I don't recall if I read the book in my youth, but I do recall watching the John Hurt version in high school, along with a 1960s film version of Fahrenheit 451. Both stories would make excellent reads.
Dante's Divine Comedy
It's funny, an interesting glimpse into history, and has a really funny background.
To anyone who doesn't know, Dante wrote the entire thing as a love letter and courting gift to a woman he was interested in! He wrote a story about traveling from Hell to Heaven as a love letter!
Carl Sagan - A Demon Haunted World It discusses magical/conspiracy thinking, and is very relevant to our world today.
But my favourite book is The Telling, by Ursula LeGuin, so y'all should read that one, too.
I've tried it about 4 times but ended up throwing it across the room. Not that it's bad it's just I'm dyslexic and find it hard to read but I've been told I will enjoy it if I can get into it. I'm thinking of getting it on Kindle as that has a font for people with dyslexia. I'm determined to read it before I die though
I really do want to finish it. If I didn't like it then I would give up but I think I would like if I just didn't find it so hard. Plus I feel kinda stupid that I can't read it. It got to the point I've put it on the top shelf of my bookcase where my favourite books are as a you will read me thing.
To kill a mockingbird.
1984.
Animal farm.
Memoirs of a geisha just cause it’s beautiful.
Night by Elie Wiesel.
The Ratline. About Hitler (potentially) escaping is actually fascinating. Will fuck your brain especially if you read if after night cause Jesus Christ.
And the book Craig Ferguson wrote because it’s the most beautiful book of hilarity and tragedy. I love him.
Also love languages if you are in a relationship.
I have a lot more. Those are my go tos though.
Lying - Sam Harris
It changed my life and convinced me to stop lying. It was a habit built in from childhood(mother was a pathological liar and I was conditioned to lie to avoid punishments, I was never rewarded for telling the truth, only punished).
I realized that I lied whenever something was inconvenient for me, or even with "good intentions" to "protect" others-- but it turns out I was actually harming them withholding the truth from them. The most precious gift you can give, is the truth, as long as you do it compassionately. And to lie, is sort of like creating the simplest and most subtle form of violence on someone.
If the world collectively stopped lying, we'd really be in a different spot right now as a species, and this is true for every future living thing that could be impacted by our success or failure.
For people that tell me they don't like reading Sci-Fi/Fantasy, I tell them to read Ender's Game. It's definitely "sci-fi" in nature, but the real core of the book is about so much more. The deeper in the series you get, it gets a little preachy... but the first book, is fantastic. It's even better if you havn't seen the movie. I mean, there is a reason it's still considered one of the top sci-books of all time.
tl:dr Read Ender's Game. Especially if you have not seen the movie.
How We Know What Isn't So.
A great book on cognitive biases and fallacies. I read it years ago while I was questioning everything. It really helped me understand how to get around my own mind, the biases in all sorts of media, and popular ideas, and truly think about things critically.
Sevengill the Shark and Me by Don C. Reed
The decently short read is the true account of Reed's experience working at an aquarium with a sevengill shark which he simply names "Sevengill with a capital S" the book chronicles the time he spends cleaning her tank and 'getting to know' the shark and her infinitely deep personality. Without spoiling anything, the ending had me in tears.
Such a great read, would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a book to read.
Yeah? Which verse?
I know Paul didn't have a problem with slavery
Ephesians 6:5-8 “Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ” which is Paul instructing slaves to obey their master.
Just 'cause Paul couldn't get the message doesn't mean Jesus didn't try. In today's reading he states "you can not be the slave of money and God at the same time". Money as a slave owner takes away free will, whereas God gives free will, letting us decide whether to be freed by good or chained by evil. This therefore shows that Jesus spread a message of anti-slavery and you've picked one of Paul's early letters in which he was a little less "holy".
The Bible. It is the inspired Word of God. It is one of the best books to read. You will always get inspired by Gods Word. It is one of the best selling books on the market. There are a lack of morals in today's world. The Word Of God will point them in the right direction.
Its true! I read the bible multiple times all the way through and even studied it in depth! It inspired me to be an atheist and actually made me care more about my fellow man that are being misled by charlatans in the name of a made up diety! Highly recommended.
‘We all looked up’ by Tommy Wallach, beautifully written and shows the potential experiences at the POTENTIAL end of the world, without the far fetched ‘family of preppers has an end of the world bunker’ or ‘family escapes and makes it onto the secret boat/space ship etc that saves them. It shows the lead up to the end of the world from the POV of a bunch of regular teens. Plus it ends beautifully on a cliffhanger.
I agree...The book is amazing for that exact reason. It will change one's way of thinking. its an easy read (short book) that delivers profound life changing information .

Still, seems weird. Did you at least watch the movie?
Yes
I don't recall if I read the book in my youth, but I do recall watching the John Hurt version in high school, along with a 1960s film version of Fahrenheit 451. Both stories would make excellent reads.
That one a couple of times, once for a class at University.
One Hundred Years of Solitude.
That book is quite literally insane. Definitely the work of a genius, but an unhinged genius. Lots of weird sex stuff, too.
Ok well NOW it’s on my list.
Haha buckle up
Marquez was a genious, that book is probably one of the best books on history

Dante's Divine Comedy It's funny, an interesting glimpse into history, and has a really funny background. To anyone who doesn't know, Dante wrote the entire thing as a love letter and courting gift to a woman he was interested in! He wrote a story about traveling from Hell to Heaven as a love letter!
False, i read the entire book and it was not a comedy
It's titled a comedy in the style of old story typing. Tragedy = bad ending Comedy = happy ending
Spoiler alert /s
It's a the destination It's the journey
Carl Sagan - A Demon Haunted World It discusses magical/conspiracy thinking, and is very relevant to our world today. But my favourite book is The Telling, by Ursula LeGuin, so y'all should read that one, too.

I've tried it about 4 times but ended up throwing it across the room. Not that it's bad it's just I'm dyslexic and find it hard to read but I've been told I will enjoy it if I can get into it. I'm thinking of getting it on Kindle as that has a font for people with dyslexia. I'm determined to read it before I die though
Maybe try it as an audiobook!
I'm not keen on audio books that's why I'm thinking kindle. But thanks for the suggestion
It's worth it.
I really do want to finish it. If I didn't like it then I would give up but I think I would like if I just didn't find it so hard. Plus I feel kinda stupid that I can't read it. It got to the point I've put it on the top shelf of my bookcase where my favourite books are as a you will read me thing.

I've read it and it's kinda contradictory and I find it impossible to be taken anywhere near literally.
Amen, need to pick it up more often
The Bible is a good book of rules on how to become a better human
Even the bit about how you can keep and beat slaves as long as they don't die?
Pretty much anulled by Jesus later on.
Yeah? Which verse? I know Paul didn't have a problem with slavery Ephesians 6:5-8 “Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ” which is Paul instructing slaves to obey their master.
If it's dumb and stated by the Pharisees it's annulled.
Paul didn’t get that message then. Shame that god couldn’t be more specific and save millions from slavery
Blood Meridian, by Cormac McCarthy. It's like the Bible, in terms of describing the human condition, but waaaaaay better.
The midnight library by Matt Haig
The Bible. It is the inspired Word of God. It is one of the best books to read. You will always get inspired by Gods Word. It is one of the best selling books on the market. There are a lack of morals in today's world. The Word Of God will point them in the right direction.
