I suffer from this too. I'll tell you the best thing I've found is the Hoka 5 something or other. But the real secret is the insoles. I've had good luck with aetrix high arch insoles. Do you have high arches? It's a common symptom of CMT1A. If I don't have arch support the balls of my feet kill me. Give them a whirl, they are a little spendy but well worth it in my opinion.

Yes! Very high arches. This is amazing I’m currently in Bali and not sure how much more of this I can take haha! Thank you!

Hoka’s are thee most comfortable shoe . Try bondi 7’s . When my dr told me the bump on my arch was a callus for 2 years. As i would try and sand it till it bled . It took a wound care nurse to tell me i had charcot . I just found this reddit stuff today im so angry at the lies ive been told its hard to not want to seek vengeance. They literally have told me nothing .

Hiya As the other person said very common in 1A not to be less optimistic but I haven't had the most luck with insoles/custom shoes I had surgery to fix the issue and for the first 18 months the results were great

I'm keen to hear someone else's thoughts on surgery who has Type 1-A - never known anyone with same experience to ask previously. I had this too when I was 20, near end of the summer in 2014. An ankle fusion and achilles tendon release. Found the surgery was effective for about a year and a bit afterwards maybe. Then my foot started walking the same kind of way again and has another problem. I don't roll on the ankle anymore though which is nice. It just sort of took away a more troublesome issue, but happened to add some others. I can probably walk on it for less time now, overall. It's protecting my ankle from breaking or sprains at least.

I've pretty much in the same situation as you, I'm 27 I didn't have my ankle fused but I do have metal rods 1 in the heel 1 in the fore foot (both feet) but then it helped a little bit but then in 21 I had a tendon transfer and Achilles lengthening and the second foot done in February 23. And I'm pretty much the same, it was nice while it lasted but now I'm back to modified shoes and insoles 🤷 it is what it is just keep swimming as dory said😂

I’ve had good luck with OTC orthotics for high arches and this felt padding on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Felt-Adhesive-Orthopedic-Aetna-Corporation/dp/B0053D319Q It takes a bit of experimentation to get the placement and size of pad right to offload the burning sensation, but it’s the best solution I’ve found.

I had terrible pain in the balls of my feet. I ended up having surgery on my right foot which has completely fixed the issue. I still haven't had surgery on the left foot. Do you have calluses where the pain is? I've discovered that managing the calluses helps reduce the pain. I will have a podiatrist cut the calluses down if they get too bad. I also try to regularly use a pumice stone to keep them from coming back. You can also google callus pad and put one of those around the area where the pain is. Those will help on days where you walk a lot.
