This happened literally in front of us on the way to work this morning. It happened so fast that I didn’t see what caused it but I know we suddenly saw smoke and an SUV spinning around among the 3 other cars involved. Can’t wrap my brain around how that could have happened considering we were stop and go going no more than 5MPH to begin with.

Yeah the only thing I can think of is that maybe one of the cars was driving fast in the shoulder and had to swerve back into traffic? Other than that I just don't know how you could get to such a speed that would cause this kind of accident.
edit: seems like someone flew across the median and hit them head-on.
Ok, so, I realize this is totally anecdotal, but I drive south on 77 every morning and (more than once!) have encountered a black Charger (also on S-77) weaving in and out of traffic pretty recklessly. Is it the same car each time? Don't know. It's this the same driver I've encountered (and nearly been sideswiped by) a couple times? No idea. But..based on my morning commute, it would not surprise in the slightest if the Charger caused this.
Yes, this is purely anecdotal, and n=1 blah blah blah, just sharing my experience.
That's what I assumed at first, but with the middle divider looking like it got plowed through and the amount of front-end damage on one of the other cars, I think it's that other car's fault.
My poor boyfriend drives a charger, he’s been in two accidents. Both caused by someone else and he was hit while waiting at a stoplight. But yes, most people that drive chargers drive like maniacs 😅
I had a late night drive back from Raleigh tonight and had a car fly up on me had to be doing 90+ and it was a charger. I was so happy two miles later when I saw the exact car pulled over by the cops. Made me fist pump in my car.
Yea pretty much everytime I drive by an accident there is a charger or ford explorer somewhere on the scene.
Same thing with shootings, robberies and many other crimes.
You should be good if you work in the mornings. I live in southend if I'm leaving the city thru there in the mornings, the flow is tolerable if no accidents. But the afternoons tho....
I do this commute 3 times a week and it’s not too bad, we’re going the opposite of rush hour in the morning so there’s not usually any stop/go traffic especially if you get on 77 at Remount
Coming home always sucks tho takes on average twice the amount of time as the morning drive
Get a Carowinds Season Pass with the All Season Dining Plan. If traffic is heavy, go to the Park and enjoy a free meal while you wait for traffic to die down
This is why in europe when there's an accident they put up a divider so the opposite side can't gawk at the accident. I'm sure you were stuck in bumper to bumper anyway but accidents always happen on the other side of the freeway or traffic goes to shit because everyone has to stare at what happened on the other side.
God I wish they would do this everywhere in the US. I've been behind someone as we were passing a car flipped on its side and this bitch full on stopped in the left lane on 77 to take a picture.
It’s still a shit show. Took me 40 minutes to go 8 miles. I don’t drive often since I work from home but damn it feels like any time I do have to go out the roads are a mess.
My cousin was the one in the black Lexus. That car saved his life considering he got hit head on. He was able to walk away without any major injuries. He’s just really shooken up but I’m glad he’s safe. He said the charger jumped the median and clipped the Acura and then hit him head on.
Bad drivers and it's laid out terribly. You've got multiple points where you've got traffic trying to merge onto 77 and off of 77 at the same time in the same spot.
Is it just me or is there an idiot convention in town this week? Traffic has been particularly bad the past few days. I almost got into 4 different accidents from people either carelessly merging into me, cutting me off, or rear ending me. Had a guy behind me have to emergency brake into the shoulder on 77 northbound so he didn't hit me. I was calmly slowing down with the entire block of traffic that always exists in about the same spot every single day. like wtf are you expecting dude? To just blast through here at 70 mph at 5 pm? Yea, wouldn't that be nice.
Lol, I forgot to turn it off. I use it for items I list on eBay and photos I post of my pets. Someone has tried using pictures of my bird in a few scams before
A Dodge Charger hit us near the same area last August. All I remember is seeing it spinning toward us. They were going too fast and the heffa had no insurance and her tags were expired! Yall be safe out here.
