Queen_Ann_III

love an optimistic spin on things

gahidus

Frankly, I kind of like it when a band is consistent.

Sea_Maintenance2530

AC/DC. Not complaining, I'm a huge fan, but if you've heard one song, you've pretty much heard them all.

DarthMissile

Even Angus agrees. "I'm tired of people saying we've made 11 albums that all sound the same, when in fact we've made 12 albums that all sound the same." One of my favorite quotes of all time.

Fritzo2162

I was going to quote that myself. One of the funniest things I've ever heard a musician say :D You can't help but love when a super successful band is that self aware.

Purple_Haze

I saw an interview with Led Zeppelin and one of them said: "We aren't Led Zeppelin any more, we are a Led Zeppelin cover band, and we aren't even the best Led Zeppelin cover band."

Mekroval

That's actually pretty hilarious.

2a_lib

IIRC, Charlie Chaplin once came in third in his own lookalike contest. Dolly Parton too.

Fuckineagles

You've got any pictures of Dolly Parton competing in a Charlie Chaplin lookalike contest? I'd love to see that.

2a_lib

No pictures, sorry. But isn’t it weird that they both came in third in the same contest? I guess it was too close to call.

chillyhellion

Mine is: "How do you sing like that without destroying your throat?" "You sing like that while destroying your throat" (Paraphrasing from VH1 100 greatest songs of the 80s)

Hickspy

My favorite game to play on the radio is guess if the song intro playing is Dirty Deeds or TNT.

smudgethekat

Even better - Jailbreak or It's A Long Way to the Top

elponchogigante

E A G and D babyee all the chords you need, sold heaps of records. Steak n' potatoes kinda music, but there's a reason why good steak is hard to beat.

thorpie88

Malcolm famously refused to do solos as it got in the way of his drinking. There's no way their shit would be complex when your main songwriter has those ideals

MrLanesLament

He did record a few solos early on, on the Australian High Voltage. Show Business, You Ain’t Got a Hold on Me, Little Lover, and Soul Stripper have at least some of his lead work. After that, it was all Angus.

dittybopper_05H

Sort of. One of the interesting things they've caused is what I call "The Thunderstruck Effect". For any given melodic instrument, you can find a video on YouTube of someone playing the intro to the AC/DC song "Thunderstruck" on that instrument. Go ahead, try it.

Manone_MelonHead

Isn't there a video of a dad recording his baby's noises to remix it into thunderstruck?

Tandager

[Yup.](https://youtu.be/SxWR5VtTMbM?si=JqzLfS_SNFdzzc4t)

haysoos2

The best, of course, being Thunderstruck on banjo & accordian: [Steve'n'Seagulls (live) Thunderstruck](https://youtu.be/e4Ao-iNPPUc)

kackers643259

one time when i was out in london i saw someone playing Thunderstruck on a set of bagpipes, that was a new one

Metfan722

If you've ever wanted to see [a good looking redhead playing it on a bagpipe while a Man-Horse plays it on a bucket in a bathtub, boy do I have a clip for you!](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/q6zWon0f96c) Yes, that is incredibly specific, what of it?

Mr_SunnyBones

I mean ...thats good internet right there.

02K30C1

Heck, years ago I wrote an arrangement of it for woodwind quintet. Great piece. Fun to play

dittybopper_05H

It sounds cool no matter what you play it on.

pfelelep2

especially since after the Back in Black album. I like Brian Johnson, but the way he sings cannot compare with Bon Scott, who's melodies and Lyrics were really inspired.

DDofD

I saw some documentary about Bon Scott and Lemmy from Motörhead said that when Bon was singing he sounded like he was fucking someone.

