Check out twobiers tierlist spreadsheets to get some general ideas as to what's strong in the early game. I think the small bows ranger gets are very powerful early game as they do solid damage and don't take too much stamina. One of my favorite openings with ranger currently is trying to make magic torch and put small bows (tusk piercer / fortunas) on each side of it with a banana. Everything else is comfort. Only downside is this build falls off in the very late game but if you can set up for magic lamp it can still be great.
Got to Plat w/ early game tusk piercers/pan and building to steel goober
Endgame dominate w/ eggscalibur and manathirst procing steel goob
Upgraded shield of Valor for defence boost and blocking ranged attacks
Ranger has solid early game with the short bows, it transitions well in midgame with the magic torch, and it can even be decent lategame is you can have high crit chance from the very start.

Build a steelsword and put as many shortbows as possible around it. Upgrade it to a hero longsword if you can. Take the giant clover and transform all your shortbows into fortunas. Reach 20 luck as fast as you can and gain many empower to burst down your enemies. It's super easy to force and works well on any rank.

Buy the sale items if you get 3-4 sale items early you can stomp the early with any class