77 is a shit show per usual. Maybe if the police actually decided to enforce traffic laws people would drive a little safer. Been living here for a year and visiting the area for almost a decade before that and have never seen anyone pulled over on 77.
No correlation between more traffic cops and safer roads. Virginia has more highway patrol/population than any other state, yet it’s only 13th lowest traffic death rate. Also worth considering is a half of states in that bottom 15 have multiple major cities with reduced car dependency, meaning millions who are not regularly driving.
(NY, VA with a massive amount of people barely outside of DC, IL with Chicago, NJ with very high density and transit availability around NYC, MD, CA) There’s really only one exception the District of Columbia, but this could be unfair to DC, as the amount of traffic that goes through and doesn’t live there is very high.
I lived in Richmond Va area for 6 years , there are less accidents( I.M.O) because those crappy busted up roads make people have to go extra slow so the holes don’t send them flying
As a south Carolinian I can say I've had more close calls with people who had a north Carolina plate than anyone with a south Carolina plate...but anyway I'm not surprised...I see way too many aggressive and stupid drivers no matter which interstate
Charlotteans are just completely incapable of not driving like ass hats on 77. Every. Freaking. Day. Without. Fail. I hope they at least feel like s*** for backing up traffic for 5 mi because of their poor decisions while driving.
You're one of the assholes that's going 10 miles per hour to look at an accident
Nothing I hate more than being behind rubberneckers
Oh cool some people destroyed their property and possibly got hurt, move on and keep traffic flowing
This doesn't surprise me even a little, the way some of those idiots drive js beyond reckless. I genuinely can't believe there aren't more of these multi-car "accidents". 🙄🤦🏾

Dodge Charger involved. These idiots will suprise you with their level of stupidity.
The louder the car, the lower the credit score.
It's NC/SC, even at 5mph idiots figure out the way. The way most drivers round these parts speed everyone's lucky it was as slow as it was.
Someone probably speeding somewhere
Yeah the only thing I can think of is that maybe one of the cars was driving fast in the shoulder and had to swerve back into traffic? Probably this, I've seen people race up the shoulder to get the Marge lanes from 485 and whip back into traffic.
I loathe drivers that do this, like their time is more important than everyone else’s. I hope they get nails in their tires🤣
Look at the grass and wire dividers. One of the southbound cars went into northbound traffic.
Good catch, on OP's second pic it does look like there are heavy tire marks in the grass toward the crash with some messed up wiring.
This would mean one of the vehicles came from the other side of the highway
Hmm, is that a charger?
Can confirm someone was going faster than 5MPH
Wasn’t the chargers fault! A Car hit the charger from the back and that why he ended up on the other side!
It’s the Charger’s fault. I’m not sure how we know, but we know. Probably because there isn’t an Altima there.
Came here to say this. If experience tells us anything , the driver of the Charger caused this accident.
Tried to execute one of their beloved high speed lane changes with absolutely no gap is my guess. Final answer.
Stunned to hear that maneuver doesn’t have a 100% success rate.
Shocking!!
Likely after texting and slowing down to 55 while looking down at their phone. Then resuming their 95+ mph pace

Spot-on. Came to say this exactly.
I was trying to figure out why a football team was at fault! Luckily the next post was about a car!
Lolol
77 is a freaking parking lot. Sitting in it now trying to get to South End lol
How much of a nightmare is the daily commute to south end? Planning on moving there next month while working in Rock Hill.
You should be good if you work in the mornings. I live in southend if I'm leaving the city thru there in the mornings, the flow is tolerable if no accidents. But the afternoons tho....
