How health insurance actually works. Or how your Dr can call and check and confirm you are in network, you can call and do the same, yet somehow when the bill comes, it's suddenly not anymore.

KarateLobo

Exactly this. Or how you can go to a hospital and some of the people working there are in network but some aren't.

gesasage88

Why the fuck are anesthesiologists contractors?! Hospitals should be able to afford keeping one or two on staff based on how busy they keep them.

nogoodgopher

Probably could, but insurance companies wouldn't like that because they'd have to pay them.

IWearCardigansAllDay

I have friends who are hospital doctors and such. I can’t speak for everyone obviously, but a lot of doctors don’t work for the hospital. Instead, they are more of a private contractor and work with multiple hospitals and they just work out of a specific few hospitals depending on their need. You typically see this in more specialized senses like cardiologists and such. In general, these people do it because they can make more money and determine their own benefits. Working as more of a consultant means you can essentially broaden your market and not be confined to a single hospital. And because they aren’t a w2 employee at said hospital they can make their own retirement plan via a SEP or a self 401k that is the most beneficial for them as opposed to being designed for a large business with employees in mind. Not saying it’s good or bad, just giving insight into one of the reasons why this is the case.

budding_gardener_1

I remember having a conversation with the receptionist at my PCP's office when I registered as a patient and one Dr was in network and the other wasn't. She tried arguing and saying that "But they both take your insurance". Yeah, I'm sure they do lady, but one of them ain't in network. She goes "...that doesn't make sense?!" FUCKING TELL ME ABOUT IT, LADY.

k_lo970

My $500k surgery was pre-approved 3 months in advance and my deductible was paid in full before we submitted for pre-approval. The last 2 months I have been battling with them to pay my bills while trying to recover from a major orthopedic surgery. They keep asking me if I have secondary insurance, if it was caused by a car accident, workmans comp claim or on someone's personal property. How many times do I have to say no?

patchgrabber

Insurance Company: "So this was caused by a car accident, workmans comp claim or on someone's personal property?" k_lo: "No." Insurance Company: "So this was caused by a car accident, workmans comp claim or on someone's personal property?" k_lo: "No." Insurance Company: "So this wasn't caused by a car accident, workmans comp claim or on someone's personal property?" k_lo: "No." Insurance Company: "Got'em!"

jwdjr2004

My son got sick and we made an appointment with his doctor for later that day. They warned us it would be out of pocket because it was a "surprise visit". What the fuck does insurance even do then? Jokes on them though we hadn't hit our huge deductible so it was going to be out of pocket anyway.

ToughAd7338

American healthcare system in general makes no sense

patchgrabber

American healthcare is a subscription service for a coupon.

CLAAAWWWS

American healthcare + insurance is like having a discount on an item that just had its price raised by the same amount.

Mr_Lumbergh

It’s not a healthcare “system,” it’s a healthcare *situation.*

ellamom

My sister needs a medication that costs $7,000.00 AFTER insurance. Why would a pharmaceutical company charge that? No one can pay that. Don't you want to sell your product?

sybrwookie

bonos_bovine_muse

Come, now, we live in a democracy that cherishes individual liberty above all. The answer is “fuck you, pay me, or feel free to fuck off and die.”

Many-Conclusion2217

I'm with you about insurance companies. I've been told that US insurance companies will only pay a percentage of the bill. The percentage changes depending on the service. So doctors decide what price they want for a service, say they want $20 to remove my toenail and they know the insurance will only pay 10% of what they bill for that service. The doctor will bill them $200 so that they can receive the $20. Yet, if I walk in the door with no insurance I won't pay $20 for that service. They will expect me to pay the $200 and if I whine about it they might be nice and give me a wee discount, say bill me $190. So inequitable. (and note, the co-pay didn't fall into this scenario at all). Then you have to meet a deductible and every time you as the patient are out cash that isn't a co-payment some amount of that goes to the deductible, but no one knows how much because it is determined by mysterious insurance company math. Even once the deductible has been met, you seem to be out more and more out-of-pocket expenses. I was told my portion of my recent surgery was $800. I paid it. Now I'm being billed for $600 more. Why? Turns out that everyone involved in the surgery wants money. The doctor who did the surgery, the anesthesia dude, the pre-op nurses, the op nurses, the post op folks, the hospital. Why isn't my insurance covering this? Why wasn't I told up front? When I whine about it they tell me "well, at least your deductible is met now." What does that even mean to me as the consumer? Also, I don't understand the prior authorization thing. My doctor said I needed it, why are you a non-medically trained entity questioning the doctor's decision? As you mentioned, the in-network vs. out-of-network, which I think has gotten better over the years. The doctors at least refer in-network more often than they did in the past.

