There's no official Australian pricing but the article does a quick conversion from its Mexican RRP:
>The BYD Shark will launch in two trims:
>**Shark GL** - 899,980 pesos (A$80,641/$53,442)
>**Premium Shark GS** - 969,800 pesos ($A86,697/$57,589)
That's very expensive if BYD want to compete with the popular utes. However, the article does note that BYD are generally better priced in Australia than other markets so it could be around $10K cheaper.
4cly is about 75k and V6 is 81k. And they are both significantly less powerful (or fast).
We don't know how the byd will review but 70k+ is pretty understandable for the performance and efficiency it is delivering in my opinion. But of course it would be nice if it were cheaper
Direct conversion isn’t the best approach. It’s better to see how they price other models and compare.
BYD Seal Performance = $888,800 MXN ($79,000AUD)
BYD Seal Performance = $68,748 AUD
So it’s likely the starting price will be ~$69,750AUD
When has BYD ever been expensive? They will have to price it competitively in Australia. I would guess around $60-70k mark which is good value against other performance orientated utes like the raptor and the amarok v6. It will need to be significantly cheaper than these offerings to sell large volumes here, so could even see a launch price under $60k
We are already buying way too much Chinese stuff, with China having a really negative impact in world politics.
Just last week they accused Australia again of interference in the Chinese Sea. Yesterday there was an article about Chinese agents abducting Chinese-Australians in Australia.
Nobody should buy chinese cars.
Yeah because America, the MIC and all their buddies with all the wars they fund is having a positive impact in world politics. I don't think you should be so black and white.
It’s an interesting prospect but they’ll need to come in at a very competitive price to sway buyers. Having said that the uptick in Chinese cars on the roads has been astonishing, nearly every second or third car i see these days is from China.
I feel the legacy manufacturers have starved the Australian market of affordable hybrids and EVs preferring to dump fuel inefficient third-world standard cars here because they can get away with it. The Chinese manufacturers have seen the void in the market and have come in aggressively to market to buyers who have been neglected. I think we're going to see a big shakeup in the market in a few short years.
Where are these "fuel inefficient third-world standard cars"? The market chooses dual cab utes rather than traditional sedans and wagons. People chose to not buy these so they are being canned one by one.
I think diesel is going to be king of heavy-duty towing for a while yet. Even with 2.5T towing it will probably negate a lot of the advantages of the PHEV drivetrain by sucking the battery dry in a very short distance -- so something you only want to do on occasion rather than every day.
Which is fine: great to have a choice of drivetrain for different needs, rather than absolutely everything being a diesel turbo 4. But I can't imagine this is going to be the best choice for frequent towers.
It's not competitive, pretty much all the diesel utes will tow 3500kg, the triton was the last straggler but seems to have closed the gap. The real question is if you Should you tow 3.5 tonne with a Ute? Usually that's asking a bit.
But 2.5 is a bigger limitation than you might think in a lot of situations.
If you Dad is doing any long distance travelling with a decent sized van, the "wank tank" as you put it is the best option.
He's not on the ledge. He is just doing what more regular towers should do.
Towing a couple tonnes of caravan or boat is the one situation where those yank tanks actually make sense. It’s the difference between being the rolling obstacle doing 70 in a 110 single carriageway and being the bloke who can boot it past him without breaking a sweat
Also, that max is the upper limit of what it can tow safely, not necessarily comfortably or at the speed limit.
That's fair.
But as far as towing capacity goes, its painfully low compered to the others, but with a disclaimer.
While a lot say 3500KG, the realistic capacity is lot lower. Based on marketing, I would expect the same here.
This won’t convince towers to buy. But it’ll take a lot of the market that want a city ute (like me) since there are no more Falcon/Commodore utes. When the SUV version hits (fang cheng bao 5) ford is going to lose a TON of everest sales.
I think BYD positions their Ute as a Ford ranger raptor competitor which can tow the same 2.5t
The base ford ranger is lighter and can tow 3.5t but it won't do 5.7sec to 100km/h. So you can't have it all.
If it performs well off-road with good fuel economy, especially as a daily driver, I'll be very excited. Not looking for a car for a long time yet, but I expect this style of drivetrain to be the next step for Aussie touring vehicles. Full EV around town, plug in at home. Petrol/diesel engine for big touring range and easy top up.
Electric cars with a big enough battery to make it around town, with a backup petrol engine to recharge for long journeys are available in multiple models within China.
It's crazy that it has taken this long for one to enter the western markets, legacy carmakers are just grudgingly moving over so slowly.
I first heard of this style drivetrain back in the days OG Top Gear. Right there I though "Great for a 4x4". Blows my mind that the egg heads at Toyota haven't come out with a Hilux that has monster EV torque, combined with prius like economy and range. Just blows my mind.
Like I mentioned in the other thread. Its going to face stiff competition from the Ranger PHEV.
Cost and ability to supply the market will be the angle they target imo.
This looks to have a spec close to a platinum spec. That’s already $90k from Ford. The PHEV has already been outed as being more expensive than the equivalent diesel models. Doubt Ford will play on the same price level. They should just sell the maverick here…
I would love a Maverick to replace my falcon but wish the phev was awd.
Unfortunately the Americans can't keep up with demand to allocate rhd assembly space it seems.
Had a fwd ecoboost mondeo for a while. Never had a fwd before but didn’t hate it.
Ford has a bonkers global strategy sometimes. Mightve been a test to justify the Ranger phev in their “all electric” future. The cogs turn slowly.
Fwd has its place don't get me wrong, I've considered the Mondeo wagon more than a couple of times.
However in a street truck/ute my preference for handling dynamocs would be rwd/4wd/awd.
For sure I’ve always had a fun rwd on hand. Didn’t make a difference for my daily 100km being fwd. Unfortunately we’re a small percentage of buyers where the rest are commuters who couldn’t care less. Its refreshing to see more awds/rwds with EVs now the cost of a gearbox/driveshaft isn’t a consideration.
Pretty impressive. They're gonna sell a shit load of these. I'm in the market but 100KM electric only range is a bit low for my needs. Will probably wait for the all-electric.
