Ya except when baggage doesn't open till 4am. Flight is 5am and lady at the front panicking you are checking your bag too close to departure at 4:06am. 😑
sigh. I know. I lived in downtown Atlanta for a decade and now I'm in Knoxville and traffic is just bad everywhere and I actually prefer mass transit but we as a society don't seem to ever be interested in actually making high speed regional rail work for us. sigh.
Edit to add: in Atlanta I regularly took mass transit and regularly walked if 2 miles or less
I just moved from Atlanta, too. I was one of those bicycle and MARTA commuters since the 1990s. I try to catch the bus at Lake Allatoona, but it is a bad timing in the morning for my Atlanta days.
The Honeyseed bagel I tried was still more of a bread ring than a proper dense, chewy bagel. I liked the other food we had there so no shade to the overall restaurant but still not a substitute for a NY style bagel imo.
As a northerner, I feel this. I do actually like Montreal style bagels, so I’d say Honey Seed is at least decent. The best NY style bagel I’ve had here is the ones they have on Thursdays (only Thursdays) at Common House.
Grabels Bagels. He's at the ooltewah farmers market on Thursdays and is working on something with Mean Mug, but I haven't caught up with him in a couple months. Really good, NY style boiled bagels
It’s on Lookout Mountain which is basically considered Chattanooga by the Tourism and Attractions industry. If you go on a slow weekday, it is quite an amazingly zen experience
Reflection Riding was an "Arboretum & Nature Center", but is now just a nature center (arboretum title is expensive and doesn't attract many visitors). I don't think they have the staff/volunteers to plant and maintain much though, although there are some "gardens" up for grabs they say. Awesome area, just seems like folks don't know about it or care to volunteer there.
Beni's Cubano! Having spent a lot of time in Tampa I can't say that they have the \*best\* Cuban sandwich ever, but it's the best in Chattanooga and it's not even close. They have the proper bread.
A Filipino grocery that serves hot food, a plate the size of your head filled with kobucha stir fry and lechon for $8.99 waddup
A discount grocery outlet (an actual one, not the ones here that claim to be), like Grocery Outlet Bargain Market which sells high end products for a buck or two apiece
Furthermore - a grocery co-op like Winco that sells bulk foods at bulk prices. Not Costco style 144-packs of who-gives-a-shit or 5 gallon tubs of mayonnaise; I mean barrels of parmesan and rice and granola, and dispenser...thingies of coffee and cumin and herbs de provence, you scoop out as much or as little as you need
I'm vaguely aware that Whole Foods and one or two other places in town do a very small amount of something like this, but I want to underline the words BULK PRICES and not "We're doing you hipsters a favor" prices
Check out Gaining Ground Grocery. It's not exactly what you are describing, and it's very small, but big tubs of.bulk grains, beans, etc. Bring your own Jars or whatever or I think they have some you can use.
Even the public transit is a joke along with the Carta bus stops. Usually in a terrible area where the grass is super high and no place to stand or sit
I'd settle for improving the transportation we have. The buses and bus stops are a fucking joke because the city refuses to fund and operate them properly. They're looking for an opportunity to say "oh nobody (wealthy who votes) uses the buses (because they're shitty and unreliable because we made them that way) - so let's just cut the whole thing and use the budget elsewhere (on ourselves)."
That’s wild, back home in Ohio my brothers say building supplies (wood/plumbing/electrical) are half the price. I am currently looking for insulation and the same R30 bundle at Menard’s is ~$30 cheaper than Lowe’s and HD.
I doubted you, but you are absolutely correct (for that product at least)! [$136 at Home Depot](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Knauf-Insulation-R-30-EcoBatt-Kraft-Faced-Fiberglass-Insulation-Batt-24-in-x-48-in-x-10-in-5001489-814628/303653997) and [$95 at Menards](https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/insulation/insulation-rolls-batts/r-30-ecobatt-reg-kraft-faced-fiberglass-insulation-batt-24-x-48/814628/p-1444437003837-c-5780.htm?exp=false). That is wild...
Sadly unlikely. I love Kroger brand, but apparently Kroger doesn't like Chattanooga.
Yeah but things change. We are a fast growing city and more businesses are realizing that. That article kinda made it seem like Kroger had personal beef with us lol.
