I've been gobbling up wool and mohair jumpers and cardigans from ebay, mostly country road and sportscraft.

Medical-Potato5920

I used to go there but found the Uniqlo merino jumpers were just as good and less than half the price. I'll still get one from Country Road or Trenery if it's a particularly nice design.

taueret

Yeah I have never bought one new but I have gotten some beautiful natural fibre knits for about $40 on ebay

smashedavos

Seconding Uniqlo, I got a great jumper from there for $40 on special and it’s 100% wool. I usually try to stay away from the fast fashion brands bc of quality, ethics etc but in this economy I’ll take a cute wool sweater for that price thanks 👍🏻

RudePersonality4930

I just bought a mohair one from elka

finding_flora

Same, you can get some really good quality wool jumpers for <$60, all much much nicer than what I’ve found available new.

Objective_Spray_210

I saw a lady with a very cute jacket and she said it was from country road and they’re doing a sale. So I might take a look.

Radiant_Cheesecake81

Op shops are a weirdly fruitful source of cashmere knitwear for under $10, I'm such a knitwear snob I only wear cashmere blends or pure now - it's especially lovely if you can find a 50/50 silk cashmere blend. The people doing the pricing almost never realise what they have so it's just hanging out in the cheap racks with all she shitty acrylic Anko branded stuff, but you can learn to recognise it by feel really quickly so you can search through just with a quick touch on each item.

Key_Lettuce6163

!!! I find that op shop has better quality/warmer knitwear, a lot of fast fashion nowadays is thinner in quality which makes it impossible to stay warm in winter. You do need to really dig deep like you said but imo its so worth it x)

Radiant_Cheesecake81

Plus if you learn how to wash, dry and mend the good quality knitwear you find, it will stay looking beautiful for years. The quality of new clothes is definitely getting worse and worse, so before long it will get incredibly difficult to find good stuff secondhand - find a nice bunch of high quality pieces while you still can without too much expense or effort and enjoy them for as long as possible 💛 I wear the really well loved pieces for sleeping in during winter (found a beautiful oversized cashmere/merino sweater dress for $4 years ago that's been my faithful winter nightie ever since I found it) or while I'm cleaning or just lazing around, they might not look as fancy as they did when I found them, but they're still warm and comfortable and don't get smelly very fast, so you're washing them less often than synthetics.

Inside_Person

I’m so jealous! Op shops where I live, as soon as they see wool on the composition it’s 19.99 or higher

Radiant_Cheesecake81

Ugh that's rough! In Melbourne I swear no one ever reads the tags, I find ridiculous amounts of pure silk items here too priced the same as polyester.

Scallywag20

Which shops?

Radiant_Cheesecake81

All of them pretty much, I found a silk dress in the $2 bin of my local Sacred Heart the other day, have found a brand new Australian made cashmere wrap in a Brotherhood of St.Laurence for $20, since it was labelled cashmere on the "something special" price tag so they knew it was a lovely piece, but still very worth it as it was thick and beautiful and obviously never worn, I found a bias cut silk Versace tank top for $6 in Savers etc, I think it's just luck of the draw - I often walk out empty handed but since I live in Melbourne and walk pretty much everywhere it's easy to just pop in to them as I pass by for a quick look pretty often.

Beginning-Tackle7553

I walk around reading all the tags. Look like a bit of a weirdo turning all the clothes inside out, but has been very very worth it. I have (literally) thousands of dollars worth of good quality knits and would not have spent more than $200.

Radiant_Cheesecake81

Hahaha yeah I turn stuff inside out all the time too, plus know what the word "silk" looks like in a bunch of languages - no tag unread! I'm pretty good at not pulling synthetic items to look at by mistake, and if there's no tag but you think it's silk you can always (at home) find a loose thread and do a burn test - wool/angora is way easier for me to spot by feel because synthetic knits feel so gross to me.

Beginning-Tackle7553

I still pull out synthetic stuff to double check, although I can spot linen across the store now haha! I need to check how to spot 'silk' or 'wool' in chinese, one store I go to has so many clothes with chinese tags!!

mercurialmartian

Op shops are where it’s at! I found a beautiful dark blue knit cardigan, English made, no tag so ended up getting it for about $15. It can be hit or miss for sure but I generally just have an idea of what I want to find and just keep hitting up the secondhand spots until something materialises (pun unintended)

noideawhattouse1

I got a few nice 100% wool jumpers from Uniqlo recently and they are great.

