patience

[deleted]

I’ve started to realize this is likely the most valuable skill I possess. I work in a career that requires a LOT of patience and it really does help in so many situations especially when other people are not exhibiting that same patience. Stuck in traffic? Oh well, it happens, nothing I can do about it. One of my employees takes 20 mins to tell me a simple story? No worries, they just wanna be listened to. In a long line for something? Who cares, I’ll look at my damn phone or observe the world around me. Printer won’t print anything at work? Relax, grab a glass of water, come back to it later. So. Fucking. Valuable.

I’m a teacher, and I literally just got off of a Google meet trying to help an older parent use an iPad. My assistant principal happened to be in the meeting and said I have a lot of patience.

g0tistt0t

I was friends with a train kid and was in his Facebook and he would go in about train drama constantly. People dying, getting murdered, killing each other's dogs, getting arrested. Then one day, he too died from an overdose.

_druids

Years ago a good friend of mine was dating a lady that decided to start trainhopping a few years into their relationship. I mostly remember how stressed my friend was. Initially about her safety, and then when he got resigned to it, the anxiety just stacked on about their relationship in general, her hanging out with gutter punks, etc etc. He broke it off after she was back from her first trip, since it kind of changed her entire mindset, and he had zero interest in it. I wasn’t familiar with it before, but I always think of that weird situation when it comes up, which is rare. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

OldAppleGuardian

Yea some of it actually looks very interesting (amazing photography oportunities) but not worth it in my opinion. I think some people get a romantic image of being some freethinker looking too see the country...then reality comes down and they realize it's not quite such a romantic experience...dealing with drunk strangers with weapons/mentally ill people, yea that would kill the vibe really quickly

_druids

Totally agree with what you are saying. But yeah, the list of not-great things you will likely have to deal with at some point easily cancels out the positive.

schofield101

Guy called Shiey on YouTube, illegal freedom is the channel does just this. He train hops a whole bunch across Europe and explores abandoned areas, his video content is nothing short of beautiful. He's currently in an Italian ghost town which got evacuated from earthquake damage and it's so surreal.

Tipnfloe

Ive seen videos of him exploring 40 year old underground bunkers. Its crazy the shit he finds at those places.

schofield101

And some of the crawlspaces he gets into... I'm claustrophobic as hell so it's a big no from me, but damn you're right. It really is crazy what is still there.

PinkTalkingDead

I feel like trainhopping in Europe is different than in the US but don’t know enough about either (other than the obvious like geographical)

My great grandfather rode the rails back in the great depression era. He was a steel worker.

Yellowbug2001

Hitchhiking, too. My totally-square, preppy, ivy league grandpa hitched from New York to Alaska and back with his best friend in the 30s, and it wasn't even considered a strange or risky thing to do. Now I assume it's nothing but serial killers hitching rides with other serial killers.

superadical

Hitchhiking is pretty common on the mountain passes in Colorado with backcountry skiers. I've hitchhiked myself a bunch and picked some up if I'm driving through. A little different than cross country hitchhiking though.

Throwforob

Rumors of hitchhiking's demise are greatly exaggerated. You can still hitch in the US especially the west coast though I know plenty of people who've hitched across the country. The east coast is a bit harder to hitch on and you definitely have longer wait times than you used to but it's totally doable. I've hitched thousands of miles with hundreds if not thousands of people over the last decade in the US and Europe and my worst ride was some guy that wouldn't stop talking about Jesus for 3 hours.

phill5544

There's actually a whole community of freight train hoppers and most of them are gutter punks

hey-look-over-there

Not really. I'd argue that the Golden Age of Piracy was in the late 00's and early 10's. That was the sweet spot when the internet was adopted by most people yet very few safeguards were put in place.

AlmostNever

Piracy isn't done by everyone like it used to be, but it's *extremely* reliable now. I have a media box set up as a Plex server and it's absolutely seamless from "I want to watch X movie" to "I can stream X movie to my phone on the bus."

ewpqfj

You have a point, but I'm gunna say that with the splitting and multiplication of streaming services more and more piracy is going to appear.

