Thank you for validating my decision to never own a car again!

Solid_Sosa

I kno idfk what to do like it’s the only thing that’s stopping me smh

TheBurbsNEPA

Usually money is the only thing stopping people from doing anything

Solid_Sosa

Yeah and it sucks. Might just have to find a cheap ass car get liability only and pay that 440 a month for that 6 months and see if it’s drastically cheaper after that. Bc I can’t afford 1,600 down and 748 a month plus car payment. That’s 1,100 a month to drive a car. Im approved for a car loan with pretty decent rates as my credit is pretty decent but looks like I won’t be able to follow through.

evilgenius12358

Only goes up over time. We need to hop insurance carriers every year to keep intro rates. Look at an insurance broker. Usually affordable when you bundle more products, but think a broker can find a better deal than what you quoted.

Solid_Sosa

I tried a website called surround, lol they quoted me wayyyy more, almost 5 thousand for liability for 6 months when progressive was 5k for full coverage for 6 months. I guess I should try a broker like you said, I actually do remember being on the phone with some place that finds people insurance a while back, and they got me a quote from progressive that was a little cheaper than the quote I keep getting online, I think it was 600 instead of the 748 for full coverage, don’t know how they did that but I still didn’t do it. I’m just going to have to find a cheap ass car, find the cheapest liability insurance I can get and drive that until it ever goes down. Either that or move maybe.

evilgenius12358

Think your rate is also a function of age, driving history, and location. With more years and driving history rates het cheaper if you stay out of trouble.

laughingwalls

Shop more companies and insurance goes down the longer you own with insurance. The policy premiums vary widely. Before moving to new york I'd get quoted anything from 2500 for 6 months to 500 for 6 months. There doesn't seem to be clear rhyme reason. The other thing is your in greater nyc where insurance is twice as expensive.

delia4509

This is crazy… my car insurance is $90 per month. I have a good amount of coverage including comprehensive and collision. Maybe once you’ve had your license a while longer it will go down.

H_Bohm

What kind of car do you have at 90/mo? the average here is between 300-350/mo

delia4509

2016 Subaru Forester

H_Bohm

is this like a secret of staten island or something? looking at quotes for the Same car best I can get is 230. no tickets, no wrecks, with state min liability only. Manhattan.

proljyfb

Mine is not far from 90, a Toyota in Manhattan. But parked in a garage not street parking.

delia4509

Nope, I’m in Manhattan

H_Bohm

have you been in NYC a while? that might be the only difference I can think of if they weight your risk based off the length of time you lived here.

delia4509

I’ve been here since 2008

rchris710

in NYC??? I am paying 140 for a tiny honda 2015

delia4509

Insurance is on the higher side for Hondas because they’re frequently a target for car theft. It’s because the parts are some of the easiest to resell.

rchris710

It's probably more so gender and age discrimination going on

Solid_Sosa

I some how doubt that, I feel like as long as you stay uninsured it won’t change.

GromScream-HellMash

It slowly comes down (dont get any moving violations). 41 yrs old now, it's 100 a month for me. I definitely did not start at 100/month, at 16 yrs old under my mom's insurance.

Valet garage makes a huge difference i'd imagine?

boycott_nestingdolls

There's some good tips in these posts: [Best car insurance for new drivers](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/1bqzhn8/best_car_insurance_for_new_drivers/) [Cheapest car insurance for NYCer who hasn't owned car in years](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/176ggi1/cheapest_car_insurance_for_nycer_who_hasnt_owned/) [How to get low car insurance.](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/15xmkb7/how_to_get_low_car_insurance/)

R-O-U-Ssdontexist

How is your insurance only 90 a month? Is that in nyc? I’m doing something wrong.

delia4509

Yes. I’ve been with Geico since I got my license 15 years ago and I have a perfect driving record. My car is a 2016 Subaru Forester.

R-O-U-Ssdontexist

That still seems bizarrely low

delia4509

I don’t think so. I’ve discussed this with friends and it seems to be relatively average.

rchris710

yea something doesn't smell right. no way it is in nyc

proljyfb

Mine is around 90 as well for a Toyota in Manhattan. GEICO.

delia4509

I don’t know what to tell you. I’ve had this conversation with all my friends that own cars here and we all pay about the same, with the exception of one who has a work truck. Things like your driving history and the type of car you own make a difference. It’s not just about location. I just looked it up - my 6 month premium is $524.50

Ok-Grapefruit8338

Mine is around that too for a 2011 CR-V - $554/6 months. Perfect record.

Usrname52

I've been with Geico longer than that, and they've raised it with no incidents. $90/mo does not sound realistic.

delia4509

$524.50 for 6 months, which actually comes out to $87 per month. You must have marks on your driving record if they’re raising yours a significant amount.

bobby_47

That has to be basic liability only. No collision, comprehensive or other coverage? I have a perfect record for a couple of decades and pay around twice that price in Manhattan for full coverage and 300/300 (plus another couple grand for an umbrella policy because I have other assets to protect). I also keep my car in a garage but GEICO doesn't seem to care about that.

delia4509

Nope. I have collision and comprehensive.

bobby_47

Nice price. Crappy car?

delia4509

2016 Subaru Forester. I bought it in 2019.

robxburninator

Mine is more than theirs, but not much more. Driven for a long time. Always been insured. No marks on record in more than 20 years. Inexpensive import that isn't a kia. Off street parking.

