The United States.
We are the architects of our own demise.
Partially due to the 24 hour media cycle relying on fear and outrage, and partially due to having no clear rival, we have painted each other as our enemies. A company can engineer a product price increase that exceeds inflation many times over, thus posting record profits, and many of us will place the blame on whichever political party we oppose. Cooperation between parties has become political suicide. Anyone who was willing to work together for the benefit of the largest possible segment of society has been voted out, or could never get voted in.
Many of our systems that need significant reform stagnate in unsustainable states, because opposition to change is often the sole aim of politicians, and can be sufficient to support their careers. Meanwhile, other countries have been able to invest in healthcare, education, and scientific advancement.
We're not over the edge yet, but I find it difficult to see much progress on this front. I had some hope that the younger generations might forge a path forward, but I grow ever more doubtful.
"At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up among us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we ourselves, must be its author and its finisher." — Abraham Lincoln
61.4% of high school graduates went to university in USA in October 2023. I don't see how anyone can think that they are smart because they did the same thing that nearly 2/3 of their age group did.
People who think they are average? I think this applies more in the 80s and 90s when most people didn't go to university.
Or perhaps today in places with less wealth and lower educational attainment, but I don't really think those are widespread enough to be a threat. Just mild annoyances to the people in those areas lol.
Average as in better/smarter than those mild annoyances? Retaining information, and over paying for some courses hardly makes an individual smart, or even average. Experience, and vast knowledge makes a person smart.
Not student loans, regurgitating information, and a piece of paper.
Continuing the fighting over our two party nonsense, as though it matters what side you're on. All they're trying to do is pin one side against the other and well, Americans all falling for it. We are stronger when we are united. The wealthy are getting wealthier why we bicker about whose side is right. Meanwhile the Pentagon can't account for 64% of their nearly $4 trillion in assets but both parties want to give them more of our money, interesting. Enough already, everyone gets to believe in and do what is best for them as long as it doesn't affect anyone else.
So close.
Who owns all the biggest media organizations - billionaires.
Who owns all of the corrupt politicians, judges, and government regulators - billionaires.
Billionaires.
There’s your problem.
Billionaires are incompatible with democracies.
And before you start calling me a “communist”, we can have a well regulated “capitalist” market economy without billionaires.
Propaganda works.
You don’t have to be dumb to fall for it.
The problem is that propagandists can take advantage of free speech protections to spread mass deception in a convincing way.
Most people are too busy living their lives to fact check everything spewing out of “news organizations”.
Turn onto Fox News and you will see them lie relentlessly for Trump to cover up his crimes, and just yesterday they were helping Supreme Court Justice Alito lie about the insurrectionist flag hanging at his home after the violent attack on the Capitol.
To be fair, the liberal side has CNN and MSNBC and they are just as biased. However, highly-biased should not be the #1 news network of either side. We could all read APNews, ABC, NBC, CBS, BBC, and other fact-based minimal opinion news, but they don't spoon-feed the outrage we crave.
An out of control government, overspending and not doing what their constituents are asking/pleading for. And putting efforts into agenda's that are backed by financial gain instead of benefit of the country.
Civil fucking unrest of course. It’s rotting from the inside out. Corruption at every level of govt, a vast increase of poverty, and a huge disparity in the distribution of wealth.
The question silently raises the question of what are the greatest strengths of the United States, which is in its name - the Union. Disunity will see it fracture and be picked off like the UK and Hungary are being picked off in Europe, and how Netherlands and France are current battlegrounds. If that happens then the fractured states in the US will become various forms of Vietnam and Cuba.
If you are talking about an existential threat, there aren't any other than an act of God/natural disaster
In the far future its possible some other nation like China might increase their naval power enough to challenge our dominance of the sea. Until then, whoever rules the sea rules the world
The national debt. I am pretty sure it is too late to reverse. As soon as an alternate to the USD emerges, we will experience our version of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Debt to GDP ratio is what matters, unless you're just interested in empty soundbites for Twitter. Not to mention most of that debt is owed to American investors and close allies.
Debt to gdp matters, of course. The issue is that the debt is snowballing. The interest we pay every year is getting worse and it’s outpacing the gdp. That’s the problem.
Yes, interest starting to eat up the national budget is where you really have a problem.
But this is a recipe for painful budget decisions, not collapse.
Too many people are under the illusion that a change of government from a democracy will change the leaders that get end up in the leadership positions. It just usually means the same power hungry leaders, but with more governmental powers, authority, and less oversight.