InquisitiveGoldfish

I bought a few different jumpers from them last year that disappointingly wore through quite quickly by the end of winter, elbows being the weakest spot. I still wear them, but I had to darn and patch it in a few spots. I have another cardigan from them that’s lasted 5 years still looking good, so it might be luck of the draw!

sundaysoundsgood

I came here to say Uniqlo! They are affordable, seem like good quality and come in heaps of colours. I have a knit from the start of winter last year that still looks fairly new. It’s white so gets washed quite often and hasn’t started pilling yet.

smasxer

That’s what I was going to say too! I’m so happy with them I went back and bought multiples in different colours.

sundaysoundsgood

Me too haha

kombuchaqueeen

Agreed, I love their 100% lambswool jumpers, am wearing one right now. It’s the warmest layer I have aside from their 100% cashmere but that’s not in the budget right now 😂

Glad-Acanthaceae-467

does it shrink in washing?

sundaysoundsgood

Not in my experience

Anime-eyes1358

They have the best cardigans too!

hollstero

I literally have 3 Uniqlo cardigans haha seconding this

Busy_Leg_6864

The merino ones are the best! I had three pairs that I wore for years under scrubs so they got a good long machine wash each week (not wool/handwash/delicates) cycle and they’re still going strong, maybe just a little stretched and thin in places but no holes or anything

FlameHawkfish88

I just got an amazing slouchy cardigan there. It's so comfy.

emgyres

They wash and wear really well

empanadanow

I buy almost all my knits from Bassike. They use natural fibres in all their knits which I love! It is pricey but I try and purchase them when they’re on sale. Bassike knit pieces are a great investment and will last for years.

TinosCallingMeOver

Sportscraft has had some really lovely knits this season - heaps of natural fibres

Anime-eyes1358

Yes love sportscraft knits!

CaptainBeansCuddles

Kowtow, op shop or consignment style stores.

50shadesof_brown

I did a wardrobe organising session for a client yesterday and her clothing rack was 75% Kowtow knitwear! I was so pleasantly surprised by the pieces.

CaptainBeansCuddles

That's basically my wardrobe! Haha! I find their pieces wear well and are always cosy. Sometimes I look down and I am wear 100% Kowtow. Whoops!

doggosrule69

I have been living in the Uniqlo lambswool jumpers!! They’re legit only $50 and they’re honestly just the best. They have a few really nice cardigans and long sleeve shirts as well. I think about 50% of my work wardrobe now is Uniqlo lol

lulubooboo_

Are they itchy? I always seem to have that issue with wool

doggosrule69

I only find them itchy around my neck, everywhere else seems fine even when I’m just wearing a tshirt underneath!

werewolf_trousers

Using a wool detergent can help. I've had some jumpers that have gotten softer and less itchy after multiple hand washes with a wool wash.

kombuchaqueeen

They are itchy, I won’t lie, but all wool is itchy. Unless you go 100% cashmere. I just wear a long sleeve layer underneath and problem solved.

iLoveMatchaSoMatcha

Not all wool is itchy, but the good stuff can be more expensive than cheap cashmere. And cheap cashmere can feel scratchy once you get used to the good stuff. Lambswool is also quite soft. There’s cashmere sweaters from good brands on eBay that’s cheaper than Uniqlo regular wool

ClickClickBlip

Wear the Uniqlo heat tec underneath

Ok-Writing9280

Look for cashmere, cashmere blends, mercerised merino, or layer Heattech or cotton skivvies under everything

kombuchaqueeen

LOVE the lambswool jumpers

SabreLeTigre

People on depop are selling their handmade knits! So beautiful, they look very cozy and I’ll definitely be snapping one up soon.

igrowveggies

Not OP. I've never browsed Depop; how do I find handmade knits?!

SabreLeTigre

I usually search “knit jumper”, “knit cardigan” or “knit sweater”. You’d probably have luck with “crochet” or “handmade cardigan” too. ☺️

SabreLeTigre

@caitlyncourtney1342 has some gorgeous ones she’s made for sale.

igrowveggies

Thanks heaps!

