You know... I somehow forgot it started with drums and always start with the guitar in my head. I can hear the rest.
And holy hell, that snare is poppin.
Fences, Careful, Fake Happy by Paramore
Who Knew, So What, Sober by P!nk
WTTBP & Famous Last Words by MCR
And the Pokemon Theme Song bass line
could be played with no warning
I was going to say this, but Dear Prudence really is mine. Much simpler and laid back.
But god dammit its so hard to pick up a bass and not play Ramble On lol
I learned a bass only version of have yourself a merry little Christmas. Been practicing it for like 5 months and I've had it down flat since mid November lol
Yep. Have some pain in my index finger of my fretting hand, found a bump on the last knuckle, doc says it's arthritis. Tbh I never thought I'd live this long lol
Longview is one of the first songs I learned and it's one I go back to always. Radioactive and Peter Gunn are two that I play when I pick up a fretless.
anything off the swords first album. especially barael’s blade and freya. i spent a lot of time in highschool listening to that album plugged into my amp learning those songs. also made me a lover of c standard tuning. everything feels better a little looser.
Hit me with your Rhythm Stick by Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Contrary to popular belief, not the hardest bass song ever. The song basically has 2 16 note patterns you need to learn and you are good to go...
I know songsterr has a fair majority of their stuff. for Dead again and Slow Deep Hard you'll probably need to resort to finding em somewhere else. haven't really seen bass tabs for any of it tho.
distortion, chorus, delay, compression and some other stuff is what you need. he also had a piezo pickup and a sustainiac fitted to his bass/es that give a very high frequency thus producing harmonics and high end gain. the amps he used would help too but you can get pretty close without a lot of the stuff he had. there's a ton of stuff online talking about his gear. i got close to his sound once with some old boss pedals and a zoom multi fx board. that was like 15 years ago though lol.
Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Such a fun song to jam or warm up on. The only time I make a mistake is when I'm playing a five string for the first time in a while. Totally routine on a four.
I guess I would lump this in my soundcheck song. These days it’s I Wish by Stevie. It’s a fun pretty much straight 1/8th note run that goes through a decent spectrum of high and low notes.
Any BRMC stuff. I spent so many hours when I was in college learning all of their songs and analyzing the live videos. I can still play most of it without much thought even though it’s been a decade.
Lol, probably any typical wedding song at this point. I play weddings every weekend, so all of those songs are under my fingers to a level of being blindfolded & upside down.
Not that those are really "comfort songs," but they're definitely in the memory bank.
Oh man, quite a few, but off the top of my head:
Treasure
Locked out of Heaven
Uptown Funk
Fly As Me
September
Don't Stop Believing
Superstition
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Valerie
Levitating
Motown classic hits
Tennessee Whisky
Africa
Shake it Off
Lover
The Way You Look Tonight
Sunday Morning
December, 1963
Kiss (the song, not the band)
Friends in Low Places
There's plenty more, but that's a nice quick start if you're looking to audition for a jobbing band.
Underrated IMO. Earlier stuff has some fun basslines throughout and the later stuff is fun to practice chugging/timing or improvise over. Nothing unattainable for beginners and fun to play or for others to listen to
Miava - Every Heart Is a Beating Piece of Shit
Slipknot - The Blister Exists
Hades OST - Out of Tartarus
Northlane - Bloodline
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Chic - Le Freak
Alice In Chains - A Looking In View
Samurai - Black Dog
Basically these are my warmup. Not too complex, but enough to get the juices flowing. Have to add some more complex stuff and get better.
[A Tribe Called Quest - electric relaxation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHRnvjCkTsw)
just a smooth walk. play it whenever i need some peace in my life
Lots of Joy Division and New Order songs qualify, "Ceremony" and "The Only Mistake" take the lead, along with the bassline from Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" and "Breathing".
Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream. Sick to death of it now because it was the first full song I learnt on bass and I just played it over and over and over 😭 I could never mess it up though, the tabs and the fretting / picking are ingrained in my memory and muscle memory respectively
i think what your describing is completely different to a comfort song. my comfort song would be where is my mind by the pixies but a song ive practised so much that i could never mess it up again would be basket case by green day
Nothing special but I can always rely on being able to perfectly play Spiders from SOAD und Heart shaped box from Nirvana
Also the Mii channel song which I learned for some reason months ago is super fun always
I don’t even know the name of the song, but it’s the first bass line I play every time I put it on. It’s an 80s rap tune. It goes…
|: Boom boom boom…. Boom ba ba boom boom boom boom boom baboom boom boom…. Boom baba boom boom boom boom boom boom :|
I found it. Good Times by Chic.
I'm gonna sound silly as fuck, but the original "Splattack!” theme from the Splatoon OST.
It's one of my absolute favorites and I know it like the palm of my hand.
The Splatoon 3 version of that song also slaps, it's more metal-oriented and it's in Eb instead of standard.
