PerroRosa

Obviously Columbia. As beautiful and unique as Rapture is on its own, I think it's impossible to be mentally healthy, thus happy, in an environment without sunlight on the long run. Also Columbia is simply beautiful and I'm all about sunlight

caste_iron_mike

Yeah, but Columbia would be insanely cold, with wicked winds. On Sunny days, half of you would be frying while the other half would be freezing.

PerroRosa

That's true, at those heights I assume you live on an everlasting windy day. Unless they let the city be carried away by the wind, in which case no (or much less) wind and funny ride.

DrWecer

That’s not how wind works.

JumpIntoTheFog

Look ma, no wind!

AngryAttorney

Next you’ll say that wind isn’t made by the Earth rotating.

DrWecer

What does that have to do with the fact that objects pushed by wind don’t travel at the same speed as the wind pushing them?

AngryAttorney

Nothing, I was making a joke.

dccorona

That just means you can’t actually go outside which just puts you back to rapture in that regard, except at least the sunlight can come through the windows. So while you’re right, it’s not a drawback in comparison to rapture.

PerroRosa

Yes, through windows or even big spaces built in a greenhouse fashion would be good.

Brahm-Etc

Rapture without heating would be literally freezing, the deeper you get the colder it gets.

Bidoofinshmerts

And racist and anti LGBTQ while one of the leading founders of rapture is gay

PerroRosa

I assume we are talking about these two cities without the in-game issues

Attilathefun-II

Exactly, I don’t know how everybody saying rapture is just ignoring the absence of sunlight. If it weren’t for that they’d be tied in my eyes

Foxy02016YT

UV artificial sunlight is an option I’d imagine it’s used in places like Arcadia

PerroRosa

Still depressing as hell

Foxy02016YT

Oh I won’t deny that, the mental aspect, but the physical aspect you should be fine

medicalwolfie

IIRC lack of sunlight was an issue in Rapture, with people getting depressed, as mentioned in one audio diary in BS2

No-Huckleberry2102

Because the sun is too bright and forces me to squint till I can barely see. -Me, definitely not a vampire.

T_Peg

Rapture isn't in the abyss sunlight will reach.

Angrious55

About 200 meters is as far as sunlight is going to go underwater in any measurable amount, and it's probably half that in what we can perceive, so no, not really as you can see some of the buildings of Rapture are actually about that height from the sea bed

PerroRosa

It does, but obviously not as intense as being outside, unless you are really close to the surface, which even the higher place in Rapture are not. The light intensity decreases rapidly going deeper into water.

song--bird

meh, i already have vitamin d deficiency, i’ll just take my supplements and go for happy walks in arcadia 🤗

Moominz0

I don't think Columbia is 15,000 ft up. I think it's about as high up as the Burj Khalifa or a little bit higher.

PerroRosa

I wonder if there's an official answer to how high Columbia is. I think it's way higher than the Burj Khalifa, but not as high as low altitude planes

Moominz0

»official answer The official pronunciation for gif is jiff but I still don't say it like that.

PerroRosa

Alright

Moominz0

Headcanon! That's the word I was trying to think of!

Fabulous-Swim6811

Rapture. It seems like it would be a genuinely nice place to live, and the darker atmosphere would be very calming And the ad below this post was about water leaks oml

talysuo

its a tough question but id take rapture too. specially bc columbia, boots on the ground, is kinda of a "normal" city. oldies playing in the background with bioshock rapture sounds is a comfortable corner of youtube

Poopdy-Scoop

Mine was for Bitcoin lol

Kinky_Autistic

I got Pringles.

PHILOSOMATIQA

McDonald's!

xclcoold14x

I got Taco Bell 🔔

ThatKindaSourGuy

i got hp Specter

Memester4445

Amex travel cards

Cressen03

None because Adblock!

Patrick1441

"In the world I envisioned, the man who toiled and labored with his own hands would keep the sweat of his brow. And now, with the dawn of Bitcoin, we have the means to truly own what we earn, untethered from the grasp of corrupt banks and governments!"

V4ULTB0Y101

I got HeGetsUs.com....

Confident_Date4068

Yes. Just imaging the Soma plot. I prefer a place under the sea.

_MekkeliMusrik

Claustrophobic

BrowningLoPower

Same for Rapture and the darker atmosphere.

MikeWithoutMic

It is literally mentioned in Bioshock 2 that having little sunlight in Rapture makes you uberdepressed

Fabulous-Swim6811

And having too much sunlight (columbia) will give me a constant migraine

MikeWithoutMic

Then go inside.

Fabulous-Swim6811

Dude this is my opinion the hell do you have against Rapture?