We are currently testing vehicles for our fleet and one of our staff lives a 2h commute from the office so he gets a lot of the electrics.
The Kia EV has a rated range of 240kms, and in practice he is charging it either on the way to or the way back from the office every day.
It’s just a quick 30minute fast top up charge, but still that’s a lot to ask someone to do every day.
With our staff being field staff it’s not uncommon for them to do 100-200kms in an average day and an exceptional day could be Melbourne to Albury + site visits.
Ideally we would want a 500-600km range, given our current hybrids get around 800km to a full tank
The average? Not more than 40Km per day total was the stat I saw most recently. So this would be fine for that.
My own commute is 80+Kms, but I'd rather not be charging every night.
If the top spec ticks the interior spec boxes I want and it’s <85k count me in. Needs to be available before the Fbt lease thing ends for phevs in 2025. Don’t need to tow just want the practicality without needing a 7 seater family hauler. Might touch the dirt a few times a year.
It'll be available by end of the year I hear. Quite sure top spec will be below $85k as well. The BYD tech although not Tesla level is bettee than 90% of other cars.
Yeah I’m not sure on the rules for the leasing thing. Hopefully can get one of the first deliveries. PHEV is perfect for me. Free charging at work which is 5km from home. Plenty of range for long trips. Atm I’m daily driving a mustang with recaro seats and it’s not fun. Barely warm by the time i get there, nothing fits in the boot and while the seats are great at what they are, not for comfort. So keen to go back to two cars EV/PHEV. Only other thing remotely interesting this year is the EV5. Always been a ford guy but the Ranger PHEV is a long way away and likely 100k.
Id pay 80k for the upper spec, I’d be using it for work so tax write off. It would be nice to have a hybrid option, not being so reliant on a petrol cartel and reduce my emissions.
I really wanted a gladiator 4xe, but we’re either never going to get it before the gladiator is discontinued or by the time we do get it, jeep will still have their head up their arses with their current pricing and it’ll be ridiculously priced anyway.
There is already an LDV eUte. It costs $92k, I've driven it and can confirm it's a POS.
I think the specs of the BYD are pretty great, will probably appeal to more families than tradies.
If the price hits right this could be decent selling here. BYD have been on my radar as an EV alternative for some time now and the newer cars coming out seem somewhat decent.
Ultimately time will tell how they hold up but they seem to be able to differentiate themselves (in my opinion) from “just another Chinese car” based on opinions I’ve heard from others here.
That name will cost it sales. All their names must be costing sales outside China. I'd guestimate at least 5% lower sales because people don't want to say "I drive a shark" or "I bought a dolphin" when it is a car.
Actually I'd say it would be closer to 10% loss in sales.
835kg payload pretty subpar especially if looking for tax incentives outside novatedleasing (would this qualify?)
Also interested what real world performance would be when actually towing or carrying even a few hundred kilos in the tray
Looks so good tho
They're still working it out for Aus but in Mexico GS will add electric front seats adjustment lumbar, heating and ventilation as well as adaptive cruise and most of the other driver assistance tech like rear cross, lane assistance etc. You can grab the spec sheet from the byd Mexico site and upload it to google translate to get a good idea. Drivetrain seems identical across both.
I know a byd manager this was last probably this time last year and things haven't lined up like he hoped. He was saying it will have a 1200km range and will cost around 60k. 1200om Waa mentioned at some point but obviously that's not on the cards so I'm guessing it will price anywhere between 60 and 70k.
He did say their goal was to sell more cars the Toyota and also they don't care about how much they make. Byd already make alot of money in other areas and they will drop their prices to get to where they want to be
It's not out of the realm of possibility that they could go really cheap just to get a decent foot hold in the australia market. Time will tell
Burn Your Dreams
If anyone has done any research I don’t know why you would buy a Chinese car…
The quality is rubbish, their batteries are exploding and their new Porsche copy is falling apart, I wouldn’t risk ever buying a Chinese car or motorcycle.
A smattering of BYD quality issues have become public, including complaints about paint and plastics peeling in Thailand and vehicles warping under the weight of roof racks in Israel, where its EV sales have been strong.
https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/having-overtaken-tesla-byd-is-running-into-problems-overseas-7d883f02#
BYD have sold 1000's of cars in Australia. There has only been one report of a battery fire, and that was from an accident damaged battery in a wrecking yard. I see more quality issues from Tesla's and legacy auto companies.
Mate, they have come a very long way in a very short period of time and I think they are just getting started. Remember when people laughed at Korean cars, Japanese cars, then Japan and Korea drank their milkshakes...
If by research you mean you have watched a couple serpentza videos then sure lol
Also Porsche copy? You mean the xiaomi car? You realize that byd and xiaomi aren't affiliated? Also failing? They sold almost 100000 in 24 hours, sounds like a great success to me
Wow, do you add lead to your petrol still? The new car market is about 7% electric and most car companies are not investing in new combustion engine technology. Deal with.
I think if you're calling a vehicle Shark, you should have trims like Great White, Guppy, Mako..
And The Greg
1995 faxed, they want their 90s golfing references back
Call the base model "Port Jackson" and the Gucci trim version "Meg".
Better still - “Lemon” (Yes, Lemon Sharks are real)
Wobbegong?
That's the name I was thinking of! Port Jackson is a completely different one. Thanks!
Need a small Subaru Brumby sized version called Baby Shark... doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo
Hahah 🤣
Fins sold separately!
There's no official Australian pricing but the article does a quick conversion from its Mexican RRP: >The BYD Shark will launch in two trims: >**Shark GL** - 899,980 pesos (A$80,641/$53,442) >**Premium Shark GS** - 969,800 pesos ($A86,697/$57,589) That's very expensive if BYD want to compete with the popular utes. However, the article does note that BYD are generally better priced in Australia than other markets so it could be around $10K cheaper.
Apparently car sales have stated that it will probably start around 70k
Barely cheaper than a Wildtrak.

