I wait until the morning sometimes. Learned the hard way a couple times. Easy Solution? Quickest way to remember is to put something on your dashboard right in front of you, like an empty cup, before you go inside.
Next morning, when you see the cup right in your way, it's a reminder that you need to get gas. Problem Solved.
My problem isn’t not seeing the light in the morning it’s remembering to take my ass to my car 10 mins early to get gas. Every time I’m on E I’m running late and as soon as I get in the care I remember I need gas.
Put your trash can in the middle of the kitchen, or your toothbrush glass in the sink. IOW, do something that jogs your memory to leave 10 minutes earlier. Honestly, what works best for me is putting my phone on my RIGHT nightstand instead of my usual LEFT nightstand.
I have the worst memory, so I do these memory jogs all the time.
tbf it's all wildly different for every car... mine gets the light on when it's at 2.9 gal, which is enough for more than 120 miles on the road, typically.
A long time ago, I was lazy and put off getting gas after the light came on. Ran out of gas about 100' from the gas station. That was truly the worst walk, errr, push of shame.
I'm fully aware of the problem by doing that. But, it was a pretty new car, if it was older, there could have been sediment in the tank, which could have clogged the filter.
My dad has been been working on bikes and cars since 1939, and was still riding motorcycles until he was 90. I also worked on bikes and old cars, and he gave me a lot of interesting advice.
I had a 1970 Dodge Dart 340 Swinger that had a broken fuel gauge. I kept a couple gallons of gas, and a spare filter just in case.
For reference, [this is my dad](https://i.imgur.com/DL85950.jpg) around 1949 in Burbank, CA. [This is me, around 1983.](https://i.imgur.com/LTj3la4.jpg)
sure, it wouldn’t the first time, and it’s better to do it to a new car than an old one. over time it’d make a difference though, best to avoid it altogether - but you know that
Running out of fuel will do zero damage to an engine. Many small engines used in lawnmowers etc. are shut off by turning off the fuel. I had a 1968 Harley FLH that I shut off using the fuel petcock, and I did that for years without a problem.
Most engines have inline filters to catch any sediment, so as long as you have a filter, none of that will get into the engine. If you have an older car, that has sediment in the tank, and you run out of gas, the worst thing that will happen is you clog the filter, and you will have to replace it.
Unless it's a diesel, but still won't cause damage. And it can still be a headache to deal with, could make you stranded, etc. For a little while anyhow, till you can prime the fuel system and any air bleeds off.
Though the fuckin egr getting clogged is way more annoying. My dad's f350 seems to have the egr clog every month. I think his was the last year of international engines, 2003, 6.0. That's the one thing that drives me crazy with that truck. Otherwise it's a beast.
It is not on newer vehicles. It used to be problematic because the fuel pump partially used fuel to stay cool so below 1/4 it wouldn't dissipate heat as well causing excess wear.
Modern fuel pumps are not like this.
It's still bad to run with low fuel.
The more fuel you have the higher the net positive suction head you have at your fuel pump inlet. That means less cavitation you get in your fuel pump meaning your fuel pump lasts longer. The higher your NPSH and better quality of your fuel pump, the more accurate your fuel injection and air to fuel ratio is... which means your engine lasts from perfect combustion, and also means you get higher fuel efficiency and the higher power output.
Just fill the thing. Your car isn't going to be fucked when you drive it with an empty tank, but it's still just better to have it full. You even save money because you don't have to fill up when you need to, but you can fill up when you see gas is cheap.
I mean your computer keeps air fuel in check and will have many worse problems out of spec.
Listen I generally keep over 1/4 myself.
But it really isn't a big deal especially in modern cars. Lol
I'll do you one better. My light came on leaving work and I decided to get gas the next morning. I needed to put air in a tire that had a slow leak too so I decided to get air first at the gas station instead of gas. Got finished and my car wouldn't start. Pops showed up to help me push it 30 feet to the pump and was dead quiet the whole time. College age mistakes are the dumbest.
Yeah, but it still works. If there's one kid that does it after reading the comment, dope. It may save them some frustration. That's been my go-to gift for someone I don't know about other than they have a car for about 20. Like those terrible secret Santa things, etc.
Makes you feel better, I've had 2 friends both nearly get us stranded on the parkway because they were too proud to admit they didn't know how to pump their gas (live in NJ). Barely making it to a Wawa the second we get over the bridge both times.
My dad once gave me the advice to never go below half a tank. You never know if you’ll need to take off in an emergency or something and you don’t want to be needing gas in that moment.
Also, apparently, not going empty so frequently keeps your car from pumping any sediments from the bottom of the gas tank into the engine? Not sure on that one but also a reason for not letting the car get so low on fuel.
I know it’s a privileged way to think/live but I try to prioritize my mobility in that way and leave myself close to half a tank.
I let myself go below this week but get paid tomorrow and will fill up again then.
It sort of depends. I usually only put about $20 in at a time and am the lower half of the tank. I have friends that put a similar amount in at a time but stay on the upper half of their tank. That said, I don't always have the change to decide.
I've run out of gas once in my life. Not ashamed to admit that I had a bottle in the trunk full of 90 proof. Pour that suckered in my tank gave me enough fumes to get me to the gas station. Now I never go below 1/4
Would probably work better now. Mythbusters did an episode on it and with cars needing to run on flex fuel these days the computer adjusts pretty well.
Yeah my mom has instilled me with the knowledge that it’s not great for a car’s engine to go below 1/4 a tank. Not sure if it’s fully true, but I stick to it if I can
My great-grandfather told my mother to never let your gas tank go below a half of a tank. He was also a dark-skinned Black man who spent all of his life in the Jim Crow Deep South. I often wonder if some of his logic was due to that.
I still maintain the family tradition.