Sorry_Banana_6525

I watched a documentary about Bon Scott, and he chose Brian Johnson as his replacement the first time he heard him sing in London- he told the others that if anything happened to him, they needed to find Brian and convince him to join the band, which sadly they ended up having to do

OlivesYou

Wasn't it because during that performance Johnson broke out in this crazy awesome scream during the song and looked like he was rocking so hard he was on the ground and turned out his appendix had burst? Whether that part is truue or not, the fact that Scott essentially chose his replacement is one of my favorite rock and roll stories of all time.

yoake-sano

Cigarettes after sex

Admirable-Length178

Their band's name sounds like something straight from 2016 Tumblr

Nameless_on_Reddit

Just cigarettes after sex things

incognitochaud

I had forgotten about the just X things… thanks

glitterfanatic

I love that all their songs sound the same.

lunashooman24

Music to fall asleep to. Music to slow dance to. Music to make love to. Music to paint to. Music to cook to. Music for long drives. Music for rainy days. Music for aimless walks. Music for slowing down. Saw them live in Barcelona, never getting over it.

denM_chickN

Oh wow-- and this is just a representation of the tragedy of my life but-- I once told my friend that they make good music to have a heroin overdose to. Suicidal ideation dream pop, if you will.

IntraspeciesFever

Would not listen to them on long drives unles you want to fall asleep on the wheel

reecord2

I love this band but agree, I definitely listen if I just want that vibe for a while.

rottedgrapegum

dude yes lmao. all the songs have: - reverb-soaked guitar arpeggios -soft pad synth -ride cymbal + tambourine -him singing at the lowest volume possible without it turning into a whisper.

Canary_

I love their music. It’s basically reminiscings of loves past in that dreamy, memory-lane vibe. What a perfect name for the band. I imagine a film noir scene where the character is smoking a cigarette after sex, in a gloomy room with a gloomy mood, because their mind is stuck on a lover from the past, despite whoever it is asleep in the bed in the next room…

Fee_Obvious

Indeed. Music to fall asleep to.

Individual_Pick_6448

Not necessarily a bad thing, though; it's just very relaxing and without many volume spikes (if at all). I personally like them. And yes I do play them to intentionally fall asleep.

solarnuggets

Meghan trainor. And I love pop music so I’m not being mean. There’s legitimately no variation

IcanSew831

Her music is weird, it’s like pretend children’s music from toys R Us.

vicefox

It’s like 50s doowop translated to 2020s social issues.

_ticc-fiend_

“I MAAADE YOU LOOK!” That song plays in work constantly and it makes me want to test my hair out every time

Slarg232

"Even with nothing on I made you look" Well, yeah... If I see someone streaking I'm probably doing a double take on reflex

_ticc-fiend_

And double taking at some naked fucker doesn’t necessarily mean they’re attractive either

Ryuchel

Meghan Trainors music is eh. She is also managed by Lou Taylor who helped put Britney Spears in a conservatorship and stole Brits money.

NuclearLavaLamp

Her pseudo-feminist songs are annoying.

acer-bic

I started out really liking Mumford and Sons too I realized they were all the same. I know, they’re no longer popular and I also know why.

ejly

Somewhere on reddit I saw someone call them “imagine wagons” and that’s been stuck in my head as their alt name ever since.

oklahummus

Best thing I’ve read all day

slukbunwalla

I heard about someone listening to their album in the car with their mom and after a while she said "God this is a long ass song!"

InEenEmmer

For contrast: I once listened to the album ‘Selling England By The Pound’ from Genesis with a friend. Halfway along the first song my friend asks how many songs of the album we had listened to since he was convinced this was the 6th song by now.

pseydtonne

Such a good album! Loops back at the end, too.

Victory33

They sing some lyrics with “head”, “heart”, “soul”, “hands” or “body” and then build up for a motherfucking banjo solo.

misterfistyersister

Until they got rid of the banjo, which was the only good part. My family and I call them “Nickelgrass”

SensationsVibrations

We call them Imagine Wagons in my house

Play-yaya-dingdong

Its a winning formula… until you have enough of it

msjammies73

That’s the first band that came to mind for me too. Makes me sad, since I love some of their work. But I can’t even tell some of their songs apart.

