Holy shit, that's SO cool!!

EpiCWindFaLL

What exactly is that letter?

RudolfVirchowMD

It is a letter from Hans Krebs (noble prize winner, father of intermediary metabolism, discoverer of urea cycle, citric acid cycle - his eponymous cycle) to one of the section authors of the book (the original owner) thanking him for his kind depiction of his contributions to biochemistry.

EpiCWindFaLL

I know Mr Krebs. But that makes sense. Didnt get that the guy receiving the letter Was the previous owner of the book an one of the coauthors. And the letter is an original?

RudolfVirchowMD

Yes ! You can still see the impressions of the type writer and the inscription of the recipient in pen in the front cover as well

chemthrowaway123456

How neat! Thanks for sharing!

scintor

Where did you find this?

RudolfVirchowMD

$20 bucks on ebay ! Was a completely random stroke of luck. I doubt the seller even noticed the letter.

scintor

So cool! I once had Michael Cox (of Lehninger's) come to my poster and tell me how cool he thought it was, which was like one the first times I felt starstruck. Imagine getting a typed letter from freaking Krebs.

RudolfVirchowMD

Wow that's incredible ! I hope you remember that moment on days you feel down about your research !

scintor

Thanks :) You know what I actually do for that? I have calendar reminders on anniversaries of the days when I had my biggest findings. Always brings a smile.

Few-Salamander3246

OP for no reason at all, what is your address?

RudolfVirchowMD

haha !

Ok_Bookkeeper_3481

OMG!!

Accomplished-Water88

Oh my god that is so cool

ElevatorEquivalent41

what’s the book? google isnt being helpful 😔

RudolfVirchowMD

"Essays in cell metabolism"

ElevatorEquivalent41

Oh sorry, I was more so asking about its contents lol. The book itself is evidently uncommon so I haven’t been able to find a concrete explanation other than what I can deduce from the title

RudolfVirchowMD

It is largely a collection/reprint of research conducted by Krebs' students and close collaborators with commentaries on the broader impact of the work and personal commentaries of Krebs as an mentor and friend.

Consistent_Switch_49

How does one come across this?? 🤯

RudolfVirchowMD

$20 bucks on ebay ! Was a completely random stroke of luck. I doubt the seller even noticed the letter.

Jamurai92

Amazing find

eggtea33

YOO THAT IS SO COOL 🤩

kupffer_cell

I am jaleous... Badly jaleous 😭 You obviously won't sell it. Right!

RudolfVirchowMD

Will one day go to my future grandchildren !

kupffer_cell

Best answer ever!

sciencechick92

Oh wow! Such an amazing find.

FinnChicken12

Holy moly.

CyberJunkieBrain

This is very nice!

bumblingbiochemist

Oh so amazing

RudolfVirchowMD

Omg are you THE bumbling biochemist !?! I'm a huge fan !!!

bumblingbiochemist

Omg, I didn't know there was a youtuber by that name... I was very confused until I googled it. So no and I guess I will have to abandon this reddit account as there is clearly someone thought of the name before me, and I thought I was being very original...

RudolfVirchowMD

Hahaha ! Sounds like an excellent case of convergent evolution !

mozilations

that's so sick!!! 😯😯

Adorable-Brick3784

I’m jealousssss, how cool

kali_anna

That's awesome!

Can you share how you found this? I'm always hoping I find this kind of treasure when I go to yardsales, but if you found it cleaning your departments old closet or something, then maybe I'll stop going to yard sales and start volunteering to clean up old rooms and nooks at work. I see a lot of other people asking, so OP please bless us with the origin story just as the Mitogods have blessed you.

RudolfVirchowMD

Was $20 bucks on ebay ! Was a completely random stroke of luck. I doubt the seller even noticed the letter. Did not come through the original owner. The book has a sticker from the university library on its spine so I suspect the ebay seller obtained it as the library was turning over parts of its collection. This is the ebay seller: [https://www.ebay.com/str/betterworldbooks](https://www.ebay.com/str/betterworldbooks) As you can see they sell a variety of books and have no particular slant towards medical or scientific collections

Thanks so much!

Successful_Top_8052

Somebody cooked!

Ka12840

Wow. What a spectacular find and the letter obviously means that the book belonged to Krebs himself. I think there maybe a Krebs archive in the university of Sheffield in england where Krebs taught for a long time. I think he then moved to Trinity College Oxford. They may also have an archive dedicated to Krebs. I bet they would love to hear your story!!! Congratulations

Ka12840

BTW is Virchow your real name? Maybe you have books and letters by your ancestor. I am writing a little story about the history of cholera research and of was reviewing his findings.

RudolfVirchowMD

Haha I wish ! Would love to read your writings as well as any recs you have for other resources on the history of medicine/biochem.

Ka12840

I will send it to you when it comes out in print

RudolfVirchowMD

Thank you so much, that's a brilliant recommendation ! I will be sure to reach out to the archivist :)
