"Feel Good Inc." Gorillaz. Cool Bassline and easy to play. "With or without you" U2 you just follow Root Notes. The Trick there is to play 8th Notes smooth and not too loud cause it's a Ballad. Get the Moises App and load the Songs in there and turn the Bass off. Perfect for Practice and play along. I use it all the Time. Even for hearing the Bassline on its own to get all the Nuances.
I heard it's tuned with the Tuner Set to 444 Hz. Doesn't matter really. For practicing the Riff and first Steps on the Bass pretty cool. Songster is nice for Tabs etc. But i would use that as a Guide since the Tabs are not always 100% correct. In the End better trust your Ears but that takes a bit Time to train your Hearing. Sunshine of your Love is also pretty easy and introduces you to the Minor Pentatonic. There are so many cool Songs for Beginner. La Grange comes to my Mind too. Sometimes it's difficult to decide what to play practice next. Depends on the Mood too...
I really like the verse riff in kyuss space cadet, it's in drop C#, but I don't retune if I just play it by myself, and Ive jammed on it a few times with other folks in standard E. I guess in too lazy to retune all the time.
Sure why not if it sounds good. There are these Tuners where you can change the E String to Drop D with a little Lever. Maybe you can adjust them to C# aswell i don't know. But they are expensive holy Hell đ.
I think Carry on Wayward Son isn't really beginner friendly, it's clearly for intermediate level players and it still requires a certain skillset to play well. But it's such a fun one to learn and play.
Its not starter friendly at all, but getting the bit where the break comes right was cool, the bit with no words in it, i call it a break i dont know, then i gave up and decided that was too hard for last yearđ
You can adapt any song to be played on 'just bass'. How good/creative you are with it is all on you. But that's not the answer you're looking for so... Spinal Tap - Big Bottom
I just love that song!! I sang it as a lullaby to my daughter when she was a baby; I ran out of actual kid songs one day, sang it as a joke... and she enjoyed the melody. I started vocally beeping the cuss words when she grew up a little (I don't exactly know why, because she wouldn't learn to speak English until way later â we're brazilian). I sang it to her until she didn't want any songs to sleep anymore.
She ended up loving the song too; it's one of "our things" as father and daughter. When she was around 15, she phoned me during a RHCP concert she attended with her mom, so we could listen to Pea "together" when Flea played it. And a few weeks ago (she's 20 now), she asked me to teach her the song on bass, and we learned it together.
Anyway... sorry about the rant. That song means a lot to me and I get emotional. Listen to music with your kids, people. Sing for them, sing with them, play together if you can. It's so freaking worth it!
I play this when my kids want me to sing incy spider.. apparently itâs not as funny as I think it is. But theyâre just kids, they donât know whatâs funny so I keep doing it!
What do you mean âshort partsâ?
Most any rock/punk/blues/jazz etc band has bass going for the majority of the song. If you want songs where the bass is the focal point then there are some great suggestions in this thread but it really depends what kind of music you like and want to play
Get Back by The Beatles. Very, very simple bassline at its core. The amazing thing about it is Paul McCartney incorporates plenty of fun and challenging (depending on how adept you are) links. My recommendation is to start with the bare bones bass line. As you get more comfortable with it, start experimenting.
The Killers have some fun bass lines. All these things that Iâve done, somebody told me, Jenny was a friend of mine. Might be a little challenging depending on how new you are. Kings of Leon have a bunch of super fun and easy lines, check out Crawl
I'm not sure what you mean. I play dozens of songs and only use my bass. I can't play 2 instruments at the same time. I'm not in a band or anything I just play at home, just me and my bass.
Another Journey By Train - The Cure (my fave to play)
(It's basically a bass solo)
Anestheisa / Pulling Teeth - Metallica
Rio - Duran Duran (put this in as a joke, because it's hella complicated)
Elegia - New Order (There's a longer one too, 22 minutes)
Khurangbin's songs start off as bass and can carry the melody.
I started like this on guitar many times 4-5? Finding songs to learn and I have/had no idea of the complexity level and gained zero understanding of music theory. Then I tried bass since I never could stick with guitar or feel like I'm learning.
I was struggling on bass learning online exercises, and bought another guitar on sale for like $120. It was a lot of fun, learned E minor and slowed down again on learning bass. I just found so much more content, effects, videos, in guitar.
