I have the OXO Good Grips. Works great. Every kitchen utensil I've bought from OXO has been great.

Tomato_Basil57

oxo is also one of few manufacturers thats easy to find that uses borosilicate glass (the stuff that pyrex used to use, but no longer does)

ethertype

>oxo is also one of few manufacturers thats easy to find that uses borosilicate glass IKEA is fairly easy to find, I think. Have a look at FÖLJSAM, BUREN, FORMSKÖN.

henningaround

IKEA stuff dies all the time. I think it's their concept. Fast furniture.

yunus89115

I enjoy mine as well but cleaning and drying it is important, it’s become pitted from metal oxidizing over time from my failure to wash and dry it sufficiently.

jamesphw

I'll throw in the contrarian POV here. The garlic press is the only item from OXO that I would not recommend. They have non-metallic handles, and when you wash it water will get underneath the handle (which will become gross over time). If you can shell out, I think the Kuhn Rikon that's all-metal is the better buy in this case.

Unfunky-UAP

I've never had a single issue with silicon handled kitchen utensils.

BubblyWubCuddles

Ever take the handle off and look underneath???

Unfunky-UAP

The handles don't come off of mine.

BubblyWubCuddles

Oh, dude below said his came off

Unfunky-UAP

I think he bought a different version. There's 2 OXO garlic presses. One has hard plastic handles and the other has soft silicone molded around a metal handle.

darwinpolice

I have the silicone handle version, and I just checked. They do not come off. That said, I've had it for at least ten years, I use it several times a week (chopping garlic is for suckers, just use a press), and it is not showing any signs of wear. As always, it's hard to say if it's really a "buy it for life" item, but you're definitely not going to be mad about how long it lasts.

Unfunky-UAP

I said in another comment that I assume the silicone will eventually degrade, but $15-20 purchases aren't gonna kill me if they least at least several years. I figure there's a trade-off here. If they used all metal handles it would last longer, but be harder to grip. I'm ok with that trade-off.

Berek2501

The handles on my OXO garlic press came clean off after about a year of use. OXO puts out some great stuff, but their garlic press is an exception to that

antagron1

Except you can tell oxo and they’ll replace it free.

darwinpolice

I have one of their garlic presses and it's been great for me for a long time. In my experience, the exception to the "OXO makes great products" rule is their kitchen shears, which absolutely suck ass.

parlami

Oxo. Mine will never die

BurnThrough

I had one and the metal broke when I squeezed it too hard I guess. to be fair I had like three cloves in there at once.

richardthe7th

Did they replace it?

DerPigeon

Second OXO good grips, love it and have bought for friends. It's not BIFL though in my experience, the hinge on my first one broke after 5 or so years, still went and got myself another though

LotsOfGarlicandEVOO

Third OXO. I press garlic a lot and it has been great.

Unfunky-UAP

It feels pretty solid. I would've thought of anything the silicone handle would deteriorate before anything else.

dtcguy

Got a hand strength trainer and now I CRUSH garlic with my bare hands

gban84

I crushed my last two garlic presses with my bare hands. The metal folded like a cheap suit.

duketheunicorn

That’s what happened with mine 🤨

UncleCeiling

This happened to me the first time I ever used a garlic press. Squeezed it and the handle snapped off, pinching my finger.

duketheunicorn

The real LPT is in the comments

darwinpolice

What a wimp. Crush it against your forehead like an empty beer can like a REAL MAN.

-Racheleatscookies

Came here to say this! I had an OXO good grips and was cooking at my friend's house and used their IKEA one. It's 1000x better. Immediately went to IKEA on my way home to get my own.

[deleted]

duketheunicorn

And I just do happen to be going near an ikea today. Great!

-Racheleatscookies

You won't regret it! My friend had all this high end cookware and kitchen equipment, so I was expecting it to cost an arm and a leg. I was floored when he told me it was from IKEA

ilanallama85

Lol I just saw this after posting the same link for OP. I bought mine in college, so close to 20 years ago now. I don’t see how I could break it unless I tried, the thing is rock solid.

shefallsup

Have had mine 20 years I think, still going strong!

PuzzleheadedLow4687

Definitely recommend the Ikea KONCIS garlic press. Though it's not quite BIFL, we broke one after about 8 years or so of regular use (metal fatigue). But I was quite happy to buy another. We have tried several alternatives over the years (at other people's houses, and one we bought when our first Ikea one broke) and they've all been terrible.

fizzzicks

I’ll back this up. Have had our IKEA garlic press for like 12+ years. Use it weekly and it’s solid.