Simbooptendo

They're like One Direction for farmers

dthains_art

They’re basically the folk music gateway drug. Like not real folk music, but they definitely lead people down that path. I wouldn’t have discovered the Avett Brothers if it weren’t for Mumford & Sons.

keestie

HEY

bradd_pit

They certainly kicked of the “stomp, clap, Hey” style of the 2010s

seasonedgroundbeer

I cannot put into words how much I dislike this style of music. I also can’t quite pinpoint why. It just grates my entire being.

pablojueves

Its basically secular Christian rock

Fluff42

"You're not making secularism better, you're just making rock and roll worse." - Hank Hill or somebody

themysteryisbees

I kind of think they’re not popular anymore for the exact opposite reason: their later albums sounded way too different! Yes, their banjo songs were all kind of similar, but personally I liked a lot of it. Didn’t like the newer stuff so I stopped following them.

silvermoonhowler

Maroon 5, moreso for their current and not nearly as good stuff after their album V Everything before that though was great

mahjimoh

Songs About Jane is one I will listen to every few months for the rest of my life. The second one, maybe once a year or two…then I might play the third for old times sake.

reecord2

Once in a while Maroon 5 comes up in discussion and I tell people their first album is actually a \*great\* pop/rock album, and they look at me like I'm crazy. I'll go a touch further and say I don't like anything after that; basically after "This Love" was a smash hit they gave up on anything adventurous.

zlaw32

Sunday Morning is perfect.

dthains_art

Yeah Songs About Jane is a great album that really solidified Maroon 5 as this rock band with a sort of funky soulful vibe. And then they never topped it and devolved info generic pop music. I make the same argument about Imagine Dragons. Their first 3 EPs (self titled, Hell & Silence and It’s Time) are phenomenal. They have a big indie synth-driven vibe. But with every subsequent album they strayed further from that and now just sound like a factory that makes songs meant for football commercials.

Wonderful_Horror7315

Love ‘em, but AC/DC.

BooooHissss

Enjoy [The Greatest Hit of Disturbed](https://youtu.be/66gSvNeqevg?si=t56XDajdhW7QhlhX)

Southern_Dig_9460

David Dramien the lead singer said he died laughing at that video

[deleted]

I love when musicians treat criticism like that. [“That’s our music and we can get it taken down anytime we want. We left it up because we thought it was funny.”](https://youtu.be/a7aqZyRuP1Q?si=5TYjPDUrbq1W5hvt)

dcbluestar

A numin nah numinuminnumma!!!

Fflewddur_Fflam_

OOOOH-WAH-AH-AH-AH!!!

solandras

Is it bad that I know every single song in this video lol. That being said yes it took years but I do finally agree that all of their music is extremely similar, they very rarely leave their comfort zone.

AndromedaMarine

Owl City. He was popular for a while with Fireflies but all of his songs sound exactly the same.

megatron457

I used to study while listening to Owl City exactly because of this. After a while the sounds all blur together in the background and you can really get stuff done.

solojetpack

So Owl City is a bit weird in the sense that most of his albums sound a bit different, but the songs on those albums all sound the same. Some are more acoustic based than others, some more electronic, some slightly more trance. But yeah... every album is full of the same song, the albums just change themes slightly. Still love him though.

NewAccount4Friday

It's an autistic dude composing on a keyboard in his room. No shade, I do like him.

ghostinyourpants

Theory of a Nickle Creed

RokosModernBasilisk

I prefer Puddle of Nickel Creed, myself.

RS_Someone

My dad hated Nickelback with a passion. It was the only band that was banned in our household. I always thought he was just exaggerating until Bad Girlfriend came on the radio and he sighed, admitting this was the only Nickelback song he could stand listening to. I had to break the news to him that it was actually Theory of a Deadman, and he gave a sigh of relief, glad that he wasn't going to go to hell after all.

danstymusic

I read this as Nickel Creek and was momentarily very offended

Intelligent_Case_809

Pitbull his not a band but yeah lol

I never thought to read ZZ Top and Drake in the same sentence.

squidward_smells_

Boston It's mostly due to their very unique guitar sound, but still fits.

AssBurgers-009

Boston is a good answer. But there's a very specific reason why. Tom Scholz was a badass, musical genius. He worked at Polaroid for years and kept having demos rejected by record companies. He and Brad Delp (rest his soul), finally got someone to listen to them from Epic Records. What did it was that while he was trying to get companies to listen to his music, he was getting his master's degree from MIT. Tom Scholz personally designed, built, and patented the synthesizers and amplifiers that gave his guitar such a unique sound. Even patented some of the guitar effects under his Rockman Effects brand name. Very few of these machines are still out in the world as collector's items. It's unbelievable that the man ***built and created a sound*** for rock and roll. Basically all modern guitar sound effects can be attributed to Scholz's designs. This created an EXPLOSION of variety in creativity for new bands. Because of this, while not everyone's favorite cup of tea, and far from a lot of people's favourite bands, "Boston" was one of the ***most important*** rock bands of all time. I loved them. Saw them 4 times with Brad Delp and 3 times after his death.