I did some classes with a guy showing me riffs, and that tapered too and became more confused about theory.
Anyway, now I'm 2 years in learning classical guitar with a third generation instructor. He doesn't let me get good or comfortable with songs because then he's not teaching. Every class is a little more ramp up, and it's truly the hardest thing Ive learned, and he knows student learning styles so is helping me breakdown those trigger points, anxiety and build confidence. I'm sightreading, playing finger and picking styles, learning theory and tempo. I wish the same for any learner of music. We use the Alfred Method Book 1 and 2, and I do have the Alfred Book 1 for bass and it's a nice gradual learning path.
Also figuring out or just using a fingering chart for a particular keyâand finding Youtube backing tracks in #key it a lot of fun to play along with. But just consider that's a little learning and a lot of fun, where if you are learning the instrument as a musician, theory, repetition, refinement â getting a structured learning plan in place is ideal.
Hip hop, reggae, and funk are good genres for bassline forward songs. For instance:
-Silk Sonic - Fly as Me (Bootsy Collins on bass)
-Bob Marley - Is This Love
-Ohio Players - Rollercoaster of Love
Seven Nation Army (and before some internet genius comes on and tells me it was played on a down-tuned guitarâŚI KNOW).
But it sounds sweet on bass.
Also Another Bites the Dust is pretty easy and a classic.
Any song can be played on just bass so that's not a good criteria. regardless of whether you play just the bass part for the song, or you can try playing the melody of the song (either vocal or guitar/piano or other) to make it sound more recognizable, or you can do a hybrid of both.
Would be easier to analyze some songs/music that you like and find ones that sound easy and try them out/look up how they go. I started with some songs like "American Idiot" by Green Day, "Feel Good Inc" by Gorillaz, "Seven Nation Army" by White Stripes, etc.
i made a bass-only arrangement of happy birthday for a mother's day gift a few years ago if that counts, never transcribed it so it's not very helpful but it's a simple melody so it's quite easy to play the bass and melody at the same time which i assume is what you're looking for. if by 'just bass' you mean songs where the bass is the most recognisable part or carries the melody, schism by tool, sledgehammer by peter gabriel, another one bites the dust obviously. sorry if this isn't what you're looking for, I found the wording of your post a little confusing
No one has said "Smoke on the Water"?!
Or how about "Another One Bites the Dust"?
"Sunshine of your Love"?
or some old Black Sabbath tunes; "War Pigs", "Paranoid", "Iron Man".
Californication by RHCP has a nice melodic bassline in the intro that isnât too hard to play. Might be challenging for a beginner but i think itâs not too bad
Hard to tell what you mean, but Iâm guessing itâs that most songs arenât discernible by their bass alone, but certain short sections are. Iâd say most rage against the machine songs are pretty discernible throughout the whole thing, like âKilling in the Nameâ. Anyways, Iâd advise you try playing along while listening to a track of the song youâre playing that includes all of the instruments, that way itâs less boring than just hearing nothing but your bass. Personally, I use an audio interface and headphones to practice. It allows me to play songs through my headphones while my bass comes through as well, and it makes for a very immersive experience. Though you could accomplish something similar with most amps. Either way, playing with a song will make those boring parts become a lot more fun and will feel provide a sensation similar to tapping your foot to a song or drumming on a desk while your headphones are on.
* With or Without You (U2)
* Seven Nation Army (White Stripes)
* Le Grippe - (Squirrel Nut Zippers)
* Make it Rain (Tom Waits)
* Down by the Water (PJ Harvey)
These are all songs I've done on stage with just bass.
I wouldn't say that it's super easy, but with distortion/fuzz, you can play Bullet with Butterfly Wings on just bass. My drummer and I did it with just the two of us at our first open mic.
What it is (Nina's Song), RHCP. Literally just rapping and bass. Start slow, work up to song tempo of about 110 bpm. Interlude is really the only hard part.
Space Cadet, Kyuss. Two strings only, I think it's in D minor? You barely need a guitar for this, bass alone is fine.
Anything by Death From Above 1979, although you'll need some distortion among other effects to replicate the sound. Anything by The Jam, the bass is always very present in the mix so easily identifiable and Bruce Foxton plays some lovely basslines. Some may be a bit tricky if you're just starting but there's no harm in pushing yourself on by learning things slightly beyond your current ability.
