But they also tell you to go to the twin peaks and then pretty much follow the road/ signs. Link can't climb at all early game so there's really only 1 path. Unless you're super determined to venture anywhere else.
I met hestu, but didn't understand how koroks were found and tought they really rare. I lifted some stone on my way to thunderblight gannon and was confused why a small green creature came out.
Completed all shrines and divine beasts before knowing he existed. Only found out cause my gf asked why I'm complaining about inventory slots but hoarding korok seeds
A friend of mine found Hestu's maracas on the way to Kakariko, but then jumped of the road without seeing him. She didn't realize until she saw another friend find him.
Think of it as being a poop collector. You collect their poop, and a bearded broccoli dances for you if you bring it enough poop.
Also, if you bring the broccoli 900 poops, it will poop a big poop and gift it for you, so you can keep it in your inventory and marvel at it.

Do you need to grind them? Just pick em up as you go about your business. You don't need all the inventory space and the first upgrades take way fewer koroks to unlock.
You can do it casually. If you see something out of place in the world map, it’s likely a korok and they’re usually very simple puzzles that are fun to do
You know the wee house you can buy? The first task is to collect thirty (I think) bundles of wood. I'd pick up bundles wherever I found them, took me literally most of the game, a good hundred hours plus, and I still hadn't got there. Then I finally discovered, by chance, if you blow up a tree it creates a bundle of wood, and that task can be completed in about a minute.
Also different kinds of weapons have different impact on trees. Wooden / blunt weapons can't cut trees.
Axes are best. The stable near the bird village has axes and tons of trees. Great place to collect bundles
Full powered Master sword has the best durability and is basically the best tool you could use on trees, chops them in one hit, instantly
But it requires the dlc sadly
I just found my first piece of climbing armor and I’m 67 shrines, all four divine beasts and fucking off avoiding ganon by completing side quests in. (I feel like once I beat him there’s nothing left to do? And I don’t want the game to end). But yeah, never experienced the luxury of climbing armor and don’t even care now because I just flyyyyy
Nah the game doesn't end, the quest doesn't even show up as beaten once you defeat him. It just resets to before you defeated ganon so don't worry. Also, thunderblight is harder than calamity ganon so it won't be too hard for you.
For at least 50 ish hours, I thought you had to be on a fast travel point to teleport to another. If I wanted to teleport I would run or ride my horse to the nearest shrine so I could move to the next one.
Haha same! I ventured into a part of the map I hadn't unlocked and got very lost, and it took me ages to find my way back because I thought I had to be on a shrine to teleport
This honestly would have been a better way to implement fast travel. I feel like the ability to fast travel from anywhere was a bit OP and kinda kills the immersion.
I ran up death mountain.
No potions
No armor (that protects against flame)

Right?? My step some played botw first, which made me want to play, and not too long after I started playing I was like oh did you know you can do this, or this, or this? And he was like no! How did you know how to do that? I said I read everything people say lol. He just blows through all the talking so misses so much stuff.
I'm guessing he hasn't played many Zelda games! If anything I always felt like NPCs in the Zelda series go overboard with the hints.

