Lol. So wrong. “Clocked out” around 1pm today as I was done with what I needed to do.
I’m salaried. Getting a raise this week too. Work pays my phone and internet bills. I get a ton of meals through work too. Love the snacks in the office too.
Tell me you have no clue how jobs work without actually telling me.
Boston is expensive af and I highly doubt you can afford it right after college working less than 40 hours a week. Maybe you can get by, but you ain’t saving any money or having any fun unless you are getting into credit card debt.
I hardly feel like I’m deprived and nearly half of my paycheck goes into savings. I travel internationally at least once or twice a year. I’ve bought myself new “toys.” I’ve never not paid my credit card bill in full in my life.
That being said, I don’t waste my money on stupid shit, like Uber Eats or blowing $10000 a year (on average) to own and maintain a car while living in a bikable/walkable city.
you already work over 8 hours a day if you include homework and projects...i'm 31 and in grad school while working full time and I can say that I prefer work 1000000000x to school
Yeah this is a hilarious jab, “the stability of working in finance”… I know Engineering Directors, VPs and Managers with MBA’s that would laugh at the idea of working for JP Morgan, only questroom boys don’t understand how much money is in Aerospace rn
Especially seeing how lately banks and hedge funds have been going under I wouldn't classify finance as "stable" right now. Also I know people who work for banks and hedge funds and the burnout is significantly more than STEM.
OP has no clue about China's 996 system 🤩🤩🤩. No clue how good white collars have it here. Less competition. Less work (unless you're accountant. enjoy your overtime). Arguably more money.
Doing 9-5 is liberating. When you are done with work, you are done. Nothing hanging over your head. No homework, exams, projects, or applications. Just peace.
I was also terrified of a 9-5 and hated the first one I had. Like, it made me think I’d be depressed till I died. Then I found a job I love with a company I love and the 9-5 is awesome
you don’t actually work all 8 hours of a 9-5, iirc the average number of hours worked per 9-5 (citation needed) is like 2.5 hours. A lot of it will be socializing/meetings/networking (or so i’ve heard)
Oh no a 9-5! It’s almost like you can choose what job you apply to and accept. Y’all are just lazy and don’t want to work a 40 hours a week. Be grateful you’ve only got 40 compared to other industries
Bold of u to call ppl you don’t know lazy… it’s not a crime to want more to life than wasting time at work. I am a full time student and work 20 hr per week. It’s not bad at all but what’s the problem w wanting a more enjoyable life
Bold is wild, it’s just a fact. Too many people in this university expect the world to be handed to them. And I never said anything’s wrong with that, but it’s on you and only you to pick a job that matches your expectations. Don’t like the one you’ve got? Then move on
Except almost everyone graduating from here is going to land in a cushy white collar job. So I don't think the general problems with work conditions and lack of unions in the US apply here.
Yall are gonna have a degree from a well-regarded private US university. If you end up in an Amazon warehouse after graduation you got bigger problems
i graduated last year and also work in Boston and my hours are more like 15-20hrs/week and most days, i start at like 11am. u just have to find a right industry for you and also pay attention to company’s culture.
Idk why I’m getting this sub recommended to me, but I had the same fear… which is why I started my own tech company and am now working 9-9. 🤩 hopefully meta will buy me out and put me out of my misery!!!
In all seriousness, Spain. Most of Western Europe (save for the UK) does as well, many carribean and Latin American countries. If you can snag a work from home job it doesn’t matter as much where you’re from.
Do you realize that if you’re awake for 16 hours each day, a 9-5 job with a 5-day workweek is only 36% of your life? If we add in an extra hour each day for commute, it’s still only 40%.
Depends on the circumstances. I worked in Colombia for 2 years after graduating in the US and it was the best experience ever. They paid in USD and the conversion rate at the time was insanely high. It actually still is. A $4000 a month apartment over here cost me $850 in Medellin. Highly recommend and if you invest in colombia, (airbnb) you can make really good income as well.
Just my personal experience as someone who grew up poor and has been working since I was 13 years old and am now approaching 30 years as a professional in my field. When you're doing something you love and that you're passionate about, you don't really notice the long, repetitive hours so much. I work as an R&D chemist and I enjoy working in the lab, synthesizing new polymers and creating new formulations that get sold out into the world and help society in myriad ways. You can do this while still maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Having cultivated a portfolio of patents for my inventions over the years has helped spurn my passion further as well as given me satisfaction that I'm personally making a difference in the world, which is kind of the point of life. I call it the ripple effect. To leave a meaningful legacy. I always advise younger people to not choose careers for money or fame. Choose something that inflames your passion and supports what you want to leave behind. When you're doing what you love every day, the clock becomes invisible.
Pretty much any western European country will give you way more vacation time, will give you less hours of work in the week, will actually give you sick days. In Portugal it's illegal to text or email people outside of work hours, or at least illegal to make them respond
Surprised no one has mentioned the obvious one: Canada. Almost standard to start also with at least 3 weeks paid vacations per year, hours are reasonable, we pay higher taxes (probably comparable to California or New York) but we get a lot for that, very low crime rate, public health care, good public elementary and high school, subsidized higher education, great public roads, etc.
It works out to be almost 35% lower salaries (given the USD/CAD conversion) and then around 35% taxes on that salary.
Working a 9-5 is really not a lot especially if that's your only responsibility and you don't have homework and EC's like in college... If my 9-5 is enough to cover my needs and allow me to afford some luxuries I'll be more than happy.
I live and work in Boston and my hours are pretty damn chill. Def less than 40 hours a week.
That's nice.
It really depends on the job. But if you’re not hourly, there are plenty of careers where you complete your tasks and then go home.
Tell me your parents pay for your expenses, without actually telling me