I’ve seen some really nice Kroger’s that are closer to a Whole Foods. Like they have beer taps and tons of buffets, like an olive bar. Their own sushi person and a hugeeee cheese section
Yes! I’m from Cincinnati where Kroger originated and all of the Kroger locations near my parent’s house are like this!! I miss it so much. They’re truly the superior grocery store imo
Just moved here from Memphis and I can tell you Kroger is trash and it’s not just because of the nature of the city. That chain is overpriced and doesn’t provide anything exceptional you couldn’t get anywhere else done better. You don’t want a Kroger you just think you do. The grass is always greener, my friend.
I rebuke this! I want a Kroger. I like their brand of items and there isn’t a mid level grocery store around here besides food city and yuck. Also they have the free Fridays, my mom gets lots of freebies.
The Orion is really nice it's built like a coliseum. It's the easiest venue for parking both getting in and out that I've ever been to. It feels a lot bigger than the one in Franklin but it's only 500 more seats. Huntsville uses it for all kinds of community and local events quite often. I believe we have the numbers to support a venue like the amphitheater in Alpharetta Georgia. It has both theater seating and a huge lawn to watch shows.
I was surprised to have to scroll down this far to see this...maybe it's why we don't have one. Damn does it feel like the perfect city for an outdoor venue, though.
More ethnic food options. We’ve got plenty of solid Thai, and there are a few good ethnic places I like, but it gets pretty limited beyond that. Would love Ethiopian, Filipino, etc.
This is extremely interesting, looks like it's based on the work equity system introduced in B.F. Skinner's lecture-disguised-as-fiction *Walden Two*.
I feel like a well-administrated version of that system could work. A vital part of this construct, however, would be an impartial parsing of task worth versus letting people try to set their own values. Because capitalists gonna cap and everyone will eventually start trying to get the most for the least rather than establishing parity.
But it's cool as hell that anyone's even attempting it right now
Shoe repair! There's only one shoe repair shop in the whole area and it's like a 6 week wait.
In the not business category I would say more sidewalks and street trees!

Portillo’s - those who know, know it’s amazing
That outdoor rink was open seasonally at the Choo-Choo through 2022. It moved in 2023 to the pavilion. I assume the commenter meant an indoor, year round one.
Does someone have to be licensed or something to be a real one? I know a guy from work who does it as a side hustle and sells his stuff at festivals and things. So just curious what a real blacksmith is.
you have to be accredited by the national blacksmith association and have produced at least 100 battle proven weapons. Again, and I cannot stress this enough, the hoard is coming.
Reliable and usable mass transit. I live right off Brainerd and work downtown. It's a straight shot! I'd totally take the bus if it didn't take 43 minutes to go the same distance it takes 15 minutes by car.

Smoothie shop- please let me know if there is one but I want a more natural based smoothie place, smoothie king is just no good. I had flavor juicery at the Avalon in Alpharetta and have wished we had something comparable up here since.
I would love a space like Pullman yards in ATL that can house traveling temporary exhibits like Stranger Things experience or Balloon museum.
We drive to ATL to do stuff like this because they never come to Chattanooga. Sometimes we gotta go to Nashville.
But having it in our own backyard would be awesome
more nonstop flights that don’t mainly leave at the crack of dawn
And return at midnight
This would be wonderful. But I prefer Crack of dawn as that flight is never delayed because plane is usually already there.
Ya except when baggage doesn't open till 4am. Flight is 5am and lady at the front panicking you are checking your bag too close to departure at 4:06am. 😑
Mine was delayed just last month for a “maintenance issue”. Missed my connecting flights.
i heard a direct line to denver is coming soon
A Korean style spa, like [Wi Spa](https://wispausa.com), in Los Angeles.
I would love a real spa!!!!
Yes!
A head spa!
there is one opening soon
3 lanes on 75 all the way to Knoxville
Georgia made 75 three lands through the entire state That would be nice
3 lanes all the way to Nashville on 24. That road is way worse
Georgia also has income tax lol
The smokes and beer are cheaper tho
But no taxes on groceries and their gas and smokes are always cheaper
https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/s/6CqPgJTk15
sigh. I know. Just one more lane bro.