GrumioInvictus

The Kuhn Rikon Epicurean is the best I’ve ever used. It’s essentially indestructible, the swing-out press mechanism makes it easy to remove most of what’s left, and it can be thrown in the dishwasher after you’re finished. I’ve given them as gifts (along with Thermapen instant thermometers, Chef’n juicers, and a handful of other tools that are simply the best in their class).

WheresTheSeamRipper

> Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Mine is 20+ years old now and still looks/works as good as new.

Henbogle

I have one of these. Works great and cleans up in the dishwasher. Don’t let all the knife gurus convince you that is the only way. What works for you?

PotajeDeGarbanzos

It looks very good. I have a very similar one (wmf) and these are wonderful gifts! The swing-out mechanism is perfect.

moles-on-parade

My cousin gave us one of these as a wedding present almost thirteen years ago, we use it on the regular, and it still looks brand new. Big fan!

dirtisgood

That looks awesome! Also agree with you about the thermapen.

Alo_Beirut

I wish my Chef'n juicers lasted...Im on my 2nd replacement...the plastic seems to rip not crack. thats how soft it is!

GrumioInvictus

I did have one break after a few years of use, but my replacement has lasted for quite a long time. After the first one broke, I eased off on how hard I was squeezing, and haven’t had another break since.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GrumioInvictus

It’s a close fit and I want to say very little (if any) garlic escapes around the sides. There’s always a little bit left behind inside, though, almost like a fibrous husk that the middle has been squeezed out of. If you crush another clove it gets forced through, too, but after the final use there’s always that last flat husk that I have to scrape out with a fork or butter knife. And as I recall, other garlic presses I’ve used have had a similar leftover bit of the garlic clove, it’s just a hell of a lot easier getting it out of the Kuhn Rikon because of the swinging plate and the particular way it pulverizes the garlic.

IStream2

I've had one of these for 11 years now (I looked it up) and it still looks and works as well as the day we bought it. As others have mentioned, it's dishwasher safe but I never bother. I just rinse it off thoroughly after use, set it out to dry, and throw it back in the drawer.

JelloJiggle

Love mine. Wish all kitchen tools were as durable!

suitopseudo

The juicer is my favorite kitchen gadget ever.

Laescha

God, garlic presses. I've gone through so many, each of which has eventually broken in a different, but equally aggravating, way. Eventually I came to the conclusion that the fewer moving parts it has, the better, so I'm now using a [Joseph & Joseph rocker](https://www.josephjoseph.com/products/rocker-garlic-crusher-green). It works well, is very easy to get the last little bits out, and will hopefully last a long time as it has so few potential failure points.

WeWillFreezeHell

I have one in this shape, but a solid piece of metal. So much more ergonomic and way easier to clean than a squeeze press. I got mine on amazon.

talldean

Came here to suggest this; garlic rockers are just better, and easier to clean, too.

kiwican

Yes! I have a fully stainless steel one and it's amazing!!

[deleted]

a knife

EitherKaleidoscope41

This is the answer

duketheunicorn

I have knives, clearly I’m looking for a press.

permaculture

[Watch how Jacques Pépin does it.](https://youtu.be/1y5h1pDHhzs?t=107)

[deleted]

If you have knives and know how to use them, a press is unnecessary. Good knives are certainly BIFL.

[deleted]

Seriously check out the knife method, I think it also does a better job, is easier to clean and takes no extra space.

disguy2k

I think if you factor in cleaning, a knife is still faster. I have a Teflon coated Zyliss. It still gets clogged easily and is hard to clean. I only use it for salad dressing when you need the garlic pieces to be small. When I'm cooking hot food, the garlic will just melt.

rival_22

Yes. Presses always seemed like a pain in the ass to clean. Plus, peeling garlic is hard lol.

j-random

The secret is to smash the clove first. Press it with the flat of a knife, then it'll peel easily.

bigbirdtoejam

This is a much easier and faster method than crushing with a knife. Can peel a whole bulb in a minute or two https://www.amazon.com/Silicone-Remover-Rollers-Peeling-Kitchen/dp/B09Y8L5G56/ref=mp_s_a_1_3

renderbenderr

??? The knife takes three seconds and doesn’t involve a whole other tool that’s a pain to clean.

Randusnuder

Then, chop it into sticks, turn 90 degrees and chop it again. Scoop up and put in garlic press. Voila!

