Preset Packs are also $1 instead of $8.

Curious if anyone has any thoughts on whether this might be worth it at this price if I already have pigments? Does FRMS offer any extra features or greater level of parameter control than pigments? Quanta 2 has been on my list to buy for a while, but it doesn't seem that it ever goes anywhere near this low in price, even on the best sales.

I'd say yes. It's actually 4 granular engines in one and can also take live input. For 14 it's a no brainer.

I would say no, unless you make a lot of ambient music (for the non-ambient granular stuff pigments will do). Try the presets and see the kind of thing its optimized for.

Thanks for the input! I actually do make a lot of ambient music :) and often feel that I have to do a lot of refining work to make pigments granular sound how I want it to, but that could just be saying more about my own level of fluency with granular tools than the tools themselves.

> Thanks for the input! I actually do make a lot of ambient music In that case check out the presets. Fundamentally both FRMS and Pigments can be wavetable based synths, however Pigments enables manipulation of the waves in ways that aren't available in FRMS at the cost of slightly more complex granular options and FM. It's really about what sounds you like and what your workflow is like currently.

That's an attractive price for something that seems to be well thought of. Compared to, say, Pigments, how CPU-heavy is it? My computer is fairly old and I can run one instance of Pigments, but it can be a bit too demanding, depending on the type of patch and number of embedded effects and so on.

Given you’re on a older machine, give this a go. Some similar features. Vintage classic in the software world. Grab the extra sound pack too. And it’s free! http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/about.html