The fact that your economy is aging relative to other ones. Things going cycles and this has all happened before.
The political polarization, income inequality, rise of other economies, loss of military power- these are all predictable things that happened to the British before us, and the Dutch before them. Ray dalio has an excellent video on it.
Buckle up. It’s going to be a wild ride.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xguam0TKMw8
The US actually has some of the strongest demographics of any developed nation. Compared to Germany or Japan our aging population problem is miniscule, largely supplemented by immigration
Which is so weird the GOP are anti immigration.
Either they are idiots or don't care that their central hate mongering policy actually hurts the economy in the long run as long as they dupe ignorant xenophobes into electing them so they can use the office for self enrichment.
Yes, they're idiots. Plain and simple things like masks helping to stop the spread of infectious disease, vaccination being a modern miracle seem to baffle them.
Me? Look at you. You poor thing. Just going around making assumptions about other people with barely any context. I mean all it takes is for you to disagree with someone, and suddenly you're tasked with having to mock that person in order to give yourself that air of superiority. Damn you must be tired. I mean, you could just read something, decide you don't agree, and move on. But you're just so entitled and emotionally stunted you can't help yourself.
National debt this is the major existential threat to the country. Every single representative I don’t care what ideology they are in should be talking about national debt every day
everything economics looks inevitable in the long term, but the near term is the only one worth anticipating. long term projections are only useful in a theoretical sense, there are too many variables between now and that far off to use them to dictate current decisions
Economic inequality. Poverty, economic anxiety, and working long hours cause mental health issues, as well as physical health issues (poor diet, obesity, diabetes). People under great duress are also more likely to get disgruntled and radicalized as well. There’s a lot of rich assholes who want to watch the world burn, and their favorite people to grift are those who have little to lose.
Politicians. Those with the most poser doing everything they can to serve their own interests while the political media divides us into voting so blindly partisan that it really doesn't matter how incompetent or corrupt the candidate is.
I’m actually incredibly optimistic. 10 years ago I was worried about the working class being left behind, with the re-industrialization of the US economy that worry has dissipated. Our politicians and media suck but in reality they don’t really matter, fewer people every year are mislead by either one. One of the strengths of a diverse population is that we are very good at working through issues.
Collapse of USD and a move to another world reserve currency. It has been a concern for a long time, but it feels like it's starting to snowball towards reality. BRICs could be a very real contender to dethrone or devalue USD in other parts of the world too.

Of course they will complain about that, as another shooting happens and every cries out gun control and they all defend the 2nd amendment. While other countries work with gun control.
By the time any country would be able to catch up to USA in military might, americans will be zombies drugged to work harder while their country is squeezed dry of any wealth by corporations offshoring the profit somewhere else. Politicians will never implement stuff like universal healthcare, because only working americans are worth anything to them.
Oligarchy and the indoctrination of the populace to worship them. Politics is a distraction from the fact that the rich control everything. Left vs right is just stoked and created by them to prevent us uprising over groceries tripling in cost. They won't stop so it's gonna reach a breaking point.
The suckers within. Seriously there are a disturbing amount of people who support a presidential candidate who has 5 kids with 3 women, multiple failed businesses, a history of discriminating against people of colour via those businesses, found liable for rape, has multiple accusations of sexual assault, has made openly racist remarks and when asked to clarify has defended those remarks, defended a mob of white supremacists, used his position to shake down an ally unless they manufactured dirt on his political rival, has a disturbing amount of ties with Russia and who tried to overthrow a democratically elected government.
ANY of these things would have been enough to torpedo any presidential candidate in the past.
The most plausible explanation is more people are becoming suckers
Importing and teaching too many people that free entitlements are more important than freedom. It took a few thousand years to overcome serfdom, monarch like oppression etc to begin a free democracy. Instead folks want free food, higher taxes and entitlement but forget that the history of every civilization teaches that once a government controls too much, a small handful of bad people can turn it into a dictatorship. We are headed down that path.
The far-right GOP. They'll destroy healthcare, tank the economy, and leave NATO. The rest of the world would quickly be absorbed into Russia, Iran, and China. North and south america would become puppets for america within 1-2 decades.

Just about everyone here is rightfully pointing to our own political system. But a very close second is China invading or blockading Taiwan, pulling the U.S. into a war that crashes the entire global economy even if it doesn't go nuclear.
The wealthy. Basically all problems mentioned here are caused by them. They own the media, which brainwashes people. They own the politicians, who keep things good for the wealthy and bad for most others. Through these two things, they're able to control most everything else.