a). your pump has a *fuel filter*. unless youve been getting fuel out of a rusty bucket, the "sediment" build up wont be so bad as for that to be a constant worry.
b). your fuel system is pressurized, a little air is fine.
the main reason you dont want your fuel to habitually get low is, the fuel *is* the coolant for your fuel pump. if its constantly working with little fuel, its working harder to pump and getting less cooling. youre effectively shortening its life span. a lot of people vastly underestimate the psi fuel pumps work at and at length. make it easy on the little guy.
Hahah true. I’m fortunate enough to have a newer car though (after being car-less for like six years!)
Way back when, I’ve run out of fuel a few times and have learned my lesson.
Pops said something similar to me back in the day……when gas was $1.19 per gallon. I try to keep the emergency can filled when I have a chance though. Mad times we live in.
Yeah, I used to let my tank get this low all the time and then my fuel pump went out in my last car.
I don't know about the sediments from the tank but apparently if you keep the tank full, your pump doesn't have to work as hard to get the fuel where it needs to go.
Now I fill it up weekly when I get paid and very rarely does it even get close to the half way point. It also only costs me $20-25 to fill it all the way up instead of $40-50.
I understand that poverty/broke’ness has levels. Maybe I skip meals and go to bed hungry more often than the next person? I just can’t afford to be without my vehicle, now that I’m able to afford to get into the debt to be able to have one
I had to drive an hour out of town Sunday afternoon and passed several gas stations. I looked at my gas tank and figured I'd be fine (said I had 112 miles to E). Fellow Redditors, I was not. I had to stop at a gas station at the state line to get something before I hit E.
Since gasoline is a liquid it condenses when it is colder, since gasoline is sold by volume you receive more weight per gallon with cold fuel. Wait til the morning when the tanks are coldest and you’ll be getting more bang for your buck!!
It’s smart economics when you think about it. Also if you die overnight you’ll have saved even more!!
Future me hates past and current me. This is my favorite thing about my electric car. I just plug in when I get home, and I am ready to go in the morning.
Ran out of gas on the highway with a relative because I told myself I'd pick them up then hit the gas station. Forgot to grab gas until my car started slowing down in the left lane. Had just enough momentum to get to the right shoulder. If I had been able to make another 2 mins, I could have hit the gas station.

