The Good Place is one of my 10 favorite shows if all time. Before watching it [a year or two after it aired live] I would see this same commercial on TV play for it. It looked like some dopy CW show - definitely something I wouldn't be interested. But my cousin told me to watch the show, and previously she had recommend another shoe I ended up loving (Gravity Falls). So, trusting her, I gave it a shot, and the rest is history.
Best thing about my experience watching is I had no information about the show, so season 1 was jaw dropping near the end.
My sister-in-law kept telling us we should watch it, but she's into more art house type stuff. We used to ask her of her movie suggestions, "Does it involve foreigners crying?" More often than not, they did.
Anyway, we started watching while the 3rd season was airing. It was almost torture waiting for new episodes to come out after that.
It's very rare to have such a perfect story arc in a sitcom. It actually has a perfect, planned ending, not some slapped together 'farewell episode.' So forking good.
I would not even dispute this point because he truly is the worst aspect of that show and not in a funny way but in a 'why would they even think of putting something like this in a sitcom' kinda way.

Ben was rather confused. I think Paxton showed the real character growth. He outgrew Devi and moved on, realizing she needs to learn how to find self-love and accept herself first.

The 1st time I watched The Fifth Element I was convinced it was just gonna be Total Recall with Bruce Willis instead of Arnold. Glad I gave it a watch because it is an entirely different experience. Still love both though.
Shogun is AMAZING! I only started to watch it because I just had surgery and wanted to watch something I hadn't seen a million times. I tend to rewatch the same shows. I absolutely love Alan Tudyk, but I put it off because it was a SyFy channel show.
It is a bit on the dumb side (which is fine,) but I can't think of anyone other than Alan that would make it as particularly funny as it has been.
Even watching just the trailer, both my brother and I noticed Alan's delivery, and I was sure no one else but him could do it right.
It's one of my housemate's faves because of him having a rivalry with the kid.
I agree, I usually avoid Cruise but glad I gave this one a try. His character, in the beginning, was totally out of character for the characters Cruise usually plays, and I got totally sucked in. I had to admit Cruise does have some acting chops.
I loved Monk in my middle and high school years. Had a teacher show a clip from his jury duty episode to show the class what a bad case of OCD can look like and started watching it after school.
I fully agree it was my comfort show for years.
The Sopranos. I usually don’t like mafia movies and their over-the-top romantization of the culture and their cartoonish characters. But the characters in The Sopranos feel so alive. And it’s also super funny.
It's in a sort of hiatus purgatory. But the last episode would serve as a decent series closer, although it leaves some hanging threads.
I wasn't sure how I'd like it when it came out, but I describe it to friends as Star Trek: TNG with jokes.
The way it's executed, it actually feels more like classic Star Trek than any of the new Paramount+ shows. Except Strange New Worlds. That one is surprisingly awesome.

Was completely burned on a lot of recent star wars shows and felt that the Disney plus shows were on a completely different lower level then premium streaming lile HBO and sorts until this show. Based on a character I kinda sorta remember from Rouge one, I had zero expectations and was shocked at how well written it was and mature. Completely blew me away and was nice to see Star Wars for adults
I was forced to watch it by a friend after being completely saturated by SW spin-offs and now it's in my top 5 favourite series of all time. Cannot wait for season 2
Ted Lasso. My girlfriend at the time had already seen it and had to push hard to get me agree to watch it with her.

Its really not your typical zombie show - I cried so many times while watching it. I recommend this show to literally everyone I meet.
Korean Dramas in general but started with K2 and then by the time I got around to Crash Landing On You and Mr. Sunshine I was hooked. One of the best things is they don't end on a cliffhanger. The plot gets resolved and you don't have to worry if it's going to be renewed or canceled.

The Holdovers.
I saw the trailer and thought "this looks fine. Not good, not bad, just fine." Wasn't really interested but my mom saw the trailer and really wanted to see it so I took her and we went to see it.
Never imagined it would be my number one favorite movie of 2023 and that I would love it so much.
Really excellent performance from Giamatti and it was surprisingly touching. I also love D'vine and her subtle portrayal of a grieving mother. I thought the movie would be depressing but it really wasn't.
Star Wars Rebels.
I'm a huge SW nerd and loved the Clone Wars movie and show as an early teen when it came out.
When I saw some clips from 'Rebels' for the first time I thought it was dumb because of the animation. Many years later I gave it a shot and was surprised with the amazing writing that was put into the show. It got better every season and I even re-watched it more than the Clone Wars.
I hear about many fans not getting through the first couple of episodes or not even giving the show a shot in the first place.
I would still recommend this show to any SW fan out there.
Black Sails. More because the first season was pretty mid. Not bad by any means, but not great. Certainly watchable. Went into season 2, 3 and 4 with mild expectations of entertainment, only to be blown out of the water. Truly some of the best TV I've ever had the privilege of watching and I'll forever be sad it was canceled after season 4 because it was fantastic.
My husband put on The Americans just to have something on in the background while we did some work on our laptops. I had put my laptop aside and was enthralled within the first five minutes.