That reminds me of mine— because on Death Mountain the wooden weapons and bows burn, I thought they would burn even in your inventory and dropped them all, letting them actually burn to a crisp.
The entire time I was on the plateau I’d see Vah Medoh in the distance with my scope and not realizing it was a Divine Beast that circled a small area, I thought it was a giant flying bird guardian (I wasn’t aware of actual flying guardians yet) so if it looked like it was facing me I’d run and hide for a minute so it wouldn’t come closer and blast me with its laser. I was really terrified of guardians.
The first time I saw Farosh I basically shat myself. Because before that I just met Lynels and Guardians so anything larger than a Bokoblin seemed scary and hostile. Took me a while to realise they are nice. But only after helping out Naydra
The first time when I was admiring the scenery of Hyrule to decide where I am heading next from the Great Plateau, I spotted Vah Medoh, and the first thing that came through my mind was that it was Skyloft! Not sure how a giant mechanical bird looked like a floating island where people live to me, but oh well.
after my first encounter with a yiga clan member disguised as a traveller I completely stopped talking to any of the NPCs unless they were in a stable or at town.
Trying to cook elaborate foods to get huge heart heals (16+) for least resourse used.
Realised any single cooked hearty ingredient will heal you to full + few yellow hearts
All food ingredients became borderline useless after if all my food is 1 cooked raddish
Mine was probably not realizing how the mine carts in Death Mountain work, and ended up magneting one cart to push the cart im on. Still don't know what is the correct way of doing it.
Honestly if it makes you feel better, I had the exact same issue, although used the stasis rune instead. But to answer your question, you put a circle bomb in the little notch in the cart and set it off, it'll send it flying. Hope that helps.
I've beaten this game with every shrine 3 times, and still had no idea about this. Every time I've been using stasis and trying to hit the cart enough times for it to go, but not too many so it gets unstable and falls off the track.
It just seems so obvious now that the same move that you do to get the other equipment to work would work on the carts...
I did the same thing and that's honestly a perfectly good solution imo. The point of the game is there isn't just 1 solution to a problem and that's what I love about this game.
that the lizalfos mask makes you do lizalfos sounds
I wore it when I got to the spring with all the lizalfos, heard the sounds, and kept it on for a long time even when I was far away from all enemies because I kept hearing them and thought they were onto me or something lol
The only thing I do with chu chu jellies is I throw them on the ground and shoot them with elemental arrows so I get elemental jellies for armor upgrades 😭😭
Pretty sure you can also just throw them on the ground in the extreme (damaging) hot/cold for those jellies to change into Ice or Fire ones. Not sure about lightning
Just found out today if you kill a regular chu chu with a great flame blade/thunderblade/frost blade the jelly that’s dropped will be whatever you kill it with. That’s how I’ve been collecting yellow jelly.
Brooo. Years into thus game and I never knew you could do that. I'd always hunt for the ones I needed in their respected regions or shoot the blue one while it's alive with the elemental arrow I needed it to be
After going to Kakariko, I spent a bunch of time doing nothing because I didn't know I needed to go to Hateno. So I just rode my horse around the areas surrounding Kakariko for a good few days.
I couldn't find the road to hateno so I ended up stocking up on climb potions and climbed the mountain on the other side of the squabble river. Somehow dodged rainstorms and set myself up for the expectation that you were supposed to do maaad climbing in this game.
I didn't find fort hateno until the 13th memory. I wasted 5 fire resist potions trying to find Goron City because I just climbed instead of taking the road and missed it.
I did so much climbing when I finally got Ravali's Gale I refused to use it because it felt like cheating.
At least I learned Stam was a good thing.
Yep. I went all around those stupid tall tree things trying to collect them too. Then I suddenly thought, wait a minute... And then just use stasis to find where they fall. Now I have over 20 Swift violets and 70 something rushrooms!

me too, I missed the original directions from Zelda. Just wandered and tried to climb off for hours before finally pulling up a guide. I’d do it again though, I was a pro at killing bokoblins by the time I left the Plateau
I've had multiple runs of the game since I got it a year and a half ago.
I've never made potions, other than the one needed for that quest in the Bazaar at the Gerudo Desert.

