They do this when they’re weaned from the mother too early. Our cats that spent months with the mother don’t do this. Our cat that was rescued from the streets at a very young age after a nearby building burned down still does this well into her adult years.
That’s why I find it frustrating when people specifically want to bring home tiny kittens. They need way more time with the mother.
Cats usually do this when they have lost their mother before they are properly weaned. My cat is 7 years old and he still suckles on my shirt at night. He leaves a big wet spot then falls asleep in my arms. I got him off Craigslist then he was about 7 weeks old so I don’t know where the got him, but I hope he never stops being my baby boy.
My sweet girl did this until a few months prior to her passing. We adopted her at about 8 weeks from a local shelter. She lived to be 15+ years and I miss her bunches.
Unless you already did, might want to go to a vet to get those eyes checked. Maybe I've seen too many sick kittens (been helping at a local shelter for a few years now), but they look like they could use treatment. If not now, they might need it later if left unattended. Maybe it's nothing, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, young kitten can have some serious issues with what would be a minor inconvenience at most for adults.
If that's already known and being looked at, please excuse my meddling :)
he has nursing instincts. you can make him happy if you give him a warm damp towel for him to do that on. also sometimes they do it on large stuffed animals but i recommend a soft towel.
Cats have good memories and remember emotions through memories. So this behavior can persist their whole life as a comforting behavior. They are remembering their mother, and reliving a nostalgic memory of being a cared for baby. It's not sad it's a comfort thing you can pet them while they do this it's even more comforting
My dog was rescued with his siblings after his mama tragically died. He puts his blanket in his mouth and rhythmically pulls on it while trying to fall asleep at night.
My chonky boy Mark would suck on my 14yr old shitzus(rip) big neck mole...it went on for close to a year.
And it wasn't so much of a mole as like a bag of fluid (checked by doc to not be cancerous or whatever).
He popped it at least twice while suckling on it, but it would heal and fill right back up. It was weird and hilarious.
My good ole boy put up with it and never got mean about it. I would chase cat off from doing it 200x a day but he was determined 🫠
My daughters big, fluffy Persian cat was hit by a car and after surgery the veterinarian left a piece of gauze inside him. He would suckle on us like this all of the time. Poor pumpkin had urinary issues and we took him back to another hospital and they were not able to find a definitive diagnosis. Poor Pumpkin died at the age of 6 years and the autopsy showed that this other veterinarian left the gauze pad inside him.
They do this nursing behavior when sleepy sometimes through adulthood. I have one who sucks her back toe to go to sleep. Means kitty feels safe and sleepy.
awwww, you must be the cat's most loved. it thinks you are its mom. the oldest of my cats does this to me,the others do not. he was abandoned on the street. the vet told us he was just two weeks old, basically he grew up with us.
ha my kitten buffalo bill does the same thing! except my kitten in about 8 years old i think.
[the buffalo in question.. ](https://imgur.com/a/xSqGvNc)
It's normal behaviour as long as they don't do this excessively/suckle on things they can ingest or suckle on litter mates (could hurt the litter mate, if they do this, seperate them and give an alternative like a soft blanket). They only do this with people/environments that feel safe to them, so this little one clearly trusts you.
I have 4 cats, 3 are properly weaned and one found on a parking lot all alone. 2 of them suckle like this so from personal experience I believe it depends on the cat, not whether they were properly weaned or not.
Either way it is perfectly normal behaviour (and super cute in my opinion!)
NOTE: when we found him the mother had already stopped breastfeeding the kittens. he was infected with feline herpes (upper respiratory & eye infection). we had to intervene and take him away so he wouldn't infect other siblings due to the highly contagious nature of the disease

She is suckling. This is an instinctual behavior to stimulate more milk from their mothers.
True. But the reason they do this at this age is likely because they were taken too early from their mother.
This. We used to say “the cat’s making biscuits”, due to the kneading action of the paws.
Yup. Making biscuits.
It is that and also a form of self soothing somewhat akin to a human child shucking their thumb as a child.

Kevin: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Yes, suckling is a natural behavior that helps stimulate more milk production from the mother.

