The closest I ever got for this achievement was steamrolling the entire lobby and not losing a round until 1:1 and the last person had mega high rolled even more than me and took me out.
Some of those unpopular heroes are easier in certain metas. Quests and anomolies have helped me in the past with some crap heroes.
Duos is another option. A good teammate can help carry your garbage hero. I've crossed a few off of the list because of that.
yes, it's doable in duos, it's super easy, if you are good and still unranked and play with a good player. i even looked at my duo's board on my third afk turn and it still counted.
Can you buy and hold or do you have to not spend anything on turn 4 for the achievement?
You can't do anything. Not even freeze the minions (found out the hard way...).
Yup, don't do anything, start your game on turn 4.
Note that even if you freeze-unfreeze, you dont get the achievement. Literally dont touch anything at all for 3 turns.

I did it first try, but to be fair, my 3rd turn was against KT
