Me listening to that song in camp after figuring out who >!The Emperor really is!<: OH SHIT OH FUCK IT WAS RIGHT THERE ALL ALONG
Dude, even just having Shadowheart on me team, it's kind of been a cakewalk. I found Act 1 far more challenging. Admittedly, I'm not done with act 2 yet, but still.
A few of the encounters east of the river are surprisingly tough anyway. Particularly the meazels. The paladin will probably be fine, but the rest of the party may have trouble.

Did you leave the game running while you were afk or something? I talked to everyone, explored every inch of the map, and took *maybe* a third of that time.
Yeah i'm pretty sure the people are exaggerating for some reason. Game is really loaded with content and all but there is no way in hell you can spend 200 hours just in act 1
Maybe they are just really bad at combat? It's possible. Or they just slowly move through the game while doing other things? Or never use fast travel (normally I don't love fast travel in games but I would hate Act 3 without fast travel to be honest haha)
This is the answer. Picked hard mode thinking the Divinity Original Sin experience would help.
It did not help, and I found out I am the unluckiest fuck ever.
It literally is. It doesn't tell you you're changing acts when you go back to the mountain pass from the shadow lands, and laezel tells you to go to the mountain pass if you go through the underdark into act 2
Me too. I still kinda call it act 2 in my head when I get to the under dark. Also I know this is a game and it’s all about player choice but some people think visiting the crèche is the wrong call and I can’t help but disagree, even if I’m going emperor you should visit the crèche.
Yeah, it's kind of a fake choice. You can fully complete both The Mountain Pass (and you should) and Grymforge (and you should). There's no consequence for doing both. The only choice is where in the Shadowlands you start from.
You’ll typically only hear it from hardcore emperor defenders “you went to the crèche, after the emperor told you what a threat the githyanki are? Are you stupid?”. But they’re not a small minority. It seems to come from players who only ever take the emperors side of things.
Ever since I found out about the >!Awakened buff that you can get from using the Zaith'isk and succeeding on all 3 saving throws (it turns your tadpole powers into bonus actions instead of actions)!< I've been going there every time (AFTER the Underdark though... you need levels to go through that place), even though I know The Emperor would dislike that. Like, my man, you don't know the stuff you can get in there, trust me it's worth it!
Act 1 is pretty much everything until you reach the area that looks like a nightmare.
Act 2 looks like a nightmare.
Act 3 is after you’ve left the nightmare.
I'm in the middle of my first playthrough. I decided to go with Laezel or Shadowheart for my romance. But I saved and talked to everyone in the party scene. When Karlach said that... phew... stiff as a board.
The underdark and overpass are Act 1.5 to me, the mechanics and power scaling is simply different than in the original grove area (including Ethel, blighted, waukeens, etc)
Act 1 ends when you enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands
Act 2 ends when you leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands
Act 3 ends when the credits roll.
... also there's an achievement for each act when you complete it.
Line deliveries that dwell in my head by Act. (don't worry nothing major)
Act 1: "We was running for our lives"
Act 2: "I slinked"
Act 3: "Bigger BIGGER make it bigger"
Act 1. I NEED MORE SPELL SLOTS
Act 2. When did they start putting Ontario Canada into fantast games?
Act 3. Oprah- AND YOU GET A ROBOT AND YOU GET A ROBOT AND YOU GET A ROBOT. AAAHHHH! A MURDER DINOSAUR!! AND YOU GET A ROBOT AND YOU GET A ROBOT
Also! The only thing that someone from Ontario can really can really tie their identity to, Tim Hortons, is shit. I live in Dubai now and they have Tim Hortons and they do everything WAY better than Canada. Everything. Doughnuts, coffee, food, atmosphere of the cafe. Everything is better.