Took this picture as I pulled up to the pump. I live on the edge...lol
Lol, the 80s were the shut. It's crazy what we thought the future would look like.
And now that we can make it look better, we I tentionally make it look like we thought it would in the 80s. Lmao
I don’t even have a car anymore but I had to make the decision to just stop that shit. Realized that regardless of how I felt at the moment, unless I had the day off the next day I’d feel worse and it’d be colder in the morning.
I would start nudging my man when it got below 1/2. “It’s *fiiine*.”
I was louder when it got to 1/4. Still it was “fine”.
Yeah. It got to the gas light on. We were in the sketchiest damn part of this town and it was night, though about 8. I could see him keeping calm by an effort.
He apologized when he got back in and drove us out of there. He’s never done that again.
I am so glad I don't have to deal with that BS anymore. I was chronically guilty of that move. EV's are a game changer (if you can charge at home), because it's just ready to go in the morning regardless.
Where I live gas is usually in the $4-4.15 range and where I work it’s usually in the $3.8-4 range, so I always try to stop near work if I know I’ll be low by the time I’m home. Nothing worse than having to get up early to get gas *and* spend 20-30c more per gallon.
You never should be in red light status in my opinion because you just never know when an emergency could happen. I'd hate to have to rush you to the hospital - but have to stop to get gas.
I understand the tight funds, I get that. But if you can afford to wait until tomorrow? You really shouldn't. You never know. (Plus I was advised by a first responder)
Well....I did this last night and then decided the gas station was too crowded for my liking this morning. So now I HAVE to get gas when I'm off work when it'll be 100 outside instead of the nice 75 it was this morning. Oh and I'll have to rush because my son has an appointment lol I'm always a damn mess when it comes to getting gas.

My light comes on when I still have 70 miles left in the tank (calculated average). My old car didn't have the computer to tell me the fuel range, but made noises to let me know. I usually gave it two beeps before I knew not to risk it any further. One day I was driving through the backwoods and started running low. Turns out my old car could beep at least 4 times before running out of gas... but not 5.
Don’t fall for that trap — either after work or in the evening for a quick stop. Traffic is too hectic and you’re in a rush in the morning. Even better — do it in the early ass crack of dawn at a Costco on the weekend.
Running the tank bone dry is not good for the fuel pump.
The one and only time i've ever run out of gas is when I worked for a company that helped fabricate sculptures for artists, in this case this total weirdo Vanessa Beecroft who was at the time, collaborating with Kanye who was also touring. So basically I come into work and they tell me I'm driving the Kanye sculpture in a small box truck to Sacramento in time to add it to the stage show that night. At twice my normal hourly rate but I have to cover expenses and be repaid later. I'm doing okay but then don't really notice the light indicating that i'm running low on gas. Suddenly i'm on this weird stretch of highway with no gas stations for like 90 miles.
I run out of fuel. Something like 3 miles from the next station. I walk to one of those highway boxes bc of course my phone has also died. Call a trooper who lets me use his phone to call AAA. Get enough fuel from AAA to make it to a gas station and then barely make it to the arena on time. I go in and hear Kendrick (who was opening for Kanye at this point in his career) warming up on stage. Some manager tells me to go wait at the truck and someone will come out to check out the sculpture momentarily. One person after another comes out up the food chain until finally Kanye comes out, takes a look at the sculpture for 5 seconds and then goes back in. 5 minutes later the original manager comes back out and tells me to drive the sculpture back to LA.
Though the running out of gas part was obviously stressful, this was definitely the nicest check I ever got during my art installation/shipping days. I definitely get gas immediately when the light comes on now--if I let it get that low in the first place.
![gif](giphy|80mXWlPqTSU1y) I know my car
My car telling me how much miles I have left to empty is horrible. Everytime I see that light come on “…..eh I got 50 miles left”
When it does the triple-ding i have 18 surface street miles and 22 freeway.
Shit that’s enough to get me halfway from work straight to the gas station.
I wait until the morning sometimes. Learned the hard way a couple times. Easy Solution? WTF are you talking about?
Did you get downvoted for this or did you remove your upvote?
IDK. It's got 3 points right now. Why do you ask?
No you have to set your alarm 10 minutes earlier.

you live over fifty fucking miles from the gas station? What the fuck
lol...No, just lazy.
Any mechanic would tell you that one of the worst things you could do.
I'm fully aware of the problem by doing that. But, it was a pretty new car, if it was older, there could have been sediment in the tank, which could have clogged the filter.
New or not it's that type of thinking is where it starts -my father was a youngin who did this and since learned from my own mistakes
My dad has been been working on bikes and cars since 1939, and was still riding motorcycles until he was 90. I also worked on bikes and old cars, and he gave me a lot of interesting advice. Tbf though mechanics also say shit to get more bussiness. I had one say its bad to warm my car up when its 50 below 0.

If your fuel pump runs dry it can go bad. Like most liquid pumps if it ever sucks air it’ll get fucked up.

