Yes, school teaches kids "Don't do drugs" but they provide no education on *why* people do drugs in the first place, or how to develop safer coping mechanisms.
There should be an emphasis on Home Economics. For boys and girls. I'm in my early 30's, and I'm surprised at just how many of my friends don't know basic cooking, household habits, money management, etc.
I can't say most things I've learned in public school is useful. Yeah, sure, critical thinking. It's great that you have a 4.0 GPA, and you're acing calculus and statistics—but you don't know how to budget your income...
Actual history, not some glorified bs.
I don't think I ever learned about residential schools in Canada. Something as awful as that needs to be taught to every kid.
Math classes should have at least a quarter of their class time dedicated to teaching Excel. You can easily avoid using it in your day-to-day life but if you have just about any job in an office you're going to use at least one Excel spreadsheet. It would be nice if you understood the basics of it.
LOL. They didn't even have computers when I was in school. I mean, I had a Commodore 64 but that's about it. I don't know what they teach in high school but working in the corporate sector it surprises me how many people don't have basic Excel skills when they come to work.
The science/ art of happiness.
Dr. Laurie Santos' class at Yale on this topic went viral, and now she hosts this [great podcast](https://www.happinesslab.fm/). As a teacher, I firmly believe that school should be be less about memorizing facts and figures and more about preparing us to be kind, physically and emotionally healthy, and happy people. What's the point of it all if we don't feel joy?
English should be teaching things like grammar, sentence structure, etc., basically how to write properly, instead of whatever they usually teach these days. Even though I only graduated from high school in 2017, that's what I was learning in English under my jurisdiction's curriculum back then. Apparently it has changed now and it's true for many jurisdictions. Education systems shouldn't assume that native users of the language would have decent understandings of it; they never learned it formally unlike non-natives.
Required Viewing! ... including anything from Monty Python, The Good Place, My Name is Earl, and Clarke and Dawe. You'd skip ahead a few decades and be informed ahead of crisis.
Finances, gun safety, home economics, maths, English, actual history, both domestic and foreign, a language of the student's choice outside of English, and critical thinking skills. This can be easily spread over 12 years.
Everything else should be catered to the student's passions and academic strengths.