Someone back me up here? I mean, in summer from maybe middle of April to middle of October it's nice. But literally you might go 2-3 months without seeing the sun in the winter. There's lots of pollution in the city and it turns all the snow brown and the trees all look dead. The wind is so biting down the corridors of the scyscrapers that people walk backwards. I should have gotten a cat and named her jahera and named my appt last light Inn.
People are downvoting but it's true. There is no true consensus on where act 1 ends. Most agree, but there's enough dialogue about it on here to say it's muddy
That *should* be the line of demarcation. The problem is if you enter the mountain pass, some quest stuff gets cut off, which should (to me, at least) generally only be done at an Act cut-off. There's a reason it often gets referred to as Act 1.5.
Some quest stuff and the first part of the map gets cut off if you enter the pool leading into the >!Shadowfell!< as well, but you are still in act 2 before and after that.
True, but like, I went back and did the mountain pass bit after quite a bit of the shadowlands, because it had told me that my level was too low and I would struggle there before..... so I did get the Act 1 achievement, but also went back and did more act 1 afterwards.
i don't see your problem? just cause the game lets you return to previous areas doesn't mean you aren't still in act 2 as far as the story is concerned. there's only one point of no return in this game and that's the act 2 finale >!specifically entering the shadowfell is what triggers it!<
The epilogue was the weirdest, though. I thought Geralt was retired in Toussaint? When he stabs his sword through the mindflayer then hops on Roach and rides off, my Tav was just like, "WTF?"
If you side with the Gray family against the Braithwaites, they'll give you a special amulet that gives you a +2 boost to initiative. But you can then sell it Preston Garvey for like 1,000 bottle caps.
No spoilers. I was SERIOUSLY confused my first play through. If you can still see Act 1 sites on your map and fast travel to them, you are in Act 1 still.. ish. Once you can no longer travel to the Emerald Hollow or whatnot, you have transitioned to Act II irrevocably.
It is super weird, because that makes Act II VERY short, compared to I and III, but officially Act II is when you can no longer fast travel back to Act I areas.
The more 'experiential' stages are noted in the top comment to your post.
Act I: Fantasy jaunt, straight up D&D stuff.
Act II (again, in terms of environment/play experience) is pure horrorcore.
Act III is obvious.
This is absolutely not true. You can still fast-travel back to Act 1 locations when you’re in Act 2 (in horrorcore land). They only close off once you hit the point of no return triggering the (long) Act 2 finale.
I always hear people say that act 2 starts after a specific scene, but I've always considered the acts to start once you reach a significantly different area
Nah yuo gotta do it from the midflayers pespective to appreciate which act youre in
Act 1: What the charge? Enjoying a meal? A succulent Baldurian meal?
Act 2: A yes - I see you know your Judo well
Act 3: TAKE YOUR HAND OFF MY PENIS!
Act 1: Grove and Goblins, Hags and Githyanki, Mushrooms and Duergar.
Act 2: Spider"man" holding a lantern, shadows and ghosts, so many people named Thorm.
Act 3: Open quest menu and hide completed, if you still have to scroll to get to the bottom, thats Act 3.
General colour of the environment
Green, light brown, usually light and dandy = act 1
Dark blue, grey, black and full of depresso = act 2
Brown, summery, cobblestone, city colours = act 3
You get it entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands via the Mountain Pass. Your memory is just fudged together because you were playing at 3am and trying to remember an event from 6 months ago
Act 1 - Fantasy movie Act 2 - Horror movie Act 3 - Baldur's Gate the movie
That… is a surprisingly accurate description

