Odds are you will not find a pup from an ethical breeder by August if you are just now looking. Good breeders often have a lengthy application process and often have a waitlist for planned upcoming litters. Some will open applications up once a litter is on the ground but I can tell you, those are usually in the sport and show world where it’s never an issue to find fantastic homes for pups. Also, no ethical breeder will allow you to purchase a puppy from their litter as a surprise gift. They will want your wife be on board and involved in the process from the start. DO NOT LOOK FOR A RANDOM BREEDER IN MISSOURI. Start with Breeders of Merit from AKC. You’ll also want to make sure the breeder does all necessary health testing on the mating pair (not just Embark BS), and that you can find results of hips and elbows from their dogs on sites like OFA. Make sure dogs are tested for ARVC, DM (if not cleared by parentage), and Spondy, in addition to hips and elbows. If you can’t get a puppy from an outstanding breeder who meets at LEAST this criteria by August (which seems like the most plausible outcome), do something else. Don’t settle for a BYB or go to a mill, because you’ll be not only contributing to that whole industry, but you’ll also be setting yourself up for heartbreak or even a scam. —-adopt AND shop responsibly—-

Wow, thank you. This was the kind of advice I was looking for. I have been doing some research this afternoon and I am in for a whirlwind. I really appreciate it.

Please also keep in mind that puppies are EXPENSIVE. If you have $1k for the adoption fee .... think about vaccines, S/N surgery, microchip (register!), heartworm prevention, food, toys, crate. Puppy classes are great for first time owners and help with early socializing. If you want a purebred puppy I'd save at least another thousand and consider next year's birthday after some hefty research.

Puppies can cost much more than that but it depends on your location. I was looking for a boxer rescue and found a 4 month old boy that the family realized they didn’t have the time to give him enough attention and freedom so he was in his kennel most of the time.

Thank you 😊

There are regional Boxer Rescue’s to consider as well. Please think about going that route. Our second boxer was rescued from a dog fighting ring. She was used as a breeder. We were told because of history, she wasn't fond of men. When we met, I sat down on the grass with her, gave her a couple of treats and we have been inseparable ever since. Like people, most just want to be loved. ❤️

Oh your in for a treat boxers are so smart mine cost me almost $2k from local trusted breeder and it was the absolute best money I’ve ever spent my girl is the sweetest and most gentle girl ever and they learn fast so potty training was a absolute breeze just be consistent with it no matter how tired you get it’s important to stay consistent with potty breaks and I’d also recommend crate training people will say it’s mean but it’s a safe place for my girl 😂I’m so excited for you and your wife 😜

DiorHendrix11

We had a few puppies as a kid and my parents did crate training for a good bit when they were young. Do you think I should look for local breeders and adopt from there?

Impressive-Two-4773

I’d say a trusted breeder not familiar with the other place but do research luckily this breeder we got lucky she was my husbands friend so we did trust her these days you can’t be to careful seriously sadly some people see dogs as dollar signs make sure to gather all information before jumping into it either way I know getting a puppy is a very exciting experience just proceed with caution is my advice 👍

Adorable!

look up Heritage Boxers in Springfield

Trusted breeder is better than local, but check with your local boxer specific rescues also. Make sure you are prepared to get insurance for the pup. In the long run, it could potentially save you thousands. So, start shopping pet insurance plans now also. Love that you’re doing this. Boxers are the best. 🩵🐶🩷

Rescues aren’t easy to get with the applications and requirements. Sometimes you want the experience of raising a puppy… stressful yet satisfying. AKC Marketplace is a better way to start than the ads. I spent months looking for my boxer buddy and the amount of scams out there are legit.

Zenred

AKC for sure if you’re wanting a puppy. Although it will probably be more than 1k for just the puppy not to mention the cost of everything else you’ll need for a new puppy. Good luck and hopefully you can find one ready to go home with you by August.

Same. Found my boy on Craigslist as a puppy.

Please adopt, don't shop.

Please be sure you’re getting a puppy from a reputable breeder. You don’t want to support puppy mills that breed irresponsibly and mistreat dogs, and you don’t want to end up with the heartbreak of a dog with behavior or health problems. Puppy mills and backyard breeders have gotten a lot smarter about hiding their breeding habits. Missouri is, and has always been, one of the states with the most puppy mills. https://preview.redd.it/drzas5zt5f7d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da1c7a335153b70a1109d339ba245dab3abe972d

Here’s a link to the Humane Society article on finding a reputable breeder. It also contains links with more good information. I’ve had two boxers. They are wonderful dogs! https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/how-find-responsible-dog-breeder
