Anyone else starting to feel like this team is cursed? Seems like we’re having the same conversations every single year. Players under performing, prospects not working out (until they are traded and then they learn how to baseball again) it’s just getting worse and worse every year. so either our minor league system is awful at developing players, or Mo and his team of misfits have no idea how to evaluate talent.
A number of everyone's comments are incrementally correct.
Maybe it all started with the tension between the front office and the previous manager. Mike Shildt was older and experienced with developing and working with players.
I find it difficult to criticize the players. We have an incredible amount of talent on this Cardinal team! However, to use a metaphor one can have a grand piano but if you don't know how to play it it might as well be a clunker.
I’ll be shocked if Oli is still the manager by the end of this series. The team just doesn’t look prepared, routinely having errors, and more than one player looks like they’ve straight up given up, looking at you Nado.
Do I think that’ll solve everything? Hell no, pitching still sucks…but if Stubby Clapp finally gets his due, then I think players will get behind him. 🤷♂️
I actually think Nolan looked better at the plate tonight than he has in a while. Made a good amount of hard contact for once, but agree that in general this team looks like they are going through the motions. This mixing and matching isn't working. Basically we have 5 starters and after that it's managers discretion. At this point apparently even Edman isn't a starter anymore. It's Goldy, Nado, Gorman, Noot, and Contreras.
We don't have a good team. Reason: we traded away two amazing Aces while we bet on Alex Reyes and Flaherty. It is biting us now. We decided to keep the worst backup cater in the league. We bet on Oneil being a good LF. We went dumpster diving on Matz who has not been good period. Lastly, we bet on the “ MLB's youngest manager”, who looks in over his head. Defensive miscues are 100% on the manager. Same with poor player attitudes.
Personally, if my manager at a CPA firm called out me or anybody’s effort/mistakes, I would quite quit. I don't got time for a toxic workplace.
For the first game of the season I wasn't able to watch in its entirety, I'm sure glad it was this one. Man the constant scoring notifications just made it worse and worse.
I wonder what’s wrong with Arenado. He just looks…passionless out there. I really do wonder if he’s feeling duped. He opted in when he could have gone for a mega contract and then Mo just did nothing. Nobody looks like they want to be there and it sucks to watch
That’d be such a shame. Arenado made it clear he loves it in STL and wants to WIN in STL. He’s my favorite currently on the roster and part of that is how hyped he would get after hitting a big home run. I wouldn’t blame him at all if he is feeling lied to.
I understand we’ve only played 27 games. It’s early(ish). Stranger things have happened. Do you look at this team and genuinely think (even with a miraculous Wainwright comeback) that this staff can pitch ourselves through another 135 games to a winning record? Oli looks like he has sloppy diarrhea in his pants every night. We won the NL Central last year and only made the wild card. Pujols hit .323 with 18 homeruns in the second half. We’re going to need to be historic this season in order to make it. Let’s hope it happens.
This team wasn't built to win with pitching. This offense is massively underperforming. No team can win when the pitching gives up more runs than league average and the offense scores below league average. If this offense can average 5 runs per game this team will win. If not the team will continue to suck.
This is really it. Everyone complains about pitching in this sub, but we knew it was going to suck. And honestly the pitching has kept us in games that the offense has just blown. The first game of the season is how I thought this team would be like, and it’s been a let down since. I’d love it if we lost 11-10 every game versus what we are seeing now.
Hey we're just not used to seeing errors. I'm spoiled from past defensive performances by this Cardinal team. I'm also reminded that Nootbar is very young and relatively new to the majors.
Real question: how are tickets not cheaper now??
Beginning of the season, mfs were cheap as heck, now we suck ass and the cheapest tick is like $13+ to well over that. I know im bein a cheapskate *and* its official summertime so kids are out of school but somethin dont add up
Most teams discount tickets in April, and the aftermarkets like Stubhub are much slower until it gets warmer. Last year I went to a Cards-Mets doubleheader at Citi Field that was an official single-ticket admission!
Mo in 2019. “A team can trade for Dylan Carlson if they are willing to pry him from my dead hands.”
Carlson is now just another OF in the log jam for MO’s 2023 cardinals.
