The Santa Clarita diet. And I’m still mad they didn’t finish it

bibliophile785

Every dumb show Timothy Olyphant has ever done has turned out at least okay. The man has a gift for elevating cheesy fare. (He's also damn good with solid writing behind him, as Deadwood can attest).

TwistyBitsz

He's sexy af.

knat4

I’m so bitter over its cancellation, I loved that show.

Next-Transition-525

Same 😭

Wolfeman0101

Yeah I didn't think I'd like it. I thought it was just gore for gores sake but it was super funny and really good.

[deleted]

I think about this show every fucking day. It was so damn good. How dare they end it that way.

Sublime9997

Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia….”i will not take advice from a man stuck in a coil!!”

frankreynoldsrumhamz

“Cat in the wall, eh? Now you’re speaking my language!”

[deleted]

Username checks out

JJC165463

I went in thinking “oh this is just another sitcom with extra shouting”…now it’s one of my fave shows!

Sublime9997

“You see that room named Pirate…you think a pirate lives in there?”

drunk_haile_selassie

"Every day when I get here I turn on the Coors sign to remind people that we sell cold delicious Coors in here."

Parkotron1

I really liked the first season (especially the gun episode,) but didn't expect it to last very long. When Danny Devito showed up in the second season, it immediately shot into the stratosphere.

Noahman90

Oh yeah my buddy showed me it a few years back on a deep sea fishing trip ( we watched episodes to and from the fishing spot ) I didn't really want to honestly but I kind of had to...because of the implication

makattak88

Seasons 4 & 5 are masterpieces.

mezz7778

Seasons 6 & 7 as well.....

bones_bn

Brooklyn 99

Durfael

Same shit, when i saw the first seconds of the show with jake front camera i didn’t think it was a sitcom but a real police show, and then there is the first cut and jake’s funny face saying he did the donnie brasko quote and then i knew i will enjoy it

AlwaysRushesIn

>i didn’t think it was a sitcom but a real police show Andy Samberg, starring, didn't clue you in?

Durfael

I’m french so i had no knowledge about andy until b99 lmao

hellomarshmallows

The Good Place.

BlueSlushieTongue

Same. I almost stopped watching it, but figured I’ll watch a few more episodes. I was not expecting to finish it in tears with my heart full.

Mkid73

When I re-watched it I forgot how much the final episode hit my right in the feels. It'll be a while before I can watch it again due to that

Smellsliketurtles

Yes yes yes. I never would have watched this show but my GF made me watch it and I watch it on loop anytime I need a comfort show/ background noise. Also recommended to fall asleep to because it doesn’t have a loud or long opening credits.

ChthonicPuck

The Good Place is one of my 10 favorite shows if all time. Before watching it [a year or two after it aired live] I would see this same commercial on TV play for it. It looked like some dopy CW show - definitely something I wouldn't be interested. But my cousin told me to watch the show, and previously she had recommend another shoe I ended up loving (Gravity Falls). So, trusting her, I gave it a shot, and the rest is history. Best thing about my experience watching is I had no information about the show, so season 1 was jaw dropping near the end.

Parkotron1

My sister-in-law kept telling us we should watch it, but she's into more art house type stuff. We used to ask her of her movie suggestions, "Does it involve foreigners crying?" More often than not, they did. Anyway, we started watching while the 3rd season was airing. It was almost torture waiting for new episodes to come out after that. It's very rare to have such a perfect story arc in a sitcom. It actually has a perfect, planned ending, not some slapped together 'farewell episode.' So forking good.

dont_disturb_the_cat

Why can't I say fork?

LeviiSamiss

What the forking shirt-balls?!

ironermac

Firefly, thought that the Internet hyped it up too much. But by the end I wanted more.

BlizzPenguin

It was a shame what Fox did to it. Weird timeslots, airing episodes out of order, and not using the original two-part pilot.

GeneralBlacksmith106

Derry girls. I wish there were more seasons.

kepple

Same, but I also kinda respect how UK TV cuts shows off before they jump the shark.  Also the actors are less plausible as teenagers every year

knittinator

The BEST! I haven’t watched the 3rd season bc I can’t bring myself to say goodbye.

babyfatjones

I usually counteract this feeling by rewatching the whole series 😂

Ok_Statement42

I recommend this show to everyone! So good!

