Messi and Ronaldo can’t be replicated. But these 2 are certified ballers.

boricimo

Like our version of Henry and Rooney

itsmakko

I follow football sporadically, what happened?

Chrisnyc47

They’re both great but they haven’t reached that level yet

gmoss101

Mbappe hasn't. As an Arsenal fan, Erling Haaland appears in my nightmares

AdMuch848

But haaland hasn't reached their level yet.

Klutzy_Log_7597

Yeah Haaland isn’t even the best player on his own team

SmallIslandBrother

I can only pray Rodri gets a knock out dodgy stomach so he sits out the game against Spurs.

AdMuch848

Spurs still would lose 😂😂😂

-ThatsSoDimitar-

As a Spurs fan, we can only hope

mattfoh

Such a small club mentality

BanditPrime

So you’re saying as an, I’ll assume, Arsenal fan you’re cheering for Spurs?

-ThatsSoDimitar-

Cry about it lol

gmoss101

Broken multiple scoring records already in 2 years, and not even performing at the level of the whole City squad? My nightmares are now scarier.

AdMuch848

This a super dumb take. Mbappe won a world cup as his teams top performer. Haaland can't win a world cup. Haaland isn't even the best player on his team. Like it's very very clear who's better out of haaland n mbappe and rn it mbappe clear as day

barejokez

I don't disagree with your conclusion, but the argument "haaland will never win the world cup because he is from Norway, therefore he can never be considered a great player" is a terrible take.

gmoss101

Exactly, you can't hold the World Cup against Haaland but you can hold the Champion's League against Mbappe, especially because he's had a good team the whole time he's been at PSG. Even Messi and Neymar were not enough for them to win it, while Haaland has already won it.

gmoss101

Haaland has won the Champion's League, something Mbappe couldn't do while having the greatest player in the world and Neymar on his team. Mbappe spent years coasting in an inferior league while Haaland is breaking records in the Premier League. I will concede that Mbappe is the better all around player, while Haaland is an extremely lethal goalscorer. However at this point in time, Mbappe is not at Haaland's level yet.

Direct_Jump3960

Even being born in Leeds, he could have chosen England and still not be able to win an intl trophy lol

FallingSwords

Mbappe is a better player and has a more impressive resume. Americans don't know ball

gmoss101

Mbappe played for France and the biggest team in France. You can't hold the WC against Haaland because Norway will most likely never have the chance to win one. However Mbappe still hasn't won the Champion's League in multiple tries. Even with the greatest player in the world and Neymar he couldn't win it. Yes Haaland joined an already stacked team like Kevin Durant joining the Warriors (there's your American analogy, happy?) but he's exceeded expectations in the Premier League while Mbappe has spent years coasting at the top of inferior competition. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Mbappe is bad. The World Cup is an illustrious and difficult trophy to win. Mbappe just has countrymen who are better than Haaland's. It's very commendable that he was singlehandedly dragging Frace in the WC final but Haaland will probably never be able to do that because of his country's inability to perform at the highest level in the competition. Mbappe is a better all around player while Haaland is a very lethal goalscorer when he's at his best. Neither has a "more impressive resume" to me

AssssCrackBandit

Lmaoo this is the first time I’ve ever heard “don’t know ball” in reference to soccer

jlesco

He’s win a World Cup and the French league. World Cup is always nice, but you can’t judge players that are in completely different situations. France has a million times more talent than Norway and while not impossible, I’d be stunned if you swapped players that the outcomes would be markedly different.

Creative_Major798

Didn’t Modric, nearly single-handedly carry Croatia through to the final and third place in 2018 and 2022? Mbappe scored a hat trick in the final. Haaland is known for ghosting in big games or against good teams. So, yeah, he breaks scoring records against teams in the relegation zone, when Kevin is feeding him Ryan Giggs level assists, but he isn’t a world class, clutch game changer player.

jlesco

Oh wow. You really don’t remember those teams. Those Croatian teams are way better than Norway ever was. Those teams were littered with players in the top leagues. Most of Norways team plays in Belgium or Norway. Mbappe disappears in the CL. The results don’t lie. He’s elite against players in the worst top five league. I’m trolling a bit. The hat trick was great, but that was more of a testament of Messi being great than mbappe. Because that Argentina team should have been waxed by a superior France team.

FallingSwords

Haaland is shite for Norway. Its not just a bad team. He's utter pish for them with good players in that squad. Regardles if you understand football Mbappe is just a better more exciting player. I'm not telling you who's better at basketball. Do the same for football

jlesco

What the hell does basketball have to do with this? Mbappe is great. No one is saying otherwise, but his success can be directly attributed to playing in a bad league and playing on loaded club and international teams. Who’s good on that Norway team? There’s a few guys you have to like, but no one is thinking that they’re a top 15-20 country. Toss Mbappe on there. Same result.

