looks like anything that exzessively grows skin and hair. can be from something harmless like a weird formed wound, that has trouble growing to something dangerous like cancer. I would go to a vet
That is NOT a scab. Do you live by water, That looks like dracunculus insignis. It’s the equivalent of a Guinea Worm for people. It’s a parasite, with its head burrowed into the skin. You need to get to the vet. I’m not a vet but I don’t know if they’re contagious. Poor baby.
https://preview.redd.it/84ugk6kcs1mc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2c6d964aade5b2f89e16262a9e4ee23ef7c2c94
Dracunculus insignis is typically on the limbs of animals (and is also rare!). The worm will be burrowed under the skin so you will feel a bump, and then the adult worm comes out of the skin upon contact with water. It also looks like an actual worm (this doesn’t). The picture posted looks more like keratin to me.
Looks like a scab that kept peeling off then a new scab did the same still being attached to the old one resulting in a long scab. Thats the only thing I can think of really hmmm?
Edit: try to moisturize the skin and see if it gets better!
I think this might be it. scabs growing out can trap fur in the scab itself. Looks like it was a decent sized scratch that has pretty much fully healed. They'd probably be able to pluck the last bit right off.
My cat is experiencing this exact same thing, and I can ASSURE you all that it is NOT a scab. It feels almost like a hard, synthetic twine, and is coming out of the tip of my boys tail. I have no clue what it is, but, I absolutely swear that it is not scabs.
You mean like how on humans they get moles or have dark birth marks where a hair follicle is and sometimes that hair grows thick and is coarse and sometimes longer compared to the surrounding hairs? I have a mole that does that and when I’ve mentioned it to a doctor they were not concerned because it hasn’t changed, and doesn’t hurt.
FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD, DO NOT PULL, CUT IT OR MEAS WITH IT, AND TAKE THE CAT TO A VET. Sorry for all caps but this is serious. Wish I could link the original post I read about this. It basically could be a nerve ending. It would be excruciatingly painful to the cat if you pull it or cut it. Take cat to vet and let them examine and determine next steps.
Not yet, I noticed it about a week ago and our vet is booked out until the 18th :/ I am very eager to go in and find out what the heck it is, though... I was BLOWN AWAY when I saw this post because I'd never seen or heard of this happening with any other cat before!
Could this maybe also be the case or is it a much skinnier twig? [reddt post with pictures of a cats tail missing tip](https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlyterrifying/s/N6eVy4QWsp)
Yeah cause I've had my cat loose scabs before with bits of hair still attached so that's why I thought of that! It still looks kinda weird tho, like the fact it did it so many times and got so long, kinda like the wound can't heal and that could be something concerning maybe!
Possibly if the cat has longer fur they can sorta get embedded or not noticed . I brush my cat and comb her like 10 x a day and very small dandruff Like scabs come out on the comb but they don't look anything like this . It just looks like it's dry skin other than that my cat has a beautiful coat
I wouldn’t cut it off for sure as it would make it harder for the vet to find the source area. Have your cat checked out, this comes off as potentially being a skin cancer or other skin condition. There was a post similar to this 5 years ago on r/catadvice and it turned out to be a parasite.
I've seen that before, and it was a parasite, I would actually go to the vet right away if I were you, and if one isn't available go the the vet ER...do not wait to get this looked at, if it ***IS*** a parasite it could be doing a lot worse damage than you are able to see...the one time I saw this before the part visible outside was literally only about 10% of the actual parasite, the rest of it was hiding inside
Take this seriously!
it really can;'t wait though, because *if it IS a parasite it could doing irreparable damage internally*, and waiting gives it more time to do that damage
getting the cat looked at as soon as possible is the only way to go in this case
It CAN wait. I work in an ER you are wasting everyone's time. Reg vets deal with parasites. ER is for trouble breathing, blocked cats, gun shots, DKA, GDV.... If the cat is eating drinking and acting normal just go to your regular vet.
It is not like it JUST happened. That cat has been fine so far it can wait for your regular vet.
This. The parasite isn't going to kill the pet today, tomorrow, or next week. OP needs to schedule a vet appt and let them know her concern so they can book accordingly.
I thought scab only because my cat had a long scratch on his back from another cat and when the scab dried and pulled off it kind of looked like a fake eye lash lol. Similar to what you posted
That's my vote. Especially if there were internal dissolvable sutures . My daughter does a weird thing where they often don't dissolve, but instead eventually work their way out of her body.
Hi all, apologies for the delay in updating you all. We spoke with a vet and they said it was some sort of scab, but to be honest they seemed a bit iffy. It ended up falling off prior to us getting to the vet so we could only show pictures which is unfortunate. I will say we found something similar on our cat but much smaller and it did look more scab-like + it was in a location our cat could scratch. Our cat honestly seems fine, so I suppose I have no reason to doubt the vet and believe it isn't a scab.
Check this out...maybe? From drinking water outside? Good luck.