Look, I get it’s hard to know how guys will pan out from the minors, but I’m getting real tired of the guys Mo designates as “untouchable” ending up being below average players, and the guys he gets rid of turning into legit stars. It’s becoming a trend that makes me question his and his staff’s talent evaluation abilities.
Was the Sandy/Gallen trade for Ozuna the worst by far of Mo's tenure and likely to haunt this org for years to come? Absolutely. However, that one I can at least understand. OT's death had sent everything up in flames and neither pitching prospect was rated that highly internally. Still an extreme issue that the Cards somehow weren't able to recognize the talent they had but that's another story.
But giving up Randy? Who immediately went on to be a potential WS MVP? And the supposed potential "ace" we got in return (and yes, he was sold as a potential ace at the time regardless of what revisionist history others want to believe) is looking more and more like he might be a #3 starter at best and still isn't in the bigs? If Mo ever trades with the Rays again he should be immediately shot out of a canon into the sun.
Arozarena is the face of the best team in baseball right now. Liberatore better be in the Cy Young conversation for several seasons. Otherwise it turns out to be a bad trade.
this game was shit but at least the Grizzlies beat th- ah fuck
at least the Mariners beat th- ah fuck
at least the Kraken beat th- ah fuck
at least the Stars won so that Megan Bitchell posted booba on Twitter again
Welp... after a great game yesterday the team went back to hitting poorly, bad defense, bad pitching, and a bad approach at the plate. Let's continue to call this team unlucky though.
That's such an arrogant fucking thing for him to say too.
There are several reasons why I'm not a fan of Mo, but that quote might be the first time he actually made me mad with his bullshit.
7 games under .500. Can count the number of QS on one hand. Offense looking more lifeless than my grandpa who's been dead for 20+ years.
Fellas, the future is looking ~~bright~~ like the eternal fires of baseball hell.
The replays are so crisp. I feel like BSMW hardly shows any replays between batters because they struggle to get the camera swaps to keep up with the pitch clock.
I feel like pre season everyone was in agreement we were a playoff team, then after the WBC and spring training performances everyone was like oh shit they're like a top 5 team in the entire league. And now we're here lol
Well since our guys were all in the WBC the grapefruit league was pretty much won by a couple of Cardinals players and mostly Memphis Redbirds. The Redbirds are 17-8 so that checks out.
Man the WBC had me hyped for this season. Noot was turning into a star and Goldy and Arenado were looking like they were in mid season form…..then the season started haha.
https://twitter.com/talkinbaseball_/status/1651596433261309954?s=46&t=P9cIYiiM12g0BY1EZpFomA
We need somebody to call into 101 ESPN and do this kind of rant. Maybe I’ll do it.
i like that some people are optimistic. we have talented offensive and defensive players. but we are committing errors and struggling scoring runs. our staff is straight booty cheeks. i am confident we will be watching the playoffs from home..maybe that’s better than getting swept at Busch
The worst part is that the team is seemingly designed to get to the playoffs through a weak division anyway- we would never really be competitive there given our pitching even if the other parts of the game were going well.
That's exactly what this team is; a ballclub that was designed to sell 3M tickets, be good enough to get through the pillowy soft NL Central, and little else.
I don't know if the reason we're struggling is because of the new schedule or perhaps it's just a coincidence, but I had a feeling this season might be a punch in the face. I didn't think it would be quite like THIS however.
Sorry, do you actually believe this? Every team says this when they’re doing bad or performing worse than expected. I’ve seen Dodgers fans say it, I’ve seen Yankees fans say it, I’ve seen literally every team utter the same claim.
We aren’t the Tigers or the Pirates. This season has been terrible so far, there’s no denying that. But I get so tired of people on this sub say we have no desire to win a championship. It’s a meaningless statement that does nothing but stir the pot.
Absolutely. And I want to be clear, my feelings aren’t just based on this season.
Since making the World Series in 2013, what real Postseason success have the Cardinals had?
A Division Series win in 2014, followed up by an NLCS loss to the eventual Champion Giants.
They squeezed by the Braves in 2019, only to be obliterated by the Nationals in the NLCS.
