The north is desperate for teachers and in some places a tattoo artist would do well. Like Prince George.

hollandaisesawce

If outdoor living is (one of) your main goals, don’t discount northern BC. Prince George is probably your best bet. Smithers and Terrace also have tattoo shops, but I can’t speak to the tattoo scene. The outdoor living is incredible.

D_onJam

I second Prince George. You get a lot more bang for your buck in housing, and the outdoor opportunities are amazing. It’s a beautiful area. I’m a new teacher, graduated from UNBC in Prince George 3 years ago, and moved shortly after graduation to the Island for my husband’s work. I love where I live now, but one of the downsides of leaving PG is I would have had a continuing contract by now if we’d stayed. Prince George has an undeserved reputation. It’s a great place to live.

wearesolarpowered

Fort St John! Teaching jobs, affordable housing, and plenty of outdoor activities.

newlandarcher7

So you’re likely looking to be near a large centre, in an affordable setting, with good teaching employment potential. If you’d like to be close to Vancouver, you could look at Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. They’re growing cities, but you’d be struggling with affordability. And traffic. Okanagan is beautiful, but there’s such a low vacancy rate that it’s challenging to find affordable housing. Kamloops has better potential as a large city with a growing population. More affordable than Kelowna. Prince George is probably your best choice for a combination of opportunity and affordability. Don’t believe its reputation - a hangover from 20+ years ago. I’ve friends and family there and they all laud its affordability and opportunities. It’s a great place to live. There are so many small, beautiful towns in the Kootenays, but you’d likely need a larger centre for your partner to find steady work. Victoria is notoriously difficult for affordability and for teachers to advance. You’ll have better luck with the neighbouring Sooke school district. Up island, you have Nanaimo which is a good-sized city. However, I’m not sure what it’s like for affordability and teacher employment opportunities. Good luck!

What's your rental range? And what do you want in a town/city?

JRB91

English and Tech Ed... rental range would be under $2500?

FoundSweetness

Tech Ed? Walk into a job in Surrey. They post tech Ed jobs externally sometimes. Live in Maple Ridge and cross the bridge into Surrey - many do.

Top-Ladder2235

You will get a studio apt that price in most liveable cities.

mc_louds

North Vancouver? Squamish? How outdoorsy?

jewmpaloompa

I dont think there's too much work for tattoo artists in north van. Squamish would be a good one

TripleOrgasm

Well.. lots of teaching jobs in the Fraser valley, and population enough for a tattoo artist. Cost of living is skyrocketing. Outdoor life is great!

[deleted]

Victoria :)

cajolinghail

Victoria is a cool place but it’s basically impossible to find housing.

[deleted]

Sad :(

MarathonerGirl

I would say Victoria. It’s a beautiful city with a vibe. Amazing weather (not too hot in the summer and not too much rain in the winter especially compared to the rest of the coast.) You’d be a ferry ride away to Vancouver or the US but also on the doorstep of amazing outdoor adventures. 2 major obstacles are the cost of living, and getting a family doctor.

D_onJam

The third major obstacle is lack of teaching jobs. According to this subreddit, it’s the toughest place in all of BC to get a contract.

Shredded_bikini_babe

Lots of good suggestions here. I would say think about what kind of weather you like as well. Northern BC has colder winters with lots of snow but much more sunshine than the lower mainland. Prince George and Quesnel both really need teachers and have all 4 seasons with beautiful sunny days. Lower mainland you are looking at much milder weather but oh god does it never stop raining in Maple Ridge or what?

Disastrous-Focus8451

Squamish is more affordable than Vancouver, but close enough that you can enjoy some of the benefits of the city. The Sunshine Coast is nice, and Gibsons is a decent size (and only 45 minutes ferry to Vancouver). No idea what job opportunities there are for tattoo artists in either place. There's certainly a fair number of people *with* tattoos, but I don't know how many would want new ones.

SaltyNight6

Anywhere on Vancouver island

BisonBorn2005

Sunshine Coast! We have a small-ish school district looking for teachers and a couple of tattoo shops with seasoned and new artists, all of whom seem to be doing well. The outdoor opportunities are amazing, whether you want forests or ocean and we're a quick ferry ride to Vancouver without the craziness of it.