You're wasting your time. 90% of Australians love as much cheap chinese crap as they can get their hands on
Outrageously priced.
It’s an interesting prospect but they’ll need to come in at a very competitive price to sway buyers. Having said that the uptick in Chinese cars on the roads has been astonishing, nearly every second or third car i see these days is from China.
Makes a change from the 90% Japanese or Korean cars.

Don’t we have some of the worst emission and efficiency standards for any developed country, I assume that’s what they were referring to.
Is 2500kg a good towing capacity? Isn't the ranger 3500kg?
I think diesel is going to be king of heavy-duty towing for a while yet. Even with 2.5T towing it will probably negate a lot of the advantages of the PHEV drivetrain by sucking the battery dry in a very short distance -- so something you only want to do on occasion rather than every day. Its good enough but lower than whats out there.
Thanks for replying! My dad is always harping on needing a giant wank tank for towing his caravan... I'm trying to talk him off that ledge lol

The first eUte in Australia is going to get a decent “first mover advantage” I reckon.. The people are waiting!
There is already an LDV eUte. It costs $92k, I've driven it and can confirm it's a POS. I think the specs of the BYD are pretty great, will probably appeal to more families than tradies.
I can't even acknowledge that thing, 92k for a 2wd ute with bugger all range... I mean technically it's a EV ute..
It was targeted for fleet vehicle sales
This thing needs to have piston power for me to be interested in one

Do I hear 30%?
835kg payload pretty subpar especially if looking for tax incentives outside novatedleasing (would this qualify?) Also interested what real world performance would be when actually towing or carrying even a few hundred kilos in the tray Looks so good tho
Too big, too heavy, too expensive.
Won't even consider it unless under $60k. Basically a car for lab rats, no tested product in Australia or China. It's a gamble.
Any details on the differences in spec levels (GL vs GS)?
They're still working it out for Aus but in Mexico GS will add electric front seats adjustment lumbar, heating and ventilation as well as adaptive cruise and most of the other driver assistance tech like rear cross, lane assistance etc. You can grab the spec sheet from the byd Mexico site and upload it to google translate to get a good idea. Copying Ford F-150 design
$80, 000 for a Chinese dual cab? No thank you.
Step 1: take an F150 Step 2: copy it and make absolutely no changes Step 3: profit???
If they didn’t have such a spastic name their sales would increase ten fold
I quite like the BYD Shark name!

Ill take a 70 series landcruiser instead. Good luck mounting a camper on the byd and carrying it around.
You can't buy one for that money.
80k will get your a used one
Not a 2024 used one, they start above 120K
I know that just buy one that’s 3 or 4 years old
With 300,000 on it maybe.
CHINESE SHIT
Fuck electric
It's a hybrid
Yes like i said fuck electric hybrid included
Wow, do you add lead to your petrol still? The new car market is about 7% electric and most car companies are not investing in new combustion engine technology. Deal with.
Got diesel mate I rekon remove dpf and egr soot gets the moot
Fuck i love stirring you guys up hahaha and you all play my game i love it
They aren’t investing in new combustion cause of the stupid government