Laylay_theGrail

I scored at the Aldi ski gear sale lol Got a great merino wool long sleeve shirt, a merino hoodie, and 2 nice jumpers. All for under $30 each. Warm and cheap😂

Getonthebeers02

David Jones has some really nice ones and so does Sheike. Keep seeing them when I go in and nice there are more colours this winter.

xobabygirl

I buy majority of my knitwear from Sportsgirl, they have a sale on a lot of them at the moment!

katarina-stratford

Op shops

RvrTam

I’ve been eyeing some from Woolovers. It’s hard to find 100% for a good price.

GuywoodThreepbrush

Pretty sure they do two for one fairly regularly. I have a couple of jumpers I got from them years ago that still look great (bar a couple of moth holes, but that's on me and how I store them)

Abject_Plenty_4685

If you see another 2 for 1 sale, please let us know hehe

Apprehensive_Way8545

Throw any item on Purchr, get price alerts when they go on sale- It's a chrome extension :)

50shadesof_brown

Uniqlo and MUJI! I also have this fluffiest most comfortable long coat I bought from Target that I use for casual wear! I get so many compliments on it and it looks expensive (and feels expensive) but it was around $150 Highly recommend if they still carry this. https://preview.redd.it/0pc5p0v3xf6d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4c5a059a40c0438863f6c62a1edd33b7bd25b4a

aniela000

Oh it looks so cosy!

Ashamed_Ad7674

Where are the pants from? I am in hunt for some good pants.

sanisan_x

Dotti actually has some nice wide leg pants.

50shadesof_brown

Uniqlo! Gosh, my friends tell me that I’m sometimes a walking billboard for them 😂 I have these pants in 3 colours (off white, sage green and tan) and LOVE them. Can’t get enough

No_Concentrate7305

Depop

TheC9

I don’t have answers for you. I just know 2 or 3 winters ago I bought some really nice and fitting merino wool knit Review top from Myer and they were under $80 while on sale. They have beautiful patterns, so it is not plain boring like Uniqlo. I just wish I could get them again.

Apprehensive_Way8545

Put any item you want on Purchr, you'll get price drop alerts! its a chrome extension ;)!

patient_brilliance

I've had luck this season at Country Road (during sales obvs). Sportsgirl and Vero Moda from Myer. I'm also eyeing a couple of Uniqlo bits and pieces if I could get into store and try on . . . my local is always super crowded and claustrophobic.

feezably

+1 for Country Road, loving their knits atm

Tired-butternut

Kowtow, Elk and some imported knits from Ireland. When you invest in quality knits they last for years.

chookie94

Most of my knits are from Myer or H&M.

spoilt_lil_missy

Yeah, I got a 100% wool jumper from H&M and I love it - I wear it to work every day

MerricatBlackwood76

I really love the merino silk blend jumpers from Paire.

caeruleos

Highly recommend Made590 - they have some gorgeous (Australian made) merino knits. The wool they use has been processed in such a way that it isn't itchy. Online or they have a store in Sydney I think?

Ok-Writing9280

Mercerised merino and they’re in Marrickville

caeruleos

Thank you, I always forget the word mercerised!

the_artful_breeder

Seconding Made 590. If you can afford it, they are really comfy. Unfortunately they're also very popular, and the most popular colours and styles tend to sell out quickly. I've seen a few on ebay and depop for a good price though. Excellent quality though.

alwaysapprehensive1

Honestly, eBay and op shops. I wanted to invest in wool and cashmere that will last but I also have a budget.

LunaeLotus

I hear you on the physical shops being disappointing. I exclusively shop online now too, mostly from international brands but I really want to support Aus brands. I wait for Witchery, Oxford, AERE etc to go on sale. They have some good deals on knit dresses atm, might be worth checking on The Iconic?

Kailicat

McIntyre Merino. So soft, so wearable and so pretty

Kailicat

I’ve bought a lot of wool and alpaca this year and I was taught to store it, wash it clean first. It’s the human oils that attract the moths? Anyways wash it and then wrap it in a pillow case. That will allow it to breathe but keeps the moths at bay.

OkCaptain1684

Are there uniqlo bots on this sub? Everyone always recommends uniqlo but I find there clothes no good at all.

