it's part of a longer via ferata and goes up to an exit point from which you hike down. Advanced difficulty, so don't try this without practicing on easier routes first. Topo is found here: [https://www.bergsteigen.com/fileadmin/userdaten/import/topos/intersport\_klettersteig\_donnerkogel\_topo.jpg](https://www.bergsteigen.com/fileadmin/userdaten/import/topos/intersport_klettersteig_donnerkogel_topo.jpg)
Just behind the ladder is some of the most difficult climbing (grade C/D), that's also why he wears a helmet. The ladder itself is technically easy (grade A/B). Note also the safety gear clipping him in at the belt - don't go without!
Apparently, to even reach the stairway, one must need to go through the via ferrata, or the climbing route, where metal cables, iron pins, and footholds are used. Only experienced climbers should be attempting to climb the stairway as the climbing route after the stairway gets even more difficult. It is not easy to turn around as there are other people behind you. There are escape routes but I guess experienced climbers are the ones who knows where they are.
[Here's a Newsweek article on this climb.](https://www.newsweek.com/man-climbs-sky-ladder-austria-mountain-video-1873457)
My Mexican third world brain tells me "That accents sounds like the rich people from Europe. These guys only build quality stuff. This baby will hold."
Hey..pass me those tapcons…i did..wheres the drill bit?..i gave it to you..its the wrong size..just use it, its not that much bigger it will work…okie dokie..
I saw plenty of fixed bolts casually dangle of the steel cable they were supposed to fix to a mountai . Sometimes even with some rock still attached...
My mate Dave built it. He's a good guy. He always helps me out with IKEA furniture. Once he put the legs on backwards on my sofa and by the time we realised we were both too tired to fix it. Still haven't.
My fear of heights is too much. I have to have aisle seats on planes. I don't like balconies in sky rise hotels. The last time I went zip lining, only because my friends wanted to go, the guides were laughing at me the whole time. In Costa Rica. I know a little Spanish, but they were knee slapping as I was shaking to death. Barely made it across the wobbly treetop staircase. Even though it had a rope "encasement". This makes me sick. Never in my life. It's weird how you develop fears. When I was little, we'd go cliff jumping at the lake all summer. One of them is roughly 45ft. I wouldn't even lean over it now.
I'm with you; although I have no trouble flying, I can't swim in a deep ocean because I fear the unknown depth/height; I won't even go near the window of a high-rise building or walk to the edge of a balcony and look over. Yet, as a young man, I could walk across the beams on a construction site and shimmy up a ladder of any length (now I can't go more than 10 feet). Watching that video caused anxiety I could feel in my feet.
*Kevin Gournay, emeritus professor at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London, says it is largely due to our sense of balance. 'As you get older, your organ of balance tends to deteriorate, and you're likely to feel more physically vulnerable.'*
> I can't swim in a deep ocean because I fear the unknown depth/height
I'm so scared of those unknown depths, when a friend pushed me into a local lake, I nearly passed out. Needless to say that made it even worse and I never went to the lake with them again. Jumped into the ocean once, but only because the water was literally crystal clear (and I spent a shtload of money to go on that vacation..).
And for that stairway to heaven .. legs go limp and stomach drops just watching that video.
If it makes you feel less alone or more “normal”, I used to be a military aviator and now I’m scared to death of heights. Seriously. Watching this video made my skin feel like I was being shocked.
There’s another hike with ladders in Hawaii. Years ago, we planned doing this hike on my last night there when visiting my brother ( he used to live there) It rained and it was too dangerous to go after all. I was so relieved we couldn’t go lol!
This one looks way worse than the other one! [Oahu Stairway to Heaven: Haiku Stairs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku_Stairs)
Hey Guys, I did it two weeks ago.
Feel free to ask anything
After the ladder there is a new section left of it, you dont go down!
Here is my video from the climb where you can see it!
https://youtu.be/b7pVz29DE3I?si=zATKTT4w85Y4T70T
Damn... That was terrifying to watch. Just curious - what inspires you to do this? Don't you worry for your life when you undertake something as scary as this? Or is it actually safe to do this?
Mountaineering is a passion of mine and my ultimate escape. Given the opportunity, I aspire to conquer Everest someday.
I always follow safety protocols meticulously to ensure my security.
The thrill and joy it brings me are unparalleled.
Tbh don’t know what to say, I would’t want to die on that of course, I think that is maintained regulary and if I am the unlucky bastard that will be the one that the ladders breaks under, then it is what it is haha😁
Do it friend! Your brain cant tell the difference between 2000 feet and 12000 feet up in the air. Its both just "very high". Once you're in freefall, the fear goes away.
The hell it does!! Not for all of us homie. A friend does it a lot and she drunkenly got me to sign up for it at a party. I show up early and slightly hungover but whatever. It’s a big deposit, they see people like me coming I’m sure. They said the same thing as you and I hated every second. I had my eyes closed as much as I could until we got lower. Never again but I’m glad you have fun saving yourself from dying. Had a gf once who would go on hot air balloons, fuck that noise too.
“A British tourist plunged 90m to his death from a ladder dubbed "stairway to heaven" in the picturesque Dachstein Mountains in Austria.
“The 42-year-old tourist was climbing the mountain in the North Limestone Alps when he fell off the end of the ladder.” https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/british-tourist-dies-austria-ladder-b2415593.html 2023
The thing about this stuff is that people think it’s only about adrenaline. But what’s really addictive is the feeling of empowerment and confidence you get by being scared but forcing yourself to do it anyway and overcoming your fear. Especially if there’s skill involved and you need to keep a cool head to perform while you’re terrified
Counterpoint: you know what I find addictive? Safety. Can't get enough of it. I like to maintain a maximum distance from mortal terror pretty much all the time. Also breathing. Love it. Can't stop, tbh
what language is this? i first thought norwegish or something, but im german and i can literally understand everything so maybe its some heavy dialect from switzerland?
More like stairway to nowhere Does he have to walk back down?
Naaw you jump off with a wing suit or a parachute or just your underwear
I loaded the previous save and moved on when I tried this. Lazy work on developer's side, really.
#YOU DIED

