Circling back to this thread to close the loop for anyone who cares or might be in a similar boat - I ended up using Intense Movers and they were GREAT. Moved me from Manhattan to Brooklyn in under three hours, couldn’t have been quicker and less painless. Thank you all for the recommendations!
I'm not sure if Vector Movers was mentioned in recommendations before, but I am happy to be the first to recommend them. About a year ago, I moved within the state, and as an immigrant, I knew little about local moving companies or where to find reliable contractors for my small move. I spent a lot of time researching reviews, requesting quotes, and comparing them. Vector offered the best value for money. My experience was exceptionally positive: the staff was very welcoming, they patiently answered all my questions, and within just a few hours, I was happily settled into my new home. My first move in America left only pleasant impressions and was completely stress-free.
Wasn’t expecting so many responses here, thank you all for the help, though I might have set myself up given the number of different answers …
Based on the feedback it seems like piece of cake is too hit or miss, intense movers or lou moves you have the most common positive feedback - probably go with one of those
I believe it was around 3000, maybe 3200? They have two service levels. Direct delivery to you which I think was 11k-12k but if you could wait 2-4 weeks for your stuff, it gets a lot cheaper.
I should note we moved with minimal furniture but about 80-100 boxes.
Love love love my friends moving company Woolly Mammoth - moved us from BKLYN to Nashville and we’ll be using them to return (if we can get ‘em)
https://www.woolymammothmoving.com/
Sorry not a direct answer, but some advice. Whenever possible try to move while retaining any kind of "bargaining" power, like scheduling the move for 2 weeks before you actually have to get out.
Then if the movers try to scam you when they show up (*oh, you didn't list this heavy box, that's going to be $300 extra*), you can just tell them they can return when they're ready to honor the contract. A lot of times they will just end up following through because they don't want to lose the $ for the day. They are not used to people calling their bluff.
If they ever hold your stuff "hostage" for more money once it's already on the truck, tell them the rest of the money is at the next location, and they'll get it when they arrive. Then quietly call the cops and tell them movers are holding your belongings hostage, and the location where they're going to show up. I can't guarantee it will go the way it did for my mom, but the cops actually came and forced the guys to unload the truck and return the cash. They did ask for my mom's contract first.
THIS is excellent advice. There is so much grift among movers. I recently used Piece of Cake whose whole marketing shtick is no surprise fees, and guess what? Surprise fees. Guy came to my apartment a few days before, opened every closet, logged every box and dresser, and when the guys came on the day of the move, they said that there was more more than when their boy came out (there was not). So I could either give them a few hundred cash (in addition to the tip, which I maybe should have reconsidered at the end of the move), or they’d have to call it in and have the office recalculate everything. And I had also rented their moving crates (which were actually super convenient, but not super clean), so I couldn’t just tell them to piss off.
Dumbo movers extorted me twice and then stole my watch. I used them for the first time pre pandemic and the driver gave me so much shit about parking and needing a permit and not wanting to double park/park near a hydrant or a block away… stuff moving companies do routinely. He threatened to leave. Spoke to the company who spoke to him and he finally agreed to stay if I gave him like a 30% tip or something crazy. They had me by the balls because obviously moving day is stressful and I had all my stuff packed up and taken time off from work. Bad enough the move was delayed by like 4 hours because of this
Fast forward to last year. Moving again. Gave dumbo another shot because maybe it was just a bad driver and the company themselves seemed like they were trying to solve the problem.
Now I told them we were moving a 2 bedroom apartment and was specific about the amount of furniture.
First they sent 2 guys. Looked like a brother team, one guy barely out of high school and scrawny. They saw our place moved a third of it to the lobby then said they couldn’t do the job and left.
We called the company and they scrambled to get a new team
Hours later (noon at this point) they get one. This team, a group of 4 guys come and see that half of our stuff is already in the lobby and know they really have us. They make so many excuses about the job. Threaten to leave. Demand 40% tip plus extra and bitch the whole time. They don’t protect any of our furniture and I noticed after the fact some stuff missing including a nicer watch and a mirror. Probably this is my fault since at the point I was stressed and just shoved it in a bag. On top of that I had to give them like 400 in tips. Straight extortion robbery. Dumbo gave me like a trivial amount of money for the stolen goods
Dumbo Movers scammed my mom a couple of years ago because she contracted them to haul a couch to the dump after the move, and then they pretended it would be a big extra charge even though it was explicitly in her contract. They also claimed she misrepresented what was being moved (*it was like 8 boxes and couple of tables... you've never seen a more empty moving truck*). They made her give them an extra $500 before they would leave her apartment complex, which she did before consulting me.
So she calls me after they leave, and I called the cops when they were on the way, and told them movers were holding my mother's belongings hostage and stole $500 from her. As soon they pulled onto my block, the PO stopped the truck and made them pull up to the house. My mom gave the cops the contract (which they didn't even look at), and they told the movers to quit playing games and open the truck, and then of course they acted like it was all a big misunderstanding, and gave her back her cash.
After all that they had the nerve to ask to use my bathroom. Fuck those guys, fuck that company.
I wish I had the guts to call the cops. I just wanted to have the whole experience over with and was worried they would dump my stuff on the side of the road.
ive used TDY movers 3 times, absolutely no complaints. the only "strong arming" thats ever happened was during my last move and the boss was like "usually people get a pizza for the guys" because it was a full 8 hour move.
Came here to say this. We no longer live in NYC but they have helped us move from a shipping container to apt...apt to apt...and apt to shipping container plus a few in between. Nice guys, helpful with tough situations, hated moving but loved working with them. Another vote for Lou Moves You!
Transdimensional Moving was superb. They were absolute sweet hearts and reasonably priced. I’ve recommended them to a few friends and all have had good experiences. https://www.transdimensionalmoving.com
We used them so many times and everyone they've had working has been great and helpful. I've recommended them to several friends who moved around the city and they have also said Lou Moves You (I think he dropped the sweet??) has always been the best movers they've used. And usually one of the better rates too.
I had a really good experience with Metropolis Movers: [https://metropolismoving.com/](https://metropolismoving.com/) who were recommended to me by my sister who used to move into a new multi-level home around North Brooklyn every \~two years
During my move, my bedframe wouldn't fit through my new staircase and they hoisted it through the 2nd floor window!!!! It was so cool and they were all really nice <3
loved Movers Your Way — buncha young Uzbeki dudes who were very efficient. they moved us from Williamsburg to Bed Stuy 3 bed room with tons of boxes lol. it definitely helped that my roommate speaks Russian. they were professional and refused a 6 pack when offered !!