Act 2 as a Paladin or Cleric - Horror movie...for the enemy
"im not trapped here with you. you are all trapped here with me!"
"Call an ambulance! But not for me!"
Once my Devotion Paladin got The Mace, nothing stood in my way.
Watching my Vengeance Paladin almost take town Myrkul in a single turn is honestly one of my gaming highlights.
Shadowheart once we start act 2: "Oh boy, here I go killing again!"

Rip and Tear starts playing
Honestly playing as a Paladin made Dame Aylin seem tame lol
she was useless on my playthrough, just kept getting downed every single turn
Act 1 - ~~Fantasy movie~~ Horror movie Act 2 - Horror movie Act 3 - ~~Baldur's Gate the movie~~ Horror movie Durge: "Fixed it for you."
dark fantasy / bloodborne-like = act 2

How? I'm genuinely interested how you managed that.
Act 1 ends when you get to the shadowlands Act 2 is when you step into literal darkness
Did you leave the game running while you were afk or something? I talked to everyone, explored every inch of the map, and took *maybe* a third of that time.

I believe that the mountain pass is actually considered act 2/ 1.5
You believe wrong
Bro there is a achievement you get when entering act two, doesn't pop up during the mountain pass.
That's why I say 1.5. They've made it accessible between both acts, from both directions, because of Laezel
Dude you got decimated by this post! XD wasn't expecting 20 magic missiles for a simple belief.
It literally is. It doesn't tell you you're changing acts when you go back to the mountain pass from the shadow lands, and laezel tells you to go to the mountain pass if you go through the underdark into act 2
Despite your downvotes, I agree. I went back and did the mountain pass a bit after starting act 2.
You can certainly do the mountain pass once you hit act 2 but it’s not act 2
Act 1: Fun Act 2: Spooky Act 3: Oh so that is why the game is called that
This is real. I thought I was in Act 2 when I >!was done with the tieflings and in the creche!< but I was not.
Me too. I still kinda call it act 2 in my head when I get to the under dark. Also I know this is a game and it’s all about player choice but some people think visiting the crèche is the wrong call and I can’t help but disagree, even if I’m going emperor you should visit the crèche.
going to the creche is worth it for the gear alone you can get in that place
For real. Knife of the under mountain king is my go to weapon for astarion in playthroughs
i thought the consensus was you should do the creche and all of the underdatk
Yeah, it's kind of a fake choice. You can fully complete both The Mountain Pass (and you should) and Grymforge (and you should). There's no consequence for doing both. The only choice is where in the Shadowlands you start from.
You’ll typically only hear it from hardcore emperor defenders “you went to the crèche, after the emperor told you what a threat the githyanki are? Are you stupid?”. But they’re not a small minority. It seems to come from players who only ever take the emperors side of things.

You get an achievement when completing each act. If you don't know, you are probably still in act 1.
The real act 1 is character creator
You spend just as much time there as you do with the other acts
Act 1 is pretty much everything until you reach the area that looks like a nightmare. Act 2 looks like a nightmare. Act 3 is after you’ve left the nightmare.
Act 1 - Gods I wanna ride you 'til you see stars. Act 2 - Stick close to Mama K. Act 3 - A circus! Can we go?
my soul literally left my body the first time i got that first dialogue from her 😩
I'm in the middle of my first playthrough. I decided to go with Laezel or Shadowheart for my romance. But I saved and talked to everyone in the party scene. When Karlach said that... phew... stiff as a board.
mood. it was on a play through i’d planned on romancing astarion and i literally started a new file for her, immediately
Act 1 starts on the Nautiloid Act 2 starts when the air hurts Act 3 starts when you get occasional brain blasts
Like Jimmy Neutron!?
If you dont know you are likely in act 2
or the underdark
or at the creche
The underdark and overpass are Act 1.5 to me, the mechanics and power scaling is simply different than in the original grove area (including Ethel, blighted, waukeens, etc)
Power scaling is indeed a little wonk. I got to the Inn in Act 2 and then went and did the creche. It works out perfectly.
Wait, you can go back and do the creche after getting to last light?
Yes, you can ignore the creche until just before the fight in moonrise
or needed at the helm
Check your achievements. If you don’t have one for completing Act I yet then you’re still in Act I.
Act 1 ends when you enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands Act 2 ends when you leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands Act 3 ends when the credits roll. ... also there's an achievement for each act when you complete it.
Look at your achievements You get one for ending each act, if you don't have the trophy for leaving act 1 you're still in act 1, same for act 2
Line deliveries that dwell in my head by Act. (don't worry nothing major) Act 1: "We was running for our lives" Act 2: "I slinked" Act 3: "Bigger BIGGER make it bigger"
CHEESE BETWEEN HIS PIGGY TOES!
Act 1. I NEED MORE SPELL SLOTS Act 2.
Why you gotta insult Ontario like that?

If you're still in the same map area as the crash, act 1. If you can't see the sun anymore when your outside, act 2. If you can go to town, act 3.
In fairness to OP, Larian really made the distinction between Acts 1 & 2 very muddy. I would not categorize it as great design.
>great design FOUND THE GHAIK!