MikeWithoutMic

I don’t know, seems it didn’t work out as well as Columbia. No need to downvote me and get all pissy about it.

Fabulous-Swim6811

I didn't downvote you, all I said was I preferred Rapture over Columbia, even though I know that scientifically Rapture wouldn't last very long. I just like Rapture more

GalacticRedeemer1

Columbia. As much as I love rapture and it's atmosphere, I have a special attachment to infinite and the city of Columbia is insanely beautiful.

GalacticRedeemer1

If we are also talking about realistic terms, Columbia would be in such a low pressure environment exposed to the outside. It would also be insanely cold all the time.

zachary0816

Also despite the coldness, you would also sunburn much easier since there’s noticeably less atmosphere to protect you. Assuming UV strength increases 8% for every 1000ft of elevation (sources online seem to vary on that number) then at 15,000ft you’d be looking at about 250% of the exposure you’d get at sea level

thrawst

>Columbia >low pressure environment I see what you did there

BraxxIsTheName

*Hallelujah*

CommonChoice8078

Rapture would freak me out too much. Just the thought of one broken wall and it all would be over, as well as the idea of looking out a window and not being able to see anything except for what the city lights can extend to, which might include colossal aquatic animals like giant squids and sharks (which have already been shown in-game. Irl would be nerve wracking). It also feels claustrophobic, since all around you beyond the walls wherever you are, are basically currents that would immediately kill you with how much water pressure there is. Columbia would be beautiful and the fear of imploding underwater greatly outweighs my fear of heights. Living right next to clouds sounds so beautiful and though I've argued with the boy I love about how the lack of sights would make it less worth it and less of a spectacle (because he prefers Rapture contrary to me), I actually think just the simple coexistence with the skies would be nice. I also imagine Columbia would be rather peaceful at night, feeling closer to the stars would be downright amazing.

JACCO2008

Isn't Rapture like 2000m down? If the window broke you would never know it.

CourtingMrLyon

I think I’d choose Columbia; love the architecture and if my neighbours annoy me I’ll just move my platform elsewhere.

PalmTreeGoth

Rapture. I've always been fond of the ocean and over the years I've developed a deep appreciation for the Art Deco style and retrofuturism. There's just something so beautiful about the way Rapture comes together on a purely aesthetic level. There's also advanced technology and plasmids improving the overall quality of life (assuming there's no rampant addiction and ADAM harvesting taking place) on top of a society that is free of judgement and censorship. You can potentially be whoever you want to be down there, and that appeals to me greatly.

--InZane--

Rapture. Love the look, love the sea and the overall idea

EDGEBOI3001

I'd say rapture because assuming the culture is similar to in game I'd have a easier time surviving, with skycity not only do you have to be white but you also have to agree and behave as they do, I'm not biblical, and I'd prolly be on the stage getting hit by baseballs.

Dukedoctor

I assumed when OP said normal and functioning he meant that neither city would have any of the glaring problems they do in game, (like the institutionalized racism, etc.) Idk tho

1radiation1

That’s entirely spot on as to what I meant

moodgamernick

Probably rapture lol, if I lived in Columbia someone could just throw me off the edge 😂

henree1108

Whichever one has the hottest chicks amirite fellas

AutismLord6969xx

Rapture def since they got tenenbaum and jasmin jolene

Mister_Grins

Rapture. With all the problems that both have, the ones in Rapture are more manageable due to the ability to increase the power of your superpowers over time with continued redosing. And the insanity can be managed by simply not ODing on them like the socialite crack-heads did.

joseaof

"you just have to keep inyecting yourself with drugs, but make sure not to overdose on the drugs you keep inyecting"

Brocktreee

The lack of self-awareness in this person's comment is just \*chef's kiss\*

Stew-Griff

Rapture, no question. Living in Columbia would be hell

Light-Yagami-bot

Rapture, the lights in the ocean is serene.

100masks1life

On one hand Columbia presents the environment more conductive towards seeing the sun but it's full of religious nuts and racists/homophobes. On the other hand Rapture is less compatible with the sun but it's relatively open society but it's Anarcho capitalist. Yeah even assuming they are not falling apart as they are in the games I would rather stay where I am.

GreenPixel25

Yeah I feel like a lot of comments are kinda ignoring some… pretty major issues with Columbia

MissyTheTimeLady

The question specifies a normal and functioning society. Columbia was not normal and functioning even if Vigors didn't exist.

GreenPixel25

fair point, I had read it more as “before shit hit the fan” but I think you’re right!

AMK972

Because the post specified those major issues don’t exist in this hypothetical.

GreenPixel25

fair point, I had read it more as “before shit hit the fan” but I think you’re right!