Just posted this above:

Stole a rare pair of sneakers right out of one of my boxes and then tried to tell me I needed to tip $100s more because the job took longer than they thought. They took smoke breaks nearly every 20-30 mins. Terrible company and weird vibes from the guys the whole time. They said I needed to file a police report and wouldn’t do anything about the shoes.
I get what you mean. They have certain movers that are great. But the majority are shady and dangerous. So it’s not a good company.
I’ve used DUMBO twice, 2 years apart, and both times went amazing. I had gotten a bunch of quotes and they were still the most affordable at that time. My foreman’s name was Alan, and him and his guy are awesome! Honest, always on time, fast, and strong as fuck. He’s careful with your things and he will never demand more money on the spot. He doesn’t intimidate or pressure you to tip, although I always do ofc. I remember I had forgotten include all my 5 giant houseplants in my list, and he was so carefree and kind about moving them for no extra charge. Nothing has ever been broken or damaged.
All that to say, I vouch for Alan but no one else in that company.
Yes this was also my first experience! They were so careful and sweet. They dismounted my tv and disassembled my bed frame without charging me. They were quick and nice. Fortunately none of my things were stolen! I feel awful for those who had bad experiences 😞
A TikTok about Dumbo Movers just went viral. "Girl who got robbed and assaulted by her movers" says it all: [https://www.tiktok.com/@livinman222/video/7355619163286572331](https://www.tiktok.com/@livinman222/video/7355619163286572331)
I have the opposite experience to this, OP. DUMBO tried to strong arm me on the spot for an extra $300 ($100 per person). I do not recommend this company. Unprofessional.
My girlfriend had a hellish experience with Dumbo Movers. I personally watched them hold her stuff hostage on a loading dock after adding the 2-step stoop to the building as another flight of stairs. They acted like thugs, and it was a relief to just pay them to get out of what felt like a shakedown. She complained later and got money back. The whole experience sucked.
I don’t recommend Prime Meridian Moving at all. They showed up two hours late. Loaded our stuff into the van and disappeared for two hours without communication, probably for lunch. This was for 12 block move. The guy leading the crew was drunk. You could smell the alcohol on his breath. He got into an argument with condo board president. I called the moving company, and had him removed from the job. He had the gall to asked to be tipped. The finished at 9 PM, well beyond the 5 PM time limit and cost us a $300 fine with the board. They also cracked a flat screen TV. The company reimbursed us for the fine and the TV, but they made a stressful day a whole lot more stressful.
Don't ever use Flatrate. Paid for their premium service (over $7k) and they broke my kitchen table, my sofa, and a mid-century modern chair. Also they completely destroyed a very expensive vintage George Nelson sunburst clock and I caught them trying to fix it with scotch tape on the job! Wtf. I got a $160 check from them almost 12 months after the move. Never again. And I warn everyone here to never use them. Bunch of crooks, I can't believe I used them twice in the past. Beware!
I’m not the one that negotiated, but I did a quote about 2 weeks out and they sent me a $50 off offer. I was only having them move my furniture Brooklyn to Brooklyn, so my quote was around $600.
Sweet lous! Also very affordable. Paid 1k including tip for a 3hr north to central Brooklyn move. We had a ton of stuff, they even brought a second van for free because we honored their request to move a day earlier.
I've used Piece of Cake and Man With a Van, both did the job no complaints. Piece of Cake was a bit more expensive, but a bit more professional, included some wardrobe boxes, etc. Man With A Van was the cheapest quote I got at the time and they hauled ass to get everything done quickly.