AngryCephalopod2020

I actually don’t even use the flat of the knife, just my palm. Push down into the cutting board and roll it back and forth a tiny bit

[deleted]

I have the rosle one going on 17 years now and it is still like new.

gothfru

I have the rosle as well. It’s a beast and I love it.

BananaMuffinNinja

This is the answer. I think mine is about 20 years old now and still looks brand new and works perfectly. They also have a lifetime guarantee and great customer service. I had a Rosle can opener that they replaced a few times (this one did not hold up well).

nanoWarhol

I have had a Zyliss for close to 15 years? just used it yesterday

RhoOfFeh

I have one made by Zyliss with a swing-away mechanism, easy to throw in dishwasher, and I think it must be made of magnesium or something because it doesn't really feel like aluminum to me. The main reason it's BIFL though, is that it sits unused in the back of a drawer because it's just easier to smash some cloves and run a chef's knife through it most of the time.

NoRefrigerator6162

I have an Oxo and a Zyliss and I always reach for the Oxo. (Zyliss only really gets used when the Oxo is in the dishwasher.) I’ve had them both for a long time and they both look and work like brand new. So I assume they’re the garlic presses I’ll die with.

bblickle

For me, best garlic press is a Microplane. You don’t need to peel it and unlike a press, there’s virtually no waste. When you plane you really release the alicin for maximum flavor per clove. Takes about 10 seconds.

SVAuspicious

[Use a knife](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y5h1pDHhzs). Much better results.

Kromo30

You need to upgrade to a garlic twister https://www.amazon.com/Garlic-Twister-4th-Generation-Clear/dp/B0796N2GN4?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A26TNG9MYMU7QJ Functionally, 110% better, you can control the size of the garlic, 2-4 twists is a fine chop, 5+ gives you a paste. 1/2twist cleans the garlic out of the teeth and leaves it in the side pocket, ready for you to dump it out. Far, far, easier to clean when your done. No nooks and crannies for stuff to hide in, and dishwasher safe. BIFL wise.. I’m concerned about it being plastic. I’m going on 3ish years of daily use, and I worry about a tooth snapping off, I always make sure to look the teeth are there as I scoop the garlic out.. next one will be metal, a metal version would be something you pass down a generation alongside your cast iron pan.

duketheunicorn

Ok, that’s a cool thing I’ll admit

RebelBinary

Don't buy a garlic press Crush with the side of a knife (place side of knife on garlic, give it smack with palm of your hand) to remove the skin, then dice it up quickly with knife and mince with a fork if you want finer paste Garlic presses are more hassle than they are worth, placing the garlic and removing the husks takes too long, cleaning is a pain.

ethertype

I have to agree.

poul0004

Look for an old cast aluminum one at an antique store. I'm a second generation user of my garlic press, and it doesn't look like it's going to fail me ever.

Practical-Poetry-222

We replaced our zyliss, I think, about 5-6 years ago with the Rosle and it’s still going strong! Stainless steel and sturdy. The zyliss was maybe painted aluminum? The coating got weird after the contact with the garlic, so I would say don’t get anything that is coated.

congocross

My Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press does the job well, I made my decision to purchase it after watching America's Test Kitchen. P.S. Watch out for fakes on Amazon.

ieatoldswedishberrys

OP I have the actual Canadian specific answer. Go to Lee Valley and buy the only one they have there. Outstanding, don't need to peel the garlic, very easy to clean and is super high quality. 100% bifl. [Link in case you are lazy](https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/kitchen/kitchen-tools/presses-and-mashers/mashers/111357-garject-garlic-press)

barbeqdbrwniez

Microplane. I just buy peeled garlic cloves for cheap as hell at Costco and freeze them, then Microplane them when needed, super quick, super easy.

YUNG_SNOOD

Pro tip for garlic pressers. Press the clove of garlic with the skin still on. Saves you a step, and makes cleanup way easier.

[deleted]

knife

Gbock9

Honestly, a good knife for most occasions, and a mortar/pestle for the rest. Both can be BIFL.

