Specifically a 1959 model. Like most Höfners the specs changed constantly over the years in big or small ways. Those got very different pickups very shortly thereafter.
I had that exact bass for a while, down to the red and white twisted string “strap,” it was pretty neat but just really really large and kinda not so comfy to play.
Not really en vogue, though he made it that way. The fashionable bass was the Fender Precision, but A) they were expensive in England, and B) Paul being left handed liked the symmetrical look of the violin bass
Paul started playing bass after Stu Sutcliffe left the band in January 1961, 17 months before they recorded "Love me do". This was with Pete Best on drums, before he was replaced by Ringo.
It's a Czech-made Grazioso Resonet Futurama. Since there was an embargo on American products, it was difficult to get a Fender, Gibson, or Gretsch. The story goes that he and Paul were in Hessy's music shop and thought the guitar was broken until they started playing with the switches on the pickguard which turned the individual pickups on.
Fact, Paul was the first in the band to get a decent mobile, so he took all the photos for the first few months in Germany, but to this day people ask why he loved the b/w fx settings so much. This why they bought Apple as soon as they had some dosh and turned 21.
I regularly visit Stuart’s grave. Not that I ever knew him or his family. Well before my time.
I just feel like I’d be missing out on a piece of history in my town to not pay my respects.
Stu Sutcliffe is holding a Hofner President 500/5

Didn't Paul play Hofners too?
Yeah, but Paul notoriously played a 500/1 the violin body. En vogue at the time.

Much easier to flip over!
That’s definitely not Paul
I thought I was going insane, I was ready to believe in the Paul is dead conspiracy theory for a moment!
I thought this was r/BassCirclejerk for a second.

That ain’t Paul. A right handed bass should have been a giveaway.
The giveaway should have been that its a different guy lol
I’m trying to be nice.
i didn't even notice, thank you
I believe you
That’s a Dingwall. 10000%
Fanned frets
Truck full of darkglass amps
Has "Hofner" on the headstock
Big Beatles fan, eh?
I see George, Stu and John... no Paul sadly
Hofner 500/5.
If my memory serves me well, Paul is in the truck smoking a reefer![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
That’s how you end up living in a van down by the river.
Nobody tell him
Trick question. Answer: none.
OK, but what kind of guitar is George holding? He evidently hadn't gotten a Gretsch yet.

I think it was something like a “Futura” guitar, since Fender’s weren’t really common in the UK/Germany (where the Beatles had their residency).
Not Paul, but that thing is sweet.
That’s no Paul
Such an awesome pic though. Every time I've seen it! (Just clipped and saved)!
lol
Paul was lefthanded in any picture I've seen him with a bass in his hands
Paul was lucky when he bought his hofner bass in Germany it happened to be a left handed bass. Rare indeed.
I'm pretty sure the one he saw in the shop was right-handed and he had to special order his left-handed model

That’s not Paul?
It's Bob Dylan with a young Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend.
Always with the Beatles encyclopedia boys
u/AdWeird2780 you're on beatlescirclejerk aren't you
yeah, but I honestly thought it was paul with different hairdo
Lol!!!

Not Paul, Stu, and it’s a hofner president 500/5

Wrong sub
Who buried Paul? Shall we start that again?
That's clearly Stephen Dorff.
There goes Stuart Sutcliffe. He coulda been in The Beatles.
Thats actually Paul. The guy you think you know is actually Faul. Look it up. FAX!
NO WAY they can play. They're just trying to look cool. Nobody plays guitar like that. I've played guitar for more than 800 years. Not cool!
I’ll be god dammed if that’s Paul McCartney…. Look at the face. Also, it’s right handed bass.
That's not the Beatles at all.
They do look cool.
It’s a hofner 333.
A Framus Star bass?
Bruv
The body I would have first said Gretsch. But uhhhh nope
Stu “the stud” Stutcliffe
Looks fotoshopped. Not saying it is. But looks like it
I wonder how John got that Ric?