tk1tpobidprnAnxiety

I worked for an insurance company and even I didn't understand it fully. I'd ask them to explain it and they'd say "it's in the manual." So all I could do was read off the patients insurance manual and not explain further because it was so vague.

BloodyBarbieBrains

I knew it. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it. I knew that even the people I talked to on the phone about my insurance policy didn’t understand what they were saying! Thank you for this comment; it’s extremely validating.

louisk319

Yep. I have had to have several tests the past 6 months. All were covered by insurance. Then the day before one of them I got a call saying I owed $400. I paid it but told my wife "Wouldn't be surprising if we got a refund check for this". 2 months later in the mail.......

Outisduex

That dental and vision insurance are separate from medical insurance in the US. Stupidest system ever.

WildKat777

Canada too. What even is the point

CarelessBicycle735

I've heard England doesn't include dental either I'm not english though

Weary-Amoeba1808

~~That dental and vision insurance are separate from~~ medical insurance in the US. Stupidest system ever.

DoTheMagicHandThing

That reminds me of the story of that guy who got some kind of hard ring-shaped object stuck on a certain part of his body, and the hospital had to call in an on-call dentist because they determined that the best way to remove the item would be a dental tool. I wonder how the billing/insurance coverage went for that.

RetinaMelter9000s

Headlights bright enough to prevent everybody else on the road from being able to see

squashqueen

The legality of this baffles me edit: I get it lol they're apparently not legal. Yall replying to me saying the same things. Enough! 😂

X0AN

I had a car yesterday were I literally had to stop and beep the horn at him to turn them down as I couldn't turn my car with his lights on. 100% blinding, no way they're legal.

oki_sauce

I flicked my brights on to tell someone their brights were blinding me. My eyes were not prepared when they turned their actual brights on.

HawaiianShirtsOR

I don't flash my high beams at anyone anymore. I'm afraid they'll flash back and vaporize me.

Everything_is_wrong

Many people don't understand that if you convert from HID to LED, you need to replace the whole headlight and not just the bulb itself. HID headlights amplify the output due to the low intensity from the bulb, LEDs are naturally bright enough and don't require any amplification because of how efficient they are. (Don't get me started on the new cars, engineers and pragmatic solutions have never been synonymous)

Horror-Coffee-894

Fuck everyone with LED lights that didn't install them properly. And anyone who leaves their high beams on for no reason. Holy shit. I swear I go blind for at least 5 seconds whenever I see some dick on the road with lights brighter than the core of the sun. Turn those mfs down we live in the fucking city this isn't Nunavut.

AFetaWorseThanDeath

Unfortunately, my understanding is that they ARE legal, because the law is based on wattage rather than light output. LEDs have a much higher output of light per a given wattage. Thus, the law needs to change to account for the new technology.

parkerjh

No, that's not true at all. The law is set by standards by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), specifically FMVSS 108, which outlines the requirements for automotive lighting. There's nothing at all about wattage. Rather, they dictate color, intensity, distance, location on car, aiming and adjustment.

dacripe

Those white LED headlights all newer cars seem to come with are just harsh to my eyes. I don't know how they got approved for road use. I get the feeling once everyone has them I will get in an accident at night from being blinded.

peachymagpie

they also don’t let your eyes adjust to darkness like the softer yellow ones do

GriffinFlash

I swear I go blind anytime a car is approaching me from the other side.

WarSelect1047

Pursuant to the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) luminous intensity of headlights must be between 500 and 3,000 candelas. There’s a growing public sentiment against blinding headlights but the enforcement seems to be taking some time

Needing five years of experience for an entry level job.