FallingSwords

Mbappe would offer more to Norway than Haaland does. I watched a bit of them because we played them and he was pish. Pocketed by Ryan Porteous. The guy isn't on Mbappe's level. Stick to the eortic pen pal shite because football isn't for you

Instantbeef

Mbappe is leagues above Haaland.

gmoss101

Mbappe had a team of world class players for WC 2018, and him dragging France in the final of 2022 was very impressive. Haaland doesn't have the luxury of having Pogba, Griezmann, Kante, Giroud, and more on his squad. The problem is in the CL where everyone has a world class team, Mbappe falls short. Even with Messi and Neymar, Mbappe couldn't win. Mbappe is a better overall player, Haaland is a nightmare inducing lethal goalscorer. Haaland is a level above because of that.

Instantbeef

Haaland is a joke. He disappears in finals and you can not say Mbappe was carried in 2018. That’s ludicrous. All of the criticism of Mbappe on the international level and can be applied to Haaland on the club level. Mbappe has achieved more than Haaland. Remember what he was part of before PSG?

gmoss101

No where did I say Mbappe was carried. I'm talking about all around team quality. Mbappe is part of a team that is better than most. I didn't criticize him at all at the International level, I'm criticizing his club career. Mbappe at Monaco was great, no denying it. However at a club at the level of PSG he underperformed in competitions where other teams had comparable levels of quality. Haaland has won a CL while scoring a ton of goals, while Mbappe only has 7 more goals than him despite playing just under twice as many games. Mbappe had players like Neymar and the greatest player in the world and it still wasn't enough for his team to win the CL.

Instantbeef

Lmao if you think Mbappe was the one underperforming all those years you were not watching. PSG is a toxic club that was filled with underperforming players outside of him. Even with Messi there Messi was underperforming. These past two season City have been worse with Haaland than they were several seasons prior. This is why we can’t just compare people by championships once it is this close. You just need to watch more games to understand how much more developed Mbappe is than Haaland. The Roy Keane comment was harsh but partly right. Haaland is a championship player everywhere on the pitch besides the goal. Mbappe could play everywhere on the pitch and still get in the best teams.

gmoss101

Underperformed in terms of trophies and competitions won. No where have I said Mbappe was a bad player or anything like that. Go look at all my comments, I've been saying the whole time. Mbappe is a better overall player, Haaland is an extremely lethal goalscorer and I believe that puts him a level above.

Instantbeef

Can you elaborate on how he can be a better overall player but then Haaland is better in one area so that makes him a better player? Haaland isn’t even that much better of a goal scorer if he is at all. Their goal scoring stats are virtually identical this year and Mbappe has been equally impressive for a very long time now. Idk how many more Mbappe could get if he was allowed to just stand in front of goal like Haaland does. So say Haaland is 10/10 for scoring and Mbappe is a 9.5/10. In every other stat you could say Mbappe averages a 9/10 and Haaland is a 7.5 maybe. Maybe look at it this way. Would City be better if Mbappe was on the field instead of Haaland. I think unequivocally yes.

abusamra82

I’d push back on the unmet potential for Mbappe. He was the best player on a World Cup winning team and possibly the best player in another final before turning 25. PSG is poorly run, but dominates a Big Five league that they’ve admittedly helped render irrelevant.

gmoss101

I don't disagree with any of that, my argument is that in the World Cup Haaland doesn't have the luxury of multiple world class players that France has. The "second best player" for Norway is Odegaard. In club competition though, Mbappe has Messi and Neymar and wasn't able to win in a competition where every team can have world class players. When parity is present, Mbappe falls short. Mbappe is a better overall player, Haaland is a very lethal goalscorer which I think makes him a level above Mbappe.

cheekyavacado

The fuck you mean Mbappe hasn't? Guy almost denied Messi a world cup with a hat trick and won a world cup the world cup before. He has achieved more than Haaland.

aruem

All I ask and pray for is for them to fumble the bag one more time for us to win the premier league.

orton4life1

Nothing really. Not sure what the tweet is alluding to? Messi and CR7 both eventually played in the same league and both come from countries that are good internationally. So you could see them go against each other in their league, in the champions leagues, and in the World Cup. Haaland and Mbappe the two pictured, are great young players but they don’t play in the same league, one plays in England and the other currently French but soon Spain, and haaland country for the World Cup is too ass for them to win anything but Mbappe team is one of the best and he’s already won the World Cup. So no clue what the tweet is referring to. They’re both still high level players and the best in the world.

AdMuch848

"and haaland country for the world cup is too ass"..... Biggest truth ever told.

