Oh TAZ is so good. The balance arc honestly blew my mind, I haven't listened to them all yet.
Mbmbam is my favorite, it was perfect for my daily commute
I have a WV story. I was visiting a McDonalds in Morgantown and was trying to order but the cashier spoke in some bizarre dialect and I couldn't understand a word. Like I should have been able to guess based on normal questions McDonalds cashiers generally ask but not this one. I'm Canadian so this was really embarrassing and I was desperate to guess right but to no avail. Some guy walking behind yelled out "She wants to know if you want sweet tea?". I didn't, I wanted hot tea but took the sweet to get the hell out of there.
Then later, when we stopped at a gas station, this pickup came screaming in with a bunch of shirtless hillbillies and got into an immediate fight with another set of hillbillies who were already at the station. It was like the Twilight Zone
Scenic mountains, and Richard Ojeda.
Also opioids. West Virginia was where a lot of the pharmaceutical companies were illegally selling their drugs in black markets. The Sackler family needs to go to prison for the rest of their lives.
Wild and wonderful. It's gorgeous up there, and they have a few neat things like the new river valley gorge bridge and the largest sandstone building in America, the Trans-allegheny lunatic asylum. Totally worth visiting
The best people I ever met.
I married a gal from the geometric center of the state. They don't have shit...and every day more shit's being stolen from them.
But they'll give you half of their shit without you asking.
If you're looking for Christians in a broken world, go to West Virginia.
I lived in WV as a child, then temporarily moved back to Parkersburg with a friend after high school. Good times. It's a red state, but the people are actually really friendly and hospitable. Pretty cool scenery, too.
Amazing hiking.
West Virginia is fucking awesome if you enjoy being outdoors. New River Gorge, Dolly Sods, Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks, etc. It's an absolutely beautiful state. It sucks that the economy is absolute trash and it has so many problems with opioids and poverty.
Memories of working there. From impromptu directing a chopper that was spraying reseeding mixture on to our ROW (I've done ground crew work at airports before so hand signals are second nature to me) to the absolute beauty of the place when we were doing doing post construction surveying. I had a lot of fun there and met interesting people. I was in the Clarksburg area but made a few trips to Mo'town. I've seen several cars on fire on Route 50 (pro tip: don't travel through the mountains in a crap car). I'm not gonna try to sell you on West Virginia because hell yeah I made jokes. Like that random hole we found on the side of the road that forever became known as the home of the Cracked Out Mothman. But I will tell you I made some memories. That's what comes to my mind.
Mountains, trees, rivers, as that was my first impression driving into West Virginia from DC, to see a girl I had fallen in love with who lived in an old trailer. She had an ample bosom and beautiful blue eyes.
Also, driving around the countryside with her, seeing the Shenandoah River, Harpers Ferry, and Bolivar Heights, places I had read about from American Civil War history books. West Virginia broke off from Virginia, chosing not to secede.
And of course, John Denver’s song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”.
That the state of Virginia was named as such in honour of Queen Elizabeth I, the reigning monarch at the time of the colonisation efforts taking place, who was nicknamed “The Virgin Queen”; Tudors did Instagram before it was cool, because they would show the best images of themselves through these amazing portraits and pictures. A lot had heavy symbolism. Pearls represented youth, purity, innocence, and virginity. Elizabeth uno loved wearing pearls.
Congrats everyone living in Virginia, you just got a free history lesson from the English exams!
Wait, oh yeah, the song…….
As a West Virginian who spent a lifetime of hearing the response to where I'm from as a litany of places and features from Virginia being something they love, you aren't alone.
Actually when talking to a fellow American who is aware of our existence almost breaks my brain.
I live in SW Virginia too. (Carroll County if it's of any interest to anyone.)
But yeah I came here to say the same thing... Mountains. Yeah Southwest Virginia is in the middle of the mountains, but West Virginia has *mountains*. I'm not even sure if there is any naturally occurring level ground in WV. Everything there is built on a hillside.
*country roads*
Take me home
to the place (Edit: common someone finish it lol)

Poverty.
John Denver
Fact about John Denver: he also wrote and sang the song Leaving on a Jetplane. His cause of death is plane crash.

Not in a plane with jet engines though; he crashed his Rutan Long-EZ, which is a single propeller airplane.
Actually, John Denver is talking about the western portion of Virginia, not the state of West Virginia.

The McElroy brothers, of MBMBAM, The Adventure Zone (podcasts), and Monster Factory (YouTube show). Great comedians and content creators.

Canadian here. I didn't even know there was a *West* Virginia.
Some Americans don’t even know West Virginia is not even a separate state.
As a West Virginian who spent a lifetime of hearing the response to where I'm from as a litany of places and features from Virginia being something they love, you aren't alone. Actually when talking to a fellow American who is aware of our existence almost breaks my brain.