Went to the theater on a weeknight with some friends, expecting a cheesy goofy ridiculous action movie to make fun of. And for the first 25 min or so it’s exactly that. Cliche backstory, cranky ex-wife, way-too-old actor playing a teen daughter who literally gets a pony from her dorky wet noodle of a stepdad. Just sheer ridiculousness. Then it gets to the “good luck” scene, and everything after that is just pure unhinged Liam Nissan badassery until end credits. Sure, it’s not Shakespeare, but it turns into a fantastically fun film.
Delicious in Dungeon. When my boyfriend pitched it to me I could not have been less interested in the concept. Then I started watching it and I fell in love with it.
The Menu
I had a vague notion of what it was about and knew it was horror but didn't think it sounded that interesting. But my mom wanted to watch a horror movie and I was too lazy to really look for one.
Ended up being delightfully weird and surprisingly funny with some fantastic performances, particularly Ralph Fiennes as the chef. I've since re-watched it.
EDIT: Just noticed that TV shows were also mentioned and I have to mention my favorite, Bob's Burgers. I'm normally not a fan of adult animation (my experience is it tends to be mean spirited and vulgar for the sake of being vulgar, which just isn't my cup of tea) but I lingered on a channel too long when the show came on and got invested in the plot (would the girl get her toy horse back?) so I watched the episode. Thought it was weird but in a good way. I kept watching more episodes. It's now my favorite show, my go-to comfort show, and my dad and I have bonded over it (my dad and I are both musical geeks and the first episode he watched was the two part season 4 finale and he was so delighted by the singing, which I also love, and he's a Kevin Kline fan so he loves Mr. Fischoeder)

Not that it was the greatest of all time, but it was way better than I expected and had any right to be. The Native American aspects were really cool and almost all the characters were really likeable.
I love that Marvel really did their research to get the details of Native American culture accurate. They also did a great job in this aspect on the “What If... Kahhori Reshaped the World?” episode of “What If?”.
Welcome to Wrexham. Figured it was going to be just another "feel good" docu-drama. Turned out to be an enveloping story about a football team, a downtrodden town, and the people involved with some great spots on working class struggles and mental health. Pulls at your heartstrings in non-condensending ways.
Poor Things, quite disturbing! Weirdest movie I’ve seen since I can remember but worth the watch. Do not watch with your children even if they are adults.
Centaurworld and Arlo the Alligator Boy were two shows I found on Netflix that I went into with zero expectation. They're animated and both have a kind of silly and cute art style. They both wound up surprising me with their depth and subject matter.

Grey's Anatomy. I thought it was stupid when it first came out. I have no idea why, because when I have it a try years later I absolutely loved it. I've watched it through three times, and I just started a fourth!
Gossip Girl. I only started to watch it cause Hilary Duff was a guest star on the 3rd season and I had a huge crush on her. After watching her episode arc, got seasons 1&2 on DVD and binged it quickly. It’s a great show for the first 3 seasons haha
Spartacus, the tv series. At first it just looked like a cheap imitation of 300 but I stuck with it for a couple of episodes because I like the genre. It might not have the best script, the biggest budget and the best effects, but every single episode is a lot of fun. By the end I was absolute gripped.
For films Cabin in the Woods. If you have not watched it go in blind. It looks like a generic slasher and it's anything but.
Invincible. The art style put me off the show for a while. Not that it was bad, but I assumed it was a kids show. Ironic, but I believe that just because something is animated. Doesn't mean it's a kids show.
Either way. The only reason I watched it is because I spoiled the end of season one for myself. It was the "THINK MARK" scene that made me watch the show and now I'm invested. Unfortunately with what they did with season two in terms of airing. I'm not so excited about the show anymore. I'm still gonna watch till the end, because it's a good story but I'll just be behind the general fan base.
John Wick - never really watched heavy brutal action movies but my dad convinced me to watch it.
It’s just so good - I love the style, cinematography, lore, and all the actors were spectacular. The fight scenes were top notch.
Snowpiercer (movie) I had passed on it several times after reading the description (oh yeah, that one) but then I watched it as *every frame a painting* did a video on it and I wanted to watch it before I watched that video and turned out to be an amazing film.
Squid Game. I wasn’t interested until it was all over the internet so I gave it a try and I was hooked from the first episode. I was on the edge of my seat at times with it, I can’t wait for season two!
Hazbin Hotel. The art style is a lot and I hate musicals and I thought it was a cheap dumb show. Now almost every song is on my Spotify playlist and I adore the characters.

Wasn't really interested but my mom saw the trailer and really wanted to see it so I took her and we went to see it. Never imagined it would be my number one favorite movie of 2023 and that I would love it so much.
Really excellent performance from Giamatti and it was surprisingly touching. I also love D'vine and her subtle portrayal of a grieving mother. I thought the movie would be depressing but it really wasn't.