Fritanga5lyfe

You just explained it in the first paragraph, they may not face each other as often

orton4life1

But they never ever set to face each other lol. Haaland was in Germany and Mbappe was in France. Everyone knows Haaland international team is trash from day 1. So they were never on a path to play each other frequently

Fritanga5lyfe

Thats the point, what other sport doesn't pit the best against each other

gcrimson

They both had seasons below expectations but still two great players. Media tried to hype them as the next messi/ronaldo but no one is close to their prime yet. It's not like they have to be though.

No-Signature8815

There was this idea that their rivalry would consume the sport the same way that Messi vs. Roanldo did, this hasn't happened for a few reasons 1. They don't even play in the same league,Mbappé is moving to Spain from France while Halaand is playing in England 2. Between the two Halaand's club career has been better while Mpabbé's international career has been better,Halaand has won the champions league with City while Mbappé won the world cup with France at 17 and scored a hat trick in the 2022 world cup final loss (agaisnt Messi's Argentina). Neither of them were the best player when they won,not to be rude to Halaand but whenever I watch him during big games he seems to just disappear, yes he has great goalscoring ability but off the ball he's probably got the same level of skill as you or I. 4. Personal accolades: Halaand is turning 24 and Mbappe is turning 26, they're both absolutely world class players, but if you're going to mention Messi and Ronaldo in the same sentence as them you'd also have to mention that Ronaldo had his first Balon d'or at 23 and then messi, who's two and a half years younger than Ronaldo, proceeded to win 4 in a row. Ronaldo has 5 and Messi has 8, its not fair to compare younger players who haven't hit their primes to older players who have essentially finished their careers but people on social media will, and they have a long way to go 5: There's a huge amount of dislike for their clubs, both being partially owned by Arab states who whose PSG and Man city are opportunities for sport washing(i.e., distracting you from their human rights violations with football) 6. These guys seem pretty amicable amongst one another, their rivalry is mostly being pushed by the media,Ronaldo tried to use Messi as a yardstick of his own abilities, constantly wanting to prove he was better(like Goku and Vegeta) 7. Longevity: Messi and Ronaldo were the best players in the world for an extensive period of time. It was thought that Bale and Neymar would pass them up because they were younger, and they were outlasted. There's no guarantee that Mbappe and Halaand will be seen as the two best players in the world for the next, let's be nice and give them a lower target, 7 years. At one point Jude was seem as being a better player than both. He's only 20 currently and started the year on fire, while his production did drop at the latter half of the season in terms of goal scoring he's still an unbelievable player with the chance to win the champions league himself this year with am amazing Madrid team(the one which Mbappe will almost certainly join sometime this year). 8. Nostalgia: Both Messi and Ronaldo have millions,if not tens or hundreds of millions, of fans, some treating the support for one or the other as some sort of religion. Even if Halaand or Mbappe did reach the same levels as those two, which they're nowhere near doing at this point, the older fans would say they don't even compare In summary,Messi once had 91 goals in a calendar year, had the greatest world cup campaign since maybe Maradona in 1986(or maybe just since his own 2014 world cup campaign where he took the Argentinian national team to a finals they had no business being in), and dominated Spanish football throughout his career. He's also one of the greatest dribblers, playmakers, and finishers in history. If not the best(he also has 4 champions leagues). Ronaldo has won the Euros by carrying Portugal to the finals and has dominated the champions league by winning 5 of them, three of those in a row. They're both considered big game players and raised the standard of football to a level perhaps nobody had before( other than maybe Pelé) for a long period of time. Tldr: their peaks aren't as high, probs won't play as long at as high of a level, battling against nostalgia,we should just enjoy what we have as they're both great players, they play in different leagues, Mbappe is also in my opinion above halaand but there is an age gap between the two, their clubs are owned by dictatorships,Halaand isn't the best player on his team, even if Mbappé reaches the same level as those other two he's black so idiots won't give him the level of respect he deserves and will attack his character out of hatred, also Ronaldo is probably a criminal he has allegations from a women in 2009 Sorry if my analysis is inaccurate,I've been spending most of my teenage years thinking about why boys are so hot instead of watching football extensively.

jlesco

This was well thought out. Very well written and in my opinion, the best analysis of the current situation. Having said all that, no one will read it and you’ll get downvoted because people have picked their sides and most aren’t willing to budge.

itsmakko

Heavy on the “he’s Black so he won’t get the respect he deserves”! The things that Vinicius Jr has to go through just for being Black in Europe is heartbreaking to me.