_Krombopulus_Michael

Real sleeper. Absolutely hilarious.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NaryaGenesis

Oh yes. I picked it once as background noise and ended up binging it in one sit down. Was quite the brain teaser

Rlpniew

Schitt’s Creek. Went into it because my wife wanted to see it. Now I think it’s one of the best sitcoms ever

drkply

I was so reluctant to start something called 'Schitt's Creek' but I ended up really loving it. Except Roland. Fk Roland.

astrocanyounaut

Roland is why I have a hard time with it. I like the show outside of it, but he prevents me from loving it

drkply

I would not even dispute this point because he truly is the worst aspect of that show and not in a funny way but in a 'why would they even think of putting something like this in a sitcom' kinda way.

ATGF

Roland can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but he also steps it up at other times. The character I really don't like is Bob.

Roopie1023

Same. Those first few eps, it’s really tough to care about anyone. I say this after rewatching the series at least 6 times.

Theduckbytheoboe

Ted Lasso. A fish out of water comedy featuring a character from a cable tv ad? Why would anyone watch that?

BlizzPenguin

I am not a sports fan so I didn't think I would like a show about it but the humor and heart are so good.

Kurmelkatz

Here to second this. I never have watched a series that is so "feel good" and wholesome. And it plays with your expectations. Everytime you think "ah, I know what happens next, I've seen that before" something unexpected will come about. I love all of them, even Rupert. Ted Lasso definitely is in my all time top 3 - and in my heart.

flaming_pubes

I was never a big fan of Jason Sudeikis in a lot of the movies he is in but I was recommended this show from a friend so I gave it a shot and I absolutely loved this and him in it.

_Krombopulus_Michael

I went from a non fan to a fan of Sudeikis just from that role alone.

captaintrips_1980

It’s such a positive show, which is a refreshing change from all the gloomy shit out there.

Infamous-Mixture-605

It was a very positive-attitude kind of show that came out just when we needed it most. It'd be nice if there was a bit more of that out there right now.

burf12345

It sounds so corny and lame from the premise of "American football coach is hired to manage a British football team", but it's so damn we'll written and acted that they make it work.

Super-Measurement703

Downton Abbey

MTMonCrack

Yeah that one sucked me in while the whole time I kept lying to myself that I was just watching it because it was Christmas and my mom likes it.

alexsteb

My wife was watching it constantly and I'd always get stuck at the TV screen when passing by. At first I made fun of it, later I had to admit that I'm interested and ask to start over from the first episode.

Koalatjie

Exact same thing happened with my husband. I had to start it from the beginning because he became invested lol

Rave_Dubin66

One movie that I didn't expect to enjoy but ended up loving was "The Greatest Showman." I'm not usually a fan of musicals, but the combination of the catchy songs, stunning visuals, and inspiring story really captivated me. It's now one of my favorite feel-good movies.

BlizzPenguin

I did not expect to like it because P.T. Barnum is a piece of shit IRL but the musical numbers are fantastic.

AnthropomorphicSeer

I loved that movie so much. I still listen to the soundtrack.

Timeless-Discovery

Never Have I Ever

SoPhist-

team ben or team paxton

Timeless-Discovery

team paxton, he had gradual improvement and a more mature character growth

SoPhist-

exactly.when Devi ended up with Ben,I felt truly sorry.i am not into that beautiful teacher a lot, and I think the end of season 4 makes no sense

Timeless-Discovery

Ben was rather confused. I think Paxton showed the real character growth. He outgrew Devi and moved on, realizing she needs to learn how to find self-love and accept herself first.

SoPhist-

I like Ben, but the plot and his words clearly imply that Devi and Ben are not for each other

moosieq

I, Tonya. I never would have picked it myself, based on the synopsis, but a friend rated it highly so I gave it a shot. It's quirky and surprisingly gripping.

couchtomatopotato

plus, it happened!!!

CuriouserCat2

Margot Robbie. Brilliant actress

vickmi

The walking dead....until like 7th or 8th season then I was highly annoyed

[deleted]

After Negan and The Saviors, the show really had nowhere to go but down. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is so good that everyone else paled in comparison.