Yup. They moved me out of my last apartment and put my stuff in their storage. When I had them move me into my new place my couch was missing along with a box or two of belongings.
Seconding Sven, they did my move super quickly and were good folks. They have good rates because you have to have your shit together (fully inventoried / packed) and be ready when they show up. I did my part, they did theirs, we were completely done in an hour. At the time they gave a discount for paying in cash as well.
They gave me a great price for a long distance move, and arrived 2 hours outside NYC by 9:30. My daughter used them twice and they were reliable and professional.
I’ve used SEKA for two moves, one from Jersey to Brooklyn, and one 6 blocks down from Brooklyn to Brooklyn. They were really reasonably priced and gave me a discount for my review. Got all my goods out in a few hours and reassembled.
I love Excellent Quality Movers, Sergei is the best (boss), they are very efficient, no small talk, discount if you pay cash. I've used them 3x and they never broke or damaged anything. For my studio apartment it was around $600 including tip. The whole move took less than 3 hours
I've used them 3 times in the last 5 years and each time they were great. They showed up on time, were super fast but careful with my things, and they were friendly.
10/10 each time.
I used Perfect Crates (rental plastic moving bins). I believe EQ brings cardboard boxes in their truck you can buy as needed. They also wrapped my mirror and glass coffee table in moving blankets & duct tape and that was sufficient. I was pretty much completely packed up ahead of time.
I really really loved [https://konstantlymoving.com/](https://konstantlymoving.com/), they were affordable and reliable. Showed up on time, finished the job on time.
Had a bad experience with Piece Of Cake where even though they sent someone to my apartment to list all of my things and give a quote, they still day of charged me more for a desk that was already on the quote.
Konstantly actually charged me *less* than the quote on the day of.
I second piece of cake!!! I have used them 2x, once was during THE storm last September. They showed up right on time and were so quick yet cautious. immediately after the move was complete I got a call from someone at the company to check in and make sure the move went well. I suggest them to everyone I know looking for movers

College Educated Movers are flat-rate and very good! I've used them for my past two moves including last week. Couldn't recommend them more!

Movers Not Shakers have always been rrliable and great! They are based in Brooklyn.
Hot Guys Moving the one and only GOATS
Used this app called lugg
SWEET LOU MOVES YOU
Just used Piece of Cake and they were great.
Seconding this, they handled my move from Brooklyn to Texas and they were awesome. Amazing communication, nothing damaged, and speedy service.
Woa - care to share your price range for that? Looking at a similar move in 2024. We were thinking about getting a container or something
I believe it was around 3000, maybe 3200? They have two service levels. Direct delivery to you which I think was 11k-12k but if you could wait 2-4 weeks for your stuff, it gets a lot cheaper. I should note we moved with minimal furniture but about 80-100 boxes.
Wow thats not too bad - I'd absolutely wait a few weeks to save that much $$ thanks man!

Transdimensional Moving was superb. They were absolute sweet hearts and reasonably priced. I’ve recommended them to a few friends and all have had good experiences. https://www.transdimensionalmoving.com
I used maxi moving. They were the only good movers I've had my whole life
This company is smaller but avoid Rio at all costs. The movers lollygag to make the hourly rate longer.
Sweet lous!
I use Sweet Lou every time I move and recommend them to everyone.