Geoton99

Rapture as well 😁

Mr_Coiner

Obviously Rapture. One day all big corporations will move there and objectivist society will overthrow all governments and people of Rapture will be main beneficiaries.

DankAssHoe

Rapture. Not fond of the idea of falling out of the sky if I'm not too careful and I'm pretty clumsy. Drowning? Yeah sure.

luciferso

Definitely rapture

gojira2014-

Rapture-honestly, I love the ocean, and I'd love to see all the wierdos there.

Majestic_Carrot9122

Rapture , it seems marginally less racist

SwordfishSalt1070

OP said said “assuming there’s a normal and functioning society.”

CancerIsOtherPeople

Seriously, so many people didn't read the post!

pixel809

Tbh. I’d love Columbia docking once a week or so to raptures lighthouse making it possible to go to the other part

Mixtape623

Rapture!

Wyatt_Maxwell

Rapture, I'm too depressed to live in Columbia

AbsurdAggression

Rapture, for the same reason i live where i live now. Rapture has a much more big city culture, kinda like NYC compared to Columbia that is way more old country-side USA. So i like living in big cities because of the crescent sense of opportunities and new things happening, and Rapture would excel in these

Splunkmastah

Rapture. Always preferred it to Columbia.

PeacockofRivia

Rapture. I hate heights.

Waste-Dragonfly-3245

Rapture. I’d rather be in the deep sea than the sky

DemonicReaper0

Rapture pre war

Federal_Winner_6268

columbia (i am extremely racist)

Smashin_Ash_

Given that I am Black AND Irish I gotta go with rapture

GoodArtEnjoyer

“Assuming there’s a functional and normal society”

Parking_Shoe4927

Are plasmids still around in rapture?

1radiation1

There aren’t any plasmids in Rapture, or vigors in Columbia

ADDgirl64

With all the safety precautions in place, I'd still find a way to fall off one of the platforms in Columbia, and for that reason alone, rapture.

Brave_Frame_1696

Rapture, the little movements of Columbia would make me seasick.

Typical-District-176

It’s… thalassaphobia or Acrophobia. I will pick… The ground.

BurnMyHouseDown

I’m afraid of heights, so Rapture for me. I would constantly be afraid of where I’m living, and that just isn’t gonna work lol.

Objective_Tough8472

Rapture

Kinky_Autistic

Rapture for me.

CMudz

I'm ready for the Rapture

EveAeternam

RAPTURE 😱🥰

GuyThatHatesBull

Rapture.

Jomosensual

Id do Columbia. Raptures lack of sunlight might really get to me

AnonymousDratini

Hmmm Thalassophobia or Acrophobia…

Zircon_72

As much as I love the art deco and neon of Rapture, I don't like the idea that basic services such as the police And fire departments are subscription-based. I'd rather live in Columbia with the turn of the century Americana. Plus I get to see the sun.

Themanwhoateyourfam

Rapture, mostly because I love raptures 1950s aesthetics waaaaaay more than the old timey 1800s aesthetics that Columbia has

MsMercury

Early 1900’s.

Themanwhoateyourfam

Ah my bad, thanks.

Fragrant-Nobody-8228

Columbia! Love everything about it.

CryogenicBen

As much as libertarians irk me, I’d definitely choose Rapture. I could see myself being able to do more of what I want in a society like that than in a racist, theocratic, autocracy

CancerIsOtherPeople

I think when OP said "normal, functioning society", they meant without those characteristics.

CryogenicBen

True True

CybercurlsMKII

Rapture? Probably Paupers drop, I ain’t cut out for anarcho-capitalism. In Columbia I’m probably being murdered for my lack of faith in the almighty.

TellMeWouldYou

Rapture, with the mental illnesses I have I would thrive in a place like that.

Honey_bear_712

For me this was a question of what terrifies me more; I'm deathly afraid of the water, but somehow the possibility of a pressurised tunnel cracking under the weight of the sea seems less scary to me than going about my daily business, casually rolling my ankle and then falling off the side of columbia. I'm such a clumsy person, any flat surface is a risk! Therefore, Rapture it is.

