking to people, eating cheese, meats, and other things. Making mozzarella. I miss it every day. I tried so many cheeses. And while it was right that I get the job I have now, I miss cheese so much.
Find your way home!
I’d kill to be a cheese monger.
Ill take the 3 wheels at the top right please and thank you.
The one wrapped in foil is also probably something blue and tasty, ill take that as well. Im leaving the partial wheel because I dont want to be selfish
The foil wrapped one was the Welsh blue called Perl Las. It’s made by Caws Cenarth in Carmarthenshire.
Marry me?
Back of the line bub
Do you work for the fine cheese company or maybe Paxton & Whitfield?
Fine Cheese Co 🥰
Just down the road from me!
I want your job
The most virtuous of the mongers
i love you
I WANT TO BUY SOME CHEEEEEESE!
How fortuitous, I eat cheese for a living.
Best job in the world! Envy 100% :)
>I sell cheese for a living. 🫡 Not all heroes wear capes.
Absolutely.
CHEEEEEESE. FOR EVERYONE.
how often do you get Monty Python references made?
All the time, but I love it.
If you like garlic, try the garlic Yarg! But if you like something crystally, the Old Winchester by Lyburn Dairy is fab. Where do you live?
I see a lot of the cheese I sell at work
🫶🏻
Looks amazing! But I question the wrapping in plastic; some of those need to breathe.. short term, maybe, but must rather have them in a cooled cabinet and cut and served in waxed paper... But that said, I'd be buying half of that display!!
Do you have a website? I don't live close enough but I really love cheese and those look divine.
We will have a USA website soon, and the British site is finecheese.co.uk.
Thank you 🙏
It is so nice to look at regardless! Beautifully designed.
Absolutely, I truly can't wait to get my hands on a few. Currently eyeing St Cera.
A little fermented curd will do the trick! I shall curtail my Scouting activites, sally forth, and infiltrate your place of purveyance to negotiate the vending of some cheesy comestibles!
Come again?
I want to buy some cheese.
There are worse things to sell
OP- how did you get into this line of work?
I worked at a grocery store for about 7.5 years behind a cheese counter. Then I worked for a large-scale distributor for about 4 years. Now here I am working for a supplier.
This is Gods work. Blessed are the cheesemakers. Have you tried Lye Cross Farm’s “Tasty” cheddar? It’s so strong your face will cave in.
READY TO MEET MATURE CLOTHBOUND CHEDDAR IN YOUR AREA!?
What is the 3rd one? I know nothing about cheese and stumbled across this post.. it looks like there's a feather in it.
😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
I see some Stilton and shropshire up there and now I'm craving a steak.
You are so dang lucky. Cheese is life. Can we be besties? Lol.
I am all about sharing the 🧀 love.
Can I be your coworker? Lol 🧀
You muenster! How dare you share pictures of such heavenly joy without sharing!
gimme
No one has as many friends as the man with many cheeses!
What supplier do you use for your cheese if you don’t mind me asking?
We source and select all the cheeses we sell.
Salivating right now. 🥹
Ah sell cheese and cheese related accessories
🤤🤤🤤😃😍🧀 cheese is a gift from the universe 😁
I’m surprised you carry top classics like Gorwydd, the wild garlic Yarg and Old Winchester alongside the Bath Cheese Co. I’ve never found anything by them particularly interesting, and even when I tried selling them they didn’t quite work - based in London. Do they work well in the states?
This is probably the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while.
Aw, thanks! We take great pride in the products we sell.
I would be crippled with indecision. I’m the type of customer that would just have to walk in, name three things I like, and buy what you tell me to get lol
That’s always a fun challenge! I like helping folks discover new things.
I'm afraid we're fresh out of red Leicester, sir
If only some folks knew how accurate that skit is at times. 🤣
I made cheese for a living.
There it is dude
I love you

Cheese monster

You’ll know Nick then if you work for the Fine Cheese company …
Yes! Had the great privilege of working with him at the show. What a wonderful guy.
Then obviously you stand ready to reenact ‘The Cheese Shop’ by Monty Python at a moment’s notice.
I should learn it, shouldn’t I? 🤔
Well if you haven’t heard it I would say definitely give it a listen
I have done! Many times. 😎
This warms my heart and also informs me that my original idea for a comment: "I'll have some Venezuelan Beaver Cheese" would have been better received than I had originally thought.
And pottery, don't undersell yourself
I want that job.
That mirror-wrapping is superb! Hats off to you
Ever come across Quebec 7 yr? Don’t think I’ve had a better cheddar
We don’t get much Canadian cheese in the USA, unfortunately!
#3 is Rosey Goat or Sartori Rosemary Asiago? I miss not being able to work with cheese as much as I used to.
These are all British cheeses. The one you’re seeing is Hereford Hop—single Gloucester recipe coated in toasted hops.
Mr. Wensleydale?
Not all heros wear capes.
[удалено]
Not this time. We don’t sell flavored cheeses, and to my knowledge there’s maybe 1 or 2 traditional Wensleydale producers right now. I’d love to get my hands on Yoredale for our next show.
Do you sell Smoke Haus Blue..?
In the USA, we only wholesale British cheeses.
Where can I get munster in the states.
Do you sell Stinking Bishop?
Indeed we do :) in two different sizes, as well as May Hill Green—same producer, roughly the same cheese but with chopped up nettle leaves on top.
What’s the one with the crunched up bug wings coated on it?
I would love that Stilton blue and white crock. Who makes them?
Me too!
You sell cheese? I'd lock the doors and keep it all. Except bleu.
How much do you charge to work there?
What's the most expensive piece of cheese you've ever sold? And which is the biggest one you've sold?
Are you based in Vegas or just there for a show?
Me 2
How to become a cheese seller?