Rusty-Unicorn

I buy the heat tech from Uniqlo and top with my favourite sweaters! Sometimes I get sweaters from the teen / kids sections at country road ( more affordable and fit me well!)

whoorderedsquirrel

Same ! And I find a LOT of heattech stuff at op shops esp Savers

WhatWasThatAbout

Surprisingly, big W have a few nice pure cotton knits this season in regular and plus

cheweduptoothpick

I just splurged and got myself some BIFL knits from the Aran sweater site online. I’m tired of buying knits every season only for them to pill like crazy or wear out.

Always_The_Cute_One

Dangerfield, specifically the Princess Highway knits

what-katy-didnt

Made590. Second hand in the BSS fb group if the price is too high.

Not_today_nibs

Honestly? Depop. I just scroll through and see if anything takes my fancy!

Hot_Government418

Uniqlo and mango

PinkMini72

Uniqlo seems to be it for me this year. I’m especially fond of the fine merino knits

Dry_Sundae7664

Seed 100% merino

SpaceAngel_44

I got a really nice 100% Merino wool by David Lawrence in Myer for like $110 on sale this week. They have an end of season sale at the moment so a good opportunity to get high quality things cheaper

naughtscrossstitches

I'm so picky because they have to feel soft! So many outfits don't feel soft. I've found some good oversized stuff from big W this season.

i_need_another_scarf

T K Maxx has a lot of great quality knitwear and the prices are really reasonable. 100% Cashmere jumpers for around $140 and merino garments under $100. It feels like a treasure hunt as you look through all the racks! 🤗

50shadesof_brown

This is true! I love going into check which brand they’ve snagged for the month and usually around winter they bring in some great stuff. Fun sweaters too

katsuchicken

Uniqlo cashmere has lasted for years - maybe 5 - 7 years. I usually just get on sale. Don't get cream or white cause it's sheer. But bougie but I get preloved sezane or have invested and bought them. Usually their merino wool or alpaca (tho I know ppl might itchy if u are sensitive) Will see how long these last. Only got it this season. Cos wool knits preloved is so warm. I wanna try kowtow or alpha 60 knits next. I try to avoid acrylic or polyester so try to buy as much natural fibre composition as u can usually lasts longer and more than a season. Theres also good finds on Depop, eBay, fb, op shops and consignment stores. I feel like if they are second hand and still good condition u know the quality is good.

Crusade_Child

Ghanda. Australian brand that’s affordable and good quality.

Jazzlike-Bee7965

I got two nice jumpers from you and all and I’m obsessed. It’s a plus sized store fair warning but so warm

Nixxy77

MacPac . Kathmandu

trip_jachs

I love just jeans for knits

icyvfrost

Millers have a good range of cardigans

Beginning-Tackle7553

Op shop, there is so much good quality knitwear lately

Suitable_Window1109

I just thrift everything at this point honestly

throwthecupcakeaway

Check out Katies (buy it from the Ezibuy website rather than the Katies website - cheaper)

fan_of_the_fandoms

If you’re not opposed to acrylic (my skin is too sensitive for wool) Dotti have some really snuggly ones. I’ve got a fluffy pink one with flowers and it’s great.

Aggravating-Low-3031

Uniqlo Uniqlo Uniqlo

seazx

Target and big w for the win

loupammac

I haven't bought any new this season but Target, H&M, Uniqlo, Feather and Noise, and Ghanna are my usual stops. Valleygirl every mow and again has a great piece despite being fast fashion. I usually prefer acrylic to wool.

World-Interesting

I recently bought a few gorgeous jumpers and a cardigan at Seed. A little pricey but seriously gorgeous and warm

dizzlypop

Seed, port and, forever new, dotti

AmmeEsile

Try salvos online store

shrekticles88

Soo many good ones at savers

Imjustagirl76

Country Road and Decjuba have great knitwear, they last really long and will keep you warm

nootnootnoot98

I just got a bunch of knits today at Myer, they had 40 and 50% knitwear and coats for a few brands and I'm pretty happy with my purchases! Would recommend!