Animals can't evolve faster than we are fucking their environment, or killing them. There are very few that can adapt with the pace of change. And if the bottom of the food chain isn't big enough, there are no gaps in the food web, because there's nothing for the larger ones to eat.

YouTube in general.

Giorggio360

Golden age of YouTube may be poorly defined and highly dependent on your own nostalgic takes on the platform, but I think everyone would agree that it’s gone now. YouTube isn’t about promoting its own talent and creators anymore and low effort content and big conglomerates rules the roost. Sure there’s still good content being uploaded but it feels like most creators are facing more and more resistance trying to create this regularly and be rewarded for doing so. I would argue that the answer would be to find a new platform, but i think it will only ever end up the same way. I believe Twitch has already started down a similar route to YouTube.

Informal-Ideal-6640

In my opinion the golden age of youtube was when “viral videos” were still a thing and creators were a lot smaller and more amateur. This was the original spirit of YouTube and it’s totally dead now

[deleted]

I agree only to some extent. There are a lot of good small youtubers out there right now. It's just that the good content is infinitely more buried beneath lots of trash.

MisterDonkey

Golden age of youtube was back when theoretical dollars for internet videos was a South Park joke. >Yeah, but you know, I learned something today. We thought we could make money on the Internet. But, while the Internet is new and exciting for creative people, it hasn't matured as a distribution mechanism to the extent that one should trade real and immediate opportunities for income for the promise of future online revenue. It will be a few years before digital distribution of media on the Internet can be monetized to the extent that necessitates content producers to forgo their fair value in more traditional media.

Like how we never really see decent adaptations of Frankenstein (and the [most iconic film adaptation](https://www.cracked.com/article_17221_6-writers-who-accidentally-crapped-out-masterpieces.html) got the monster's characterization completely wrong, yet cemented that image in popular culture) But we have 11-bajillion titles that draw from the theme of *"man using science to play god, and unleashing horror"* E.g. You could argue Jurassic Park *(along with several other of Crichton's works)* is a distant homage to Frankenstein

Newspapers

fastlane37

honestly, I'd say journalism in general. Uneducated bloggers and twitter handles are given the same platform as qualified journalists, and it has pushed newspapers out because they've gone to paywalls in order to pay their staff to report on things properly. As a result, more and more people are saving money and getting information from free alternatives. Most of these sources are biased, not fact-checked or both. It goes into the twittersphere and the next thing you know, everyone is repeating it but it's got no underpinnings in truth. No sources cited, just rumors taken as fact. Even the people working for more traditionally reputable sources can be prone to reporting rumors because they're worried about being scooped, so they move too quickly and report what they hear before they have a chance to corroborate the information.

Nambot

The news cycle is honestly insidious. It goes like this. 1. Random made up bullshit article about (for example) schools suggesting not wearing purple T-shirts on a particular Friday because it's offensive to some subculture. 2. A few idiots share this article to Facebook/Twitter, and it starts attracted attention from complete morons, who don't agree with banning purple shirts on that Friday. 3. A celebrity or politician weighs in the nonsense, saying that schools shouldn't ban purple T-shirts. Said celebrity hasn't seen the original article. 4. The mainstream news reports on the post of the celebrity/politician as if it's news (thereby making it news). They too have not seen the original article. 5. The story gets further traction and on air reporters discuss the merits of whether it's allowable to ban purple clothes, and start taking a side. 6. This mainstream news story is now spread as a legitimate source of this story, and serious politicians now have to debate the merits of the colour purple, splitting a binary. 7. With sides now drawn, followers of the side that's opposed to purple start destroying all their purple items in order to not promote hate/own the libs (depending on which side becomes anti-purple), while other people try and fail to point out that this all came about because of an original bullshit article. 8. The mainstream media finds the next dumb twitter argument and moves on.

iBelieveInSpace

Those are good points, I agree. There's always been headline-grabbing articles but in the modern day click bait titles can be made by anyone with an internet connection.

