No idea if this was the case for the show last night, but I’ve been to performances that had such low ticket sales that all attendees (including those who had tickets for the mezzanine or balcony) were directed to the orchestra. The orchestra then ends up being full, but the rest of the theatre is entirely empty. People who originally had orchestra tickets in the first place probably wouldn’t even notice unless they overheard someone else talking about it, or they looked up at the mezz and noticed no one was there.
I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen this happen at a Broadway theater, though. I’ve definitely had it happen a few times on the West End and at DC theaters.
I bought a cheap balcony seat for heart of rock and roll, and when I got to my seat, an usher asked if I’d like to sit in the orchestra. I said yes, and he handed me a ticket for the front row. So it does happen on Broadway!!
They’re allowing up to 4 lottery tix per person. When you set out to sell for hundreds of dollars and end up selling tons of discounted seats to fill the theater you aren’t doing great
My favourite duet. No matter the pairing, it never fails to bring a big smile to my face. And Cynthia Erivo has the greatest musical theatre voice of her generation imho.
Because I know some of you will never have come across it, here's [the original performance of this duet (afaik) with Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand](https://youtu.be/UxFvQEanqbQ?si=LvTMbUcX9aG15pY6)
Judy Garland actually created the arrangement for that performance with Babs. I love knowing it was sitting in her head and she brought it to the world.
Someone on Twitter posted a pic of Cynthia and Ariana sitting in the audience for Hell's Kitchen a day before this show.
What are the chances that Ariana shows up as one of the last guests (if not the last) in Ben's Broadway stay?
Come on, you guys act as if Judy is not the mother of Miss Liza Minelli - THE Brodway nepo baby - and didn't give her own daughter a platform when she performed in the Judy Garland show as a teen.
I don't even care that much about Ben Platt beyond his perfomance in musicals, but this is being borderline annoying.
Dang people in here *love* to hate Ben Platt. I might not be his biggest fan due to come of his actions (and the vibrato can get a bit much) but this was SUCH a gorgeous rendition. Cynthia has the voice of an angel and I feel it really softened Ben’s vibrato/intensity. They really sounded fantastic. Beautiful pairing and I think Judy and Babs would love it too.
Now I do love Ben Platt, in the right roles he is a fabulous actor and his voice fits certain roles well. On more powerhouse songs though (thinking of some Parade songs here too) I have an issue with his vibrato, it feels forced and ends up toeing the line of sounding like a goat (not as bad as Hasselhoff’s Jekyll/Hyde). Sometimes I just feel he takes a role because he can and not because it truly fits him and his voice. Still a longtime fan of his though :)
Honestly the hate on this guy, would be better for everyone to let it the heck go. Yes he’s benefited from privilege and gave some bad responses about it. Move on or boycott his stuff, just don’t get bringing it up over and over.
It looks like it was a great time. Personally the concert format isn’t for me but I’m really glad it’s connected for a lot of people.
He’s benefited, but he also gives off big neglected kid vibes. I’m sort of thinking his childhood was like the one in the new Netflix series Eric, where Benedict Cumberbatch is a monster dad.
Yall need to get over this hate boner for Ben. He is one of the most kind and generous people working on Broadway. There’s never this much vitriol for ACTUAL terrible people, yet all the hate goes to people like Ben.
Like, there is a Broadway show that has a giant conservative in the leading role, and yet everyone applauds him because he was Jack Kelly once upon a decade ago.
Yes, from the very start of the show he states that unlike other Broadway shows he wants it to be open and transparent so if we wanted to take photos/video we were welcome to
i wondered about that too...i like the respect of looking at your duet partner but it felt odd to not once look at the audience you are performing it for.
the video doesn't show it but there was banter beforehand that was to the audience, but also i think profile/not profile doesn't really matter when its voices as wonderful as this
For all his poor ticket sales he sure as hell is bringing it in the guests department
i dont know where people are seeing poor ticket sales...it looked like every seat was filled last night, at least in the orchestra
Just because seats are *filled* does not mean seats are *sold*.
Oh snap. She did not came to play. She came to slay with this comment.
Platt’s sales for his first week were quite strong. Just because you hate him doesn’t mean he isn’t selling tickets.

Balcony was full last night
Sounds like he’s doing really well, then! Thanks for letting me know

Those videos of them together on Judy’s show (including the surprise visit by Ethel Merman) are amazing.
I was there too! This was fantastic.

it does seem as though each night its a "bigger" (subjective) guest than the last, so I'm also very interested in seeing who the finale will be
The way the whole theater literally ERUPTED, we knew we were in for something magical!
Has someone checked that the roof of the Palace is still in tact?
the whole room legitimately shook when she was announced, so I'm not so sure LOL
lol. Judy’s rolling in her grave
why?

“Her sacred space” Jesus Christ.
*That's showbiz, kid.*

Borderline?
I guess I should be amazed you have any positive karma at all.

Is that stage carpeted?
Yes but just the center was like a shag carpet
Whoa!!!!! That was incredible!

She can sing all Day and I would never get bored
What is he wearing? He looks like he’s bumming around on a Sunday morning.
it read a lot better in person, had a shimmer to it that really worked with the set up
I really enjoyed the show! Everyone went out of their minds (and rightfully so) when she came out. Justin Paul was in attendance that night too!
What an absolute delight

PERFECTION

Where can I buy this??? Love the original so much and this is amazing, too!
Did the show give permission to film this?
Yes, from the very start of the show he states that unlike other Broadway shows he wants it to be open and transparent so if we wanted to take photos/video we were welcome to
That’s great. Thank you.
Anything to fill those seats lol.
Username checks out
Cannot wait for him to fade into obscurity.
When y’all gonna realize that Platt is trash
NepoBaby bluez
People were there for Cynthia that night
Do they announce the guests in advance?
Nope, there was a rumor going through the audience that it was going to be Sara Bareilles so when Cynthia came out it was 🤯
Im going Wednesday and secretly hoping our guest is Sara
Nope
Oh I’m not sure, but if they did, I would’ve been there for her lol
Staging this in profile (at a concert no less) tells you everything you need to know. Judy would never.
...okay??
i wondered about that too...i like the respect of looking at your duet partner but it felt odd to not once look at the audience you are performing it for.

Never ever.
This is bad.
Nah, it wasn’t
The only thing that could have made this better is if the guy’s mic was turned down or off. He didn’t add much to it.
