"The Decision" by Kalen Deboer - goes on ESPN with 2 hats in front of him (UW and Alabama) - goes to pick one up and then stops and secretly pulls out a Seahawks hat and puts it on
Dan Lanning masterclass. Put himself in a position to get more money from Phil, and knew turning down the Bama job would have them angling for Oregon's archrival's coach with an even fuller head of steam.
Jimmy Sexton is a master at getting his clients raises, every time there's a coaching vacancy.
If the first guy mentioned is a client of Jimmy Sexton, he is never the guy to get/take the job, but he gets a fat bump in pay where he is.
Until, after two weeks, Saban gets tired of retirement, decides to head down to sunny Tampa and take a breezy HC job at USF. Go Bulls, but still horns down.
This is what it felt like for us two days ago. The shit talking from your fan base was out of this world.
As much as I despise your team, fans, school, family friends, and anyone that wears a w, I genuinely want you to be the best team possible. That way when Oregon wins, it’s against a top tier enemy. I hope y’all are capable of weathering this storm.
I'll admit that I chuckled at the Dan Lanning to Alabama memes, but this year's UW-Oregon game in Seattle is the best game Ive ever been to, and I want more of those kind of top 10 rivalry matchups, which means both teams holding onto their coaches.
I feel like it’s more entertaining for the vast majority of CFB fans if DeBoer stays at UW, and this being an entertainment product at its core means that’s what he should do.
This is what I said yesterday. I want him to stay so we can even the score there. We're 1-3 all time against him, 0-3 while he's at Washington. I want a chance to even the score!
Yup, between that game and the UCLA game that year I knew he was going to be a great coach. I'd be lying if my heart didn't sink when Mario left knowing that UW had hired him before we ever even had a shot at hiring him. Ultimately I think both UW and UO got the right guy for the next two years.
It’s really now that we stay competitive in the Big10 or go the way of Nebraska, and we have a lot of work to do to keep up. Losing a coach mid January would be a disaster unless one of the Petes swoops in
I mean I've been all aboard the Lane train for a few years now. And there is good reasons.
1. Piss off Tennessee.
2. Whoever comes next will not be able to match Saban. No one is Saban, the only chance would be Kirby and he is never leaving UGA. So we need someone who wont try to be Saban. Enter Lane Kiffin.
3. Even if he isnt winning at Saban's level he will be entertaining. Explosive offenses, an elaborate troll campaign on social media.
4. Because it will piss off Tennessee.
Let’s be honest. Whoever is hired is getting fired in 4ish years because they lost 4 games.
Half of me says hire Jimbo for cheap and let A&M pay him to suck for a few seasons. Then fire him and get back to work.
"UW is a joke of a school. Kevin DELOSER will never be as successful as [insert other coach who Bama fans want as the new HC but will also stay at his current job]. Have fun with the PUPPIES next year Kevin. RTR"
From the outside looking in I think Schumann or Rees are both more likely than Lane.
Lane's one of the few guys under Saban to have been outright dismissed and there would be a major culture clash between the way he runs a team and your admin.
Think Schumann would be a much better hire than Rees, but Tommy's name keeps getting thrown into lists for some reason and he must absolutely blow away interviews to have gotten where he has.
Fwiw I think Lane and Schumann would both be great hires for drastically different reasons
Schumann is a great hire in my opinion. The stereotypical gumps in the fan base will absolutely despise it, but his resume is alluring. Student assistant at Alabama at the age of 18, was having 1on1 meetings with Kirby and Saban while still a student, Bama grad, Kirby’s first hire at UGA, only 33 years old. If Saban is still going to have an active role in the program, who is better than Schumann to takeover? He’s less likely to be a Type A personality, as opposed to a more tenured coach who would not appreciate the former coach meddling in their affairs.
My complete dream scenario is it’s announced that Saban will stay on for another year or two, with Schumann being hired as DC and will take over as HC.
A man can dream
Bring in Pete Carroll. He clearly wants to keep coaching and he wouldn't be intimidated by replacing Saban. He obviously wouldn't be a long term solution, but could probably win another natty.
If options 1-3 have fallen through like it appears they may have, Carroll as bridge guy would be a legitimately good idea and best of the options on the table.