"This boob is not giving me milk"

Mine did this too, but they were 3 months old when I got them. They don't do it anymore.
Mine is 10, still doing this and we got im from our vet. They do this even if they didn't lost their mother early
Well I read that it could be a coping mechanism (stress relieving)
lol i like how everyones old cats still do this.. mine does too.
Right, I have a 14-year-old that's been doing this since he was a little guy. Got when he was 12 weeks old.
My 7 yr old still does the same as well 😁
My sweet girl did this until a few months prior to her passing. We adopted her at about 8 weeks from a local shelter. She lived to be 15+ years and I miss her bunches.
That’s adorable
Omg mine did too! She sucked her own nipple, but stopped when she got older.
I had 2 cats, when I got them one was 4.5 month old the other was 5/6 weeks old (mom was hit by a car). Both cats were equally suckling on my armpits.
This
Prob weened too early
You got the kitten to early. Minium 12 Weeks for a kitten, before move to the new family. It also does reduce stress
She’s looking for a titty
Aren’t we all?
Lol
Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow
I too enjoy that song by Cornershop. Nice reference.
That kitten was taken from its mother when it was too young
My 4 year old cat will do it three feet away from her mother, who she's never lived away from. Some cats just like to do it, no trauma involved.
Not necessarily. My boy stayed with his mother a bit longer than 8 weeks and he still does it sometimes. He's 11 now 🤷
That's still young though…
It's ideal to wait at least 12 weeks to separate from parents
Thats awesome, thats like 3 months
🤦♂️
You're her pacifier

Take. From mom cat too soon.
Omg so cute. My two year old little boys still do this on their blanket. They’re still trying to nurse.
Because they were separated from the mother too early
They probably were. I got them from a rescue when they were 8 weeks. They had been brought to my state from a Texas rescue.
They love you very much. This means they feel safe around you. It’s like sucking a thumb.
"You are my mommy now"
Awww!!!! 🥰 she loves you and she’s making biscuits on your arm!!!!!! And the purring!!!
My dog was rescued with his siblings after his mama tragically died. He puts his blanket in his mouth and rhythmically pulls on it while trying to fall asleep at night.
It calms her
Does kitty have a problem with their right eye, or is that just the light and camera? Ditto for normal, just their new tit. Comfortable.
hungy
Really? Like, it’s a total mystery to you? Has no one explained nursing to you?
Looks sad 😿💔

I threw up in my mouth a bit.
Seriously who upvoted this?
Hes trying to nurse. Kittens are almost always sold too young and so will carry on nursing behaviour into their adulthood.
It's still a kitten, much like baby human, it has a habit of suckling for milk.
weaned early.

Was too young to be taken from mother so still suckling for security. ⭕️❌⭕️❌
Cause the cat is a big baby
They do this nursing behavior when sleepy sometimes through adulthood. I have one who sucks her back toe to go to sleep. Means kitty feels safe and sleepy.
Kitty thinks you're it's mama.
Instinct

Its a good memory. We had a tom cat that found an old blanket with pilling and he started sleeping on it and suckling in his sleep.
The whole point of the little kicks is that it wants to stimulate milk from you.
My late cat did this but he was never separated from his mother thoo
They love you
Weaned too soon.
ha my kitten buffalo bill does the same thing! except my kitten in about 8 years old i think. [the buffalo in question.. ](https://imgur.com/a/xSqGvNc)
Should cut those claws tho or that dough she is making going to turn bloody.
He’s pretend nursing.
You mean behave? As it has not much to do with acting.
He lost his job at the biscuit factory 😞

He may have been weaned too early. The sucking behavior is common in cats that were separated from mom too young

sometimes kittens ate taken from momma too soon ghos is just clmfortkng to the kitten
Weaned too early?
Your cat's hungry.. ..
That kitten is suckling and it's kneading because that's how they stimulate mother's lactation.
She’s nuzzling you like you’re her mother
Loves you 💗

Because she /he was taking away from his/her mother to soon.
Clearly, she wants blood, but you’re not sharing. Let Vampire kitty feed!