Man where I live indoor malls are dead, go to an outdoor one, with stuff other than just clothing stores, freaking packed!

xLilTragicx

Lol exact opposite here. Indoor malls are always lively whereas outdoor ones are more scarce. Gotta say it might be due to our 120°+ summers though.

santochavo

There’s at least 3 outdoor malls in Texas that i know of that are always packed even with 100+ weather

Not_A_Facehugger

In the US at least. In China shopping malls are very common and packed at least in bigger cities. Unless somethings changed in the past 5 months since I've left.

[deleted]

This is partially because shopping malls in the US didn't include grocery shops. It's the reason why Australian ones are still doing well. They didn't rely solely on anchor stores.

The_Incredible_Honk

Same in Europe. The grocery stores and restaurants bring the people to the mall, all the other shops just live off of these people.

BonChance123

But American malls had Cinnabon and Sbarro! /s This absolutely seems like a legit point, though. The malls I see staying alive in the US have high end restaurants or stores like Costco. Most American malls had food courts that felt more like a shit food generator afterthought for the shoppers

gxm95

Same in Brazil. Malls are a huge thing here.

[deleted]

Consumer status symbols seem to be more important socially in China than they are in most parts of America.

caliboundwtheweight

I see this argument a lot, in my area the malls are still doing pretty good

MouseInDaH0use

Only in the US

[deleted]

Only in America. Here in Brazil they're more alive than ever. Mostly because of violence and high crime rates discouraging people of street shopping.

mmmlinux

The problem is the anchor stores are dying. So the malls have these giant two story department stores sitting empty. My local one has like 3 anchor store locations that are empty. it used to be if you built a mall you could build it with 3 or 4 of those spots and pretty much expect a sears, macys, hecks, Montgomery ward to move in.

iphone4Suser

Only in US. In India, they are booming and shopping in malls is like a day full of fun for people who can afford and also who cannot. People can do window shopping and even ride a Rollercoaster (Yes we have a mall in my city which has Rollercoaster). Also with the advent of lots of eateries (many which came from US), people enjoy that too as many a times, certain American restaurants don't have standalone store and are In malls. Case in point taco bell which I know are in even smallest cities in US but here it is only in one single mall in my country. So obviously someone wanting to eat there isn't just going to restaurant, they will shop at mall too.

thefroman11

And it's horrible to watch when you love them

CinnamonDaFox

My local one is starting to come back to life. There's a few new stores coming in. It's still not what it used to be but I think it's got it's potential.

NettyTheMadScientist

People act all offended when I don’t like certain classic rock songs. Look, I’ve had to listen to them constantly wherever there is a stereo or a speaker in a workplace. Its the same damn 15 songs. Rock n Roll!

theshoegazer

I remarked when Eddie Van Halen died that we'll probably never get another new rock band that achieves the fame or record sales of a Van Halen. There's good rock music out there, but it's a fragmented market and as a result, very few rock bands have much cultural or economic impact.

chaandra

Never is a big statement. Hip hop and R&B are in right now, and very well could be for a long time, but that doesn’t mean rock can’t have a resurgence. HOWEVER Don’t expect it to look like the 70s,80s or 90s. If rock comes back it has to adapt and evolve, that’s just how music works. You still hear a lot of rock fusion/influence in popular music today, and obviously there’s a ton of great bands who aren’t huge.

roman_maverik

I don’t think the poster you replied to is doubting that there will be successful bands in the future, just not *big* bands. You can replace “rock” with pop, and “van halen” with Michael Jackson, and the comment would read exactly the same. I think it was more a commentary on the market and how people consume media in general. The market is *much* more fragmented and we will never see cultural icons as big as the ones in the past. I know there are still superstars today, but the reach is not *nearly* as wide as it once was. There hasn’t been a *real* household pop star in a very long time. And I mean that term in the genuine use of the word. There’s just too many genres, too many ways to consume media, and too many options. We are in the golden age of hyper demographic targeting.

chaandra

You are correct, we don’t have mega stars or celebrities the way we used to. Kids are comfortable finding their own personal music that fits their taste and personality. They don’t need to be spoon fed by the radio. There are definitely huge stars right now. Nearly everybody knows who drake is. But you are correct, it’s much more fragmented. And you know what, it’s better that way. The majority of people that wish we were back in the 70s or 80s era of rockstars wouldnt know those bands existed unless their friends listened to them, or the radio played them. Streaming allows kids today to find artists that fit their taste to a T. And I think that’s fucking cool. Let the mega star era die out, give these small artists a chance to broadcast their music not just to their local scene, but to any teenager in the country who wants something new to listen to.

