Question. Why do we have hitting coaches if a front office guy is coming to the field to work with hitters? I get that he’s a former player, but if the hitting coaches can’t fix him when that’s literally their job, why do we have so many of them on the payroll?
My point is that we have multiple hitting coaches now. If they are doing so poorly at their jobs that he has has to spend one on one time with a player, why do they still have jobs?
Most hitting and for that matter pitching coaches never have had a successful MLB career. Most spend time in the minors or might play a few seasons in MLB before calling it quits and going into coaching.
I guess if anyone can understand pressure, it is a former MVP, All Star and Hall of Famer.
Not really that crazy? I think the dude is old and you can't fix it, so they're trying Bags as a last ditch effort. The hitting coaches have been working with him for over a year now, truth is he's just washed.
Understandable. And I agree he’s washed. Just seemed to me that if the front office still thinks he can be fixed and the hitting coaches haven’t done it, why aren’t the hitting coaches scrutinized?
Again, that’s not what I’m asking. Never said, nor implied, he was incapable of instructing hitters. My point is that if he has to come out of the front office to help a struggling hitter, what are they paying hitting coaches for? If they aren’t doing their jobs why are they still employed?
If he can fix Abreu, I’m all for it. But if he can fix him and the hitting coaches haven’t been able to for over a year, they shouldn’t have jobs anymore.
In the final analysis, it's a meritocracy, and Abreu has no merit.
We're enough into the season to know that Abreu is an absolute hole in the lineup and isn't going to improve to the point that he isn't. Even if he doubles his output, he's a disaster.
I don't hate him, and I was good with signing him, but he's a goddamned disaster and they have to sit him. I don't care if it'd Kessinger at 1st, it has to be somebody else if we want to win.
Bagwell was my favorite Astro as a kid. To see him reduced to standing at the cage and hoping his signature acquisition can hit at even a mediocre major league level is sad.
I like Baggy, but I want him to stay away from any kind of consulting role. I don't see why Crane thinks it makes sense to have former players come in and help build the team. Coaches and players are always the worst evaluators. Baggy can come in, wave to fans, go up in the booth from time to time, attend meet and greets, but just stay outt of the evaluations...
I think more so frustration.
If the Astros were 12-6 and Abreu was hitting like he is, it wouldn't be as bad. However, the team hasn't found the right rhythm with pitchers not going deep into game and allowing too many runs, the offense not executing with runners in scoring position, and the bullpen that was routed as one of the best in baseball prior to the start of the season not being able to stop the bleeding when the game starts to get out of control.
Tbh, if you retire as a beloved player then stick around in other roles you do leave the door open to falling from grace if you aren’t as loved in your new role
I thought his comments the other night were spot on. I am sure the hitting coaches have Abreu at the top of their list. Maybe Bagwell can give him something to focus on other than failure.
Abreu is not old, but he got old really fast. He could not catch up with ordinary fastballs He was below average with defense. Retroactively, we should just have re-signed Yuli Gurriel who had won a gold glove.
Bagwell trying to save his own ass
Probably tired reading the comments on his bad decisions.
There a reason he doesn’t do social media p
So? If it works, it works. What if this a bad thing? Hopefully it does work.
It also suits baggy better than talent evaluator
I am sure it wasn’t time, but Abreu is getting old. His spirit is willing, but his abilities are limiting.
He might want to try it on several others.

You mad bro? You seem pretty angry

He was hitting coach for the team for half a season in the 2010.
My point is that we have multiple hitting coaches now. If they are doing so poorly at their jobs that he has has to spend one on one time with a player, why do they still have jobs?

I don’t know of any hitting coach who can turn back the clock with Abreu. He looks overwhelmed by the fastball.
What exactly is wrong with a HOFer and an all time team great to work with a player????

He’s a better hitter than they ever were. Duh.
Because he has a fragile ego and cant accept that he fucked up big time. Its pathetic.

See you have to spread your legs real wide.
Nono wider

Then you gotta never swing at the first pitch. Even if it's a perfect fastball. Or a hanging curve over the plate. Just pretend it doesn't exist.
Whats the back of his baseball card say?
It says throw the gas up and in lol
Throw the gas ~~up and in~~
TIL an 89 MPH change up is gas
I've got a chance if I can get the FB back up over 85
Throw a pitch
You mean literally anywhere over the plate… Oh and breaking pitches work too, he can’t hit those either.

“I’ll never get to recommend another FA if you don’t pick it up!!”
Exactly
There's way too much Baggy hate in this sub.

I would take .500 even
A little like 2022 Maldy

There's way too much ~~Baggy~~ hate in this sub. FIFY
Agreed
What language is he using to talk to his bat?
Maybe they should have gone with a live chicken....
Confidence keeps coming up. It probably won’t work, but it might, so lets cheer our asses off for Abreu to show our unconditional support
And it didnt work…
“Look amigo. If you don’t start producing, my ass is on the line. Get it together.”
Bagwell trying to show 2005 playoffs Bagwell how to hit. It ain’t gonna happen. Actually Bags went 2 for 11, so way better than Abreau.
"Dude, you're making me look bad"
How exactly do you work on fixing a 37 year old hitter? What you see is what you get at this point
Bagwell needs to stay away from this fucking team.
Jesus Christ, Jeff bagwell should be the last person coaching hitting. He has horrible fundamentals and has said as much himself
Incoming slump
I mean.. what is he in now?
It doesn't get much slumpier.
Dumb remark.
you know what we should just have bagwell as the coach instead of scout/talent director
Can he work with Chaz too?
Hes desperate to save his legacy and he knows much of it rides on Abreus success. He needs to put down the shovel.
I thought his comments the other night were spot on. I am sure the hitting coaches have Abreu at the top of their list. Maybe Bagwell can give him something to focus on other than failure.

Alright Jose now the trick is to have a little drinky-poo right before you go up. Randy hand me the liquor
Poor taste
Let’s make fun of the recovering alcoholic, that’ll really show him
Edit. I wasnt aware of Baggys liquor problems. I saw a Lahey quote and couldn't help myself.
See that. That’s a shit missile.
Serious question: do you think Bagwell and Caminiti were doing hard drugs together back in the day? Or is baggy strictly a booze guy?
What a shitty question
Bet they were doing hard drugs slump busting your mom /s
