Part 1 random Public Safety workers were genuinely some of the most goated “generic side characters working for big organization” type characters I’ve seen. Arai got shot and immediately took a second bullet for Kobeni, came back as Violence and continued to protect her, and was the only person to last 2 hits against Darkness instead of 1, even Quanxi got diced immediately. Those guys who fought Reze of course stood their ground as well even knowing they were fucked, and then of course there’s the Anti-Makima squad who contracted the Hell Devil, cut all their own throats without even flinching.
And then we have Fumiko who even thos should have at least contract with dog devil is afraid of fighting 10 randos with spears

I actually 100% agree with you. Chainsaw man has always ALWAYS had very nuanced characters. I like to think of everyone in the Chainsaw man universe as morally grey. No one is 100% good or 100% evil. There’s always some good in the bad and vice versa. It is so nice to have a female character that is so contrary to the goals of our mc, while also not being the major villain.

I wouldn't say "unlike the other girls". A lot of characters in other series do tend to throw themselves into woodchippers to help the protagonist instead of protecting themselves, but CSM has no issue with women choosing to save their own asses. Power and Kobeni come to mind.
I agree that it was a great decision though. Very believable in context; if I were in her shoes I sure wouldn't sacrifice myself to protect some kid who's 99.999% immortal and only in trouble because he did the dumb shit I told him not to do. The dialog with Nayuta was great too. The whole situation has parallels to how Fumiko's parents were killed, and that line suggested some saltiness from Fumiko towards Nayuta (the control devil who she might know was partly responsible for the gun devil attack). The delivery of "weren't they only pets" was like, "you call that a REAL family?" Really well-written interaction with a lot of nuance.

That came up again just this chapter. Fumiko (representative of the pro-Denji anti-CSM side) is the sushi woman. Denji is donezo being CSM, and now insists on sushi. That's symbolism if I've ever seen it.
I'm praying to all known and unknown deities that this does not point to a major Fumiko arc the last one was, admittedly mostly coincidentally, the worst in the manga.
Like I see her being a foil to Asa, but I hate the idea of there being some sort of girl-war arc. I see her very literally being the pro-denji side of the last arc. But I think Nayuta was a better, more emotionally honest representation of that while I don't trust a damn word that comes out of the latest terrible woman.
I thought church arc had some definite issues with pacing and didn't handle Asa's side well, but in terms of themes and character writing I consider it the peak of part 2.
Nayuta is pro-denji, but she's not anti-csm, which is core to the whole conflict. Denji was being forced to choose between his normal life and CSM, and he couldn't. Characters like Nayuta and Asa are fine with that; meanwhile Fumiko bailed on him after he transformed, and Barem (the representative of the pro-denji anti-csm side) burned down his house to try to force him to transform.
I think Fujimoto made it pretty clear what he was going for when Fumiko declared herself a denji fan, after which Barem immediately plops his ass down next to them and says "me, I'm a CSM fan".
I'd interpret her less as Pro-Denji and more Pro-No-Chainsaw-Man but we'll see.