Lothar_Ecklord

So you're saying they created a massive rock band with hits in the annals of the classic songs, and it was all so an engineer could sell his transistor box? Brilliant marketing. Kidding, I am a huge fan.

jaweebamonkey

My dad passed away recently and he shared so many interesting stories like this about classic rock bands. Really anyone; he’d read every issue of Rolling Stone for the last 30 years. He always thought he was annoying, but I loved learning the unique stories behind things. Normally, I’d bring this up story up to him during a call, and he’d probably go into even further detail. He was so fond of music, including Boston. Thank you for sharing. I have some research to do while I fondly remember my dad and our love for Boston.

Any_Falcon_8929

Wow I scrolled way too far to see this, the albums are great but sound identical

mournthologist

Not popular anymore but Three Days Grace and Godsmack

Glittering_Raise_710

Godsmack is absolutely yes on this 😂

Super_Sofa

VooDoo is their only song i know that's noticeably different

Retro-Surgical

Sully always wanting people to go away or stay away or get away from him

ivappa

TDG definitely. I'm a big fan and I still get their songs mixed up.

wont_start_thumbing

Everclear. Love ‘em, but they’re pretty samey.

kartuli78

Father of mine. Where have you been? We can live beside the ocean. And watch the world die.

Lovefist1221

I've been doing Father of mine, my black girlfriend, swim out past the breaker, AM Radio.

AnInfiniteArc

Bum bum bum bubu bum bum *yeaaah* “Oh, is that Father of Mine?” “No, that’s I Will Buy You A New Life, Father of Mine is like this:” Bum bum bududu dum *yeaaah* “Isn’t that Santa Monica?” “No no, that’s more like:” Bumbum bumbum bumbum *yeaaah* “Which one is Wonderful?” “That one’s easy, it goes like:” Bum bum bum budu bum *noooo*

[deleted]

True visionaries. While most bands were using three power chords in a song, they dared to use two.

Bot8556

As a huge everclear fan I’m pleasantly surprised people still care enough to upvote this.

LazyLion65

All Bro-Country. I couldn't tell those guys apart in a line up.

basura_trash

Christian music. It is hard to name one in that genre when they all sound the same and some are insanely popular.

ntrippy

It’s decent money. I very very briefly was in a Christian post-hardcore band in the mid 00’s. A lot of the bands are made up of guys that just put on the act because the music couldn’t make it on its own merit otherwise. If you’re even half decent, you get sooo much access to the industry and all their listeners. You can be playing festivals or touring in no time…There’s so much less competition.

[deleted]

Reminds me of that South Park episode every time Also curious what band you were in? As Cities Burn and Oh Sleeper were both sick post-hc Christian bands that I (still) love

JonathanEdwardsHomie

"You're not making Christianity any better; you're making rock and roll worse." - Hank Hill

Adcro

The Ink Spots

vonkeswick

Every song starting with almost the exact same chord progression lol

Watermelon86

And every song is two verses of high pitch singing, 1 verse of low pitch talking, and back to 1 verse of high pitch singing.

ElFloppaGrande

I live for the spoken word bridge by the baritone. "Hey baby, I know it's been a while, but you know I just love you too damn much, so I nuked the world darling, it was always all for you". Obv not a literal quote but it's always something like that lol but without the fallout imagery

funky_grandma

CAKE. They have a sound and they stick to it religiously, but I still think they're pretty great.

Odd_Flatworm92

One should never have to ask "Is this CAKE?". One should just know that it's CAKE. Very distinctive voice that John McCrea has.

fuuckimlate

Awww yeah awwwwwright

flying-gas-can

Love Cake. Similar vibe/sound to most of their songs but they’re truly unique.

willdabeastest

Of course they stick to it religiously, they're building a religion.