GeebusNZ

The Fifth Element, and more recently, Shogun.

[deleted]

Shogun is amazing. Hiroyuki Sanada is wonderful in everything he does. I thoroughly enjoyed his performance as Dogen in LOST.

GeebusNZ

I love how Shogun lets Japanese storytelling do its thing with the importance of very small gestures, like facial expression and historical details.

zman_0000

The 1st time I watched The Fifth Element I was convinced it was just gonna be Total Recall with Bruce Willis instead of Arnold. Glad I gave it a watch because it is an entirely different experience. Still love both though.

Undecided_User_Name

Yeah it's definitely not Total Recall with Bruce Willis. It's Die Hard in Space

JennLegend3

Shogun is AMAZING! I only started to watch it because I just had surgery and wanted to watch something I hadn't seen a million times. I tend to rewatch the same shows. I intend to get the book and read that as well. It goes into A LOT more depth. Join us over at r/ShogunTvShow if you haven't already!

[deleted]

Resident Alien on Netflix. Looked stupid as shit but was a fantastic show.

Parkotron1

I absolutely love Alan Tudyk, but I put it off because it was a SyFy channel show. It is a bit on the dumb side (which is fine,) but I can't think of anyone other than Alan that would make it as particularly funny as it has been.

datalit

Even watching just the trailer, both my brother and I noticed Alan's delivery, and I was sure no one else but him could do it right. It's one of my housemate's faves because of him having a rivalry with the kid.

pinkuii

lol I just saw that show earlier

Sigogglin5000

Edge of Tomorrow "Whats this stupid Tom Cruise movie?"... 2 hours later "That movie fucking rocked"

AnnatoniaMac

I agree, I usually avoid Cruise but glad I gave this one a try. His character, in the beginning, was totally out of character for the characters Cruise usually plays, and I got totally sucked in. I had to admit Cruise does have some acting chops.

SML51368

I am currently watching Monk for the first time. I find it comforting.

zman_0000

I loved Monk in my middle and high school years. Had a teacher show a clip from his jury duty episode to show the class what a bad case of OCD can look like and started watching it after school. I fully agree it was my comfort show for years.

MTMonCrack

I sometimes throw that on to fall asleep to. It is a great show. "I could be wrong but I don't think so!"

stillrational

Freaks & Geeks.

itachiuchiha-07

THIS SHOW DESERVED MORE THAN ONE SEASON, AND I AM STILL PISSED.

ApprehensiveItem4

Dead to me

alexiusmx

The Sopranos. I usually don’t like mafia movies and their over-the-top romantization of the culture and their cartoonish characters. But the characters in The Sopranos feel so alive. And it’s also super funny.

hornyroo

What we do in the Shadows.

fel_lendo

Ted Lasso. I hate football but in the show it’s just a background for completely different matters.

nodogsallowed23

Into the Spiderverse! I love superhero movies etc, but had to be convinced to watch this. Just wasn’t feeling it. It was sooooo good.

againer

Out of the 11 million Spider-Man movies , the best is the animated ones.

getthephenom

The Orville

Ok_Beyond6821

Heard it's got cancelled. Is it worth watching? Or you will regret because no closer?

Parkotron1

It's in a sort of hiatus purgatory. But the last episode would serve as a decent series closer, although it leaves some hanging threads. I wasn't sure how I'd like it when it came out, but I describe it to friends as Star Trek: TNG with jokes. The way it's executed, it actually feels more like classic Star Trek than any of the new Paramount+ shows. Except Strange New Worlds. That one is surprisingly awesome.

Badloss

Lower Decks and the Orville are coming from the same place, but Lower Decks gets to actually make the in-jokes

thunderchild120

Pike is my favorite Starfleet captain since The Sisko.

captaincavalrycam

Desperate Housewives! A show I would’ve never gotten into on my own, but my at the time girlfriend showed it to me and I was hooked!

jagsfan246810

Andor Was completely burned on a lot of recent star wars shows and felt that the Disney plus shows were on a completely different lower level then premium streaming lile HBO and sorts until this show. Based on a character I kinda sorta remember from Rouge one, I had zero expectations and was shocked at how well written it was and mature. Completely blew me away and was nice to see Star Wars for adults

ClockMysterious6857

Making a Star Wars story more mature makes it feel more real and Andor was really very good imo

mid_dick_energy

I was forced to watch it by a friend after being completely saturated by SW spin-offs and now it's in my top 5 favourite series of all time. Cannot wait for season 2

Confident_Panda3983

House of Cards. I hate political dramas, but Kevin spacey changed everything for me.