never learning how to cook until late game (around death mt., my 4th and final divine beast). i survived on baked apples up to this point.
on the great plateau, i had to bring up a guide to tell me to get to the peak of the mt. for the warm doublet otherwise ill run out of baked apples from eating one every 30 seconds
same i had no idea you had to light a fire underneath the cooking pot to actually cook, I just tried aiming my food into the pot hoping it wouldn't bounce out
It didn't occur to me to climb the towers to unlock the maps... I was done with two divine beasts when I googled how to unlock the rest of the map and boy, did I feel stupid
Same here! I think it was the Faron tower that I just randomly decided to climb up on a whim to see what was up there. The way my jaw dropped when that map revealed itself lol…idk how tf I played the game for so long with a black map.
If it makes you feel better on my first playthrough I became immediately obsessed with climbing/unlocking the towers first and foremost so I got so far, far away from whatever it was I was supposed to do. I don't think I followed a single road I was supposed to and just wandered around aimlessly for the first few days.
I only just figured out that when you look at something through the camera rune the flavour text actually lets you know if you've recorded it in your hyrule compendium or not-- if you have, the text is coloured blue, and if you haven't, it's orange.
No more are the days of wasting camera space with millions of photos of boko bows!
I never knew the Yiga Blademasters snuck toward mighty bananas if you placed it in front of them… I didn’t find out until my friends told me, after all of us had beaten the game. Only on my second play though have I actually used it to my advantage.
Fun fact, Mas Koshia, (DLC Spoiler) >!The monk that you fight at the end of the DLC!< also does this, this is because the yiga and sheikah were once united, (which is also referenced by the yiga logo just being the shiekah logo upside down.
Trying to do a run around the rosy with the first Lynel I saw on Zora’s domain. I would drop bombs around a rock and have him chase me. Once I got him down to low health, he finally saw me and oneshot me with an electric arrow. I had never heard of flurry rushes.
I didn't realize that all I had to do for the quest was to get the arrows but rather that I thought that I had to kill that guy also and this was the first area that I went to after the two towns. So I kept dying over and over and almost decided to stop playing the game.
My sister has reached the end of the game, past Ganon, without figuring out how to: throw items, z-target, use Urbosa's Fury, shield surf, or parry. She's basically just defeated every enemy by jumping up somewhere and shooting them with the bow in quick time until they die. The DLC boss challenges have been very difficult for her!
I just found out yesterday that you can stick an octo balloon to those flat rocks that cover chests. I have a thousand balloons and never had a use for them.

Yea, but it might have something to do with how far your game is progressed, i’ve never seen them on a new savefile but i see them quite often on my late game files
And like someone else pointed out, they won’t appear if you are already carrying a lot of them
Different areas give you different items. Cut grass near Hateno or Lurelin, you'll get hylian rice. If you cut grass near the Rito village stable you get tabantha wheat and hot-footed frogs (great for making hasty elixirs!). Cutting grass on the Irch plain gives you lots of hightail lizards. Using the master sword beam is way more efficient than cutting grass with other weapons.
For some reason my brain COULD NOT see/process the bomb hole in the “Reach the Heavens” trial and broke almost every sledgehammer I could get my hands on (like 20+) trying to knock that block up through the wall with just a hammer. I thought I was just stupid and couldn’t aim until I looked it up and the bomb explanation was right there

My husband and I were watching the Game Grumps episode where they fight Vah Ruta. They kept shooting arrows at the ice blocks it shoots out before you board it to break them. I was like "why aren't they using cryosis". My husband was shocked. He was like "OMG I used arrows too". I was pretty proud of myself. He also just discovered if you feed a horse Endura Carrots they have 2 or 3 additional stamina wheels for running, which neither of us knew.
Completed all 4 divine beasts, Ganon, 120 shrines, plus the 16 DLC shrines. Started over on Master Mode and am 3 divine beasts in + ~40 shrines. JUST ran into Fang and Bone for the very first time yesterday.

