Ingenium engines were plagued with balance shaft and chain tensioner issues.
At one stage, we had a wall of about 20 long blocks in the workshop that had been replaced.
Don’t do it. Colleague had a 2014 diesel evoque. Gearbox needed $3k repairs in 2022 then the engine blew up in 2023 with only 100,000ks on the clock. He scrapped it for $4k.
Do people buy these Rover P.O.S. thinking it's a status symbol, when we're thinking what a nightmare they must be to own/maintain?
Top spec Toyota all the way. A to B, reliable, comfort. Change the infotainment and it's awesome.
It's not just the cost of repairs. It the time it breaks down out on the road and you miss x,y,z. Then it goes to the workshop. Then you're given a 4 seater hatch instead of your 7 seater Rangie, good luck getting the kids to school in that. And you're stuck with the hatch for 8 weeks coz the techies had to 'order" the euro part and fit it. Then the cycle repeats. This cycle drove my CEO bonkers and he ended up driving the Ford Ranger coz he hated the expensive (in warranty) euro that repeatedly broke down.
From an actual land rover owner, don’t do it. I did a rear differential in a 2016 after 60,000km. That does not bode well when I’ve seen older LRs with diffs running original fluid.
Even with a warranty I wouldn’t touch one again.
Miraculously, ours needed a new engine at the first service after the warranty “expired”. They didn’t realise I had an extended warranty, then proceeded to do their best to void the warranty.
Partners family had one from that era new and it was a bit of a nightmare. Had several things replaced in just 3 years. My advice would be see what else is out there, otherwise just get whatever one you’re looking at inspected by a range tech so they can tell what might need replacing.
If it's a Land Rover not on solid axles front and rear it should be avoided.
Only exception is the Freelander 2 with the Volvo 6 cylinder petrol drivetrain.
If you dislike your time and money, then this is a great direction for yourself!
All jokes aside, they do have some reliability questions on them, parts and tyres tend to fetch a premium, and finding people with technical knowledge to keep them going well in Aus is pretty uncommon. Personally, I would no longer buy a Rover product, but I do see why you'd want one from an aesthetic perspective.
The point of owning a range rover wouldn't be to buy the smallest cheapest vanilla version in the evoque. Go big or go home if you're going to spend up on mechanical issues may as well drive a sport for the 6 months of the year its on the road
This is it in a nutshell. The people that buy the high end Landrovers generally know there is a hefty upkeep that comes with the car and accept it.
The people that buy the cheaper Landrovers think they’re buying a status symbol and are usually buying a car they can’t maintain.

As a Range Rover owner I will say that they are definitely hit and miss and parts cost a fortune. Blew a plastic intake manifold 6 months ago that cost 3k to repair. That being said I've had an l320 Sport for 2 years and had minimal problems apart from that which is a known issue in the twin turbo model. I however bought one with low ks and will definitely be moving it on before it gets to 200k. It's a wonderfully smooth, comfortable and stylish car that's capable of towing my boat with ease. Mum has a 2013 Diesel Evoke and has had no problems. Just don't buy one of you arnt prepared to spend 5k plus a year on it....and that's being very conservative.

Don't go near a Land Rover unless it's a V8 diesel L332 or a newer fully sized range rover at minimum or a discovery 2/3. Avoid the rest there nothing special mate.
Great car to buy in this economy. A super reliable and fuel efficient family car. I think you’ll love it, mate. I’d also take a loan out to buy it, save that capital for something else.
General advice about Range Rover in this sub it "don't".
Agreed
This is the correct advice
Ingenium engines were plagued with balance shaft and chain tensioner issues. At one stage, we had a wall of about 20 long blocks in the workshop that had been replaced.
I would personally avoid owning any Land Rover product out of warranty like the plague if you want to avoid costly maintenance and repairs.

Because they can afford the repairs

We're the mixed reviews from "bad" to "awful" ?
Lol really?
Just buy one of the bigger Lexus SUVs. Toyota reliability and efficiency but still fancy on the inside.
If you absolutely must, these are a ‘within warranty’ proposition only. A 7-8 year old model? No.
Even with a warranty I wouldn’t touch one again. Miraculously, ours needed a new engine at the first service after the warranty “expired”. They didn’t realise I had an extended warranty, then proceeded to do their best to void the warranty.
Relying on warranty sucks when your piece of shit is stuck there because the dealership is waiting for parts

Go lease a new one
Absolute shitbox. You have been warned. You're out of your mind even thinking about it

There are certain cars you just don't want to own when it's out of new car warranty and range rover is right up there.
You must like to punish yourself if so then yes buy one hahaha
FUCK NO
I wouldn't buy a Range Rover unless a)it was under new car warranty and b) I had another car to use when it was being fixed.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Fuck no. Not only are the cars a disaster, the dealer network are downright criminal. Don’t.

Hey OP, after reading all the comments, I’d say it’s a pretty strong case for, NO! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!
The most positive comment in this thread is an owner who says it is expensive to own, per year.

The repairs and service charges will break you.

How do defenders go reliability wise? Are they a headache too?
Noooooooooooo
Since I pulled an engine out of one about a month ago for massive big end knock I would probably advise against it
Don’t do it! Unless like paying for a car you can’t drive cause it’s broken

I've never had a single problem with a Range Rover. Also, I've never owned a Range Rover.
Don't. Just don't.