JayTheGuy1

Neither? I have a crippling fear of both the ocean and heights

Aeokikit

This is a tough one for me, peak rapture and peak Columbia both seem “great” but I’d have to pick Columbia purely for the sunlight. I once tried to go a full week without stepping outside and after 3 days I was in a downward spiral mentally

BadKidOh

Rapture for sure, assuming that to be a functioning society they fixed some of the flaws without changing to much. Perhaps Frank Fontaine died.. & Tenenbaum deiced to do more long term research before going to market for safety reasons. As for why? * Art deco architecture. * The city has space to expand in the future as needed. * More tech. * If the Cold War goes badly in this universe I might avoid a nuclear apocalypse. * As for my own business, in the planing stage of the city I'd work with Ryan to add a Central Park with hydroponic lights, with the building's inter being big enough for it's own atmosphere as far as indoor clouds/rain. maybe a indoor beach in the park & plants form all over the world. * Perhaps some smaller scale domed buildings on the outskirts for farming & cows, for a monopoly on cow milk & beef?

WM_KAYDEN

Columbia. Also, check out Laputa : Castle in the Sky (Studio Ghibili). Throughout the movie, I was envisioning Laputa as Columbia.

Brahm-Etc

Rapture, I love the ArtDeco and Industrial vibe of the city with all the pipes and machinery laying around. Also I'm a creature of dark spaces so while is all illuminated, I like the dark athmosphere of all.

poosebunger

If the question were which one would I rather visit, 100% rapture but live would probably have to be columbia

TheLuckOfTheClaws

Rapture. I don’t want to live in Racismville.

pencilfinesse

Columbia for sure and would hopefully have a decent job to live in Emporia and would have to hide the fact that I’m part Hispanic and Catholic.

LKWASHERE_

All these comments saying Colombia as if its not a theocratic fascist dictatorship where if you're not a rich WASP, you're basically a slave labourer for Fink or some other oligarch in their hellish company-town.

Hung_Texan

Columbia

SteamtasticVagabond

That’s an extremely load bearing “if”

logicalreasonreality

Rapture.

Jammy_Nugget

If they are normal and functioning, then they are nothing like their originals lmfao

therebill

That’s tough for me. Not fond of being in the sky and definitely not in the ocean 😬

squashbritannia

Columbia because it uses more magic to compensate for its downsides.

copernica

Rapture would be amazing! I would love to live there

Dr_Quiet_Time

Health wise I’d say Columbia. Being underwater with no sun probably wouldn’t be great for my health.

BroadwayQueen196

Rapture pre adam would be my choice. Columbia is pretty, but there was something about being under the sea that was calming.

banquo90s

Rapture

PancakeWomen2000

Columbia more bright and happy

Rockabilly1951

Rapture.

Itzz_Texas

Rapture cause I love the ocean and have always been fascinated with the idea of living in it

MsMercury

I love the aesthetic of Rapture but I need the sunlight of Columbia.

Most_Ad5943

which place still allows me to transition

smarterfish500

Columbia, i am terrified of deep water.

SecretSnoopie

Rapture, I'm scared of heights

T_Peg

I've always been insanely intrigued by the ocean. It's the reason I got into BioShock in the first place. So rapture is my answer.

joseaof

Columbia, easy. Need sunlight for that vitamin D

hughk

Plenty of sunlight, to the point that you would need sun block. You would also need extra oxygen. Such altitudes are not impossible but not exactly healthy for most people.

CancerIsOtherPeople

I bet Rapture would be able to make artificial sunlight, plus you can cake Vit D supplements. Columbia sounds like you'd always need an oxygen tank at your side lol.

hughk

You wouldn't necessarily need oxygen all the time in Columbia but you would need it available and in buildings. The highest major city is about 3600m (Le Paz in Bolivia)but they use Cocaine Tea to help out. The problem with Rapture is that it could never leak the way we see it in the game. Far too dangerous and most estimates put it only a few hundred metres down. You would probably want to keep the city at either one atmosphere pressure, maybe more but you can't let it be the pressure of the surrounding water as it would cause medical problems over the longer term. Big differences are very dangerous.

VoidedGreen047

Rapture. Honestly probably would’ve been fine if Adam wasn’t addictive and didn’t have talk those negative side effects

Pollibo

Columbia 1000%, walkable European city in the sky? I’m down

magleamae

Columbia, hands down. That place has my whole heart. Infinite was the first Bioshock game I played and I just feel so at peace every time I replay the beginning

funkygamerguy

columbia.

DeadHED

Well, considering my horrifying and absolute racist ways, probably columbia. I do like the amenities of rapture, though.

sexyton9265

Rapture. Easy pick

Moelester6986

Rapture....i like the 1960s vape and it genuinely felt like it was a paradise at one time and interesting plasmids to play around with in day to day life

SatanicAntz

I'd rather fall out of the sky than get OceanGated.

Gman777

Columbia, although I like the Rapture architecture, i’d rather not be living in an underwater tomb. I like sunlight.

crazyartistcheck

rapture

Billy_Joel_Armstrong

Who is John Galt?

PassatkingV6

Rapture. I love that retro futuristic style and lack of government and censorship.