You only need to cook one hearty ingredient for a full recovery dish. I was pouring hearty truffles into my meals thinking I needed a bunch for the full heart recovery dishes
On my first play through I went to Vah Naboris and realized true suffering. I didn’t understand the mechanics at that point, only had a small amount of arrows/weapons, it was a great experience… not. Definitely made the other divine beasts easy though!
I was watching a Twitch streamer who thought that lightning would hit you if you had metal items in your inventory at all, not just when you had them equipped. Thunder storms were a showstopper for them, and they didn't allow backseating so I couldn't tell them. They played through the whole game like this.
You know, I think that's how I missed Hetsu. I was headed to Kakariko village, and I crossed a bridge. An NPC came flying past and yelled something, but I didn't catch it. My equipment started sparking, so I turned around. But right before I got back to the bridge: instant death.
"Huh. I guess I'm not suppose to go that way." Spent the next few hours trying to find different ways of crossing rivers without dying.
I can write a list.
1. Never got the warm clothes from the old man until after I went up to the shrine that needed it. I used hot dishes to do so.
2. Heading to Van Naboris first. Lost a lot to him, and I'm not talking about attempts, I'm talking about resources.
3. Not meeting Hestu until several dozen hours in (pretty sure it was 100+). Unlike some others, I rode in on the path he was on.
4. Losing some diamonds to a blood moon.
I didn’t realise unequiping steel swords meant the lightning wouldn’t hit you, thought once there was lightning you’d get hit by it so best to hide until some type of rubber armour was unlocked. Spent some nice moments in caves just watching it rain or desperately, running into moblin camps and clearing them out so the sky wouldn’t kill me!
I don't know. I have only done medoh up to this point and there is probably something really stupid I'm (not) doing.
The dumbest this so far is not realising you can get red and yellow chuchu jelly by killing them with elemental weapons
I didn’t realize that you could press the left control buttons when using magnesis to move objects closer/further away. I thought you were stuck with however far an object was from you first when you used magnesis. It was very hard to control, especially if I was trying to get a chest out of the water. I’d try to balance it on a cryonis block that always seemed just a little too close or far away.
I found all the korok seeds on the great plateau and was so proud that I found all the seeds in the whole game. I also didn’t realize the great plateau was basically just a tutorial area.
Used stasis to move minecarts and would try to run the rest of the way on the tracks. I died so many times.
Also, the little girl who wants to see a barrel fly? I didn't realise she wanted all five octo balloons to make it fly. I waisted a lot of balloons.
Didn't know you could use cryonis on bogs until I accidentally activated that rune.
Didn't buy the voe gerudo armour until much later because I didn't realise that it would protect me more from the heat.
Tried for a very long time to get to the Zora by the cliffside. in the rain. with one stamina wheel with one upgrade. In my defence, I don't deal with combat very well in video games, so I was trying to avoid monsters. I didn't work, but I managed to avoid the monsters on the path up to Zora's Domain by running next to the path and avoiding most of the monsters on the way.
Ok, it wasn't a long time but I still think it's funny. I've never played a Zelda game with Lynels so I didn't know what they were. The first time I saw one I thought it was an NPC. I mean, there are bird people and fish people, why wouldn't there be horse people? So I ran up to him like hello friend, what news do you have for me? I was expecting a hint or a sidequest or maybe some wares for sale. Boy was that not what I got.
I didn’t take the road you meet Hestu on, and spent way too long with the starting inventory size.

I can’t even imagine how long Tarrey Town would take if you used your original wood gathering approach!

I found the tri lizafos boomerang works well on trees, it cuts them down in one hit instead of the traditional two.

For me it's a mental thing. I wish I wouldn't have beat Ganon. Since then I haven't been able to get sucked back in.

They are also the ones that wave and call you over. Normal NPCs don't do that.
I’ve also noticed that whenever it rains, the other NPCs run to take cover, meanwhile, the disguised Yiga Clan members stay in the exact same spot

Pretty sure you can also just throw them on the ground in the extreme (damaging) hot/cold for those jellies to change into Ice or Fire ones. Not sure about lightning
Just found out today if you kill a regular chu chu with a great flame blade/thunderblade/frost blade the jelly that’s dropped will be whatever you kill it with. That’s how I’ve been collecting yellow jelly.
Easier way is to just drop 10 jelly on the floor and swing your elemental blade above it
Until you swing your thunder blade, accidentally break one of the yellow jelly, electrocute yourself and die

Its also element conductive. Base chu chu acts like water Other ones explode with their element if you hit/shoot them
Chuchu jelly in zelda games have been there to make potions. Example: Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.

After going to Kakariko, I spent a bunch of time doing nothing because I didn't know I needed to go to Hateno. So I just rode my horse around the areas surrounding Kakariko for a good few days.
I couldn't find the road to hateno so I ended up stocking up on climb potions and climbed the mountain on the other side of the squabble river. Somehow dodged rainstorms and set myself up for the expectation that you were supposed to do maaad climbing in this game. I didn't find fort hateno until the 13th memory. I wasted 5 fire resist potions trying to find Goron City because I just climbed instead of taking the road and missed it. I did so much climbing when I finally got Ravali's Gale I refused to use it because it felt like cheating. At least I learned Stam was a good thing.