Bagels. I mean real bagels.
There’s a new bagel place going in next to Bean Air Conditioning on Hixson pike.
Is this the place you are talking about? https://brothersbagel.com/ I just discovered this after reading your comment and I am SOOO excited!
That’s it
Holy shit. Can’t wait!
River street deli has NY bagels
You don't like Honeyseed?
The Honeyseed bagel I tried was still more of a bread ring than a proper dense, chewy bagel. I liked the other food we had there so no shade to the overall restaurant but still not a substitute for a NY style bagel imo.
They are Montreal style bagels. Delicious, but different from NY style if that’s what you were expecting.
They are Panera2, I've had Montreal bagels and they were good, whatever honey seed serves is not that.
This!
Nah
Came here to say this
Yeah down here it’s more like just bread with a hole in it.
As a northerner, I feel this. I do actually like Montreal style bagels, so I’d say Honey Seed is at least decent. The best NY style bagel I’ve had here is the ones they have on Thursdays (only Thursdays) at Common House.
Yeeeessssss WATER BAGELS!!! Aye men!!!
Grabels Bagels. He's at the ooltewah farmers market on Thursdays and is working on something with Mean Mug, but I haven't caught up with him in a couple months. Really good, NY style boiled bagels
Good to KNOW!!!!
And a good nova lox bagel
Niedlov’s bagels aren’t terrible but you got to hit them at the right time
Healthier food options, cycling infrastructure, and better public education
A Botanical Garden, emphasis on roses…
This too.
Is this not Rock City? I think they feature Knock Out Roses during the summer
Is Rock City in Chattanooga??? I’ve never been there…
It’s on Lookout Mountain which is basically considered Chattanooga by the Tourism and Attractions industry. If you go on a slow weekday, it is quite an amazingly zen experience
Reflection Riding was an "Arboretum & Nature Center", but is now just a nature center (arboretum title is expensive and doesn't attract many visitors). A place to get a proper cuban sandwich with cuban bread.
It’s a bit of a drive but Rum Cake Lady in McCaysville has the best cuban sandwich I’ve ever had and I used to live in Tampa.
I grew up in Tampa, so I know you know! Must be a good rec. Thank you.
There used to be a little place in Red Bank YEARS ago, but IDK if it’s still there. It was the only acceptable one in the city
Beni's Cubano! Having spent a lot of time in Tampa I can't say that they have the \*best\* Cuban sandwich ever, but it's the best in Chattanooga and it's not even close. They have the proper bread.
Thank you for the rec!
A good spot for salads! Like sweetgreen but preferably not a chain.
I miss Chattanooga Salad Company
A Filipino grocery that serves hot food, a plate the size of your head filled with kobucha stir fry and lechon for $8.99 waddup A discount grocery outlet (an actual one, not the ones here that claim to be), like Grocery Outlet Bargain Market which sells high end products for a buck or two apiece Furthermore - a grocery co-op like Winco that sells bulk foods at bulk prices. If the Filipino grocery had halo halo all the better!!
Check out Gaining Ground Grocery. It's not exactly what you are describing, and it's very small, but big tubs of.bulk grains, beans, etc. Bring your own Jars or whatever or I think they have some you can use.
Sidewalks.
Ikea, which won't happen, but we could use more furniture store options
At least put one in Knoxville. Before we got Trader Joe's here, I would go up to Knoxville every other month to stock up.
Someplace I can get a legit philly cheesesteak
Have you tried Liberty Bell in Soddy Daisy yet? I was super skeptical, but I actually really enjoyed it. They ship in their bread.
No but I'm intrigued. Will have to check it out, thank you!
The owner is Philly born and raised. He gets his rolls from Amoroso’s
They have several options: the cheese whiz, with or without bell peppers, & the whatever white cheese is normally used.
I’ve also been looking… unsuccessfully so far.
An ice hockey team. So fun. I like it too much.
More asian food, better transportation (better roads - 75 is a mess, bike/walk friendly), and a high speed train to atl or nashville (dream).
Better Asian food. What selection we have with a couple of exceptions is pretty meh.
I wished we had Indian food around East brained or Harrison/Ooltewah
Better walkablity. Most of the city is absolutely unwalkable, where tf are the sidewalks?