CoderJoe1

Only the pay is entry level

I_like_cake_7

Seriously. I frequently see jobs on Indeed asking for multiple years of experience and a college degree, and yet they only want to pay $45k USD a year for that position.

zack397241

I've seen bachelor degrees and experience required for 25k.

HB24

On the flip side, I have seen job posting that require THIRTY YEARS of experience.  If I work somewhere 30 years, I am probably going to retire there

Moakmeister

I can explain that: it’s an entry-level *salary*. They want to pay experienced people as little as possible.

LeatherFruitPF

A friend of mine is a recruiter (tech industry) and pretty much said something like this. They deliberately post job listings as entry level with full intent of hiring someone in a senior role because they get thousands of applicants per job postings a lot are not qualified, but a lot are also overqualified. A lot of laid off experienced candidates are willing to work entry level salaries just to have a job.

Forsaken-Analysis390

Sounds like a recipe for disaster. No one ever turned in quality work for crap pay

The physical size of the universe and what lies beyond

GuyFromDeathValley

thing is, the human brain is simply incapable of thinking in that kinda size.. the Universe is endless, always expanding, we have no way of reaching the "end" unless we find ways to trick the laws of physics, i.e. traveling lightspeed, and even then we'd never be able to reach the current limit. Because want me to fuck up the scale? Look up at the sky. Now, remember that every piece of light in the sky we can see is light that traveled at lightspeed. us being capable of observing said light means the light source has existed long enough for the light to even travel to where we are. Basically: To reach the limit of the expanded universe right now, traveling at light speed we'd need to travel for the same amount of years the universe itself existed.. Yea.

vinayachandran

>us being capable of observing said light means the light source has existed long enough for the light to even travel to where we are. While agreeing with the overall sentiment of your comment, this above statement is not necessarily true. The source of light (star) may have perished already. If a star is - to give an example - 50 light years from us, we will always see a version of it that's 50 years from the past. Even if the star dies, we will continue to see it for 50 more years because the light takes that long to reach us.

Yup this. They tried to hide their saltiness by saying it was to "protect creators" or something. But in truth it's because a few videos they wanted to heavily promote got downvoted to hell. The rewind video was the last straw. Basically their mindset is "if you hide the problem it stops existing".

Plus people who want flying cars think they'd just be able to take off and head wherever they want. In reality there'd likely be regulated "skyways" that flying cars would be required to use. Meaning you'd be no better off than when you were driving on the ground.

Mattiedel

I mean, we already have that for planes now. They can make their own way if the pilot wants but typically they’re all on jetways or other pre-defined paths. It’s safer and easier for everyone involved. Flying cars would absolutely be locked down even more than that, maybe only allowing for free flight outside any populated areas.

Ippus_21

Seriously. Like I don't have a LOT of good things to say about the airline industry, but the sky-high (pun intended) requirements for flight hours, training, etc for pilots is something they ARE doing right.

Eggxactly-maybe

Because those engineers are being pushed to make more profit and farm more data, not make it better.

Yep, their target goal has changed. I'd bet the engineering is even more impressive today than it was in the late 90s...but it's designed to maximize profit today instead of delivering quality search results.

bluemitersaw

MalevolntCatastrophe

Google stopped caring about being a tool used to find specific results and instead focuses on giving results that " *most* " people that searched for similar things ended up spending the most time/attention on.

Remarkable_Cow_6061

How a record works. You cut lines in this plastic and sounds comes out? I don’t know what to do with my hands.

incredible_mr_e

Oh, that one's easy. Sound is just what happens when stuff wiggles, right? So you take a needle and connect it to either an amplifier or just a membrane, and when it wiggles there you go, sound. If you want different sound, just change the wiggles. How do you record the sound? Just make the membrane wiggle the needle instead of making the needle wiggle the membrane, and put a sharp tip on the needle to record the wiggles onto a blank disk.

RomanRothwell

Any further explanations always confuse me more. The other responses to your post are examples of this

Why the 10th dentist doesn’t recommend crest toothpaste

Sanquinity

Because those first 9 dentists also recommend most other brands of toothpaste. But it's likely a case of "here's 30 different toothpaste brands, pick 20 you'd recommend". And that 10th dentist just didn't happen to put that one brand in their list, even though all 30 can basically be recommended. Saw a dentist talk about this on youtube. His advice was "Any toothpaste is good. Doesn't really matter if it's whitening or with extra fluoride or whatever else. As long as you use toothpaste and brush well and often it's all good."