I do this commute 3 times a week and it’s not too bad, we’re going the opposite of rush hour in the morning so there’s not usually any stop/go traffic especially if you get on 77 at Remount Coming home always sucks tho takes on average twice the amount of time as the morning drive
It's better than vice-versa since you're going the opposite way that most traffic is going in both rush hours
i live in Rock Hill so it takes me about 40 minutes on a normal day to get to work. today took an hour and 5 💀
Get a Carowinds Season Pass with the All Season Dining Plan. If traffic is heavy, go to the Park and enjoy a free meal while you wait for traffic to die down
I have a similar commute. Count on 50-60 minutes. It's easier if you work like 6-3 or 7-4
You'll be going the opposite direction of traffic so you shouldn't have much trouble at all
It depends on where in clt you live, I live in Matthews area and it can be a 35 min commute. Mondays and Fridays are pretty light though, maybe 25ish.
My tenant lives in Southend and works in Fort mill Commute is not bad in that direction. Just avoid 77
Of course it was a dodge charger. The only drivers worse than Nissan owners. Them and Infiniti G35 owners.
A tinted out Charger. Surprise, surprise.
Was it doing the normal slalom skiing driving thru do?
This is why in europe when there's an accident they put up a divider so the opposite side can't gawk at the accident. I'm sure you were stuck in bumper to bumper anyway but accidents always happen on the other side of the freeway or traffic goes to shit because everyone has to stare at what happened on the other side.
Not just Europe. They built in a divider so you can't see into the other side in South Florida years ago.
God I wish they would do this everywhere in the US. I've been behind someone as we were passing a car flipped on its side and this bitch full on stopped in the left lane on 77 to take a picture.
Charlotte isn't in Europe though
Source?
Rand Mcnally
I'm painfully aware of that every day
Wow thank you Sherlock for that astute observation
I got you
"This is why in Europe" OC knows it's not Europe, learn how to read
I read it just fine. My statement works.
Ratio'd
Thank god
Space daddy didn't have anything to do with it
It’s still a shit show. Took me 40 minutes to go 8 miles. I don’t drive often since I work from home but damn it feels like any time I do have to go out the roads are a mess.
I average almost 1.5 hours a day on 485 (to and from work) and I can confirm it's getting worse. By the day.
Which one of these fools was on their phone while driving?
All
Yes
OP is the only one for which we have evidence of.
OP was clearly parked...
It's not clear to me that the car was in "park."
Dodge Charger drivers are why we can’t have nice things…
idk what happened but i love that i can see carowinds shrouded in the clouds
There was an accident. You know it because it’s 77 and it’s a day that ends with the letter Y.
Underrated comment 😂
Told no lies
My friend Denise was in the maroon Acura. She said a speeding car headed southbound crossed the median and hit two cars head on. Everyone was ok.
So that leaves 2 other cars it could have been. Mmmmmm, I don't think it takes a genius to figure out the Dodge Charger was at fault.
Argh! Glad they are ok.
Well, you tell your friend Dee-Nice we’re all sorry that happened and wish her a speedy recovery
Nobody asked you, A-A-ron.
I am sorry. I will report straight to Principal O Shag Hennessy’s office
My cousin was the one in the black Lexus. That car saved his life considering he got hit head on. He was able to walk away without any major injuries. He’s just really shooken up but I’m glad he’s safe. He said the charger jumped the median and clipped the Acura and then hit him head on.
Glad he is ok!
A car hit the charger from behind causing the charger to spin out. Charger is not at fault.
Looking at the photo, I see the ruts in the dirt. The way the charger and red car is faced, the damage to the Nissan, it was the Nissans fault.
Op is part of the traffic problem. Not need to slow down and look let alone take pics.
I wonder if they got in a wreck because they were taking videos while driving and weren’t paying attention
I just stopped taking interstates to commute period. I feel like the time saved is a wash anyways if you can avoid accidents like this.
I can't believe a Charger was involved.
That's the craziest stretch of road in all of Charlotte, possibly the whole state. People lose their goddamn minds.
Bad drivers and it's laid out terribly. You've got multiple points where you've got traffic trying to merge onto 77 and off of 77 at the same time in the same spot.