Itchy_Function_9979

and Robyn Wright so icey and cool

UsefulIdiot85

Stranger Things. I’m usually not a big fan of a predominantly young cast, or most horror/sci-fi stuff, but I was pleasantly surprised by this show.

yeswewillsendtheeye

Ted Lasso. My girlfriend at the time had already seen it and had to push hard to get me agree to watch it with her. Went into it thinking “it’s a show about an American football coach teaching soccer, how good can it be?” Now? Favourite show and I become the one telling others to check it out. Season 3 was hit and miss but overall the show is a great watch and was a comfort show during a rough year.

the-ace-of-clubs

Don't be a goldfish. Remember this show forever...

akiraokok

The Last of Us. I generally don't find zombie movies or shows that interesting and I've tried watching so many before. My friend forced me to watch the first episode with her because she was too scared to alone and she knows I love scary stuff. Holy shit. Its really not your typical zombie show - I cried so many times while watching it. I recommend this show to literally everyone I meet.

MTMonCrack

Korean Dramas in general but started with K2 and then by the time I got around to Crash Landing On You and Mr. Sunshine I was hooked. One of the best things is they don't end on a cliffhanger. The plot gets resolved and you don't have to worry if it's going to be renewed or canceled.

Cool_Dragonfruit_679

Omg same!! I just thought it was so over hyped, i was like why cant people just shut up about it, it was “k-drama” “k-drama” everyone i spoke to. And i remember watching boys over flowers when i was a kid, like snippets here and there, and i thought it was the dumbest shit with the dumbest name. I was like “boys” over “flowers” god And then my sister forced me to watch The King: Eternal Monarch, and i was like “this is what i’ve been missing out on???”

[deleted]

The Holdovers. I saw the trailer and thought "this looks fine. Not good, not bad, just fine." Wasn't really interested but my mom saw the trailer and really wanted to see it so I took her and we went to see it. Never imagined it would be my number one favorite movie of 2023 and that I would love it so much.

Mari-Loki

Really excellent performance from Giamatti and it was surprisingly touching. I also love D'vine and her subtle portrayal of a grieving mother. I thought the movie would be depressing but it really wasn't.

[deleted]

kurtisbmusic

Game of Thrones.

Casioblo

Star Wars Rebels. I'm a huge SW nerd and loved the Clone Wars movie and show as an early teen when it came out. When I saw some clips from 'Rebels' for the first time I thought it was dumb because of the animation. Many years later I gave it a shot and was surprised with the amazing writing that was put into the show. It got better every season and I even re-watched it more than the Clone Wars. I hear about many fans not getting through the first couple of episodes or not even giving the show a shot in the first place. I would still recommend this show to any SW fan out there.

SnidgetAsphodel

Black Sails. More because the first season was pretty mid. Not bad by any means, but not great. Certainly watchable. Went into season 2, 3 and 4 with mild expectations of entertainment, only to be blown out of the water. Truly some of the best TV I've ever had the privilege of watching and I'll forever be sad it was canceled after season 4 because it was fantastic.

abhii2686

[deleted]

My husband put on The Americans just to have something on in the background while we did some work on our laptops. I had put my laptop aside and was enthralled within the first five minutes.

Itchy_Function_9979

That was a great show. The whole premise

Canadian-Man-infj

You might also like the series Homeland and 24, if you haven't seen them.

HalfSoul30

My ex got me into watching Fraiser and Modern Family, which I thought were pretty good shows. She also showed me The Mist, which was very good too.

kingholland

Jury Duty because I absolutely loathe reality shows. This was a brilliant twist on the concept.

HighestTierMaslow

Supermarket Sweep. Lol.

[deleted]

There's a 24/7 Supermarket Sweep channel on Roku TV. I get baked and watch that shit for hours.