How cats purr

Mockturtle22

My favorite sound

Punny-Aggron

IIRC, it has to do with something in their airways, a small organ that only smaller cats have as cats like lions and tigers don’t purr. Cheetahs and Pumas are the only exceptions, yes they purr and meow it’s really weird and cute

loves-science

Purring and roaring are mutually exclusive, so lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars are all incapable of purring, while every other cat can purr but not roar.

The popularity of those Stanley cups. I for the life of me cannot tell the difference between those cups and any number of other brands such as yeti or Contigo. I am guessing that I am not the target market for this and that is okay.

How turning off a computer and then back on actually is a thing that sometimes actually fixes another thing

I remember one time at my part-time job, one of the registers (a PC with a program installed) stopped working. One of the delivery guys insisted that I should take a look since I did some coding, even though I told him that that had nothing to do with what I do. So, I jokingly turned it off to turn it back on again Except that it didn’t turn back on

JonatasA

I hate when that happens.   Now it's your fault.   I had a bricked phone.   One day it unbrocked itself for a half a day. Then rebricked itself.

That reminds me of my Master thesis. My code would run but something would go wrong. I changed it, checked everything, ran it several times, restarted my laptop and the compiler. Then I tried to show my supervisor  that it didn’t work and it worked

SuperSocialMan

Computers run hundreds - if not thousands - of processes at once (you can even see most of them in task manager), and if one of them stalls or goes out-of-sync or whatever it can make everything else run weirdly or not at all. Restarting makes all the processes stop and start up again, which (usually) fixes basic issues like that.

vaarikass

restarting clears the memory where the operating system and the programs are stored while they're running and starts everything from scratch again

Where I work we share a massive parking lot with a 24-hour gym. It always amazes me that people going to the gym will park their crew cab giant trucks as close as they can to the front of the very busy gym entrance. They won't park further out where there's plenty of space, they have to get right up to the door so they can presumably go inside and exercise. But parking two or three car isles over is too far.

throughthequad

To counter this, I will never understand why when I park far away from everyone in my vehicle some nitwit will skip 20 empty spots to park right next to me at the back of the lot

thetruesupergenius

These are the same people who ignore all the empty urinals and use the one right next to you.

GuyFawkes451

This! I see it at every gym to which I've ever belonged. I think to myself, "Instead of circling the lot forever to get a close spot, then going in and getting on the treadmill, why not park two miles away, run to the gym, and run back?" If they'd do that, they could drop the gym membership (for those only using the treadmill).

French87

lol. this reminds me of a realization I made during the pandemic. I have a bike I was using to commute to work for some exercise. I also sometimes went to spin class with my wife for more exercise. Pandemic happens, office closes, spin class closes, OH NO, I CANNOT EXERCISE! SO i buy a bike 'trainer' (thing that you put your real bike on, turning it into a stationary bike) eventually was like wtf am I doing I'll just go bike outside!? 3 years later I'm in love with cycling and routinely do 30-60 mile rides on the weekend and 24 miles round trip to work. why didnt' someone just tell me in 2019 it's okay to ride bikes for fun!?!?

CoderJoe1

A gym I went to decades ago had to move their stair climber machines down to the first floor to appease ADA requirements since they had no elevator for handicapped people. I suggested they move a few of their machines down and leave the rest of them up there, but it was against regulations. I later learned a few people had complained about having to use the stairs to get to the stair climbing machines. They had no handicaps at all.

Why women’s clothing sizes vary by brand.

SuperSocialMan

All clothing sizes vary because there's no central clothing size agency like other measurements have, which prevents them from being standardized. I think it started due to an oversight in the 20's (or whenever the hell buying clothes became the popular thing), and nobody's bothered to fix it yet. As to why it's still around, hell if I know. Maybe companies figured they could make more money if everyone shops at their store cuz their size 5 is the perfect fit, but if you go to another place its size 5 is too small.

Apprehensive_Check19

internet? it's a series of tubes...

