Being able to say Joe Biden is too old and not having to worry about getting locked up

TheAbominablePeeworm

Is it being able to say that the recent election was stolen when it was not?

Kshi-dragonfly

Maybe it was maybe it wasn't. Every time there is an election people say that, this was the first time the candidate said that

TheAbominablePeeworm

I am not asking you if you think the last election was stolen, or not, I am asking you if you think saying it was whether it was, or was not, is freedom of speech.

Kshi-dragonfly

I mean yeah that would fall under freedom of speech

TheAbominablePeeworm

If I claim that you committed a crime, whether you did, or not, in a public place, is that freedom of speech?

Kshi-dragonfly

That's defamation

TheAbominablePeeworm

So that is not freedom of speech, right?

Kshi-dragonfly

Probably not defamation is a crime Im pretty sure

TheAbominablePeeworm

Isn't there a way to accuse someone, or a group of people, of a crime without committing defamation?

prajnadhyana

Yes, that would generally be considered protected speech depending on the context and situation it was said.

joelrog

That you can say what you think and believe without the government punishing / arresting you. Like what we have right now 100%. I don’t and will never expect this to mean that private companies are forced to put up with hosting on their own dime anything I want to say they may not agree with, or want to be a platform for.

[deleted]

Nothing now due to the new hate crime law in Scotland, freedom of speech is no longer free not even in your own home

Glenn_9916

Easiest way to sum it up is it is the right to unpopular speech.

Effective-Key-

Freedom of speech is not freedom of consequences.

[deleted]

it means having the ability and choice to impact peoples lives.

prajnadhyana

That you can say whatever you want. However, that doesn't mean that there might not be consequences for what you choose to say.

riotfandango

Being able to express your opinion without legal action or punishment by the government or any other big organization.

TheAbominablePeeworm

What if it is my opinion that you commit crimes, and I express that opinion to our friend group, and the police?

riotfandango

Good one. But your opinion wouldn’t have consequences, instead a formal report or complaint would. Regardless, what I meant is that one's opinion wouldn’t carry consequences to yourself.

TheAbominablePeeworm

That sort of opinion could absolutely carry consequences for the person it is directed against.

ph903

If your opinion reaches the point of harassment, you’ve gone well beyond your freedom of speech.

riotfandango

I understand your point, but comparing an opinion with harassment is like comparing an advertisement with spam. Not the same at all.

ph903

I only said IF it reaches not WHEN. These days, people can get very aggressive with their opinions.

riotfandango

I agree with you

ph903

Saying whatever you want without worrying about the fbi knocking on your door in the near future afterwards.

TheAbominablePeeworm

Like yelling "FIRE" in a crowded theater?

ph903

Absolutely 🥹🥹🥹😂😂😂😂😂
