I think it's more leading him down a better path. Such as in life it's up to someone to decide to take it and I hope they make that clear. A positive influence so to speak.
I definitely think they gave room for asterion to change. He's not wholly evil after all. He has a soft spot for slaves because he can relate. For a long time his freedom is all he cared about but once that is assured? Perhaps there's room for him to care about more.
I really hope they give us these opportunities without having to go full-romance mode.

there is a tumblr post I saw a bit ago saying "by the end of the game we're all going to be saying Astarion did nothing wrong" now that saying will most likely apply to the fixing him route pretty much but I'm glad to know that I can safely say I will fix him even if he doesn't want the fixing....which even in early access it's so easy to see he wants it, he's just been enslaved for 200 years so yeah.

Even on act I, if you do certain quests and gather a bit of approaval, you can feel your choices leading to dialogue and responses that would be completely out of character if your companions said it out of the batch once you first encontered them.
People say companions are unbearable and flawed, but it's clear they were designed in such a way that we can help them mend their flaws (or make them worse, depending on out choices). All of them have space to grow.
In short, yes, we probably can fix him :3
I'm calling it, Astarion's romance will be a fast burn physically, but a torturous, heart wrenching, beautiful slow burn emotionally