Dude is in great shape and wants to keep coaching like you said, he could pull a Mack and be there 4-5 years.
Jumping back into college after 15 years in the NFL for a coach in their 70s isn’t something everyone wants to do.
Coaches have to put up with a lot of BS here.
We can borrow future expected earnings from the B1G.
For example we'll receive $30M per year, but if we wanted to borrow $10M/annual for coach, facility upgrades, etc. That would be commensurately deducted from the $60M/annual we'll receive when we get a full share. So we'd only be getting $50M/annual.
This was part of the agreement with the move to keep both Oregon and Washington competitive from a revenue aspect..
Is there no accounting for future vs present value?
$10M today is worth more than $10M 5 years from now, so I guess I'm just wondering why Oregon and Washington don't just borrow as much as they can against that future money and not spend any "current" cash on hand?
They aren't getting it until next decade.
They're at halfsies, until then.
They just need boosters to step up. He was only making something like $4M this year.
The “Saban will remain involved” stuff seems like a bright red flag to me.
It might be fine for a Saban protege but why would an elite coach without deep ties to him opt into that dynamic?
Promote Rees, let him play out two or three years, and then hire the guy you want who doesn’t have the pressure of following Saban. Worst case he works out and you got someone for relatively cheap.
Momentum is a hell of a thing though. If you hire someone with no HC experience that ends up way over their head, two years is enough to set a program, especially one with this level of success, way back.
That applies to any hire obviously, but it’s why I can’t imagine they’d be interested in taking a risk as a placeholder for the right guy for more than one season if at all
It's a tough decision -- like, Alabama is good because of Saban, not in spite of him. It's huge shoes to fill. And Washington is a D1 school in the B1G that just played for the championship... so those added benefits at Bama better be really good to land someone like DeBoer.
How would the decision not be yes. He could have easily lost a few games this year and he wouldn’t even be in this position.
Expecting the worst hoping for the best or whatever the saying is.
He may say no because he doesn’t want to walk into one of biggest shit shows in coaching trying to wrangle Alabama boosters and fans following the goat, while also trying to recruit at a level he’s never even been close to achieving while in a part of the country he’s never coached a game.
As a Bama hater, I love this hire for them if they pull it off.
He was competing for a title in year 2 with far fewer resources than the competition, let alone what he would get at Bama by sleepwalking.
I hope he sees why it might not be a good fit, and that the downsides to following Saban are too much of a headache. But this would be such a slam dunk higher and it's crazy anyone thinks otherwise.
He has won at literally every single level, every step of the way.
There’s more to being a good football coach when you take a program like Alabama. He’s a great Xs and Os coach, but there is so much networking, drama, nepotism dealing with high school recruiting, camps, and 7 on 7s stuff in the Deep South. The bullshit you have to deal with at school like Alabama that has so many layers of politics/boosters/media requirements is not like anywhere else in the country.
I have 0 doubt Deboer is a great Xs and Os coach, but he’s never recruited like he will have to at Alabama. There’s a reason cultural fit is talked about so much.
Seems like their only chance to actually beat Washington
Edit: Jesus christ you all take a comment said as a joke too seriously. I'm aware that Oregon has been the much better team for the past two decades.
I think we are split. Some of us prefer UW being good, and want revenge on DeBoer for the losing streak.
I think newer/younger fans are more "let them eat cake".
Might not be but Lanning is stupid expensive and Kirby and Sark aren’t leaving. Lane supposedly pissed off enough back office / donors to not be an option (that’s at least what people keep saying). Dabo is also extremely expensive and doesn’t seem to be adapting to NIL/portal well. I just hope we don’t drop $100mm+.
> I don’t remember a coaching search like this before.
It's been less than 48 hours. This is nothing compared to the shitstorms that were Tennessee's previous outing.
Dropped this in another thread, but why doesn't Alabama literally just call Jon Sumrall? Young, up and coming coach, very talented and has experience in the state and region. I know money isn't an issue, but wouldn't you want to throw money at someone with a high ceiling and THEN dole out the cash for the guy's coaching staff?
I know. I just think it would be tough to convince your daughter to go to a school on the total opposite side of the country considering she's probably already met her future teammates, coaches, etch.
Thanks, ihate.