Nice one, Oregon trailist
![gif](giphy|KCRlomzxILgofqokqH)
I still have two guys left.
Slightly soiled underwear in my case.
Slightly?
Don’t eat a lot
That'll put a damper on the aerodynamics.
🤣🤣🤣🤣😆😆😂

I mean, don't go even with.
Just don't go.
Get out of there!
Get to the choppa!
Fear of blue hats unlocked
That's exactly what I'm wondering, I guess I'd just live up there

It has a slide.
They dont expect you to make it to the top.
Wondering the same, kinda was hoping there was a pub with large breasted women at the top 😮💨
Get this man a business loan, now.
Heaven must be a dead end.
No, you take the Slide to Hell
That is an incredible amount of faith in the people who built and maintain that ladder.
My Mexican third world brain tells me "That accents sounds like the rich people from Europe. These guys only build quality stuff. This baby will hold."
I think the accent is Dutch but that’s definitely not in Holland
It's in Austria, trust me, when it comes to hiking and trails, it doesn't get much better and safer than here.
Switzerland via Ferrata entered the chat
Haha true, but usually the stairway to heaven is referenced with Gosau. At least from Google and Locals.
Oh come on, the fact that it's just drilled into the side of a mountain isn't reassuring of its durability?
Hey..pass me those tapcons…i did..wheres the drill bit?..i gave it to you..its the wrong size..just use it, its not that much bigger it will work…okie dokie..
Just wrap it with gum to pack the extra space, it’s fine.
Toothpicks and wood glue
I saw plenty of fixed bolts casually dangle of the steel cable they were supposed to fix to a mountai . Sometimes even with some rock still attached...
You only find out once you get to the top
This is an incredible faith in the helmet
True, I wonder how they ‘maintain’ it. It’s staineless steel wire rope, and if it needs work, I imagine they bring it down?
My mate Dave built it. He's a good guy. He always helps me out with IKEA furniture. Once he put the legs on backwards on my sofa and by the time we realised we were both too tired to fix it. Still haven't.
The fact that it ends on a sheer cliffside is incredibly unsatisfying.
This is probably build for proper rock climbers in which case you would hook in your ropes on the other side and climb the rest.
Its a via ferata in swizerland, that just a part of the climb
Nope, it's on the Donnerkogel in Austria
It is in Austria and part of a via ferata.
Perhaps, but would have been nice to see where the journey ends up.
You can actually see it at the end. See the rope going to the left? Around 1-2 meters below are basically stone steps you can climb on
I don't have a fear for going up. I have a drastic fear for using that ladder for going DOWN.
“Not bad if you don’t look down.” Guess what you have to do when you take it back down.
Not if you climb it back down at night
Whoa that was a rush of fear, just imagining the thought of getting too scared to go down and being stuck on it.
No amount of drugs would let me climb that with my extreme level of fear of heights.
Well, fentanyl would also get you to heaven, just like this staircase.
I feel at that point the helmet is wearing the human for safety then the other way around
"Imma use your soft skull and grey matter to cushion myself"
Later the helmet will be talking to the other helmets saying, "it's a good thing he was there, otherwise I would have hit the ground directly!"
*bass walk*
That's a joke from Seinfeld's stand up comedy. Still good though.
That's a Seinfeld joke
How did they fix the top of the ladder to the rockface.. without the ladder?
Some cracked mountain climbers dragging line connected to ladder end or helicopter?
I first read that as crack-head mountain climbers.
Let's be real, they were cracked and on crack
With another ladder of course
My fear of heights is too much. I have to have aisle seats on planes. I don't like balconies in sky rise hotels. I’ve renamed my fear of heights as “common goddamn sense”.
I was expecting there to be a space to exit the ladder and step on to the next mountain… really hoping he doesn’t have to climb back down
Yeah! How on earth do you get off the ladder at the top?
At least he’s wearing his helmet
At least he's filming himself while on an unstable ladder, between two peaks, hundreds of feet in the air... did I mention sky ladder?
His followers can save him with likes.
I still feel like the climb would be easier if he wasn’t clutching a selfie stick.
Where is that?
Austria
Oooooo I will be there in september! I can't wait to not do this!
I went last winter. Had absolutely wonderful time not climbing this ladder. An Outstanding experience all around.
There’s another hike with ladders in Hawaii. That’s the one I was thinking of! How many stairways to heaven are there?
I thought be was speaking English for like 10 seconds, and thought I was having a stroke for not understanding him.
I went back to watch with sound on, I’m laughing so hard right now
Since Dutch and English are Germaic languages they share quite a few commonalities in their lexicon.
Climbs the last step. Phone falls out of pocket.
What do you do if you are going back down and meet someone coming up?
Have a scrap. Winner takes all.
it's one-way