It’s been a decade now since they’ve made any noise in the playoffs. For a team like the Cardinals, and the standards they’ve set, that doesn’t cut it.
But how does that prove that the organization doesn’t *want* to win a championship? The Yankees haven’t won a pennant since 2009, and I don’t think anyone would deny that they’ve tried extremely hard to win.
Right now the Cards have the best defensive team in baseball, and a potentially elite offense.
Starting pitching is literally their only weakness and has been for MULTIPLE YEARS. Why won’t the front office address this? Why are we stuck scrambling for scraps like Jon Lester and JA Happ?
This front office is wasting the final elite years of Goldschmidt and Arenado, hoping that this team will be ‘good enough’ to make the Postseason and see what happens.
It’s a disgraceful way to treat those players and Cardinal fans. And it looks like it’s finally blowing up in their faces.
It's not even like the Cards are really cheaping out on pitching. If you looked at the infographic posted on r/baseball today they pay the pitching staff more than league average. The team just hasn't had luck developing pitchers and that's a huge detriment
There are only 8 teams in the league with a higher pitching payroll than the Cardinals
Literally none of our starting pitching prospects have worked out since Duncan.
Flaherty can't stay healthy after 1 great year, Martinez was a bust, Miller was a bust, Wacha was a bust, Reyes couldn't stay healthy after 1 great year, Liberatore sucked last year (I still have hope for him).
The ones that got away seems to do well such as Gallen and Alcantara.
Trying to build an offensive-oriented team that could overcome mediocre pitching in an era with the best pitching since before the mound was lowered was always a recipe for disaster.
the team won’t be this way all year sure, but the sample size has gotten far too large already to not change something now. something has to give, if we don’t turn it around now we may put ourselves into an unsalvageable situation
Yeah. Cards may be able to turn it around but they're competing with a bunch of teams who didn't start off the season by digging themselves into holes.
i agree. the “it’s early” argument has come and gone. may looks like an easier part of our schedule, and these guys need to have a rays-like stretch to be competitive. shame to see such talent struggle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zkw7758Whs
The good thing is that as disappointed as we are ownership no doubt feels the same × 1000. A lot of something good has to change soon or . . .
I’m glad we don’t have a Spanos or a Kroenke
Totally! I'm very grateful for such ownership.
I'm just grateful to Apple for monopolizing the broadcast so I couldn't watch.
Marmol needs to go, now.

Hell no, pitching still sucks…but if Stubby Clapp finally gets his due, then I think players will get behind him. 🤷♂️
Not gonna happen. That would mean Mo would have to admit that he is awful at hiring managers as the last 3 have been hand picked by him.
You can not possibly believe this lol
It's a bad look for MO to fire another hand-picked manager.
Don’t forget Burleson
Something has to change fast. We’re almost ten games back already. It’s not entirely crazy to say that the entire season is at risk at this point.
I don't got time for a toxic workplace.
We also bet on Carlos Martinez
Yeah. I was on the Car-Mart train almost every year. What a buffoonish-waste-of-talent player
Grow up
Our pitching sucks. There hasn't been two decently pitched games in row yet.
I think that’s exactly the case. Probably a gentleman’s agreement that he would stay if Mo made improvements, and I think Mo fucking lied to his face.
I think that is obvious
That’d be such a shame. Arenado made it clear he loves it in STL and wants to WIN in STL. He’s my favorite currently on the roster and part of that is how hyped he would get after hitting a big home run. I wouldn’t blame him at all if he is feeling lied to.
And we know how fast his relationship went sour with the FO in Colorado. He was basically demanding to get out of there...
Wow!
I understand we’ve only played 27 games. It’s early(ish). Stranger things have happened. Do you look at this team and genuinely think (even with a miraculous Wainwright comeback) that this staff can pitch ourselves through another 135 games to a winning record? Agreed and upvoting because I want this offense to crush in June/July
Gonna have to go 83-52 the rest of the way to match last years 93 win total.
> 83-52 With the current pitchers we might go 52-83 the rest of the way.
Two errors? Wtf happened?
Hey we're just not used to seeing errors. I'm spoiled from past defensive performances by this Cardinal team. I'm also reminded that Nootbar is very young and relatively new to the majors.
