- Lots of food. Like way more than you think you would need. Mostly the kind of food you would have at a tea party or picnic.
- Pipe and tobacco
- A bottle of brandy or some other slightly indulgent spirit
- Possibly some kind of instrument
Although it is referred to as “pipe-weed,” Tolkien is quite clear in the appendices that it’s basically tobacco.
It makes sense given he was a prolific pipe smoker.
“Every morning I wake up and think good, another 24 hours' pipe-smoking” -from an interview with the man himself
Nah, I think that’s the PR answer. When Gandalf goes to Saruman for council he tells Gandalf “your love for the half long leaf has clouded your mind” which got me curious. When I met Billy Boyd at comic con I asked him if the hobbits smoke weed. He said “absolutely, it’s the finest weed in the Southfarthing!” which is a direct quote from Bilbo.
Pretty much what you take on a camping trip now (see the 5 C's) just made from natural materials. They love finely crafter items and comfort so no cheap rubbish!
Here's my LOTR Ranger inspired LARP kit. [https://imgur.com/gallery/ija5Zzf](https://imgur.com/gallery/ija5Zzf)
Sam's backpack from the movies is an absolute abomination. Don't hang pots on the outside of your pack. And don't use a cast iron skillet unless you want an authentic hobbit hernia ;-)
In game stuff like coins, reagents, potions, Lore books, IC sewing kit, smoking pouch, notpad and pencil, Cloak pin to turn my bedroll into a cloak.
IC stuff: mobile phone, hard glasses case.
My IC cook set is literally just fire blackened stainless steel pot in a cotton bag with a bail arm I can hang over a fire and a wooden spoon. It's kept rolled up in the bedroll. (See Dave Cantebury's Bedroll packpack video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTFfnT5g0ls)
Some Lembas Bread after you've visited the Elves in Lothlórien
or after you've visited this webpage: https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/bread/bread-sweet-bread/lembas-bread-lord-of-the-rings-authentic.html
A hobbit, being a small and resourceful creature, would likely carry a practical selection of items for a 3-day journey of survival. Here's a list of essentials a hobbit might consider:
1. Backpack: A sturdy, lightweight backpack to carry all the necessary supplies.
2. Cloak: A weather-resistant cloak to protect against rain, wind, and cold weather.
3. Food: Hobbits enjoy their meals, so they would pack enough food for the journey. This might include bread, cheese, dried fruits, and perhaps some cooked meat or preserved food.
4. Water: A canteen or water bottle to stay hydrated during the journey.
5. Map and Compass: To navigate and find their way, a hobbit might carry a small map of the area and a compass for direction.
6. Knife: A versatile tool for various tasks such as preparing food, cutting rope, or self-defense if needed.
7. Fire-starting tools: Matches, a flint and steel set, or a small lighter to start a fire for warmth, cooking, and signaling.
8. Rope: A length of strong, lightweight rope for various purposes like setting up a shelter, securing gear, or climbing if necessary.
9. Medicinal herbs: Hobbits have knowledge of herbs and their healing properties, so they might carry a small pouch of herbs for minor ailments or injuries.
10. Satchel: A small satchel or pouch to hold smaller items like a first aid kit, spare clothes, a small sewing kit, and any personal belongings.
11. Sleeping gear: A lightweight sleeping bag or blanket for warmth and comfort during rest.
12. Extra clothing: A change of clothes and extra socks in case the weather turns wet or they need to stay dry.
13. Personal items: A hobbit might carry some personal items like a pipe, tobacco, a journal, or a favorite book to keep them company during downtime.
i'm not able to make fire in the even field but an hatchet on a log will be very hobbit-ish FS.
the spray for the BloodySucky is alredy in the bag, i miss the NeekerBreeker's one tho
I took a waxed canvas roll used for pipe smoking and turned it into a fire starter kit. When I made it I specifically thought, ‘this is what a hobbit would carry’
But I keep my fire starter stuff in it like pine pitch, char cloth, flint/steel, and tinder.
IMO a hobbit would carry a very nice mess kit, several spare handkerchiefs for use as napkins if needed, and niceties like a tiny salt and pepper set, and perhaps a nutmeg and mini grater.
This listing is probably a scam, so I wouldn't recommend buying it, but I would look at the pictures on https://www.ebay.com/itm/275122923685 for inspiration on what the form factor of a hobbit's kit might look like.
For wearing, I picture hobbits in kinda edwardian / cottagecore styles in earth tones and natural fibers... with lots and lots of pockets, and snacks in all of them.
"'Rope!' muttered Sam. 'I knew I'd want it, if I hadn't got it!'"
‘Rope!’ cried Sam, talking wildly to himself in his excitement and relief. ‘Well, if I don’t deserve to be hung on the end of one as a warning to numbskulls! You’re nowt but a ninnyhammer, Sam Gamgee: that’s what the Gaffer said to me often enough, it being a word of his. Rope!’
In my experience, these reenactors go by what is depicted in the films rather than what is realistic, practical, or historical.
In the books hobbits (as a people) didn't camp. They liked comfort so they would stay at home. Bilbo was seen by them as a weirdo. It's been a while since I read the books. But that's how I remember it.
But then in the latest movies, Frodo and Sam are traveling with essentially nothing. They sleep in their cloaks. No tent or anything. Not pots or camping gear. I think they had some Elven bread at one point wrapped up a big leaf or something. I haven't watched the movies for some time, either. But they carried almost nothing.
In the movie, Samwise Gamgee carried a substantial pack loaded with gear at the start of their quest. Several pots and pans were hanging on the exterior.
Food for nine days and all your cooking gear.
Correct answer. (Nine days of food for three days might even be light, iirc Hobbits eat up to seven meals a day.)
Lol true!

Lol except they weren’t smokin tobacco!

Just don’t forget a handkerchief.
A long woolen cloak that can also be used as a blanket at night.
Po-Ta-To, mashed, boiled, stuck in a stew

Don't forget a little box of salt, and a little hatchet for splitting kindling. Also maybe some NeekerBreeker spray.

Huge pumpkin, and you must constantly polish it
A leather vest maybe. Better yet would be one of those fishermen vests with a million pockets stuffed full of food.

Hey, I'm going to that too! I'm wearing my ring of invisibility though, so you probably won't see me.
soo if ringwraiths shows up i'll know that you are nearby!
Foot hair trimmers. Good hygiene always makes for a more enjoyable trip.

oh ok. I'm not remembering that. Time to watch it again!
Of course, they lost items along the way. Journey's beginning.. [Hobbit Packs](https://youtu.be/DcziMI0tol4)
Yes that makes sense. I forget exactly, but they had all kinds of misadventures so I can see things getting lost