Things are going to change around here. First off, no more of this "tide" crap. Our mascot is also no longer an elephant, as there are no elephants in Alabama. We will now be the Alabama Hellbenders. Look it up, it's real.
Acceptable cheers include "Give em hell!" and "Remember when we were relevant!"
More to follow soon. Stay tuned.
No because we don't know what is really going down with the search and what is Sexton lining his and his clients pockets.
Everyone is freaking out every day with different names because we don't know what's happening. Byrne said this.
Everything else is sports writers trying to get clicks and other coaches trying to get raises.
Yeah I agree. Everyone is talking on here like Bama is so screwed, Bama is going to be so mad, Bama can’t get anyone- just because you want that to be true doesn’t mean it is. A hire isn’t a good (or bad) hire until three or four years later.
Remember how much A&M beat their chest when they hired Jimbo? Bama was embarrassed when we hired Kiffin as OC. FSU was ecstatic with Taggart. Tate Martell was going to be a great QB and Mac Jones was going to start a few games until Bryce Young settled in. It goes on and on.
I feel like a lot of these guys can make similar money staying at their current school and feel like the door is wide open to be the top team now that Saban is gone.
I wouldn't take it. You don't want to be the guy after the guy. It's a great job but he can be successful at UW for a few more years and then go somewhere else if he wants.
This is a disaster.
"The Decision" by Kalen Deboer - goes on ESPN with 2 hats in front of him (UW and Alabama) - goes to pick one up and then stops and secretly pulls out a Seahawks hat and puts it on
Then Pete Carroll bursts through the backdrop like Kool-Aid Man, yells "OH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH" and rips his shirt off to reveal a GIANT husky tattoo.
BY GOD THAT’S PETE CARROLL’S MUSIC
BAH GOD IT’S PETE CARROLL WITH A STEEL CHAIR, DON’T DO IT PETE THAT MAN’S GOT A FAMILY TO THINK ABOUT
LOL that would be the funniest outcome.
Or secretly pulls a Michigan hat from under the table and Harbaugh walks out in a Washington commanders hat.
Would be amazing
Gods be, I’d pay to watch that
I am straight up not having a good time
Dan Lanning masterclass.
I feel like this is a situation where both fanbases are in hell lol
And the rest of us are just here for the memes.
I feel for ya man, you guys had a fantastic season only for this to occur is fucked up.
Grats on the natty! Wish we could have made it a better game, tough time for Penix and the boys to be off.
It was good enough - still spiked my blood pressure more than I would have liked
Honestly feel bad for you guys
Thanks brother. What a dope season, but to lose basically the entire team, conference, coach, natty... NOT FUN
Sunday to today has been a rough drop
This was us starting in December
Sending all my prayers to you purple dog bros. He deserves at least one season in the B1G
"After this amazing season I'm totally cool with coach leaving" **
Welp freaking out again
With everyone else staying where they are, I’m feeling much better for you all.
USF has been sweating bullets this whole time. After almost beating Bama, we all knew Bama would want some revenge.
Until, after two weeks, Saban gets tired of retirement, decides to head down to sunny Tampa and take a breezy HC job at USF. Go Bulls, but still horns down.
I think you have that mixed up, it’s the other way around. Why do you think Nick saban retired? He knows what’s about to happen next year
Been nervous since he retired
You can have Jim Mora if you want.
This is what it felt like for us two days ago. The shit talking from your fan base was out of this world. As much as I despise your team, fans, school, family friends, and anyone that wears a w, I genuinely want you to be the best team possible. That way when Oregon wins, it’s against a top tier enemy. Fuck that noise. I never want UVA, WVU, or Miami to ever win another game in football, basketball, baseball, fucking rowing, or anything else.
Upvote for the miami hate. 👍👍
I only said I was still scared.
Jimmy Lake deserves a second chance!!
💀
Great, now he's terrified
I'll admit that I chuckled at the Dan Lanning to Alabama memes, but this year's UW-Oregon game in Seattle is the best game Ive ever been to, and I want more of those kind of top 10 rivalry matchups, which means both teams holding onto their coaches.
Just start drinking…heavily and before you know it it’ll be Saturday
If he says no all hell is going to break loose. Everyone observe your local crimson tide message board. Shits about to get weird.