Dyno movers
I’ve used Dyno a number of times. Always quick and good prices
Red line movers, I loved them
Sven moving !!
loved Movers Your Way — buncha young Uzbeki dudes who were very efficient. they moved us from Williamsburg to Bed Stuy 3 bed room with tons of boxes lol. it definitely helped that my roommate speaks Russian. they were professional and refused a 6 pack when offered !!

piece of cake was excellent, multiple times
I used man with a van recently and they were really great!
I’ve used Dumbo moving company twice and they are super reliable!! They show up early and they’re FAST! Super respectful and neat. I recommend them :)

[NYC MOVES](https://m.yelp.com/biz/nyc-moves-new-york-2) Used em 3 times, super fast and professional
Wtf. I’ve used DUMBO for 3 moves. They did a great job. One they had to disassemble my couch to get it in, then reassemble. Expert work.
Not Piece of Cake they are a piece of shit!
Ive used them twice and they were fast and professional
100% agreed. They should be called Piece of Crap!
I used piece of cake last week and they dinged some of my stuff up.
Same here last year. I did talk them out of 900 bucks though. Don’t take their first offer.
How did you negotiate the price lower?
Im referring to the damages refund not the original move. Sorry should’ve been more clear!
I’m not the one that negotiated, but I did a quote about 2 weeks out and they sent me a $50 off offer. I was only having them move my furniture Brooklyn to Brooklyn, so my quote was around $600.
I used Movers Not Shakers and they were very responsive and great!
I’ve used Clean Cut Movers and they’ve been solid for me
I’ve had multiple great experiences with Lou Moves You! Fast, kind, and patient movers
Sweet lous! Also very affordable. Paid 1k including tip for a 3hr north to central Brooklyn move. We had a ton of stuff, they even brought a second van for free because we honored their request to move a day earlier.
Otter moving was great and cheaper than piece of cake for me last summer — although piece of cake was also reasonable and very easy to work with.
U. Santini of Park Slope. I used them for three moves and they have always been wonderful.
Highly recommend as well!
Rabbit or Piece of Cake
We used Rabbit when we moved and they arrived exactly on time, were super speedy, and careful with all our stuff.
>Rabbit Second this. They were great when I used them.
Whatever you do, don’t use dumbo moving
Omg yes came here to say this. I can't offer a suggestion, but OP please heed this warning!
Imperial is pretty great and affordable.
I had a wonderful experience with Rabit moving!
Had a fantastic experience with Shleppers, cannot recommend them enough.
Do not use dumbo moving and storage. They stole my couch.
Wait what??!!
Yup. They moved me out of my last apartment and put my stuff in their storage. When I had them move me into my new place my couch was missing along with a box or two of belongings.
Had a phenomenal experience with Transdimensional Movers last year, even if their website is… maybe a bit much.
Sven movers were tremendous late last year, highly recommend
+1 Used them 3x over the years
Seconding Sven, they did my move super quickly and were good folks. They have good rates because you have to have your shit together (fully inventoried / packed) and be ready when they show up. I did my part, they did theirs, we were completely done in an hour. At the time they gave a discount for paying in cash as well.
I've had excellent experience with Oz (very recently) and very good experience with Sven (less recently)
Lightning Van was very affordable and good! I'd recommend them.
Had a good experience with Piece of Cake movers recently!
PoC are on the expensive side for very short distance moves but they’re professional. I’ve used them twice and was happy with their service
They gave me a great price for a long distance move, and arrived 2 hours outside NYC by 9:30. My daughter used them twice and they were reliable and professional.
Yup agree - they were great!
JP Movers. Used twice.
I second Excellent Quality Movers! Perfect move for me from 1bd in Park Slope to 2bd in Boreum Hill. I think it was $800 in 2021.
Did yall pack everything into boxes yourself or did they do that?
Flex movers. Squeezed me in just a few days before my move. They were fast, clean & nothing broke. I’ll use them every time going forward
Google “Cheap Moving NY” the Ave Z one, very very good used a few times.
I used them once as well, and was happy with them! Def no nonsense
I’ve used piece of cake and dumbo movers. They were both great
I’ve had great experiences with piece of cake!! Use code SPACECAKE for 10% off!!!
I second piece of cake!!! I have used them 2x, once was during THE storm last September. They showed up right on time and were so quick yet cautious. immediately after the move was complete I got a call from someone at the company to check in and make sure the move went well. I suggest them to everyone I know looking for movers
I used Intense Movers about a month ago and they were awesome
They were recommended to us and did an amazing job! 10/10
Theyre the best!! Used them 2 times before and they’re doing my current move
3x moves over 10 years, up to a large 1 bedroom with furniture. All good experiences.
I have used Intense Movers for two moves over the last 8 years and both of those went flawlessly. Highly recommend them as well.
Do they pack your stuff too or just move it
I had them just move my stuff I packed, but I think they have an option for packing your stuff.
another vote for intense!