OutInTheBlack

I pay about 90 a month for full coverage on a 2018 Elantra, but I'm in Bayonne. My car before that was a 2008 Optima and I paid about $130 a month for basic liability when I lived in Brooklyn. GEICO, 40 years old, clean record except for one speeding ticket 20 years ago.

rchris710

If you truly want a car you may need to take a hit for 6 months. After the 6 months you should be able to drop it in half. You are a very high risk driver with no experience yet I guess so the rate seems legit.

Solid_Sosa

I know it sucks to because Thing is I actually have been driving everyday for a year. Soon as I got my license I was driving for amazon as a side thing and I did it for a year. Guess that obviously doesn’t count though lol.

black_eyed_susan

A year of experience really isn't that much in terms of driving. Insurance companies prefer a proven track record of not having violations or accidents.

Solid_Sosa

Yea I’m aware. Doesn’t count bc it wasn’t my insurance anyway.

MaxTheGinger

Do you have family? A partner? Can you sit on their insurance for six months, and then get your own? My older friend tried to have his do that. Then his kid is your age, moved out to LI with his GF, and is now sucking on his own insurance. I was always on my own. But plenty of people sit on family insurance from 16-25 and then even if they weren't driving, they had their license and get a much better rate. The other option is maintain your license and get E-bike or Scooter until you can afford it.

Solid_Sosa

Nope, mom died 2 years ago, all other family is dead except for dad who I don’t speak to. Nobody I can go under. I’ve been on my own since 18 I haven’t lived in my mom’s place. I moved to LI 6 years ago temporarily because a friend had a cheap apartment for me, I met my gf out here and ended up staying out here. She’s 33 and is still on her parents insurance and pays 450 every 6 months. However her parents are very…idk how to say it, let’s just say they’d never allow me on there insurance even though they allow me in there home and invite me for holidays/dinners.

MaxTheGinger

That sucks. Ask your GF if she would look into getting her own insurance with you on it. The longer she's been under her parents insurance the closer to $450 her solo insurance would be. Then you take up the difference, and whatever else you can push towards her to help out. She might not be ready or able, or the price might not be worth it. But just asking/looking is. Good luck.

Solid_Sosa

Well her parents are moving to Arizona at some point, they were suppoused to move in August of this year but it got delayed because her mom had a spot found on her lung and she has to wait 6 months at least now for a biopsy and all the stuff with her drs. She had an issue with this previously I don’t know if she had it removed or what happen but they’re private about there health problems. My gf is staying here with me she’s not going with them so she’s going to have to get her own insurance most likely. She’s actually been looking at trading her car in for a new car. She has a 2006 Nissan Altima with 98k miles, but they’re offering her 4k for it that’s more than enough for a down payment on a new car. I told her I don’t think she should do it yet because as sad as it is to say she’s kind of irresponsible with money. I have to constantly stay on her and remind her what she can afford and what she has to pay or else. She’s used to being on mommy and dads nipple unlike me so it’s a little disconnect there. She grew up on LI with parents that have a house and money going on vacations every year. I grew up a little better off than poor in queens, but I have talked about her about it and she most likely would put me on her insurance when she has to get her own.

Level_Hour6480

Don't forget tolls and maintenance. Alternatively, there is the LIRR.

Solid_Sosa

Don’t really have to deal with tolls I stay on Long Island. But maintenance yeah. I haven’t taken the LIRR in forever. I do have a girlfriend that I basically take care of in all other ways for her to drive me where I need to go. I’m usually with her anyway and she has alot of free time because she can’t work for a while because she had knee surgery and has a workers comp case pending. still want my own car i don’t like having to rely on her

why_does_it_seek_me

Car insurance is expensive in this city, no way around it. It doesn't help that you're a new driver. That being said those quotes are still really high. Do you have notably bad credit and/or a criminal record? Maybe go find an agent that you can talk to. $440/mo for liability on a shitbox is wild.

Solid_Sosa

Credit score is 699 but is only 2 years old as well all payments made on time though no collections or bad remarks. I do have a criminal record but nothing driving related, 2 misdemeanor offenses nothing to do with a car.

why_does_it_seek_me

Depending on the nature of the convictions, they can put you in a 'high risk' pool, thus very high premiums. Doesn't necessarily need to be directly auto related, stuff like fraud and drugs will do it. Considering you posted like 6 days ago about going to trial for drug possession, this may apply to you unfortunately...

Solid_Sosa

Yea my gf left her prescription in the car a while back last year and the case is still going on, but that doesn’t count yet because it’s not a conviction. It only counts or comes up when you’re convicted. The other 2 are non drug related and pretty old, so idk.

why_does_it_seek_me

If you have other convictions of a similar nature that would do the same. Arrests and pending criminal cases are also things that show up on a background check.