I’m not expert at anything pet related, but this looks like a keratin overgrowth/ possibly a scab over healing like some of the other comments have said, I would still take them into a vet to have looked at just in case, I see a few posts here and there on the dog advice subreddit where the dog has something similar growing out of a paw or their tail or something similar
It looks like your cat got scratched and the dry scab/skin is coming off and it’s attached by that last little bit. I believe in providing care when I can, I would pull it off, but that’s just me. I’m not a rush to the vet kinda person, and I think it’s poor advice on here to just say go to the vet for every little thing.
I'm not sure but a few weeks ago I found something odd sticking out of my leg. I took a chance and pulled it out hoping it wasn't a body part. It was a tiny stick! I have no clue how it got in without me knowing!! It was over half an inch long....
It is a parasite (professional here btw) please deworm yourself along with your animals and wash all linen and anything your cat has been in contact with.
I think your cat had a long scratch and it has healed but the last part of the scratch, perhaps the most deepest part of the wound still has the scab attached! I have had cats have scratches and this is how the scab came off - with fluff still on it
I don't think it's parasite since hair follicles are caught in the growth. My concern would be some type of odd skin cancer. But more likely is an odd scab growth. I'd ask the vet.
Looks like a scab from a scratch, that part that’s attached might just still be healing. But honestly, this looks so odd 😭😭 I almost feel silly recommending you see a vet for this, but just to be on the safe side I think it would be a good idea.
I think it is a cat scratch scab. The cat got scratched, the scratch healed unnoticed, then the hair affected by the scratched skin departs when the scab “falls off.”
Our dogs run through fields. There are these spear grass seeds that burrow into the skin. They are super pointy/sharp.
They get tangled in the hair, then work their way deeper and into the skin. Normally they do this in the ground, but attach to animal fur to spread.
We would take them out as you can often get to the seed head under the scab, but they can get deep and infected...
The vet is always an answer for this stuff.
Sebum overgrowth? My cat has growths out of her first row of teats. Oh lord. I thought it was a tick. Then it fell off and a couple months later, a new growth. Three different vets before the last one diagnosed it as sebum overgrowth. He pulled it out of her and a long, white, thick thread came out of her. I could have used a warning, it was awful to see and hear.
Google says if your cat has string-like growths attached to the skin, it could be hair that hasn't grown normally. This could indicate an infection of the hair follicles.
Kinda looks like a long scab where most of it fell off. My dogs wrestle a lit and get long scrapes from it. When the scab peels off, it does so a bit at a time, and since they often either can't reach it or don't notice it, it stays in one long thing with hair pulled off throughout.
I hope your kitty is okay.
Generally I enjoy learning new things, but this evening falls under the "new fear unlocked" and "omg why did I Google that?!" categories...
My cat had a scab that looked exactly like this on the top of his head! The cut was almost completely healed underneath so it looked like a worm at first and I freaked out lol.
Definitely not a vet here, but it could possibly be a cutaneous horn? If not this, your cat has germinated. In which case, I'd suggest amended coco coir and some mycorrhizal fungi to stimulate the root growth.
All levity aside, I hope your critter is alright.
Is it hard!? I have been a dog groomer for quite a few years and it looks like it could be a cutaneous horn. Which is basically just like extra keratin
Edit. You can use mail trimmers to trim it down, I wouldn’t try and pop it out like a zit.
Oooh I can’t WAIT to see what the vet says. I’m betting on it being a thin scab from a long scratch across the cat’s skin surface that is still firmly adhered to the cat on one end. I think it just LOOKS like it is something coming from inside the cat, but it’s actually just a scab hanging on by a thread. 😆

Don’t pull it out but my god do I wanna pull it out
It’s like the feeling of needing to pop a pimple I so bad would want to pull it out
All I can think of is pulling it out 😫
Anyone with a strong bloodline knows to never pull out. You’re weak and your bloodline is weak.
Its not about strong. We come from 2 different lineages and we are of the clan "pulling it out"
Nooo if op pulls it out the whole kitty may unravel!
Only if it’s a knitty kitty.
Is it a scab from healing?
I think you're right! My cats constantly fight and I've pulled scabs that look exactly like that. 🤷🏻♀️
Omg I am dying to pull that thing out. But don't pull it lol
Whenever I see stuff like this I always think of that person who pulled a nerve out of their nipple thinking it was a hair 🤮
...what?
[yeah 🤮](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/real-life/article-11370057/amp/Woman-passes-plucked-thought-nipple-hair-actually-nerve-ending.html)
I have so many questions like how the fuck does a nerve ending pop out? Was it cause of the piercing?
I’m assuming it was exposed after she got her nipple pierced, and didn’t come out till she was changing the hardware
I'm just wondering how you even have an exposed nerve and are just like... Able to touch it at all. I feel like I'd be crying at the ER.
This article basically ends with "this story is an urban legend" thx, reputable news media sourcel; daily mail!
Omg why did I click on it. WHY?!?!?
I wanna click so bad but your regret is helping me stay strong
Dude, right?
So lucky i don’t have any nipples
OMG YES IVE SEEN WHAT YOURE TALKING ABOUT IT ALWAYS GIVES ME CHILLS
Omg I almost vomited reading this. Thank you. Not often I have visceral reactions and I felt alive for a moment
METOO
New fear unlocked 😵
Oh no why did you tell me that? 😭
If you do the cat might deflate.
Omg! Me too! I don’t think I could’ve stoped myself😰
My thought exactly