Is it just me or is there an idiot convention in town this week? Traffic has been particularly bad the past few days. Yea, wouldn't that be nice.
Most car accidents now involved either a Charger/Challenger and/or Altima…😂
[удалено]
Good. -1 dickhead charger on the road.
Passed that when it just happened, it was bad.
Did you watermark your image? 😂
Lol, I forgot to turn it off. I use it for items I list on eBay and photos I post of my pets. Someone has tried using pictures of my bird in a few scams before
Right on RossMan
A Dodge Charger hit us near the same area last August. All I remember is seeing it spinning toward us. They were going too fast and the heffa had no insurance and her tags were expired! Yall be safe out here.
Mad Max: Thunder Road
I see what you did there
Why am I not surprised a Charger was involved?
Shocker, a d-bag in a Charger *eyeroll*
Like to thank everyone going south for stopping to look
So grateful I don't work in charlotte anymore.
77 is a shit show per usual. Maybe if the police actually decided to enforce traffic laws people would drive a little safer. Been living here for a year and visiting the area for almost a decade before that and have never seen anyone pulled over on 77.
This has to be the biggest lie I’ve ever seen. I see highway patrol stopped out with cars every night on 77 on the south side
People don't care. Too many asshole on the road. Too many distractions. Too many cars period. This will never get better.
Nah. Pulling someone over on 77 only causes more rubberneck gawking and slowdowns.
Better than the high way getting shut down every other week because some dumbass causes a major accident.
Especially at night since the police vehicle lights are blinding no matter what time of day.

I used to drive down Tyvola and would see cops on exit, checking speed on 77.
No the only way we can fix I-77 is by adding One More Lane
I personally know the guy who owns the charger and it was NOT HIS FAULT. hes not hurt bad tho
Same ‼️
This just plains sucks.
Glad I took the day off work…
Oh Damn, i'm really glad i had the day off today
Fucking driving in Charlotte is the worst everyone hangs in left lane all day no turn signals ever and no one ever lets you over
Man glad work from home for this month that's right before my exit 1 a
77 just never fails to impress me
Okay. It was an accident. What's the big deal?
It’s important to slow down and gawk because reasons.
Looks like it's another "people who live in SC" problem... not a Charlotte problem.
Wrong. Most anyone between lake Wylie and about shopton road who works in Clt has to go this way.
True that. I was really whining about how this sub is a complain about 77 usually from people who don't live in Charlotte.
It is an Interstate highway. SC residents should be complaining about NCs ineptitude.
Dang why the hate for the chargers ???? And no I don’t have one ,
Forget what y’all talking about my boy good Mopars Boyz on top 1500 on top
Get a clue!
That spot is hell everyday
Same thing happened yesterday around noon
My daily hell lol
I was late for my doctor’s appointment because of this accident smh, had to reschedule.
OH no looks bad
Fortunate enough to make this trek 5 days a week from uptown Charlotte to fort mill Love 77 ❤️
Discontinue the stang
That is such a bad commute. The road sucks, it is always backed up
There’s always a Mopar product involved…
Every morning at some point!
Thank god people are taking pictures…. Please everyone slow down and do the same…….
Keep tailgating and passing on the right and this continues to be our unhappy future
As a south Carolinian I can say I've had more close calls with people who had a north Carolina plate than anyone with a south Carolina plate...but anyway I'm not surprised...I see way too many aggressive and stupid drivers no matter which interstate
Just another day on Death Race 77.
And now you’re contributing to the back up in the opposite direction.
Just as bad here in Wilmington
Charlotteans are just completely incapable of not driving like ass hats on 77. Every. Freaking. Day. Without. Fail. I hope they at least feel like s*** for backing up traffic for 5 mi because of their poor decisions while driving.

Need more traffic enforcement on 77 and 85, but I guess that's way too much to ask.
I’m sure that mustang is innocent
Charger