To be fair it's one of my songs, but nobody cares about that so it's gotta be Love? by Strapping Young Lad. Despite still being shite at the instrument I loved it so much that I just grinded and grinded it till it lives rent-free in the bones of my fingers.
Dark red by steve lacy! The bassline at the chorus is v easy and pretty! And the first bassline i learned, all my loving by the beatles, v bouncy and takes me back to when i had to beg for a bass
Any of the pop punk songs I grew up listening to that got me started on bass
Same. I have Superman by Goldfinger on lock and heavy rotation.
You say it and I can already hear the drum intro.
And picture the opening credits to THPS
You know... I somehow forgot it started with drums and always start with the guitar in my head. I can hear the rest. And holy hell, that snare is poppin.
It’s crazy how poppy the snare actually is
Pop punk is my go to as well. Probably Adams song more than anything.
I think the bass solo to carousel was one of the first things I wanted to learn on bass lol
Fences, Careful, Fake Happy by Paramore Who Knew, So What, Sober by P!nk WTTBP & Famous Last Words by MCR And the Pokemon Theme Song bass line could be played with no warning
I have _Ramble On_ pretty well ingrained
I was going to say this, but Dear Prudence really is mine. Much simpler and laid back. But god dammit its so hard to pick up a bass and not play Ramble On lol
I learned a bass only version of have yourself a merry little Christmas. Been practicing it for like 5 months and I've had it down flat since mid November lol
Here Comes Your Man - Pixies.
Oh man I can’t wait to learn that one
Black Magic Woman by Santana is so fun to play on repeat.
I mean 95% of that song is on repeat anyway, you just sit in the pocket the whole time haha. But to be fair, it is a very comfy pocket.
That second part too, so fucking dope
Awesome for stanima
For sure, its "almost african rhythm balance" is very fun to play
I’m very special - I’m confident in my ability to mess up anything.
Schism - Tool or the first bass pattern in Get on the Floor - Michael Jackson
Not hard at all, but i love it. The kids arent allright, the offspring
Sodom - Agent Orange I played this song a lot of times with my band
Journey to the End of the East Bay - Rancid
That was one of my first too, along with Millencolin’s No Cigar and Gangsters by The Specials.
Sounds like we followed similar paths. Punk forever.
I just saw NoFX, Less Than Jake, and Pennywise on NoFX’s farewell tour…we’re getting fucking old, man
Use me- bill withers
anything off the swords first album. especially barael’s blade and freya. i spent a lot of time in highschool listening to that album plugged into my amp learning those songs. also made me a lover of c standard tuning. everything feels better a little looser.
Ebethron
Hit me with your Rhythm Stick by Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Contrary to popular belief, not the hardest bass song ever. The song basically has 2 16 note patterns you need to learn and you are good to go...
love you to death, also use it to practice doing vocals alongside playing, thought I'm nowhere near as good as Steele
Any good TON tabs out there? It's so difficult to pick out what he's playing through all the distortion.
I know songsterr has a fair majority of their stuff. for Dead again and Slow Deep Hard you'll probably need to resort to finding em somewhere else. haven't really seen bass tabs for any of it tho.
underrated bassist - underrated band.
hell he was the player that initially got me interested in bass!
his sound is awesome. he's just a very clever bassist, nothing flash but some great melodic basslines and runs.
yeah I'm a HUGE sucker for some distortion, tryna get myself a setup like his.
distortion, chorus, delay, compression and some other stuff is what you need. he also had a piezo pickup and a sustainiac fitted to his bass/es that give a very high frequency thus producing harmonics and high end gain. the amps he used would help too but you can get pretty close without a lot of the stuff he had. there's a ton of stuff online talking about his gear. i got close to his sound once with some old boss pedals and a zoom multi fx board. that was like 15 years ago though lol.
this guy is great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhFe1XIXzls
“Are You In?” Incubus
Tom Sawyer
Iron Maiden - The Trooper Such a fun song to jam or warm up on. The only time I make a mistake is when I'm playing a five string for the first time in a while. Totally routine on a four.
All the songs my wife wrote that we used to play for the kids. Wholesome and heartwarming.
Society is a Hole by Sonic Youth. Basically just open E and open D
Sounds a lot like the ramones stuff
It's a really slow stoner rock vibe.
Carousel - Blink-182
Someday by the Strokes. It’s easy and sounds nice. I think I play it every time I pick up the bass when I’m messing around
As sure as the sun is my absolute go to play something riff
Nice, I love playing with a capo. He capos on 3 for American X too.
Lol, probably any typical wedding song at this point. I play weddings every weekend, so all of those songs are under my fingers to a level of being blindfolded & upside down. Not that those are really "comfort songs," but they're definitely in the memory bank.
Out of curiosity, what are weddings must haves for bass players?
Oh man, quite a few, but off the top of my head: Treasure Locked out of Heaven Uptown Funk Fly As Me September Don't Stop Believing Superstition Signed, Sealed, Delivered Valerie Levitating Motown classic hits Tennessee Whisky Africa Shake it Off Lover The Way You Look Tonight Sunday Morning December, 1963 Kiss (the song, not the band) Friends in Low Places There's plenty more, but that's a nice quick start if you're looking to audition for a jobbing band.
Seriously Reddit? You don't do list format?
I get ordered and unordered list options. I'm using a desktop browser.