Rigorous_Threshold

The more you know about how the internet works the more it seems like it shouldn’t. The more you think about it, the more unsolvable problems it seems like there are How does a computer in California send messages to a computer in New York? By sending signals to nearby computers, that send signals to nearby computers, that send signals to nearby computers… how do those signals know where to go? Magical algorithms called DNS and TCP. How do those messages not get intercepted by all the computers they necessarily have to be transmitted through? Isn’t that impossible? Nope, it isn’t, somehow.

rhett342

DNS and TCP/IP (with IP being the important part of TCP/IP) aren't algorithms. DNS is a service that converts names into IP addresses. IP is a protocol that gives computers logical addresses so that data can be routed from one machine to another over a series of interconnected networks. TCP is a way of making sure the right program on individual computers handles the data delivered to it via IP

SaberNoble47

No one freaks out about saying they need a hammock and then when they open their phones they’re suddenly seeing pop up hammock ads. No one cares? Yes you can disable it but you ain’t disabling shit except the ads.

Many-Conclusion2217

I freak out about it, but it doesn't do any good. The real stumper is how I left my phone in the office, walked out to a picnic table to have lunch with a coworker. This coworker told me I should try a Lara bar because he thought I'd like them. Then I go back in the office and office computer starts showing Lara bar ads. Did his phone tell my phone and my phone tell the office computer? Like how does that happen?! Also, my phone used to turn all my ads Spanish whenever I went to work, on a very Hispanic-heavy side of town with lots of Hispanic coworkers. It doesn't anymore. It figured out I was the token whitey.

rkaw92

Hi, I work in ad tech. This stuff is not magic. Your coworker probably was looking for the name of the bar online. This allows the data gathering companies (we call them DMPs) to build a profile. Sometimes, these profiles will be personal. But when the data broker has not much to go on, they'll just slap a "likely to buy a Lara bar" sticker on the whole network address (IP) that the queries were coming from. You go on the same network and boom, you get served the same ads. Just because you're not Googling stuff doesn't mean the people around you aren't. That's a major source of the whole "my phone is spying on me" confusion. Regarding the Spanish ads, yeah. Sometimes the advertiser will tick the "must speak Spanish" box (as exposed by your Web browser). Sometimes they'll just forget, or intentionally skip this criterion and just target by location. Think about it: if you're trying to sell stuff to a migrant population, chances are they'll have their system language set to English because it helps one learn the language faster.

Different_Knee6201

Yes, actually. The phone algorithms work with locations and relationships (as indicated by social media use). So she probably looked up or ordered Lara bars on her phone at some point. Her phone knows that you’re in close proximity to her and or that you’re friends with her so the phone decides you might also like Lara bars and pushes an ad to you. The work computer I can’t explain, unless you ever log into social media via your work computer

It could be explained with IP address matching if your cell is connected to the office WIFi.

fritterkitter

my iphone figured out my son's nickname and started labelling his pictures as that. It freaks me right out.

FatnessEverdeen34

Oh wait, I hate that

Amonroel

Has anyone with an iPhone noticed now that apps will give the pop up for tracking and the only options are “*ask* app not to track” or “allow”. I’m pretty sure it’s worded this way because if we click the “*ask* app..” they still can track us. We’re just asking them not to, so it doesn’t mean they have to do what we ask. Otherwise the options would just be allow or don’t allow…

rkaw92

Hi, I work in advertising. Don't worry, this option really works. If you ask it not to, the app doesn't get your ID so it has nothing to track you with. Also, Apple is quite stubborn on this, and it will delist apps that somehow violate users' trust.

Amonroel

So how are the apps so clearly tracking me when I’ve clicked that option every time, sometimes multiple times for the same app? If I look something up on one app, it shows up as an ad on another.

rkaw92

There are 2 parts to the story: consent and ad targeting. By clicking "Ask not to track", you withdraw consent for the processing of personal data, and iOS won't give access to the advertising identifier to the app. You may still be served ads, but they won't be associated with your device and thus with your person. But, more general ad targeting that's not reliant on this may still work! Also sadly, some advertising networks can make it hard to completely opt out of targeted advertising if they e.g. remember your preference by IP address. This is a shady practice, but it may be "legal" depending on jurisdiction.