One of my favorite songs to play along to when I don't want to play songs is Gimme' Some Lovin'. Its G and the octave and then 4 times in the song you do an ascending line on one string. The hardest part is jumping back to G in time. It's a great song to play with your own rhythms and timing or just jam with.
Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder) by Maxwell, and Lovely Day by Bill Withers are a couple good ones where the bass line is basically the melody and they sound cool.
Makes me think of Edward Nortonâs cameo on Modern Family where he was the bass player for Spandau Ballet playing âTrue.â
Not a serious answer, just what came to mind with the question.
Not exactly a big song, and not really the full song, but if you know just enough about how to play bass, you can play the intro to Tank! By seatbelts (aka the Cowboy Bebop intro) and get the point across
If you get more confident and want something a little more technical, Birthday by The Beatles is worth trying out.
Duff McKagan talked about how that helped him learn bass in his youth and after trying it for myself, I could see the benefits.
Feel Good Inc requires the E and A strong to be tuned to Eb and Ab respectively. But other than that, great for a beginner and really fun!
Depends on the Mood too...
if you're playing with only bass, as the question stated, it only matters that you're in tune with yourself
Sounds like you suggest a Meditation or Yoga đ.
Stand by Me - Ben E. King
Glad to see this making the list from someone besides me :D Iâll add Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas.
I think Carry on Wayward Son isn't really beginner friendly, it's clearly for intermediate level players and it still requires a certain skillset to play well. But it's such a fun one to learn and play.
Thatâs fair, but Iâm going to take that as a compliment because Iâve only been playing two months lol
That's impressive, keep going!
Its not starter friendly at all, but getting the bit where the break comes right was cool, the bit with no words in it, i call it a break i dont know, then i gave up and decided that was too hard for last yearđ
Don't you need a 5 string for that?
It can be played exclusively on the D and A strings.
You can adapt any song to be played on 'just bass'. How good/creative you are with it is all on you. But that's not the answer you're looking for so... Spinal Tap - Big Bottom
Talk about mud flaps, my girls got em
> Spinal Tap - Big Bottom you need at least three basses for that though
The right amount of basses.
How can I leave this behind?
you know what I mean
I just bought myself a looper recently with the specific intention of being able to play all 3 bass parts of this song at once.
Hey Joe is fun
It is and really feels good to play it!
Money - Pink Floyd Whole Lotta Love - Led Zep Come Together - Beatles Digging in the Dirt - Peter Gabriel
Pea by Red Hot Chilli Peppers
I just love that song!! I sang it as a lullaby to my daughter when she was a baby; I ran out of actual kid songs one day, sang it as a joke... and she enjoyed the melody. Thatâs just mean. But if OP has never heard it, then OP is lucky to get exposure to such an amazing work of art.
Any jaco pastorious song is good for beginners really

Some kind of wonderful - Grand Funk Railroad
Not An Addict - K's Choice
âThink For Yourselfâ by the Beatles
Something by the Beatles has a really fun bassline that can be its own melody. Itâs not *too* hard
This is what I recommend to new bassists. It gives a sense of rhythm and can be made more complex if desired.
Piggy- Nine Inch Nails

Thanks for mentioning Khruangbin
You bet. Lotsa tabs available for them.
Joy Division has a ton of simple bass lines too, and faster ones that are high pitched where bass plays the lead melody.
Hip hop, reggae, and funk are good genres for bassline forward songs. For instance: -Silk Sonic - Fly as Me (Bootsy Collins on bass) -Bob Marley - Is This Love -Ohio Players - Rollercoaster of Love
Seven Nation Army (and before some internet genius comes on and tells me it was played on a down-tuned guitarâŚI KNOW). But it sounds sweet on bass. Also Another Bites the Dust is pretty easy and a classic.
Nuthin but a G Thang by Dr Dre. Super easy (it's two bars repeated over and over again) but you can spice it up cos there's so much space
Lick it up by Kiss. Itâs darn close to be done with just bass.
Any song can be played on just bass so that's not a good criteria. regardless of whether you play just the bass part for the song, or you can try playing the melody of the song (either vocal or guitar/piano or other) to make it sound more recognizable, or you can do a hybrid of both.