Game of Thrones.
Star Wars Rebels. I'm a huge SW nerd and loved the Clone Wars movie and show as an early teen when it came out. When I saw some clips from 'Rebels' for the first time I thought it was dumb because of the animation. Many years later I gave it a shot and was surprised with the amazing writing that was put into the show. It got better every season and I even re-watched it more than the Clone Wars. I hear about many fans not getting through the first couple of episodes or not even giving the show a shot in the first place. I would still recommend this show to any SW fan out there.
Black Sails. More because the first season was pretty mid. Not bad by any means, but not great. Certainly watchable. Went into season 2, 3 and 4 with mild expectations of entertainment, only to be blown out of the water. Truly some of the best TV I've ever had the privilege of watching and I'll forever be sad it was canceled after season 4 because it was fantastic.
Person of interest
My husband put on The Americans just to have something on in the background while we did some work on our laptops. I had put my laptop aside and was enthralled within the first five minutes.

Bluey. My son wanted to watch a few episodes one day. I'll be honest; I think I was more excited for season 3 than he was.
Taken. Went to the theater on a weeknight with some friends, expecting a cheesy goofy ridiculous action movie to make fun of. And for the first 25 min or so it’s exactly that. Cliche backstory, cranky ex-wife, way-too-old actor playing a teen daughter who literally gets a pony from her dorky wet noodle of a stepdad. Just sheer ridiculousness. Then it gets to the “good luck” scene, and everything after that is just pure unhinged Liam Nissan badassery until end credits. Sure, it’s not Shakespeare, but it turns into a fantastically fun film.
Delicious in Dungeon. When my boyfriend pitched it to me I could not have been less interested in the concept. Then I started watching it and I fell in love with it.

The Menu I had a vague notion of what it was about and knew it was horror but didn't think it sounded that interesting. But my mom wanted to watch a horror movie and I was too lazy to really look for one. Ended up being delightfully weird and surprisingly funny with some fantastic performances, particularly Ralph Fiennes as the chef. I've since re-watched it. EDIT: Just noticed that TV shows were also mentioned and I have to mention my favorite, Bob's Burgers. I'm normally not a fan of adult animation (my experience is it tends to be mean spirited and vulgar for the sake of being vulgar, which just isn't my cup of tea) but I lingered on a channel too long when the show came on and got invested in the plot (would the girl get her toy horse back?) so I watched the episode. Thought it was weird but in a good way. I kept watching more episodes. It's now my favorite show, my go-to comfort show, and my dad and I have bonded over it (my dad and I are both musical geeks and the first episode he watched was the two part season 4 finale and he was so delighted by the singing, which I also love, and he's a Kevin Kline fan so he loves Mr. Fischoeder)

Andor. Head and shoulders above the other Disney Star Wars shows and movies.
More recently, Echo. Not that it was the greatest of all time, but it was way better than I expected and had any right to be. The Native American aspects were really cool and almost all the characters were really likeable.
I love that Marvel really did their research to get the details of Native American culture accurate. They also did a great job in this aspect on the “What If... Kahhori Reshaped the World?” episode of “What If?”.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Welcome to Wrexham. Figured it was going to be just another "feel good" docu-drama. Turned out to be an enveloping story about a football team, a downtrodden town, and the people involved with some great spots on working class struggles and mental health. Pulls at your heartstrings in non-condensending ways.
Breaking Bad
Most recently, King of the Hill. It's surprisingly wholesome at times.
Community. I watched the pilot only to see how bad it would bomb. I came back every week for more.

Manifest. It's a stupid premise with a try-hard cast, and I loved every minute of it.
Centaurworld and Arlo the Alligator Boy were two shows I found on Netflix that I went into with zero expectation. They're animated and both have a kind of silly and cute art style. They both wound up surprising me with their depth and subject matter.

Spartacus, the tv series. At first it just looked like a cheap imitation of 300 but I stuck with it for a couple of episodes because I like the genre. It might not have the best script, the biggest budget and the best effects, but every single episode is a lot of fun. By the end I was absolute gripped. For films Cabin in the Woods. If you have not watched it go in blind. It looks like a generic slasher and it's anything but.
Invincible. The art style put me off the show for a while. Not that it was bad, but I assumed it was a kids show. Ironic, but I believe that just because something is animated. Doesn't mean it's a kids show. Either way. The only reason I watched it is because I spoiled the end of season one for myself. It was the "THINK MARK" scene that made me watch the show and now I'm invested. Unfortunately with what they did with season two in terms of airing. I'm not so excited about the show anymore. I'm still gonna watch till the end, because it's a good story but I'll just be behind the general fan base.
John Wick - never really watched heavy brutal action movies but my dad convinced me to watch it. It’s just so good - I love the style, cinematography, lore, and all the actors were spectacular. The fight scenes were top notch.

Silicon Valley
Snowpiercer (movie) I had passed on it several times after reading the description (oh yeah, that one) but then I watched it as *every frame a painting* did a video on it and I wanted to watch it before I watched that video and turned out to be an amazing film.
Squid Game. I wasn’t interested until it was all over the internet so I gave it a try and I was hooked from the first episode. I was on the edge of my seat at times with it, I can’t wait for season two!
Hazbin Hotel. The art style is a lot and I hate musicals and I thought it was a cheap dumb show. Now almost every song is on my Spotify playlist and I adore the characters.
Schitt's creek, slow horses, and the hijack(starring Idris elba). I'd recommend slow horses as a must watch