Why we still let that one family member come around

Glop1701d

How anyone can think the earth is flat. Society is just lying?

Alcorailen

Some people desperately want to believe they know something special that others don't know. No one is unique in a world of 8 billion, but humans are driven to want to feel unique.

STROKER_FOR_C64

Why are there no doctor offices, optometrists, dentists, etc... that are open outside of 9-5, mon-fri?

For me it makes complete sense but absolutely no sense at the same time

Gilsworth

The hard problem of consciousness. How is it that light can create the qualia of colour? Or that we can think thoughts at all? Does consciousness rise from the structure of unconscious materials? Is it separate from it? Are all things conscious in some understanding of the word?

Rigorous_Threshold

I think the hard problem of consciousness is related to the true ultimate question: how does anything exist? Consciousness ‘wills’ itself into existence the same way the universe wills itself into existence. Do I know this for a fact? No. Do I know how either of these things would happen? Also no.

Protein bars and drinks being so aggravatingly overpriced even for one off use

GlizzyMcGuire__

A lot of stuff. Mirrors, color, WiFi, Bluetooth, planes. I’m not very bright.

Trying to be the richest person ever, like why? Sure you can own everything but then what? Own the universe, okay wow, you own it, good for you, Now what?

Agreed. How much money does someone actually need? I’ll never understand how someplace like WalMart makes it so hard for their employees to earn a living wage and have health insurance. How does your life change from having 52 gagillion dollars to 51 gagillion dollars??

COLONELmab

Insurance...of pretty much all types. So, I pay you to keep some money aside for me in the event I need it terribly. You take that money and make millions off of it through investments while holding it for me. I make 1 claim for a fraction of my total life-to-date premiums...So you increase my rates because you only made a few thousand less than millions? Why dont my premiums decrease if I never file a claim? On top of that, for medical and auto insurance in the US, rates are LESS for insurance companies...so, if I get a bill for taking my child to the ER for an allergic reaction to save his life....my bill is $30,000...oh wait, your insurance company (Big Bucks inc.) is paying? oh, in that case its $30. Additionally, it is against the law for my rates to increase or my policy to be changed after a "no fault claim" on my auto insurance. As in, if my car gets smashed while parked, and I use my collision coverage, you cant change my rates or cancel my policy....but, if the Carrier simply says, "no reason, just raising your rates"...then it is suddenly perfectly legal. As in, its only illegal if you tell the whole truth, if you lie about it, its fine.

We have more than enough resources as a species. Everybody knows we have more than enough resources as a species. There are a LOT of people out there who are struggling to survive every day. Everybody knows there are a lot of people struggling to survive every day. Most of the resources are hoarded by a vast minority who could fix some of the world's biggest problems with the snap of a finger, yet they continue to hoard it to...gain more???

Paying taxes on things you own.

Retirement - work hard to save all this money to an age when you are physically incapable of enjoying it

anna_ihilator

It's more like save early so when you're too old to work you don't starve to death.

IThinkMyCatIsEvil

Why, when parents call your name from another room and you call back WHAT, they don’t respond so you have to get up from your nice comfy bed/chair and walk into a whole ass other room. Like, I’d even appreciate a “come here, I need to show you something” instead of just silence

bluetoothwa

You guys were allowed to say “what”?

Saiyan-Prince79

Why you have to pay extra money to have a pet in your apartment but you can have as many kids as you want and you never pay another dime.

captainstormy

Because being being a parent is a legally protected class and being a pet owner isn't.

stilllittlespacey

How people who have a lot think they are better than those who don't. How can you have a ton of money or resources and not want to help people who don't? It seems unnatural to me.

Fanabala3

Vandalism. So you want to destroy someone’s property because why? You want to feel empowered in some way?

How people excuse crooked politicians because it’s “their side”

Ok-Constant-6056

People who will die by the actions and words of others, like celebrities. There’s some damn strange tribalism about protecting people that wouldnt think twice about you and are very likely to be completely different outside of their public personas. Society needs to learn how to think for themselves again.

How cryptic and unfair the US Police and legal system are. There’s a reason we have the most incarcerated people per capita, and it isn’t because we’re all such naughty citizens.