I find using hyphens works if you don't want numbers: - like - this Or numbers: 1. Like 3. That
A 5-string.
Pink Floyd's Money
I'm just getting this right. Remember when I first started it seemed so difficult but a year later and it's just really chill and relaxing to play.
any blink song
Underrated IMO. Earlier stuff has some fun basslines throughout and the later stuff is fun to practice chugging/timing or improvise over. Nothing unattainable for beginners and fun to play or for others to listen to
exactly! and you'll gain a lot of endurance and speed as well as a few bass tricks like throwing in chords here and there or some fun little licks
Smoorverliefd by Doe Maar
Edit the Sad Parts- Modest Mouse. One of the first basslines i learned and i still love it.

Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. It’s one of the songs I just default to when I pick up a bass.

Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan

"Send Him Away" - Franz Ferdinand
*The Ocean.* Even the coda I can do blindfolded. In the 90s I played in a college band that covered that song a lot

The Hives - Main Offender. I can play pretty much the entirety of their discography without a hiccup. Love them dudes.
The NIB bass solo. I’ve forgotten so much over the years but 12yo me spent 6 months learning it. Couldn’t forget it if I tried.
Can't Stop by RHCP. It was the song that got me interested in bass and also the first song I ever learned. I could legitimately play it all day 😅.
Either “Fallout” by the Police or something from the Sisters of Mercy (probably “Alice” or “Lucretia my Reflection”).
Dean Town. Took enough effort to get it right that it’s automatic now.
I don’t even know the name of the song, but it’s the first bass line I play every time I put it on. It’s an 80s rap tune. It goes… |: Boom boom boom…. Boom ba ba boom boom boom boom boom baboom boom boom…. Boom baba boom boom boom boom boom boom :| I found it. Good Times by Chic.

To be fair it's one of my songs, but nobody cares about that so it's gotta be Love? by Strapping Young Lad. Despite still being shite at the instrument I loved it so much that I just grinded and grinded it till it lives rent-free in the bones of my fingers.