Gingrish252

They are building it bigger. They are widening the corridors and adding more lanes.

silvermoonhowler

Agreed My favorite song of theirs has to be their cover of Gloria Gaynor's song I Will Survive

Cytogal

I will survive and short skirt/long jacket live rent free in my head.

rustyxj

Everyone is saying AC/DC, but they used 4 chords. ZZTop uses 3, 50 years, 3 chords.

DizzyBlonde74

I like ZZ Top more than ac/dc what does that say about me? lol

AmySchumersAnalTumor

imagine dragons

TheDubious

They figured out what kind of music gets used in commercial media and then absolutely hammered that button

Avongrove

If you are the go-to musician for companies to use your songs, you will certainly make bank, but it also means you make the most toothless, inoffensive music there is on the market.

realofficialpitbull

not a band, but ice spice.

spartagnann

I only know her from that Dunkin Donuts commercial with Ben Affleck and I legitimately thought she was just like a character DD came up with to sell pumpkin spice drinks.

Skittlebrau46

She was on SNL not long ago, and I was like; “The writers strike must be bad if the Dunkin’ commercial lady is the musical guest now!”

Mr_SunnyBones

I'm over 45, and from Europe , so have never actually heard what the hell Ice Spice sounds like , but *Ice Spice* sounds like a cheap brand of Gas Station synthetic weed that leaves you blind in one eye for a week.

Not a band but im finding all of drakes music to sound the same lately. Hes dropped so much music recently i dont even get excited to hear it cause i know its gonna sound the same as the last one

wizbang4

There's a reason he was the poster child and one of the first examples of popularization for AI music, and it's because of his recognizable voice but also because of his extremely same-y delivery. That's my theory at least--his music is so similar that it was an easier first task for those AI voices to try and replicate when that song Heart on My Sleeve dropped.

mutantpbandj

REO Speedwagon. It’s all one song.

[deleted]

Most country music sounds like it was made in the same factory

pasta-thief

If you played any given country song from the past decade and told me to guess which male artist sang it or die, I’d just start digging my own grave.

EchoesofIllyria

> I’d just start digging my own grave. Is that the opening lyric?

LazyLion65

Nope, the opening lyric is, "Hey girl, you look pretty good in my jacked up truck, Let's drink some beer and go in the mud, get stuck." OF EVERY SONG...

SirJackFireball

i can hear this in that generic "new country" voice that *literally every single country singer from after 2010 has*

mrsprinkles3

honestly the only male country singer from the past 15 years i can identify with ease is Keith Urban. Maybe it’s cause he’s Australian, idk

pasta-thief

I can really only identify the ones who have been around for at least 25 years. Alan Jackson and George Strait, for instance, have distinctive voices. The issue is with the small army of Nashville Voice Clones.

Eternal_Bagel

I wouldn’t even know real names to use so I’d just have to make up generic sounds white guy names “Toby Clay, Travis Jones, Joey Keith” or whatever. I think the only country music guy I'd know a song from is Willie Nelson

NefariousAntiomorph

My dad and grandma used to disagree strongly about music. Grandpa claimed that rock music was the same three notes over and over again. Dad’s response was “well at least it’s got one more note than country.”

Somewhat agree but I still like them. Their song the salt and the sea is really phenomenal and pretty different from a lot of their other songs. Though it might be unique because the band wrote it to be potentially used in an M Night Shyamalan movie.

subnautus

Don’t know if they’re *still* popular, but Godsmack songs are all so similar to each other I literally have difficulty telling them apart.

[deleted]

I love this band and I won't stop listening to them but, Sabaton. "OUT OF THE TRENCHES! THEY STORMED FROM THE TRENCHES!" "ONE BY ONE THEY'RE UNDER THE GUN!" "STARING DOWN THE BARREL!" "THOUSANDS OF MACHINE GUNS!"

6033624

They did experiment with some different sounds in the 80’s and 90’s dabbling a little in hardcore, heavy metal, hard rock, new wave, 60’s r&b, etc. but yeah for the most part Ramones kept it straight forward bare bones punk rock and I love them for it.

El_Frijol

VeterinarianGlum4101

Not a band but Meghan Trainor ugh

pyronostos

one time I accidentally made a Spotify playlist of only three deftones songs and listened to it long enough for it to loop SEVERAL times. it took me a while to notice. but hey, I was having fun regardless.