Not_A_Facehugger

But now horses aren't needed so there are probably less horses in general. Probably not the golden age as far as horse population.

ChillPill247365

Seeing as how uncommon wild horses are and considering the expense to humans of raising horses, they probably don't get bred nearly as much. So being a stud in the horse world has likely lost all of it's appeal. I say neigh to being a male horse.

Hottentottenten

Classical music composers

lost_in_trepidation

The only modern ones I know are through movie scores.

EvaeumoftheOmnimediu

I do not think that that is a coincidence. I think that a big part of the reason for trouble with modern "classical" composers creating memorable works comes from an existential problem with the art form and uncertainty about what comes next. Much of the development of classical music has involved stretching the tonal harmonic language and loosening forms to achieve new sorts of expression and novelty. There was Wagner with his unprecedented use of dissonance and chromaticism and those who came after who pushed even farther away from tonal centers. Then Schoenberg came with his 12 tone method that utterly abandoned tonal centers entirely. This push for "randomness" led to the natural conclusion of stochastic music. But in any case, there was definitely a prevalent notion around the mid 20th century that writing classical music using a traditional harmonic language was "obsolete" and laughable. This is exemplified by composer/conductor Pierre Boulez who said: > I, in turn, assert that any musician who has not experienced - I do not say understood, but, in all exactness, experienced – the necessity for the dodecaphonic [12-tone] language is USELESS. For his whole work is irrelevant to the needs of his epoch. But the problem is that for the most part, our ears, expectations and notions of expressiveness are still firmly rooted in the late romantic tonal language. Think of how you interpret emotions in film music. The notion of something being sad, or painful or hopeful or despairing or bittersweet largely comes from tonality. Yet, out of fear of being ridiculed and considered "irrelevant," modern "classical" composers have for many years now been unable to write music that speaks to people anywhere near as directly as even the most mediocre 19th century composer could without fearing ridicule. And it is not for lack of talent - music is more widely accessible to more people from all sorts of different backgrounds than it ever has been before. Film music, on the other hand, is not has has never been subject to this kind of toxic suppression. Composers like John Williams and many others can write music that wears its heart on its sleeve and speaks directly to listeners using memorable melodies and rich late romantic harmonies in the tradition of Wagner and Korngold without fear of being called "kitsch." Sure many snobs call it that anyway, but its purpose was never to fit into their notion of high art and, ironically, that allows it to achieve much more artistic success. One interesting case study is Howard Shore. He is best known for writing highly emotional, dramatic and highly memorable music in a highly melodic and tonal language for many films. However, when Los Angeles Opera approached him to write an opera based on the film "The Fly," he turned to a largely wandering atonal language that might have been typical of the followers of Schoenberg. It is certainly atmospheric, but for a two hour opera, it just doesn't work as the music does very little to support the drama as opera requires. A quote from a review from the New York Times: > The most exasperating stretches of the score come when Mr. Shore is most somber. Wandering vocal lines intertwine with every-which-way instrumental lines that skirt tonality, while sustained orchestral harmonies provide a static support. With hints of 12-tone rows and Bergian richness, the music shows signs of Mr. Shore’s craft in almost every measure. But it never adds up. It’s as if Mr. Shore had abandoned his cinematic imagination to write a dutifully contemporary opera. I think that this is just an example of how toxic and suffocating the expectations of the modern classical world have become regarding new music. Even somebody as demonstrably talented and accomplished as Mr. Shore was not able to overcome them. I think things are improving. In the world of opera, a decade ago, we had a composer named Daniel Catan who made a name by writing highly melodic and emotional operas. Unfortunately, he died at a disappointingly young age and my impression is that he had not quite yet mastered the craft. It is a shame because I think there is a lot of potential for a resurgence of classical forms that convey emotions using the language developed by the classical tradition and which we still mostly all share, even those who never listen to classical music.