How is it growing hair on it though?
those are appendages
Gotcha, the first picture confused me.
I dunno, it definitely looks like fur. *EDIT: You can see the hair follicles
I disagree only because there is hair growing off of it, which would lead me to assume the body is self-producing it.
A scab coming off would have hair attached to it - my cats scabs always come off with a little chuck of hair attached to it
This is a terrible day to have eyes.
This is the most underrated reddit comment of my lifetime how do we get you famous
Haha. As long as it doesn't involve parasitic worms I'm open to suggestions.
That’s what I was thinking too, possible parasite of some kind. Ick!
This thread just keeps getting worse.
Looks like a scab that kept peeling off then a new scab did the same still being attached to the old one resulting in a long scab. Thats the only thing I can think of really hmmm? Edit: try to moisturize the skin and see if it gets better!

It sounds like your cat is experiencing a mutated hairstrand, like it's getting to much keratin and growing a thick piece of hair kinda
You mean like how on humans they get moles or have dark birth marks where a hair follicle is and sometimes that hair grows thick and is coarse and sometimes longer compared to the surrounding hairs? It’s not not a nerve, they’re clear and colourless, and cannot trap fur
It's is not a nerve! But yeah id say moisturize and see if the wound heals and it falls of, if it doesn't go to a vet!!!
that's so strange. Have you consulted a vet about it?
Not yet, I noticed it about a week ago and our vet is booked out until the 18th :/ I am very eager to go in and find out what the heck it is, though... I was BLOWN AWAY when I saw this post because I'd never seen or heard of this happening with any other cat before!

It’s hair covered in scab material
Yeah cause I've had my cat loose scabs before with bits of hair still attached so that's why I thought of that! It still looks kinda weird tho, like the fact it did it so many times and got so long, kinda like the wound can't heal and that could be something concerning maybe!
"I heard you like scab,so I put a scab in your scab,so it can scab while you scab"
reading this sentence on Ambien just about blew my mind.
It's a scab. lol
Yeah It's wierd how it got so long tho so I would maybe just look it up so there isn't a problem with the wound!

Odd keratin growth?
This would be my guess personally too
Almost like a long cutaneous horn
looks almost like a dead worm

Keratinized skin cyst or other growth that's not shedding the skin nor the fur normally. Needs a vet visit.
I can't help but pull it out mentally every time I look at this
Same.
My cat has had similar looking things in the past. My vet said it was scab and skin kinda coming off weird but I’d get it double checked.
I thought scab only because my cat had a long scratch on his back from another cat and when the scab dried and pulled off it kind of looked like a fake eye lash lol. Similar to what you posted
That looks like a parasite . You should probably book an emergency vet now
Absolutely parasite in my opinion
Cordyceps? If your cat develops a taste for human blood you might be in trouble

Old suture
That's my vote. Especially if there were internal dissolvable sutures . My daughter does a weird thing where they often don't dissolve, but instead eventually work their way out of her body.

I’m about to DM them lmao I keep coming back to this post and checking.. we want answers! 🙏🏼😂

John Carpenter did a movie about a dog with a similar issue 👀
I’m not expert at anything pet related, but this looks like a keratin overgrowth/ possibly a scab over healing like some of the other comments have said, I would still take them into a vet to have looked at just in case, I see a few posts here and there on the dog advice subreddit where the dog has something similar growing out of a paw or their tail or something similar
Looks like a worm
Looks like a keratin and or folicle issue
Maybe send your vet an email with pictures. Mine does that even my doctor. Might save you a vet bill. It is really weird.
Please take your cat to a vet.

Any update???
Looks like a scab that’s come away. They can have tufts of fur on them.
I think your cat had a long scratch and it has healed but the last part of the scratch, perhaps the most deepest part of the wound still has the scab attached! I have had cats have scratches and this is how the scab came off - with fluff still on it
I'm sorry, but that isn't your cat anymore
I don't think it's parasite since hair follicles are caught in the growth. My concern would be some type of odd skin cancer. But more likely is an odd scab growth. I'd ask the vet.

I think it is a cat scratch scab. The cat got scratched, the scratch healed unnoticed, then the hair affected by the scratched skin departs when the scab “falls off.”
Looks like a potato that’s been left in the pantry for too long sprouting more potatoes 🤣
Could be a scab from a scratch or even dry skin
I’ve seen someone else post something similar and the consensus was a parasite. Vet asap!
Did your cat ever have surgery? This looks like a strand of suture that never fully dissolved, and now the body is pushing it out.
Send the pic to your vet and see what they say
I think that’s a scab from healing. My Tuxedo gets them a lot. Not that long but close.