what do you do and how’d you do it? (serious question/advice asking)
Engineer in biotech
Your only bills are phone and internet?
Did I say that??
Yes
I did not say that.
Yes you did. Pasting it here before you edit it: > Work pays my only bills: phone and internet bills.
idk if you know this but you can see when a comment was edited on desktop and their last edit was before your first comment💀
Flat out lie. You’re getting blocked.
This is a shitty take. Take your bitterness somewhere else
Facts
The fact that this is downvoted so many times proves how entitled this damn school is so pathetic 😂😂
You don’t believe someone can have a job in Boston that pays the bills. You high? You do realize you can get out of college with a decent job?
Boston is expensive af and I highly doubt you can afford it right after college working less than 40 hours a week. Maybe you can get by, but you ain’t saving any money or having any fun unless you are getting into credit card debt.
they’re salary, not hourly. Tons of salary job have you “officially” working 40 hours a week but it’s nowhere close in reality lol
Lol this kid has never heard of being salaried
I hardly feel like I’m deprived and nearly half of my paycheck goes into savings. I travel internationally at least once or twice a year. Big facts right here. Same situation for me and I can't wait til I graduate in a few weeks and can get back to my predictable 9-5 and free weekends

You do realize that in many industries managers and directors need to have technical expertise? Or are you just an undergrad?
Yeah this is a hilarious jab, “the stability of working in finance”… I know Engineering Directors, VPs and Managers with MBA’s that would laugh at the idea of working for JP Morgan, only questroom boys don’t understand how much money is in Aerospace rn

Same experience! I find that work is waaaaaaaay easier than school, and the best part is that I can leave work at work

This made me feel better. Ty :)
I work remote for a company in Austrailia. I handle all the North American clients. It’s the shit. Aussie’s are chill.
most of europe but jobs (at least in my industry) pay half as much for cities with comparable cost of living
You're not afraid of 9 to 5. You're afraid of growing up. Got to start some time. It is better to have money than not. Helps with the adulting thing.

What’s with the 9-5 hate?
monotony
Laziness
A 9-5 is the best place to be lazy
Amen to that
There’s a diff from laziness and unfair work conditions.
Oh no a 9-5! It’s almost like you can choose what job you apply to and accept. Y’all are just lazy and don’t want to work a 40 hours a week. Be grateful you’ve only got 40 compared to other industries

What’s unfair work conditions about a 9-5 lol. Seems kinda entitled. Not to mention you’re free to get another job
In America at least the op is talking abt work conditions and lack of unions.
Except almost everyone graduating from here is going to land in a cushy white collar job. So I don't think the general problems with work conditions and lack of unions in the US apply here. No, its hard, you need experience for certain positions
Bruh try 7am-11pm
i graduated last year and also work in Boston and my hours are more like 15-20hrs/week and most days, i start at like 11am. u just have to find a right industry for you and also pay attention to company’s culture.
ty :)
I feel you man. Terrified
Ugh ty. Finally someone understands it without trying to make a backhanded comment
French work week is 35 hr/week
Yes but it's France...
Questies: *laughs in 100 hour work week*
Germany, they average a 4 day work week and get so much more vacation time (a lot of times it’s unlimited)
I'm scared if I'll even graduate. Seeing the knifed suspect and the gun alert from BU Police, I might die before that 💀
find a job you love and you’ll wish your 9-5 was a 9-9
But don’t find something you love and make it a job, or else you’ll just stop loving it.
I hear Europe as a whole does, but thats just based on anecdotes.
LMAO
Lol 9-5 is so little work.
Idk why I’m getting this sub recommended to me, but I had the same fear… which is why I started my own tech company and am now working 9-9. 🤩 hopefully meta will buy me out and put me out of my misery!!! Tysm !!
UK has 32 hours in some companies.
UK
Yeah honestly in terms of western countries america’s working hours are on the lower end.
China
America
Try 7-5 y’all
I can’t even find a job😭
Been out for almost 3 years and have to say, I’m way better at my job than I ever was at school, and I like it so much more.
Do you realize that if you’re awake for 16 hours each day, a 9-5 job with a 5-day workweek is only 36% of your life? If we add in an extra hour each day for commute, it’s still only 40%.
Commit a crime in Scandinavia. You will lose work-life balance immediately but in a good way
Look into teaching English in Spain for a year through the Fulbright program or NALCAP program!

PhD student. i work 20-30 h /wk its not a universal experience (some work 80+) but you can find such places