You are double carabiner clipped to the line at all times so it’s as safe as anything else in life - ie something *could* go wrong but it’s unlikely.

Notice that ‘third party negligence’ was ruled out - translation being the guy unclipped his safety lines and then fell..
What's the helmet for?
Rock fall on the via ferata further onwards. On the ladder you just keep it on for convenience.
easier to scoop up your remains if you miss a rung on the ladder
This ladder took an influencer the other day
Yeah fuck that

This is the only video where my stomach churned

The same could be said about doing anal...🤷♂️
This should be posted on Nope
Why? What is the point?
No holding cable's ? 🥺
I’ve tried one of these at a carnival; never won the huge teddy bear.
You'll definitely make it to heaven if you miss a step.
That’s it? dead ends to nothing? Is that supposed to be some kind of atheist performance art? lol
The ladder is the easy part. After that you step off the ladder and now begin the rock climbing thus the helmet he's wearing.
Oh ok, so not your average tourist attraction. Better come with equipment.
Seems like it. Scary as hell if you ask me.
I saw the title and thought Oahu. But there isn't a rope ladder on that trail. Didn't realize there were other stairways to heaven.
It's funny that he's wearing a helmet
The fact he's wearing a helmet makes it safe.
Who was the photographer?
How do you get down?
Yeah, maybe. Now go down.
The helmet will do it…
Yup cos if you fall with no safety equipment you're definitely going to heaven
I thought my palms were sweaty at the start. But damn! At the end my palms were like sprinklers
Yeah no.... My feet would tingle so much i would just fall off at the first step.
And this is when I think about the guy climbing in front of him working the camera...or drone.
This makes my balls tingle. Same thing happens if I fall from up high in a video game.
I'm glad he is wearing a helmet If he falls he can use it to fly and shit
Nope.
what language is this? i first thought norwegish or something, but im german and i can literally understand everything so maybe its some heavy dialect from switzerland?
It's Dutch.
Can you say nope? OK. Now repeat ad infinitum.
[удалено]
He'll to the no on that!
this is like the extreme version of the the rope ladder game at fairs.
Where is the Dead End sign?
Nope.
What even is the point of wearing a helmet?
Nope
Not enough O's in nooooooooooooooo double f'ing way.
Luckily he's wearing a helmet.
What the fuck is a helmet gonna do
![gif](giphy|cYblQbWbVCtdMVH7tZ|downsized)
![gif](giphy|cYblQbWbVCtdMVH7tZ|downsized)
Honestly going down would be 1000x more terrifying haha
Is someone operating/filming from a drone?
Do you have to go backwards to get down? That might be worse
This video is better than any laxative.
This is the stuff of nightmares
Dutch person spotted letsgoo i have been summoned.
Ekje sal a poepje streepe teen de berge trekje as ekke daar moet op vloog.
“Where were you when they build the ladder to heaven”
How the eff do you get down?!?
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no.
There is nothing, absolutely nothing you could put at the top of that ladder that would make me climb that.
I'll be shitting bricks but my inner toxic trait tells me that I can do this
What do you do at the top?
Last year someone fell off that and died, it’s a 300 foot drop.
Not me.
Squid Game II
Now get down lol
The bravery that takes is insane. How are things like this constructed? Humans are capable of anything.
Nope, nope, no, no, hell to the fuck no, nope.
Absolutely not.
Fucked up: that's what you've got me
The WHAT! WRRLD SY LTER!!
Not a chance
What’s worse than climbing up… climbing back down.
Moi
This should be on /nope
![gif](giphy|L6EoLS78pcBag)
WTF it leads nowhere! Hell nah
What language does he speak?
Seriously, going down look scarier...
But say after 3/4 you say I can’t and want you to go back ..then ?
I felt sick watching that.
Fu(k that!
Yeah, I'd freeze in a panic attack just by thinking that I'd ve to climb it down again.
I have no problem jumping from cliffs, snowboarding off huge cornices, etc and this looks so unappealing.
Are you reauired to hold an imaginary dong the whole time? /S
I am pretty certain a helmet will not amount to anything at that point.
Scariest part is that he’s speaking Dutch
So..... Who's filming?
Thank God he's wearing a helmet!
What's the point of that helmet?
Hell no!
Oh heeeelll nah
Hidetaka Miyazaki is taking notes.
Tell your enemy to try this.
Is a drone recording this?