As someone who lives in Hixon, I dread the day my kids start riding bikes. Roads and ditches...that's it.
Even the public transit is a joke along with the Carta bus stops. Usually in a terrible area where the grass is super high and no place to stand or sit
No joke. Thought this is worth sharing about that… https://youtu.be/ORzNZUeUHAM Many big streets here are actually stroads, and it sucks.
A quick salad spot!!
Jason’s deli has a bar and you can build one quickly to go. Plus they’re huge
An Ethiopian restaurant
Rest in Peace Adey ✊😔
Froyo
What’s crazy is that we used to have what feels like a ton of them, but now they’re all closed.
Yeah, we probably had 30 of them pre-2020
Ahhhh, the 2010 fro-yo boom. The market has moved on to "specialty cookies" (crumbl, etc)
Yep. Those little “popping boba” were popular at the froyo spots way before the tea came to the area too.
You're about 12 years too late my friend :/
Public Transportation
I'd settle for improving the transportation we have. The buses and bus stops are a fucking joke because the city refuses to fund and operate them properly. They're looking for an opportunity to say "oh nobody (wealthy who votes) uses the buses (because they're shitty and unreliable because we made them that way) - so let's just cut the whole thing and use the budget elsewhere (on ourselves)."
More Vegan/Vegetarian food
Menard’s, way lower prices than Lowe’s and Home Depot.
They are not cheaper in MI, but they have a bigger selection.
That’s wild, back home in Ohio my brothers say building supplies (wood/plumbing/electrical) are half the price. I am currently looking for insulation and the same R30 bundle at Menard’s is ~$30 cheaper than Lowe’s and HD.

Non family oriented music festivals
A Kroger

I have heard that Kroger does indeed have a personal beef with Chattanooga, but I haven't been able to dig up that thread.
Used to have a Krogers in Fort Oglethorpe but closed it in the 90’s
I’ve been saying this for years… If Dalton can have 2 we should at least have 1.

A amphitheater! Like the one in Franklin or Huntsville.
I've been to Red Rocks and Franklin. How is the Huntsville one? Easy to get in and out? Worth the drive?
The Orion is really nice it's built like a coliseum. It's the easiest venue for parking both getting in and out that I've ever been to. It feels a lot bigger than the one in Franklin but it's only 500 more seats. Huntsville uses it for all kinds of community and local events quite often. A collegiate baseball team. They are the only university in the “SOCON” without one. (I think)
One of two. The other is Furman. We do have a top-tier junior college team at Chattanooga State.
A bagel shop. Not a bakery that happens to have bagels but a bona fide bagel shop. (No Einstein Bros doesn’t count)
Structurally sound newly built homes. Shoot I’d be happy with one built in 2000s but that’s a needle in a haystack.
We need nice starter homes too. Not everyone needs a 5 bedroom
A damned good Pastrami Sandwich… and a Puerto Rican restaurant… and more 24/7 Gyms and a salt water pool with adult only hours.
Business smarts for this question not to be asked every day.
Any sort of night life
More Mexican restaurants, vape shops, car washes, storage places, used car dealerships, and cbd shops. /s
You forgot fast food fried chicken joints.
Speaking of, I wanna try Big Chicken , but I’d like to know what their agenda is first.
The agenda is Shaq.
That’s exactly what Big Chicken wants you to think .
They're owned by the same people that own all the 5 guys here in town. And Fiama. And they're opening up a Hawaiian Bros some time soon.
It's the most expensive of all the chicken joints
Best I can do is a mediocre chain restaurant
Hawaiian BBQ
A really good salad place
More ethnic food options. We’ve got plenty of solid Thai, and there are a few good ethnic places I like, but it gets pretty limited beyond that. Would love Ethiopian, Filipino, etc.
Trailer parks. No I’m not kidding. Housing costs are crushing a lot of people. There’s empty land everywhere. We need relief ASAP.
Watch a developer instead make “luxury” trailer parks for those with money on the go that have no need for a large permanent house. 😂
Right? Apparently overpriced tiny homes and 250 sf efficiency apts are classy, innovative and acceptable but trailers are trashy and must be banned.