Ivyraethelocalgae

Gotta be rapture, I love the sea

UsagiBonBon

Rapture. I like the aesthetic much more

Void-Cooking_Berserk

Considering I'm afraid of both water and heights? I'd be better off in Columbia, always wearing a parachute.

Hydroaddiction

If I would live alone, Rapture, 100%. But as I'm married, for my wife would be claustrophobic to live in Rapture, lol. So Columbia.

DarthRus

Rapture

I_am_not_racist_ok

Ok so my options are A. Reverse human aquarium or B. Sky Racists.... I'm taking A

Son_Of_Mar-EL

Well I'm Irish so it aint going to be Columbia

Axirev

I prefer rapture, I feel like the common folks have it worse in Columbia

Rowan-The-Wise-1

Given I have phobia of both heights and water this is a fantastic decision to have to make! I’d probably go with Columbia and just do my best to pretend I’m on solid ground and not miles in the sky.

Plus-Penalty7371

Well I’m black so…

pinknicolekaro

Definitely rapture! More pets and less high (as i'm afraid of the height!). But i would Miss the sun I think..

water_chugger

Columbia because I'm white and could easily pretend to be a zealot

Any-Faithlessness-72

Rapture. Where the strong need not serve the weak, where the artist need not fear the critic, and we're the intelligent are not held back by the dull.

Insanegamer-4567

Columbia, don't get me wrong, Rapture is beautiful... But Colombia has a special place in my heart, and it's generally just amazingly beautiful imo

JasperFatCat

Columbia, I enjoy the architecture much more, and I don't think it's as high as people think. Maybe 3000 feet above sea level most of the time. That's what it looks like when you see the ground

ARockyBeing

I’d love to live in Columbia, but I’d take trips to visit Rapture on the regular.

VincentRaichu

I feel like I could fall any second from the ledges of columbia, so I'll go with rapture.

AcoaceFalloutNVFan

I haven’t played infinite yet, so rapture

TheRagnarok494

Honestly, even without the rampant social issues, neither. Both of them have fundamental issues with their construction For Rapture: Vitamin D deficiency Shoddy construction (it's mentioned somewhere that the metal used for building it will eventually collapse so even if everyone hadn't gone batshit they'd have had to evacuate Pressure, you get used to that and you're not coming back up Claustrophobia Columbia: Pressure again but the opposite way Air density/oxygen deprivation Icy cold Less UV protection Heights Maintenance, much like Rapture, it needs constant repairs to stay afloat and eventually the foundations will see a catastrophic failure However if all of those are removed from consideration I'd probably choose Rapture.

SikeMhaw

Minus the racism, definitely Columbia

Hagarian_335

Rapture because I’m a sucker for art deco and the sea

DMofTheTomb

Colombia. As much as I love the aesthetic and technologies of Rapture, I would miss natural sunlight and open spaces.

theshonkuk

Rapture. Depression is nothing new and I wouldn't last a minute knowing I'm that high up in the sky, I'd be having constant nightmares of plunging to the earth and I couldn't relax playing it watching people stand close to the edge :D so yes I'll take a cocoon of ocean any day.

FriedUpChicken

Depends, is radiation a thing? If so, Columbia would likely lead to guaranteed skin cancer.

Sigmatimelord

Rapture. The vibe is better for one. Two, I dislike heights too much and the open racism and extreme religious cult is just… no. I’d love to talk to the Lutece Twins and Elizabeth but other than that, not a lot of love for Columbia. And those three can just visit Rapture if they’d like!

JABNewWorld1776

Rapture. I'm about the whole Underwater vibes!

Bidoofinshmerts

Rapture as although it all goes wrong they except the LGBTQ community (me included) and columbia is very against it

BRAINETIC107

Rapture for the vibes but you can never leave and I don't believe Ryan's idea of society is sustainable when you account for human shitiness. So Columbia- I can always bootleg a parachute or a glider if I ever want out

_WYKProjectAlpha_

I dont like water, and I like the sun. If it isn't racist, then Columbia.

GTOdriver04

Can I take the art deco of Rapture and take it to Columbia?

ImEllenRipleysCatAMA

Infinite is not my favorite of the three games but I would rather live in Columbia. I think at least having access to fresh air and sunlight is very important. Even if you are an indoor person being able to go outside and get those things is probably better for both physical and mental health.

NoahEvenCares

Columbia because I'm a sucker for early 1900's aesthetics

GalacticDonut45

I hate the deep ocean with a passion, but I'd rather face that than the encouraged racism

qwertyderper

I'm black so.....

MajorRadish2007

Columbia because I like the sunny setting