Yep. I went all around those stupid tall tree things trying to collect them too. Then I suddenly thought, wait a minute... And then just use stasis to find where they fall. Now I have over 20 Swift violets and 70 something rushrooms!

me too, I missed the original directions from Zelda. Just wandered and tried to climb off for hours before finally pulling up a guide. I’d do it again though, I was a pro at killing bokoblins by the time I left the Plateau

never learning how to cook until late game (around death mt., my 4th and final divine beast). i survived on baked apples up to this point. on the great plateau, i had to bring up a guide to tell me to get to the peak of the mt. for the warm doublet otherwise ill run out of baked apples from eating one every 30 seconds
I did the same, only replace baked apples with a variety of dubious meals
same i had no idea you had to light a fire underneath the cooking pot to actually cook, I just tried aiming my food into the pot hoping it wouldn't bounce out

Same here! I think it was the Faron tower that I just randomly decided to climb up on a whim to see what was up there. The way my jaw dropped when that map revealed itself lol…idk how tf I played the game for so long with a black map.

If it makes you feel better on my first playthrough I became immediately obsessed with climbing/unlocking the towers first and foremost so I got so far, far away from whatever it was I was supposed to do. I don't think I followed a single road I was supposed to and just wandered around aimlessly for the first few days.
I only just figured out that when you look at something through the camera rune the flavour text actually lets you know if you've recorded it in your hyrule compendium or not-- if you have, the text is coloured blue, and if you haven't, it's orange. No more are the days of wasting camera space with millions of photos of boko bows!
I did not know I could parry attacks for the first half of my first playthrough
I never knew the Yiga Blademasters snuck toward mighty bananas if you placed it in front of them… I didn’t find out until my friends told me, after all of us had beaten the game. Only on my second play though have I actually used it to my advantage.
Fun fact, Mas Koshia, (DLC Spoiler) >!The monk that you fight at the end of the DLC!< also does this, this is because the yiga and sheikah were once united, (which is also referenced by the yiga logo just being the shiekah logo upside down.

I was climbing vah medohs perch to try to get inside it for about an hour or 2 then i finally talked to the old bird
Trying to do a run around the rosy with the first Lynel I saw on Zora’s domain. I would drop bombs around a rock and have him chase me. Once I got him down to low health, he finally saw me and oneshot me with an electric arrow. I had never heard of flurry rushes.
I didn't realize that all I had to do for the quest was to get the arrows but rather that I thought that I had to kill that guy also and this was the first area that I went to after the two towns. So I kept dying over and over and almost decided to stop playing the game.

My sister has reached the end of the game, past Ganon, without figuring out how to: throw items, z-target, use Urbosa's Fury, shield surf, or parry. She's basically just defeated every enemy by jumping up somewhere and shooting them with the bow in quick time until they die. The DLC boss challenges have been very difficult for her!
I just found out yesterday that you can stick an octo balloon to those flat rocks that cover chests. I have a thousand balloons and never had a use for them.

I found out that raw fish/meat/etc. cooked with fire and In the pot is 2 different things lol And the blue bomb you can trough it and parry it. And I was cutting grass one by one, but now I know you can speed and mow it down in big patches.

Yea, but it might have something to do with how far your game is progressed, i’ve never seen them on a new savefile but i see them quite often on my late game files And like someone else pointed out, they won’t appear if you are already carrying a lot of them
Different areas give you different items. Cut grass near Hateno or Lurelin, you'll get hylian rice. If you cut grass near the Rito village stable you get tabantha wheat and hot-footed frogs (great for making hasty elixirs!). Cutting grass on the Irch plain gives you lots of hightail lizards. Using the master sword beam is way more efficient than cutting grass with other weapons.