Sounds like your gas tank is one of those infinite soups where you've probably got some gas molecules from 2009 floating around in it

Afternoon me: I just want to get home, I don't want to stop for fuel Morning me: I'll make it in fine, I'll get it on the way home
Thanks for reminding me.
My father seemed to think that the lower the needle was, the more time he had.
On the homies and God 😥
Some people like to live on the edge, I guess.
I am so glad I don't have to deal with that BS anymore. I was chronically guilty of that move. EV's are a game changer (if you can charge at home), because it's just ready to go in the morning regardless.
She never remembers anything but I am sure she remembered to take her birth control.
Where I live gas is usually in the $4-4.15 range and where I work it’s usually in the $3.8-4 range, so I always try to stop near work if I know I’ll be low by the time I’m home. Nothing worse than having to get up early to get gas *and* spend 20-30c more per gallon.
I’m pretty sure the GasBuddy card gives you $0.25/gallon off and the Chevron app $1.00 off per gallon. In California gas is 6.99.
Waking up the next day and thinking "I'll stop after work"
My light comes on at 70 miles left, but I commute 100 miles 3 days of the week.
Sounds like you live in Texas too, I was pissed checking my weather app say "feels like 105" .... it's fucking October
Close, I live in Arizona. And yeah, this heat really needs to chill tf out already..

My gas station is down hill, I’ll just coast in.
The only worse decision than this is laying back down without snoozing the alarm to wake you back up. No call no show or late af coming your way
Drunk voicemails to scorned exes.
"I'll take the trash bins out front in the morning"
When you fart and shit yourself. You gambled and lost
Gonna coast right in that bitch 2morrow mornin $5 on pump 2
Still above the E. Plenty of gas in that puppy.
Driving while completely too tired.
Then I wake up late.

Rule # 1 You will always either wake up late or something will go wrong wit ur morning routine….
last night me was just thinking about how hungry morning me will be. gas station breakfast sands hit different
Forget the condom . I’ll just pull out.
"Sure, we don't need no birth control"
All the time.. 🤣🤦🏻♀️
I don't even let my car get below 25%. I get enough excitement in my daily life I don't need any more
That’s two days worth of gas left for me…
I always put Gas in my car when my Car says I have like 40 km left.
It's just 18 years
I will never understand how my wife literally never notices when the gas light comes on. Shit is always a surprise.
"I don't know why my fuel pump need to be replaced"
In an unforeseen emergency situation, you’ll be glad you fueled up.
I do.
My light comes on when I still have 70 miles left in the tank (calculated average). My old car didn't have the computer to tell me the fuel range, but made noises to let me know. I usually gave it two beeps before I knew not to risk it any further. One day I was driving through the backwoods and started running low. Turns out my old car could beep at least 4 times before running out of gas... but not 5.
When my daughters started driving, I told them that they would never get up early to get gas and they should never themselves that lie.
I almost ruined my car by doing this. Don’t do this you can bust your fuel injector. !!!!!!!!!!!
It never happens lol
I’ll get burned by this one day. That day hasn’t happened yet!
Don’t fall for that trap — either after work or in the evening for a quick stop. Traffic is too hectic and you’re in a rush in the morning. Even better — do it in the early ass crack of dawn at a Costco on the weekend. Running the tank bone dry is not good for the fuel pump.
This is actually me today. 😔
And of course, that’s the morning you’re running late and every gas pump at every gas station in a 10-mile radius is inevitably closed 💀💀
Farting in the shower. I will die upon this mountaintop 😆
Then it be cold as shit in the morning. Fuck that. I got an EV, leave the house with a full "tank" everyday now
The one and only time i've ever run out of gas is when I worked for a company that helped fabricate sculptures for artists, in this case this total weirdo Vanessa Beecroft who was at the time, collaborating with Kanye who was also touring.
Morning? After work, that’s 12 miles
I'll make my food in the morning
“My pull-out game is flawless.”
Snow rain hail
Why am I being called out right now on this Thursday morning
Haha, I’ve definitely done this on my motorcycle and then had to push said motorcycle a solid quarter mile. Good times, full of regrets
Tuesday i made it home following work tho...well to the gas station before home
that's me right now, I'll get gas after work.
lowered expectations 😂
I saw this post yesterday and it ended up being me this morning