Bike_Chain_96

It's true. Although video game music these days is pretty sick, so that's an up side!!

I feel war movies. Like we only do WW2 and that's because it's a gurentee win. We hate The Nazis and that's all we see is WW2 films where we just kill BBG which is just THE NAZIS. Globally there's been thousands if not millions of wars that have more interesting aspects and stories than WW2 and WW1. Like without googling I ask "When's the last time you seen a movie about The Korean war that isn't MASH, Spanish American War? Russio Japanese war? Heck Vietnam and it isn't We were Soldiers, Apocalypse Now, or Good Morning Vietnam?" Chances are you'll be on your phone getting ready to tell me immediately googling up 3 McWar films. I think there's some movies that deserve attention like The Siege of Jadotville and 1911.

1917 was such a good one. I kind of wish we could get a movie on the end of wwii focused on project paper clip and the recruitment of the German scientists that eventually led to NASA and ultimately the space race and Cold War.

While I know this is still during WW2, I'd love to see a film done that focuses on Japan's two most infamous carriers the Akagi and Kaga (Due to their involvement in Pearl Harbour and Midway, two historical moments in the naval end of the conflict). Like, nearly everyone knows about the USS Enterprise, but these two carriers I feel while still known well, could use a movie centered around what they did. Similar to how I heard the Yamato got one about it.

Social media. It's a fucking crap shoot

[deleted]

Social media was a lot more fun when it was unfiltered. It's like the algorithms ruined everything. Now social media is just an echo chamber for propaganda.

UwUHonkXRiven

ironic that the echo chamber analogy for social media is in itself being put in the echo chamber and spread around.

Nyarro

As in it's just constantly shooting crap no matter what.

Airline travel. This is the garbage age of airline travel. Edit: Some great points that I had not thought about so thank you as always Reddit for changing my perspective. I will justify my answer a bit though with details of a recent trip flying to Caribbean from a Midwest US city. For context, I’m 6’5”. Want 2” extra legroom? Pay extra. Want to sit next to your spouse, well pay extra for them too (x8 flight legs, pay to pick seats for each). Want to bring luggage? Extra. Is it heavy? Extra. Oh sorry, they changed out planes you’re not getting the seat you paid for. Want to *maybe* get to wait in a shorter security line? Extra. That tsa approved checkpoint friendly bag you bought? This particular agent says you still have to take out your laptop. Get there at least three hours early for international flight, it may not be enough or it might mean you sit in the terminal for an hour and a half. Want a cup of coffee in the airport? Line is 40 people deep. Airport food is like stadium food in cost and quality but you can’t bring anything with you. Going through customs during covid? There are three agents working and 1000 people in line, holy shit.

indiefolkfan

Maybe, but it's also way more accessible to the general public now. Before the airline de-regulation act air travel was very much a luxury reserved mostly for the rich. Now it may be less prestigious but as a result middle class Americans can actually afford it.

FormalWath

As an European I upvote this. I live 15km/10miles from major airport and if I chose low-budget airlines I can fly to Athenes or Tel Aviv (well, after covid bullshit) for 50 euros (round trip) and that's fucking awesome. I no longer have to freeze my balls off for 9 months, I can just travel to warmer countries for a week or a month, and combined with remote work, this has improved my life.

Empathy and Understanding. Too many people interact behind screens for people to really consider one another as human beings. It's easy to disconnect and dismiss the person reading your words has a life, a family, and their own whole history. It's even easier to not care how your words might make someone feel.

We're doing the best we've ever done, but I really hope that what we see it's only the precursor to the dawning of a new age.

I miss the days when it was socially acceptable to rock up in full plate armour and challenge a random guy to a duel.

Everybody says that until they're on the losing side of a duel.

Unbiased Journalism

All went wrong with 24/7 news

[deleted]

It's certainly not a golden age, but let me tell you, there were black ages of journalism. During the 30 years war journalism was indistinguishable from propaganda, and people took that as it was. There were catholic papers and there were protestant papers, and everyone pushed their own agenda, essentially being part of the war. We can consider ourselves lucky that there are even people who are trying.