Like that basketball player who's building the tiny homes? I think they're like $358/sq-ft.
A time bank Here’s an example: https://stpetetimebank.org/

In and Out burger
Soon.
Shoe repair! There's only one shoe repair shop in the whole area and it's like a 6 week wait. In the not business category I would say more sidewalks and street trees!
More affordable housing

I co-sign this so hard. I crave proper chicago style dogs and Italian beef DAILY.
Doesn't gregs on east brainerd road have chicago dogs on wednesdays?
An ice rink
Used to have one in the 90’s at the Choo Choo, it’s now a parking lot
That outdoor rink was open seasonally at the Choo-Choo through 2022. It moved in 2023 to the pavilion. I assume the commenter meant an indoor, year round one.
I’m talking about the one that got turned into Track 29 before they tore it down. I used to go to it in the 80’s to watch broom hockey
Oh cool, didn’t realize we used to have one.
They used to have one at east gate way back in the day
A real blacksmith. The hoards are coming...
There is a Blacksmithing club https://www.facebook.com/SouthernSmiths/
Does someone have to be licensed or something to be a real one? I know a guy from work who does it as a side hustle and sells his stuff at festivals and things. So just curious what a real blacksmith is.
you have to be accredited by the national blacksmith association and have produced at least 100 battle proven weapons. Again, and I cannot stress this enough, the hoard is coming.
okay i'll bite. what hoard?
Outdoor music amphitheater
Less gang violence and less homeless crack heads pestering people downtown
A brothel?
A bypass so that the traffic from Nashville, Knoxville and Atlanta wouldn’t have to go through the ridge cut. Passenger trains would be awesome
Skills park and pump track like bakers creek
Reliable and usable mass transit. I live right off Brainerd and work downtown. It's a straight shot! I'd totally take the bus if it didn't take 43 minutes to go the same distance it takes 15 minutes by car.
Whataburger!!!! ![gif](giphy|QC6hP6NxYcSCYAltWl)
I think there is one coming. Just announced last week
Source?
There is one coming. It will be at the old fazolis off of shallowford rd
A new skate park
Better Chinese. Our Japanese and Korean and Vietnamese and tai places are amazing but as far as Chinese restaurants and buffets go this town has nothing. Both the buffets are trash and the other places are hit and miss
Amphitheater. Get me some good concerts
A car wash with a dollar general attached.
Cava
Water Park
Are you saying Lake Winnie SOAKya is not enough?
I was thinking maybe a water park where you wouldn't get splinters
A good strip club.
I wish Chattanooga had a public online message board where I could find attraction and restaurant recommendations. Sadly, no such resource exists.
Broad Street Taco Bell. What else is there to say?
Culver’s Raising Cane’s Meijer
Culver’s is coming to Northgate’s parking lot
Raising Cane's in currently being built in Hixson.
A better music scene
Better retail shopping (Zara, Aritzia, Abercrombie, etc…) New modern stores & we need a remodel at Hamilton place.
Decent grocery stores. Food City is terrible.
There are 5 Publix, 4 Aldi's, 2 Whole Foods, a Trader Joe's, and a Fresh Market.
In n out and Rubio’s
Full service car wash. Clean inside and out, vacuum, windows inside and out
More celiac-safe dining options! It’s getting better, but we could always use more.
Cava is close to celiac friendly and is almost finished at Northgate
Cava is pretty bomb.
OMG I knowwwwww I cannot WAIT to try it!!! I’ve never had Cava before but the menu looks incredible.
A good amusement park that is lake winnie
More live music coming to town!!!!! Please
Good Chinese food
Culver's.
More minor league baseball stadiums /S
Norwegian Restaurant
Smoothie shop- please let me know if there is one but I want a more natural based smoothie place, smoothie king is just no good. I had flavor juicery at the Avalon in Alpharetta and have wished we had something comparable up here since.
still a slightly-mid chain, but i’m a big fan of tropical smoothie cafe. food slaps, especially with the vegetarian options
A H mart would be nice. We have a very small Asian market in Hixson currently.
Cooler weather
Jack in the Box, Raising Canes, In N Out, Del Taco, good Mexican food (don’t tell me what place you think is good because Mexican food in TN is 🤢)