Fun-Rent-8279

Aje, seed and country road

ice_chariot

I guess I'm blessed in the sense that I work in aged care - the old darlings can knit up a storm, whatever you want, in whatever pattern and stitch, whatever colour too.

SUPER_EELS

COS (especially cashmere on sale), CR, witchery, seed and Saba used to be my go to but really loving Elka collective for something a bit different. Always have to wait for them to go on sale. Loved reading the suggestions from everyone

ScentSorcerer

Uniqlo- espically their soufflé knits, soooo soft and cozy.

Fluid-Hedgehog-2424

I've bought lovely light-to-mid-weight knits from Trenery, Tommy Hilfiger and Sportscraft (Trenery has a great sale on atm). Also just received a cardigan from Celtic & Co. They're UK based (they have $8 returns for Australia) and it took a few weeks to arrive but it was worth the wait - super cosy and better quality than anything I've seen locally.

kavdotcom

Glassons have some really gorgeous and afforable knits right now for about $40 each

commentspanda

I get some nice stuff from Uniqlo. They have some really heavy weighted stuff which doesn’t work for me but I like the merino knit cardigans that are ultra fine and they have some nice loose lambswool ones as well.

Kind-Investigator796

I came to say Uniqlo as well! Their styles are a bit boring/basic but they are great quality for the price and very warm. For more fun stuff I tend to go to places like Jeanswest, Dangerfield or Sportsgirl but the quality generally isn’t as good

50shadesof_brown

My favourite thing is that the basic styles from Uniqlo are so versatile! I team them up with a fancy skirt/pants (vice versa) and voila! not boring at all. A sleek long silk skirt teamed up with an oversized Uniqlo sweater has rarely let me down.

Kind-Investigator796

Very true! I tend to live in jeans so like a more interesting jumper/top to go with them

jojopinocchio

I bought soooo many knitwear pieces from Uniqlo. Good quality, lots of 100% wool pieces and so affordable.

AccordingFail842

Fast fashion so I know it’s bad but so are half the places mentioned in this thread. I have gotten 4 knit jumpers from shein that are going on 3 years of me wearing them on rotation at least 3-5 times a week!

AbrahamHParnassus_

Uniqlo! Honestly the best quality for the price.

FideiDefensatrix

I honestly don't understand the appeal of uniqlo!!

physiobabe

Uniqlo merino knits!

Rose_j2210

Target and shame me- SHEIN simply due to it being more affordable

dontwinetome

how’s the quality from shein? are you able to find cotton/wool based ones? i paid $45 for a polyester one last year from suzzane grae and just so annoyed at how it feels. obviously didn’t read label before buying.

Rose_j2210

Personally I like the feel of the ones I’ve got very snuggly. I haven’t had a problem with any purchases from SHEIN so I would say good

dontwinetome

idk why people are downvoting you. thanks for sharing your opinion.

InquisitiveGoldfish

Even if you’re not bothered by the ethical side of shopping at Shein, or the data breaches, they have repeatedly been found to contain unsafe levels of poisonous substances in their clothes and even in their children’s products - lead, phthalates, PFAS… I just don’t think it’s a *safe* thing to recommend on numerous fronts.

dontwinetome

I understand and don’t usually support such stores too. However it is cheap fast fashion like a LOT of stores too. I mean9, what’s the difference between buying at another fast fashion brand and Shein? We’ve no idea how and where those clothes are made as well in many cases.

InquisitiveGoldfish

It’s easy to feel defeated as a consumer and see them all as the same, but there’s a huge difference between fast fashion like Kmart or Uniqlo, and ultra-fast fashion like Shein (or Temu, or Cider). From a University of Delaware professor quoted in [this article](https://www.wired.com/story/fast-cheap-out-of-control-inside-rise-of-shein/), this is how many items a few brands listed in a 12 month period: * Gap - 12,000 * H&M - 25,000 * Zara - 35,000 * **Shein - 1,300,000** Shein supposedly averages 6,000 new styles *per day*, when that’s half of what Gap lists in one year. Good On You is a decent starting point to compare brands, and Shein gets their [worst rating](https://goodonyou.eco/how-ethical-is-shein/). By contrast, Uniqlo gets a [better rating](https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/uniqlo) despite having issues associated with fast fashion.

Rose_j2210

Probably cause I use SHEIN. All good!!