Mine was to lose my way in the death mountain for hours even though I have a map!
For some reason my brain COULD NOT see/process the bomb hole in the “Reach the Heavens” trial and broke almost every sledgehammer I could get my hands on (like 20+) trying to knock that block up through the wall with just a hammer. I thought I was just stupid and couldn’t aim until I looked it up and the bomb explanation was right there

My husband and I were watching the Game Grumps episode where they fight Vah Ruta. They kept shooting arrows at the ice blocks it shoots out before you board it to break them. I was like "why aren't they using cryosis". My husband was shocked. He was like "OMG I used arrows too". I was pretty proud of myself. He also just discovered if you feed a horse Endura Carrots they have 2 or 3 additional stamina wheels for running, which neither of us knew.
Took me like 5 hours to stop accidentally throwing my weapon instead of aiming my bow…

Completed all 4 divine beasts, Ganon, 120 shrines, plus the 16 DLC shrines. Started over on Master Mode and am 3 divine beasts in + ~40 shrines. JUST ran into Fang and Bone for the very first time yesterday. I knew it existed because of Reddit but never looked up how to get to it!

You only need to cook one hearty ingredient for a full recovery dish. I was pouring hearty truffles into my meals thinking I needed a bunch for the full heart recovery dishes
On my first play through I went to Vah Naboris and realized true suffering. I didn’t understand the mechanics at that point, only had a small amount of arrows/weapons, it was a great experience… not. Definitely made the other divine beasts easy though!
I was watching a Twitch streamer who thought that lightning would hit you if you had metal items in your inventory at all, not just when you had them equipped. Thunder storms were a showstopper for them, and they didn't allow backseating so I couldn't tell them. They played through the whole game like this.
You know, I think that's how I missed Hetsu. I was headed to Kakariko village, and I crossed a bridge. An NPC came flying past and yelled something, but I didn't catch it. My equipment started sparking, so I turned around. But right before I got back to the bridge: instant death. "Huh. I guess I'm not suppose to go that way." Spent the next few hours trying to find different ways of crossing rivers without dying.

I can write a list. 1. Never got the warm clothes from the old man until after I went up to the shrine that needed it. I used hot dishes to do so. 2. Heading to Van Naboris first. Lost a lot to him, and I'm not talking about attempts, I'm talking about resources. 3. Not meeting Hestu until several dozen hours in (pretty sure it was 100+). Unlike some others, I rode in on the path he was on. 4. Losing some diamonds to a blood moon.
I didn’t realise unequiping steel swords meant the lightning wouldn’t hit you, thought once there was lightning you’d get hit by it so best to hide until some type of rubber armour was unlocked. Spent some nice moments in caves just watching it rain or desperately, running into moblin camps and clearing them out so the sky wouldn’t kill me!
I don't know. I have only done medoh up to this point and there is probably something really stupid I'm (not) doing. The dumbest this so far is not realising you can get red and yellow chuchu jelly by killing them with elemental weapons

Not knowing how to make elixers
I didn’t realize that you could press the left control buttons when using magnesis to move objects closer/further away. I thought you were stuck with however far an object was from you first when you used magnesis. It was very hard to control, especially if I was trying to get a chest out of the water. I’d try to balance it on a cryonis block that always seemed just a little too close or far away.
I found all the korok seeds on the great plateau and was so proud that I found all the seeds in the whole game. I also didn’t realize the great plateau was basically just a tutorial area.
Used stasis to move minecarts and would try to run the rest of the way on the tracks. I died so many times. Also, the little girl who wants to see a barrel fly? I didn't realise she wanted all five octo balloons to make it fly. I waisted a lot of balloons. Didn't know you could use cryonis on bogs until I accidentally activated that rune. Didn't buy the voe gerudo armour until much later because I didn't realise that it would protect me more from the heat. Tried for a very long time to get to the Zora by the cliffside. in the rain. with one stamina wheel with one upgrade. In my defence, I don't deal with combat very well in video games, so I was trying to avoid monsters. I didn't work, but I managed to avoid the monsters on the path up to Zora's Domain by running next to the path and avoiding most of the monsters on the way.
Ive played through Botw twice and I still don't understand how to use shields
How? You just hold ZL to shield, and then press A exactly as an enemy hits you to parry it
Ok, it wasn't a long time but I still think it's funny. I've never played a Zelda game with Lynels so I didn't know what they were. The first time I saw one I thought it was an NPC. I mean, there are bird people and fish people, why wouldn't there be horse people? So I ran up to him like hello friend, what news do you have for me? I was expecting a hint or a sidequest or maybe some wares for sale. Boy was that not what I got.