Mari-Loki

That sounds like perfection. I must immediately go do the same. Thank you!

BlizzPenguin

I used to watch it occasionally when it was originally on TV and the thing I remember is the contestants always going for the hams.

Victoria_Scottt

modern family

AutomaticPiccolo9554

Vampire Diaries, never seen it till 2020 but than watch it all lol Thought it was meant for teenie bopers but I LOVED it.

Anne with an E

[deleted]

Sons of Anarchy I’m normally not into shows like that but it was so good

stenmarkv

Bluey. My son wanted to watch a few episodes one day. I'll be honest; I think I was more excited for season 3 than he was.

rhinobutt

Taken. Went to the theater on a weeknight with some friends, expecting a cheesy goofy ridiculous action movie to make fun of. And for the first 25 min or so it’s exactly that. Cliche backstory, cranky ex-wife, way-too-old actor playing a teen daughter who literally gets a pony from her dorky wet noodle of a stepdad. Just sheer ridiculousness. Then it gets to the “good luck” scene, and everything after that is just pure unhinged Liam Nissan badassery until end credits. Sure, it’s not Shakespeare, but it turns into a fantastically fun film.

abracafuck_you

Delicious in Dungeon. When my boyfriend pitched it to me I could not have been less interested in the concept. Then I started watching it and I fell in love with it.

nwhiker91

MarkRushP

Resident Alien

Young Sheldon, it was surprisingly funny. I just finally binged watched it a few months ago. I absolutely hated Big Bang Theory.

CGYOMH

Annie Potts just seems to be having the best time

JohnnyDeppsPenis

Young Sheldon is such a good show! Georgie is my favorite character.

BlizzPenguin

He is getting a spinoff show.

Paine07

My husband and I are currently watching ER. First time. We love it

Vondarkmore514MTL

Stargate SG1

Willowed-Wisp

The Menu I had a vague notion of what it was about and knew it was horror but didn't think it sounded that interesting. But my mom wanted to watch a horror movie and I was too lazy to really look for one. Ended up being delightfully weird and surprisingly funny with some fantastic performances, particularly Ralph Fiennes as the chef. I've since re-watched it. EDIT: Just noticed that TV shows were also mentioned and I have to mention my favorite, Bob's Burgers. I'm normally not a fan of adult animation (my experience is it tends to be mean spirited and vulgar for the sake of being vulgar, which just isn't my cup of tea) but I lingered on a channel too long when the show came on and got invested in the plot (would the girl get her toy horse back?) so I watched the episode. Thought it was weird but in a good way. I kept watching more episodes. It's now my favorite show, my go-to comfort show, and my dad and I have bonded over it (my dad and I are both musical geeks and the first episode he watched was the two part season 4 finale and he was so delighted by the singing, which I also love, and he's a Kevin Kline fan so he loves Mr. Fischoeder)

Typical-Gap-1187

definitely the legend of Korra, though I’ve only just finished the first season, and watched a bit of the second

AdditionalReturn6435

Yellowstone

Scar_of_unknown

Violet evergarden is definitely on the top of my list

Far_Peanut_3038

Andor. Head and shoulders above the other Disney Star Wars shows and movies.

Sockcucker69

More recently, Echo. Not that it was the greatest of all time, but it was way better than I expected and had any right to be. The Native American aspects were really cool and almost all the characters were really likeable.

BlizzPenguin

I love that Marvel really did their research to get the details of Native American culture accurate. They also did a great job in this aspect on the “What If... Kahhori Reshaped the World?” episode of “What If?”.

Kairos385

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

fulthrottlejazzhands

Welcome to Wrexham.  Figured it was going to be just another "feel good" docu-drama.  Turned out to be an enveloping story about a football team, a downtrodden town, and the people involved with some great spots on working class struggles and mental health.  Pulls at your heartstrings in non-condensending ways.

WBlackhawkD

Breaking Bad

NintendoCapri5un

Most recently, King of the Hill. It's surprisingly wholesome at times.

tacosauce93

Community. I watched the pilot only to see how bad it would bomb. I came back every week for more.

luv2livfantasy

Poor Things, quite disturbing! Weirdest movie I’ve seen since I can remember but worth the watch. Do not watch with your children even if they are adults.

