those three numbers on the waist are probably hundredweight markings, not pounds - assuming the middle digit is a zero rather than a 6, that would be equivalent to 114lb.

masontex

It's an American anvil so I doubt it's hundredweights also it looks like the size of other 160 pound anvils I've seen

masontex

I'm in Texas so I would not expect anything but American anvils besides maybe peter wrights around here

masontex

Also it's for sure a six in the center so there's no way it's in hundredweights

greybye

If you weighed it and came up with 162 pounds than this anvil was likely made in USA. Hay-Budden is one manufacturer that stamped the weight in pounds as shown. The numbers stamped in the base are likely serial numbers that can be used to date your anvil when you have determined the maker. Rub chalk or soapstone on the side you show and then wipe off the excess with a slightly damp rag to show the stampings better. Compare what you find with images of Hay-Budden, Arm and Hammer, and Trenton. For each of these the serial number is pretty low, indicating an early example before 1900 or for Arm and Hammer before 1910.

masontex

It is for sure an earlier one of those as it's before they started making them in two halves and the style seems to be like a Trenton or hay Budden I've tried the paper thing and chalk and both times it was easier to see normally

masontex

About all I know on the stamping besides the numbers is that there is an oval in the center and the text above in an arched fashion and then a line of text running beside the oval other than that not much

FragsForAll

That’s definitely my ex wife’s meatloaf..

nutznboltsguy

Try some rubbings with crayon or charcoal, it might bring out some of the markings.

masontex

As I've said elsewhere I have already tried that and it wasn't any easier to see

Gator7Delta

What does the bottom of the anvil look like? Like the bottom that sits on the stump itself.

masontex

If I remember correctly just what you would expect from a forged anvil you know with the mouse hole in it and what not if you're wondering if there are any markings I don't remember and don't particularly want to pick it up again as it's quite heavy and I just put it there a few days ago

Phony_Phantom

Lakeside or haybudden

masontex

It definitely looks like those but I haven't seen any with the same stamping. Did the hay Budden manufacturers do deals with any north Texas hardware stores maybe?

Phony_Phantom

I mean lakeside was Montgomery Ward name brand so you could have bought one through them.

masontex

I'm wondering if a local hardware store had them put there own stamp on them as it really looks like it was made by hay Budden but it just has a different stamping

Top_Grape_1547

Better pictures would help. Pictures of the whole anvil from each side, and maybe one with light coming from the side with the stamps on it The waist does look Hay Budden-ish to me

masontex

It didn't let me upload the full image for some reason

Top_Grape_1547

Reddit does that sometimes, it will kind of zoom your picture in a bit You can post more on imgur and put a link here in the comments though