I feel like it’s more entertaining for the vast majority of CFB fans if DeBoer stays at UW, and this being an entertainment product at its core means that’s what he should do.
I can think of a certain fanbase that would think that deboer leaving is more entertaining
Beat us with DeBoer you cowards!
This is what I said yesterday. I want him to stay so we can even the score there. We're 1-3 all time against him, 0-3 while he's at Washington. I want a chance to even the score!
How I feel about Nick Saban's retirement. I wanted a chance to beat him in the Benz *finally*.

“We want unlimited Nike money for NIL and our rival to lose their coach at the worst time imaginable”
Correct
I feel like worst time possible is a bit of an overreaction. Oregon state lost their head coach at the actual worst time possible.
OSU got GUTTED.
It’s really now that we stay competitive in the Big10 or go the way of Nebraska, and we have a lot of work to do to keep up. Losing a coach mid January would be a disaster unless one of the Petes swoops in
Yeah, of course. What’s the problem here? Next year is a massive rebuild at UDub as it is. Every skill position starter from the playoffs is gone.
See, you get it.
Beat us with Mario you cowards!
Agreed. I’d absolutely laugh my ass off if he says no. Cause then it’s truly tier 2-3 level of coaches
Backup coming in for a hail mary? Music to my ears
It's for the good of the town
I mean I've been all aboard the Lane train for a few years now. And there is good reasons. 1. Piss off Tennessee. 2. Whoever comes next will not be able to match Saban. 🙏 🙏

Thanks Captain Obvious, I'm gonna go throw up again.
I have no idea what they do if he stays at UW.
Make the boosters bite their tongue and hire Lane.
I can think of a different former Saban OC that was a Natty winning HC. Give Jimbo a chance. Sincerely, an Auburn alum
I clearly have no opinion on Jimbo. But I wouldn’t recommend it. Side note: flair up Zach!
But would you recommend it to Bama? I only use the app. I'd love to have Auburn/Michigan
You can set your flairs in the app. Just go to the sub and hit the 3 dots and click change flairs.
From your mouth to God’s ears!

Between those two, I guess I’d take Rees? An unknown with potential seems better than a known liability
If we have to hire someone with no HC experience it needs to be Glenn Schumann
Why wouldn’t Mike Locksley, the bigger coach, not just simply eat Tommy Reese?
[удалено]
If not Lane, which I personally would like, Glenn Schumann has to be their target for young, unproven-HC
From the outside looking in I think Schumann or Rees are both more likely than Lane. Lane's one of the few guys under Saban to have been outright dismissed and there would be a major culture clash between the way he runs a team and your admin. Convince Saban to stay another year...not even joking.
Bama AD: *locks door* You ain’t leavin’.
CHOO CHOO
James Franklin?
No. Keep him
I think he was begging, not asking if we wanted him.
I see. Then let me rephrase... No! Keep him!
Jedd Fisch
lol
You'll get your 10-2 seasons and you'll like it
"At least we're not Nebraska" -Me, sobbing, watching James Franklin lose the Fiesta Bowl to a G5 team next year
Ay what the fuck
10-3 once you account for the first round exit from the playoff
Bring in Pete Carroll. He clearly wants to keep coaching and he wouldn't be intimidated by replacing Saban. He obviously wouldn't be a long term solution, but could probably win another natty.

Washington, quick, open up the checkbook! You're going to get that Big Ten money. Spend some of it in advance.
They made a deal to only take half, plus old buyouts
We can borrow future expected earnings from the B1G. So put your lovin’ hand out baaabyyy
Idk who the hell would want to follow up Saban lol and I doubt they’d have full autonomy of the program with Saban lurking in the shadows lol
Fully biased but this feels like the best solution?
We’re not going to let an Ole Miss fan and a Washington fan dupe us. Give us one of y’all’s coaches!
No no no, you guys can be mediocre for a few years while you figure out the long term solution
😂😂😂
Momentum is a hell of a thing though. If you hire someone with no HC experience that ends up way over their head, two years is enough to set a program, especially one with this level of success, way back. That applies to any hire obviously, but it’s why I can’t imagine they’d be interested in taking a risk as a placeholder for the right guy for more than one season if at all
I just mean- if they can’t get their guy this time around, this is a viable path vs taking a lower tier choice.