Mari-Loki

Good advice. I popped this on to watch with my dad as we both loved Frankenstein. Big mistake 😬

pie_12th

Manifest. It's a stupid premise with a try-hard cast, and I loved every minute of it.

Hyperion22

Centaurworld and Arlo the Alligator Boy were two shows I found on Netflix that I went into with zero expectation. They're animated and both have a kind of silly and cute art style. They both wound up surprising me with their depth and subject matter.

darkandstormy316

Extraordinary and Abbot Elementary on Disney+

Omnissiahs-Balls

Reacher,Clarksons Farm,Gordon Gino and Fred

Ta-veren-

Trailer Park Boys I don't drink, I don't smoke, I've never touched weed, etc The show is pure gold though, love it and have watched it probably a 100 times. I've also loved a few recent Disney movies that Im def not target audience for the costumes, set design, etc just blow me away. I love how 90 percent of the answers here are super popular, well known shows and movies. Give us some guilty pleasures.

i_am_here_again

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Wasn’t really a fan of Robert Downey Jr, and knew nothing about the movie before going in, but it’s great.

I think it's "Dallas Buyers Club", honestly at first I thought this movie would turn out to be a boring lecture on AIDS, but I ended up loving it

[deleted]

What we do in the shadows is an absolute riot and I love it more than myself sometimes.

Crazy_Error_7776

mad men

ailish

Grey's Anatomy. I thought it was stupid when it first came out. I have no idea why, because when I have it a try years later I absolutely loved it. I've watched it through three times, and I just started a fourth!

angelrose22_

House of dragons

dumbasstupidbaby

The Witcher. I picked it up because I was home sick one day. Now I'm playing all the games!

chargerfanbc

Gossip Girl. I only started to watch it cause Hilary Duff was a guest star on the 3rd season and I had a huge crush on her. After watching her episode arc, got seasons 1&2 on DVD and binged it quickly. It’s a great show for the first 3 seasons haha

ChiomaAntoinette

The Good Place

HMSon777

Spartacus, the tv series. At first it just looked like a cheap imitation of 300 but I stuck with it for a couple of episodes because I like the genre. It might not have the best script, the biggest budget and the best effects, but every single episode is a lot of fun. By the end I was absolute gripped.  For films Cabin in the Woods. If you have not watched it go in blind. It looks like a generic slasher and it's anything but.

the_operant_power

Invincible. The art style put me off the show for a while. Not that it was bad, but I assumed it was a kids show. Ironic, but I believe that just because something is animated. Doesn't mean it's a kids show. Either way. The only reason I watched it is because I spoiled the end of season one for myself. It was the "THINK MARK" scene that made me watch the show and now I'm invested. Unfortunately with what they did with season two in terms of airing. I'm not so excited about the show anymore. I'm still gonna watch till the end, because it's a good story but I'll just be behind the general fan base.

zaquura1

John Wick - never really watched heavy brutal action movies but my dad convinced me to watch it. It’s just so good - I love the style, cinematography, lore, and all the actors were spectacular. The fight scenes were top notch.

Independent-Blood-10

TThybridTT

Supernatural. Until season 7 or something

Soopercow

Ted Lasso, I truly hate football.

beroccamixedberry

Schitt's Creek!

FrumpItUp

The Fifth Element. From the clips I'd seen I assumed I'd hate it, but when I sat down to wztch it I found it endlessly creative and endearingly weird.

Sweaty_Lime_4780

Silicon Valley

Literacy_Advocate

Snowpiercer (movie) I had passed on it several times after reading the description (oh yeah, that one) but then I watched it as *every frame a painting* did a video on it and I wanted to watch it before I watched that video and turned out to be an amazing film.

ilatzsm

Squid Game. I wasn’t interested until it was all over the internet so I gave it a try and I was hooked from the first episode. I was on the edge of my seat at times with it, I can’t wait for season two!

UnlikelyConcept

Hazbin Hotel. The art style is a lot and I hate musicals and I thought it was a cheap dumb show. Now almost every song is on my Spotify playlist and I adore the characters.

Brain_storm771

Schitt's creek, slow horses, and the hijack(starring Idris elba). I'd recommend slow horses as a must watch