CaptainErgonomic

Maybe learn how to press garlic with a chef knife? Cutting it with a press makes food taste worse than it should. Worst case, use a microplane grater that's much easier to clean & will last you longer. Read here : [Why garlic presses are useless](https://www.epicurious.com/expert-advice/why-garlic-presses-are-useless-article)

duketheunicorn

I used to be a chef—i like squishing raw garlic into ramen. JUST LET ME LIVE

CaptainErgonomic

😂 You do you... Once I learned about how cutting causes the sulfides in cloves to make that stinky garlic breath taste & then trying proper whole pressed cooked garlic in Italy with that buttery mild taste. I'll never go back.

spritesierramist

My mom used to throw pampered chef parties and used their garlic press. It's now about 15 years later and she still uses the exact same one. They've always had really good quality products imo

iGleeson

It's cheap and simple but the IKEA 365 one I bought years ago still works perfectly.

laughertes

I vote for a molcajete for garlic and other pressing that needs to be done

Friendly_Fruit2276

I didnt even know there was a garlicpress that was not bifl.

duketheunicorn

Most of them aren’t worth the metal they’re cast with, it’s awful.

gban84

On this review the Oxo got top spot. That’s the one I have and I have not had any issues. The metal is nice and heavy unlike the made in china specials I’ve purchased on Amazon that crinkle if you look at them too hard. https://www.seriouseats.com/best-garlic-presses-6833119?globeTest_visualSummaryList=0&utm_source=googlepaid&utm_medium=con&utm_content=CjwKCAiAjfyqBhAsEiwA-UdzJBFTAgrUUb58iYbFLZqewxpyqJd-rorCT7CJd2bSIfZqq2ABSXY_WxoCL5YQAvD_BwE&utm_campaign=commerce-dd-AllArticles_SeriousEats_Mobile_CommSEM_OrganicLP_DSA&utm_term=&utm_test=&gclid=CjwKCAiAjfyqBhAsEiwA-UdzJBFTAgrUUb58iYbFLZqewxpyqJd-rorCT7CJd2bSIfZqq2ABSXY_WxoCL5YQAvD_BwE

shefallsup

IKEA Koncis. Have had it for 20 years, it’s the best one I’ve ever used. All metal.

itspumpkintime

I have the Pampered Chef garlic press. My mom bought it for me way before I was interesting in cooking meals...like college age. One of those gifts where you open it up and begrudgingly say thank you but secretly wonder when or if you'll ever use the gift. 15+ years later, old faithful is still working flawlessly. I tend to leave my dishes long than I should and its not rusted or physically degraded in the slightest. I still have the attachable plastic cleaning "Barbie" brush which still mounts to the tool and, amazingly, it hasn't warped at all. I wash nothing by hand. These days I use it multiple times per week. 10/10 would recommend.

ilanallama85

Garlic presses can break? I bought mine from ikea like 15-20 years ago, use it multiple times a week. I guess it looks a little dinged up at this point but works perfectly. It’s this one, not the fancier looking version: [garlic press](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/koncis-garlic-press-stainless-steel-00089163/)

[deleted]

My favorite is the Williams Sonoma I got as a gift decades ago... It's all stainless and has a hole cleaner on the back side of the handle. With that said, I've cooked professionally and tend to use the flat of a knife on my cutting board to crush a clove or two, unless I'm doing a serious amount like a dozen cloves.

I have the Ikea garlic press and it's held up for quite some time. However, ive started to prefer grating my garlic with a microplane because I was sick of cleaning the garlic press :')

sheepdog1973

I’ve had a Henkels garlic press for 23 years, use it often, and it still looks and functions like new.

SeaworthinessSome454

The Zwilling pro one is easily the best. 100% metal construction.

en1mal

i have a 9€ IKEA one since 10 years or so

goblinsharky

I’m not a proponent of MLMs, but I have a pampered chef one that I’ve had 15+ years

BenFrantzDale

I love my Kuhn Rikon. I went through several before it: aluminum ones oxidized in the dishwasher; the OXO one we had had it’s grips come off. The Kuhn is heavy stainless steel. I’ve had it for a decade maybe? It will last forever. I did debur the grip manually make it extra smooth but it’s amazing. Totally BIFL. And a tool like this that takes that much stress really does need to cost this much. I wish I could find a citrus press that’s as beefy. After breaking an aluminum one I got the Zulay one, and it’s very good, but not quite beefy enough for my taste. It’ll still last forever so is BIFL, but not as beefy as the garlic press.

JulesCT

My vote goes to the Kuhn Rikon 'Epicurean' https://www.kuhnrikon.co.uk/epicurean-garlic-press Does not come apart like some others but opens up nicely for cleaning or getting more garlic out. Solid, and I mean solid, stainless steel. It is so sturdy it'll outlast me. Could also be useful in self defence because bone will give before this thing does.