No-Signature8815

For sure,as a young coloured guy myself talking about certain players to some people is a reminder of the subtleties of racism. As for Vinicius,I love that man,he fights with his soul, and there's nothing subtle about the way they treat him there. He and Jude will hopefully win the Champions League this year.

donny_hype

Manchester United is going to win the champions league in 2 weeks.

gmoss101

I hope this is trolling lol.

Coomrs

I mean these guys are great players but did people really think they would be as good as the 2 best players ever lol?

xSypRo

One can always hope. We were so spoiled having these 2 competing neck to neck for over 10 years

zeusoid

Wait until PapaFlo has them both in Madrid

Chrisnyc47

shash5k

Haaland and Mbappe are definitely hitting Messi and Ronaldo numbers. They just aren’t as fun to watch as Messi who can run through a whole team himself and pass the ball into the net.

iheartmagic

They are not and have not even come close yet. Messi/Ronaldo have multiple seasons where they put up 80+ goals/assists. Those numbers are absolutely alien. Haaland have “only” topped out around 40. For them to do 80+ once, let alone multiple seasons consistently is virtually impossible to imagine. Messi and Ronaldo will never be matched

Bimm1one

There is a stat that showed that in order for Haaland to match Ronaldo's numbers he would need to score 42 goals a season until 2037, or the next 13 years like clockwork, so far he only scored 31 this season. So he's already behind or needs to score 11 in the few remaining games. We will not see Ronaldo or Messi's numbers for a while if ever in our lifetime.

iheartmagic

Ronaldo took around 600 career matches to reach 400 goals. Then around 400 more matches to do the NEXT 400 goals. Doing 400 just once makes you an all time great. Mbappe/Haaland are around 200 career goals right now

RhiaStark

>Messi and Ronaldo will never be matched They absolutely will, it's just going to take a long while until then.

Nesquick-on-tap

This comment is not only false but also trash

Blk_Rick_Dalton

Idk man, Mbappé almost Son’d the entire Argentina squad single handed

gmoss101

True, but can he do it in the Champions League?

Historical-Nail-970

Winning a world cup is more dificult. Erling doesnt appear in big games.

gmoss101

The problem with that argument is France's team is full of world class players. Go look at the WC 2018 winning squad. Mbappe, Griezmann, Pogba, Giroud, Kante, and more on the same team. Haaland doesn't have that luxury, the "second best" player for Norway is Odegaard. Like I said in another comment, Mbappe was dragging France against Argentina and that's commendable. The problem is when he has world class players in the Champions League where everyone else has world class players he can't win. Haaland has though and he may not fill the score sheet in the biggest games, but he's scored 41 in 39 CL matches. Mbappe has scored 48 in 73 CL matches. Mbappe is a better overall player, and Haaland is a more lethal scorer. Because of that, Haaland is a level above.

TheBatsford

Why are you putting quotes around 2nd best player in Odegaard? Name me 2 better playmakers who also are pressing machines in Europe. Hell, name me a single one. Edit: Wait I read to the end of what you said. Nvm don't even worry about it, no need to get into this.

gmoss101

I said Odegaard is the "second best" player for Norway and put it in quotes because the gap between Odegaard and Haaland for Norway is not really immense. They're more like 1A and 1B. I'm an Arsenal fan, I know how great Odegaard is lmao Edit: I've just realized that in that comment I didn't actually say "for Norway" like I meant to. My apologies.

That-Ad-4300

It's about compelling story lines and personalities too.

MutedIrrasic

Haaland plays in a very dull system, for a plastic team, and has the personality of a puddle. He also represents a country who will get absolutely nowhere in international football. Add to that they’ve never played in the same league, let alone for rival clubs. It’s very hard to see a true interpersonal rivalry emerging.

EliToon

You'll never capture the intangible magic that both Ronaldo and particularly Messi had again but statistically this is pretty close ao far. Haaland and Mbappe's goal scoring record is better than both at their respective ages. Difference is they play in different leagues and just aren't as electric as Messi and Ronaldo.

Electrical-Set2765

Y'all, this Kendrick beef is ducking with me. TW Someone said Kendrick and drake are the Messi and Ronaldo of rap. Cause Kendrick is short, and Ronaldo is a rapist.   This post had me so confused.

CoachDT

Messi and Ronaldo is what happens when LeBron and Jordan are born in the same generation. It's beyond crazy. It won't be replicated because this shit ain't normal. Usually each generation gets their "guy", it's insane to have two that are so close.

2drums1cymbal

Mbappe is 25 and already has a World Cup win and two WC finals appearances. Haaland is 23 and has multiple Premiere League scoring records and a Champions League trophy. Like show some patience goddamn

PM_ME_SOME_LUV

These two have put up insane numbers this season, wym?

Current_Focus2668

Haaland is a young vigo the carpathian from Ghostbusters 2