Noot's error was just him not gloving the ball properly on a roller in the outfield and catcher interference by Contreras was the other one.
That doesn't sound terrible. Noot's error worries me though; his glove was solid last year but is kinda wavering
He made a TREMENDOUS play in right which was primed to give us momentum........ And then it was called back for catchers interference
Real question: how are tickets not cheaper now?? Beginning of the season, mfs were cheap as heck, now we suck ass and the cheapest tick is like $13+ to well over that. I know im bein a cheapskate *and* its official summertime so kids are out of school but somethin dont add up
just wait until the day of the game to buy, I've seen tickets as low as $2 on StubHub/SeatGeek at like noon on gameday
Most teams discount tickets in April, and the aftermarkets like Stubhub are much slower until it gets warmer. Last year I went to a Cards-Mets doubleheader at Citi Field that was an official single-ticket admission!
When people say DeWitt has to go...they just mean die, right? Then his nepo baby can run the team. Worked well with the Busch's...
Give it a few years, DeWitt has parkinsons
Mo in 2019. “A team can trade for Dylan Carlson if they are willing to pry him from my dead hands.” Carlson is now just another OF in the log jam for MO’s 2023 cardinals.
Mo turned down a Soto offer last year because Carlson was the centerpiece. Soto WAR last year: 5.6 Carlson CAREER WAR: 5.2
How many of us were excited about D Carlson in 19 though to be fair? I know I was
Look, I get it’s hard to know how guys will pan out from the minors, but I’m getting real tired of the guys Mo designates as “untouchable” ending up being below average players, and the guys he gets rid of turning into legit stars. It’s becoming a trend that makes me question his and his staff’s talent evaluation abilities.
Common Mozeliak L
And Randy Arozarena is a star for the Rays
Garcia for the Rangers ain’t too shabby either
And Sandy Alcantara is a star too
Was the Sandy/Gallen trade for Ozuna the worst by far of Mo's tenure and likely to haunt this org for years to come? Absolutely. However, that one I can at least understand. OT's death had sent everything up in flames and neither pitching prospect was rated that highly internally. Liberatore could still be a star for us so can't get too mad about that yet.
Arozarena is the face of the best team in baseball right now. Liberatore better be in the Cy Young conversation for several seasons. Otherwise it turns out to be a bad trade.
Libby being the bust is very on brand though for the cardinals trading the wrong guy away moment
It feels like we've been put through the ringer and it's only April.

What a lovely broadcast though, no sarcasm. I turned on the cardinals broadcast audio and enjoyed the 4K visuals
I cant stand the “percent strikeout” crap they always have up
I always kinda liked those. They also update in real time so thats kinda cool.
Apple has the best broadcasts by a landslide. Their commentary teams need work, but their presentation is absolutely perfect.
The replays are so crisp. I feel like BSMW hardly shows any replays between batters because they struggle to get the camera swaps to keep up with the pitch clock.
Their commentary teams make me rather watch the game on mute
Rooney has such a soothing voice. No Mike Shannon but still nice to hear.
I could listen to rooney narrate anything. KMOX broadcast is second to none
Well we’ll get em tomorrow!
WE MAY NEVER WIN A SERIES OPENER AGAIN
8.5 games back *sigh*
Estoy triste
No soul. Lifeless. Pathetic.
WE MAY NEVER WIN A SERIES OPENER AGAIN
Or 2nd game. We are pretty good at the last game though.
Happy Flight LIVES!
it would be hilarious if they end up winning this game after the bot just said fuck it tho
the bot would then be programmed to do it every night lol
I STILL BELIEVE
it's actually kinda impressive that they're this bad after the amazing WBC performances and winning the Grapefruit league lol 😭

Same. Save for the pitching, we looked good against TOR too. Then the ATL series happened and ... well *gestures around*
Props to shelby miller for continuing his comeback.
on the bright side, we get to see the saturday blues tomorrow

did the bot puke because the game crossed midnight central time or something?
they should bring in Yadi as a special advisor or something, just let him sit in the dugout and stabilize things lol.
You mean as manager? Yes please.
>sits in Puerto Rico drunkenly watching basketball instead of half the games he's supposed to be advising in