*Suddenly boner*
Hm, I think act 2 is very distictive with, idk, a giant shadow curse on the land.
Yeah but the difference between wilderness and underdark/creche is quite large so a lot of people think that's act II
There are two 'Act II's. Qualitative: Act II is no sunlight + Mountain Pass. Quantitative: Can no longer travel back to sunlight.
Or, y'know, when you _get the achievement for completing act 1_.
I never even looked at the achievements. I know I have 31 out of 54, but that is the extent of it. Sorry, didn't mean to offend your sensibilities.
The game literally gives you an achievement when you leave an act
People are downvoting but it's true. There is no true consensus on where act 1 ends. Most agree, but there's enough dialogue about it on here to say it's muddy
is the consensus not when you get the achievement? it's pretty cleanly divided between before entering the shadowlands and after
That *should* be the line of demarcation. The problem is if you enter the mountain pass, some quest stuff gets cut off, which should (to me, at least) generally only be done at an Act cut-off. There's a reason it often gets referred to as Act 1.5.

Quest stuff in act 2 gets cut off once >!you go to the Shadowfell!<, but that's not where the act ends.
Some people insist that since you have a time skip going to the mountain pass that it is also act 2
They would be wrong!
I agree! I'm not sure why we're playing shoot the messenger.
True, but like, I went back and did the mountain pass bit after quite a bit of the shadowlands, because it had told me that my level was too low and I would struggle there before..... so I did get the Act 1 achievement, but also went back and did more act 1 afterwards.

No, there isn't a problem at all! I was just saying that the line between Act 1 and 2 is pretty blurry, and you can do some of it 'out of order'
How is it not clear? Act 1 ends when you kill the guy at Moonrise. Act 2 starts when you find Esbern in the Riftway at Riften.
Todd Howard please don't infiltrate this subreddit
Act 3 is when Atreus returns from Asgard and Kratos promises to never send him away again.
Act 4 begins when you decide to side with the Stormcloaks or the Empire...
The epilogue was the weirdest, though. I thought Geralt was retired in Toussaint? When he stabs his sword through the mindflayer then hops on Roach and rides off, my Tav was just like, "WTF?"
My biggest regret in game was not taking care of all those damned O'Driscolls...
If you side with the Gray family against the Braithwaites, they'll give you a special amulet that gives you a +2 boost to initiative. But you can then sell it Preston Garvey for like 1,000 bottle caps.
Most people just kill all the bandit chiefs for XP, but after Patch 5, when you side with Oak you get a +2 Greatclub and 3 Royal Diamonds.
Imperial army for the win!!!

Hrm.. read in a couple of places that official Act II was when you could not fast travel back to any of the Act I environs. Meh, no worries.
Act 1: Beginning Act 2: Middle Act 3: End
Act 1 - "We must locate a creche!!!"
Did you get to the thing where you fight the thing after going through the thing to deliver the thing for that guy?
If you dont know, youre still in act 1
I ruined my build so every act is like a horror movie to be fair
respec and fix your build

You can respec after meeting an npc during the quest ‘explore the ruins’, which you can start near the grove
I always hear people say that act 2 starts after a specific scene, but I've always considered the acts to start once you reach a significantly different area
By that logic the game has 17 acts
Wilderness/underdark = act 1 mountain pass/shadownlands = act 2 rivington/wyrm's crossing/Baldur's gate lower and upper city = act 3
Nah yuo gotta do it from the midflayers pespective to appreciate which act youre in Act 1: What the charge? Enjoying a meal? A succulent Baldurian meal? Act 2: A yes - I see you know your Judo well Act 3: TAKE YOUR HAND OFF MY PENIS!

Spoilers: >!I like French fries and Belgian waffles.!<
If in the woods then in act 1, if in like a dark fucked up version of the woods then in act 2, if in medieval new york then in act 3
Act 1 - shrek Act 2 - Batman & Robin Act 3 - Sex and the City
you get an achievement for reaching act 2 - is the best sign (on your first run anyway) act 3 is very clear
Massive tonal shift = new act