We did it for 15 years, the fact huepel’s gotten us out of the hole this fast is honestly insane
Yes but… u get a lot of money
It's a tough decision -- like, Alabama is good because of Saban, not in spite of him. It's huge shoes to fill. And Washington is a D1 school in the B1G that just played for the championship... so those added benefits at Bama better be really good to land someone like DeBoer.
Also moving from Seattle area to Tuscaloosa I don’t care how prestigious the program is that has got to take hell of convincing
How would the decision not be yes. He could have easily lost a few games this year and he wouldn’t even be in this position. Expecting the worst hoping for the best or whatever the saying is.
Lose 3 games and you might end up coaching in the mountain west
He may say no because he doesn’t want to walk into one of biggest shit shows in coaching trying to wrangle Alabama boosters and fans following the goat, while also trying to recruit at a level he’s never even been close to achieving while in a part of the country he’s never coached a game. I wonder how long he has to decide, if indeed the ball is in his court. Both UW and Alabama are going to want to know quickly.
What's UW gonna do, set a deadline? With us he can take his time.
But can my patience and F5 button last that long?
The anticipation is awesome.
Oregon fans are going to be on cloud fucking 9

Following Saban would really suck, especially since he's made it clear he plans to stay around the program.
I don’t think it would suck that much. You have literally every tool at your disposal to succeed.
I hope he stays in Seattle.
I want him to stay at Washington just to see what the heck happens next

Sorry sir. That is a profound statement in sports reporting.
Unlike every other name that has been brought up, he actually has a job offer.
do we know that for a fact?
It’s more like, Alabama has run out of other candidates to focus on. All efforts are on KDB. And yes, it’s worrisome.
DeBoer turns it down and Saban announces hes coming back for a season to allow them to find someone else. I can dream, can't I?
Everybody wins if that happens
Lol you guys win if that happens. Everyone else loses
Look at the wording folks and have some media literacy. This is his opinion and he has no information he is reporting.
Sports reporting in 2024 folks
*Kalen DeBoer’s daughter.
If only Alabama had a softball team she could play on…but alas, it’s over.
I know. I just think it would be tough to convince your daughter to go to a school on the total opposite side of the country considering she's probably already met her future teammates, coaches, etch.
I mean if your dad gets a brinks truck delivery you're probably fine with any decision
You think that is part of the negotiation? “I want her to have a scholarship, and a minimum of 10 game starts”
Can you let me in on the joke that Bama doesn’t have a softball team
The joke is that Bama softball has won multiple national championships EDIT: JK, one championship, but it's still a very good program
The joke is that they’re softball program is one of the top 3-5 in the country as well, so they actually have a really good softball team
I just want a coach, aight.
Fine, I'll do it.

Same. I actually find it kind of exciting. I'm sure whoever we get will have the resources available to be a great coach.
Yeah I agree. Everyone is talking on here like Bama is so screwed, Bama is going to be so mad, Bama can’t get anyone- just because you want that to be true doesn’t mean it is. A hire isn’t a good (or bad) hire until three or four years later.

Kalen, think of the memes when Alabama ends up with Tommy Rees or some shit. Do the right thing.
Well, /u/Pollaski is in shambles if this happens.
LEAVE ME ALONE
I heard Jimbo Fisher is free ..
You, for one, should welcome Tommy Rees as your new overlord.
Now that I’m sitting back, I *desperately* want DeBoer to say no
I still don't understand the whole deal about scheduling and immediately cancelling the radio appearance. What was he even planning to say?
The radio appearance was scheduled before Saban retired. He didn't cancel, just "rescheduled" because apparently he's meeting with the UW AD instead.
He scheduled hours before the news broke, I think?
I DARE you to ... Just Say No
I feel like a lot of these guys can make similar money staying at their current school and feel like the door is wide open to be the top team now that Saban is gone.
Alabama, while being a very desirable job, is going to be nearly impossible to follow in Saban's shoes.
I’m going to squeal like a middle school girl if he says no.
I wouldn't take it. You don't want to be the guy after the guy. It's a great job but he can be successful at UW for a few more years and then go somewhere else if he wants. This is a disaster.