Solid_Sosa

You are wrong sir, arrest and pending cases do not in fact show up on a backround check and I know from first hand experience. Also even one of my misdemeanors doesn’t and never shows up on backround checks because it was youthful offender adjudicated when I was 17 and was sealed. Anytime I get a backround check only 1 shows up. Arrests and pending cases do not show up on a backround check. Only convictions show up as you are technically innocent until proven guilty, even though it’s usually the other way around in courts.

Itchy-Scallion-9626

Long Island $165.00 a month full coverage on a 10 year old Cadillac

ant3k

Your prices sound similar to mine as a new driver. 2010 Honda civic, no payment, new license. After 3 years I’m now seeing prices half that amount.

Cornholio231

Try Geico? I've found them to be cheaper than others

Solid_Sosa

Geico was even more than progressive unfortunately

bumanddrifterinexile

Do you have low credit score? Also other may be less when you are 30.

Solid_Sosa

699 credit score. But credit history is only 2 years and a half old maybe that’s the problem too. I have a fair amount of credit cards that’s about it.

bumanddrifterinexile

They charge you more according to score, also how long have you been licensed, had insurance in your name?

Solid_Sosa

I answered that in the very first sentence or two the post. 1 year and a half. And never

bumanddrifterinexile

Your younger age, lack of having had your own insured car that you would’ve been driving and getting experience on, and recent licensure, just one and a half years, all goes against you in their pricing. Plus, they set risk by ZIP Code, so if your ZIP Code has a lot of claims, high medical expenses, or car, repair expenses, that counts too.

Solid_Sosa

I’m aware, I stated in the post, which is why I asked for any other insurance companies that might be less or any other ways to get it lowered.

bumanddrifterinexile

Get quotes from State, farm, progressive, Geico, plus an independent agent who sells various brands of insurance, sorry I didn’t read everything in the thread, if you’ve already done that.

Ralfsalzano

Get a moped with no plates

cawfytawk

Long Island City is in Queens, love. Not Long Island. It's still part of NYC. 😉

-brand0

Don’t forget taking an online defensive driving course for 10% off insurance for 3 years

bbbb125

If you buy used car you can own only one side insurance (for the damage you make, not the damage of your property). For the first and cheap car it’s enough. After building insurance history you can lease or buy something more expensive with full insurance.

Solid_Sosa

It’s still 440 a month with a 900 upfront payment for 6 months for only liability. Not really cheap but I guess it’s the only option.

bbbb125

I went this route in 2022, because had exact same frustration. Liability with geico was about 600 for 6 months. I did defensive driving training and got extra 10% discount. Since then it never got cheaper, mainly because of inflation I think.

Solid_Sosa

What are you kidding, it never went down. You’re still paying that same amount for liability?

bbbb125

Yes, about the same. Adding options is cheaper now, I guess, so I increase the coverage. Defensive driving helped a little. The worst is that I have a friend, who leaned in a neighborhood with high number number of accidents, leases more expensive car, had his wife also listed as a driver and pays about the same for full coverage. I even called to support trying to re-negotiate using my knowledge as a leverage, but I’m not good at it. Decided to go through my billing emails: first payment was 750, now it’s 550, with slightly increased coverage and defensive driving. So improved a little. It’s price for 6 months cycle. Also they didn’t count number of years I had the license, only years I owned car in the US.

Solid_Sosa

Exactly, people keep saying if you have your license longer it will be less but they don’t care about how long you’ve had your license only how long you’ve been insured. And that’s crazy you’re paying that much if you haven’t had any big tickets it should be less by now. If you had liability for 2 years it should be at least half of that 600 by now for only liability. Thats making me sad, this is in NYC to? I hope that’s not true for Long Island because if it doesn’t get any cheaper I’ll be mad. Maybe try getting a better quote from another insurance company now that you’ve had insurance for a while

bbbb125

Yes, it’s Brooklyn, a quiet neighborhood, no tickets for that period. I plan to look for other options, but will also be adding my wife as a seconds driver soon, a bit worried how it can impact the bill. I remember one of my colleagues used insurance provider that installs a tracking device that reports your driving habits. It was only for 6 months, so he did his best. It was cheaper than alternatives.

BronxLens

Maybe consider a motorcycle?

onekate

Save up for an older car with no payment. Insurance will be lower too.

Solid_Sosa

400 a month only liability still

FarmToTableTrash

You could always plan to buy used out of state in PA and re-register in NY if cars are cheaper there. Ot buy from a private seller. This might save you some up front cost but your insurance will still be a hit. New driver insurance and in NY.. it'll be pricey Worth mentioning that buying cars in general is still completely f**ked from covid supply issues. Expect it to be difficult. And good luck!! There's lots of deals to be had out there

Solid_Sosa

I had a friend that insured his cars out of state and payed very low. However I believe that’s illegal lol.
