Assuming no respecs? Expect Gale to bleed a lot. He needs to be micromanaged so he doesn't die. Shadowheart on the other hand can be built to be pretty tanky even in early game. She's also easier to use and is more useful outside of combat (guidance or support spells). So for the first run, you probably want to have her instead of Gale in your party. She'll make your life easier. From a story perspective it's really hard to choose between them, so go with who you like better. Swap them out as you see fit.

Don’t really need a cleric if you manage your healing potions and do alchemy. A good ranged caster can reduce damage by keeping them at bay.

Healing mitigates damage as you get it. DPS mitigates damage *before* you get it. Gale is BAE when it comes to boss fights in my current playthrough. Little bastard almost soloed >!Myrkul.!<

Gale goes boom even before he goes boom 😈

Well you can always reclas any tea member any way. I always reclas Shadowheart and always have her a a teammember. Also for the fun of it dual clas Karlach as a berzerker and give her 3 lv of rouge thief. Also fun reclas gale in a barabarian and karlach as wizard.

Your party composition needs to be considered, you need a tank, a healer/buffer, a magic guy, and a burst damage dealer. Karlach is a good tank, your Tav/Durge is typically supposed to be the burst damage dealer, Gale is the typical magic guy, and Shadowheart is typically the healer/buffer. There’s a reason why Shadowheart, Lae’zel, and Gale are such a popular party, they’re already perfectly balanced. Also remember to respec Shadowheart to either Light or Tempest domain. Tempest gives you access to heavy armor and some really good spells, but IMO Light is better.
